Borderlands director Eli Roth on why Covid cursed the movie before it even began
Image
Borderlands was one of the biggest box-office bombs of 2024. The adaptation of the acclaimed video game franchise grossed just $33 million in theaters and was absolutely trashed by critics. While speaking on The Town podcast, Borderlands director Eli Roth reflected on the failure of the movie, saying Covid played a big part.

“None of us anticipated how complicated things were gonna be with Covid,” Roth said. “Not just in terms of what we’re shooting, but then you have to do pick-up shots or reshoots, and you have six people that are all on different sets, and every one of those sets is getting shut down because the cities have opened up, and now there’s a Covid outbreak and it was just like… we couldn’t prep in a room together, I couldn’t be with my stunt people, I couldn’t do pre-vis, everyone’s spread all over the place.

‘Borderlands’ Director Eli Roth Blames Covid for the Movie’s Quality: “You can’t prep a movie on that scale over Zoom”
Image
The 2024 Borderlands movie, directed by Eli Roth, hit theaters with high hopes but left audiences and critics largely disappointed. Based on the popular video game series by Gearbox Software, the film aimed to bring the chaotic, colorful world of Pandora to life.

Instead, it stumbled through production challenges and failed to connect with fans, earning a mere 10% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing just $33 million against a $110–120 million budget.

Filming began in Budapest, Hungary, in April 2021, during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The global health crisis disrupted the process significantly. Outbreaks forced sets to shut down, and restrictions prevented the crew from gathering in person. Essential tasks like stunt coordination and pre-visualization became nearly impossible.

Roth later shared that coordinating reshoots was a nightmare, with team members scattered across different locations and unable to meet face-to-face. Attempts to prepare the movie via Zoom fell flat, as the scale of...

Borderlands Cast & Character Guide
Image
When the Borderlands movie was announced, many fans were surprised that horror director Eli Roth would be helming it. However, it's worth noting that as much as the video game is filled with sci-fi and action, it does have monsters and terrifying elements to it, which is right up Roth's alley. Borderlands attempts to kick off a hopeful franchise by reinterpreting the first two games, where Vault Hunters seek cosmic weapons on planets like Pandora.

These Vaults were left behind by an ancient alien race known as the Eridians. Notably, there are many twists and turns that nod to the likes of Uncharted, Star Trek, and Star Wars, all while focusing on a ragtag band of misfits meant to save the cosmos. With that in mind, here is an extensive look into the cast Roth has assembled for his space opera. The movie was met with negative reactions by critics and the public audience.

Borderlands (2024) Movie Ending Explained: What is the final key to the vault?
Jamie Lee Curtis, Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt, and Florian Munteanu in Borderlands (2024)
The long-awaited Borderlands movie finally hit theatres on 8th August 2024 and has finally transitioned into digital media less than three weeks after its release. Directed by Eli Roth, the film has faced a turbulent journey from production to release, with reshoots, delays, and a significant creative overhaul. Despite its star-studded cast, including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Black, the movie has been met with overwhelmingly negative reviews, holding piss poor 9% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. Our very own critic at High on Films called it the ‘worst movie of the year.’ Now, as more viewers are likely to pay attention to the video game adaptation after its lukewarm performance during the theatrical run, the chaotic and action-packed events that unfold on the desolate planet of Pandora, many may find themselves being puzzled by Borderlands (2024)’s various turns and ending.

The story, which centers on a group...

‘Lego Horizon Adventures’ Is a Clever Self-Parody of Sony’s Sci-Fi Game Series
Image
There are two types of people who play with Legos: those are boundlessly creative, building by imagination unrestrained by how a machination is supposed to look, and others who strive for perfection, painstakingly ensuring that their design matches the instructions or their own personal design.

Lego Horizon Adventures (out Nov. 14) feels like a game made by the latter. A “Lego-fied” adaptation of the hit PlayStation game Horizon Zero Dawn (2017), its story is a kid-friendly send-up of the original game’s bleak sci-fi setting, but visually and mechanically, it...

"Everything That Could Go Wrong Did Go Wrong": Lionsgate Addresses Borderlands' Disastrous Box Office Performance
Image
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer has addressed the Borderlands movie and its disastrous box office performance, stating what factors likely caused the film to bomb. Based on the video game franchise by Gearbox Software, the movie follows outlaw Lillith (Cate Blanchett), who puts together a team to save Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), daughter of the powerful Deukalian Atlas (Edgar Ramrez). The movie received negative reviews from critics for being generic and not engaging enough in its story and presentation. This was compounded by Borderlands' box office failure, the movie grossing $33 million worldwide against a $110-120 million budget.

Now, The Hollywood Reporter states that, during a report on the company's second quarter finances, Lionsgate's Feltheimer acknowledged Borderlands' box office bomb. The CEO blamed the lengthy wait to release the movie due to the Covid-19 pandemic and costly reshoots as reasons it underperformed, also highlighting how other projects released by them in the...

Lionsgate CEO on Borderlands bombing at the box-office: “Everything that could go wrong did go wrong”
Image
Borderlands was a genuine bomb. No doubt about it. The adaptation of the acclaimed video game franchise grossed just $33 million in theaters and was absolutely trashed by critics. During a recent earnings call, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer spoke about the epic failure of Borderlands.

“On Borderlands, nearly everything that could go wrong did go wrong: it sat on the shelf for too long during the pandemic, and reshoots and rising interest rates took it outside the safety zone of our usual strict financial models,” Feltheimer said. With a budget of around $120 million, Borderlands stands to lose the studio a lot of money. Although Lionsgate did mitigate some of the risks by selling foreign rights, sources told Deadline that Borderlands could still lose as much as $30 million. “The success of our financial models doesn’t take the place of also getting the creative right,” Feltheimer added

‘Borderlands’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Edgar Ramírez, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Gina Gershon, Jamie Lee Curtis | Written by Eli Roth, Joe Crombie | Directed by Eli Roth

Directed by Eli Roth, Borderlands is an adaptation of the popular video game series developed by Gearbox Software. Essentially an action thriller about a rag-tag gang of space mercenaries, it tries hard to generate Guardians of the Galaxy vibes, but is let down by a lack of chemistry between the cast, largely flat direction and a series of uninspired fight scenes.

The story centres on kick-ass bounty hunter Lilith (Cate Blanchett), who’s hired to find Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), the missing daughter of business tycoon Atlas, the richest and most powerful man in the universe. To do so, Lilith has to return to her home planet of Pandora, where she quickly finds Tina and discovers that she may be a long-prophesied...

Borderlands | UK 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray and DVD now confirmed
Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Eli Roth in The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018)
Eli Roth’s Borderlands film comes to DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray in the UK this November – more on the release here.

After something akin to a crash and burn at the box office in August, Lionsgate will be hoping for better return when Borderlands gets its physical media release. It was quickly made available on video on demand services, but the studio has – and good on it – committed to a full physical media release for the film as well.

Directed by Eli Roth, the film is an adaptation of the videogame series, and it attracted quite a cast too. Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Kevin Hart and Jamie Lee Curtis are all part of the ensemble. Our review of the film – and we were one of the few who got something out of it, it seems – can be found here.

Anyway, the physical media release. Best turn to...

Ariana Greenblatt's 5 Best Movie Roles, Ranked
Image
Based on her creative output over the last few years, it's genuinely astonishing that actress Ariana Greenblatt isn't even old enough to legally order a drink yet. Born in August 2007 in New York City to an industry family, Greenblatt booked her first big role in 2016 thanks to the Disney Channel original series "Stuck in the Middle," which cast her as Daphne Diaz — the youngest of seven kids, who still loves playing with dolls but is also pretty vindictive for such a little kid.

After making her film debut in a small supporting role in "A Bad Moms Christmas" in 2017, Greenblatt's career really took off. So, what are her best projects so far? Bear in mind that Greenblatt is still early in her career, and based on her work thus far, her future is incredibly bright. Still, she's made some pretty solid stuff since 2017, including some absolutely enormous blockbusters. Here are her five best roles,...

The Borderlands Movie Ignored The Video Game's Best Villain Despite Major Character Connection
Image
The Borderlands movie was a massive disappointment for many, and this was in large part due to the fact that it ignored the franchise's best video game villain despite his major connection to a movie main character. The cast of characters in the Borderlands movie is full of many of the most iconic characters from the video game series, with Lilith, Tiny Tiny, Roland, and more appearing in the film. However, what is possibly the most iconic member of the Borderlands franchise's cast wasn't in the movie at all, with this being the film's biggest missed opportunity.

2024's Borderlands movie was one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year for fans of the video game franchise, with many hoping that the crude humor and visual flairs of the source material could be successfully translated to the big screen. However, Borderlands's poor box office and critical reception proved that...

10 Most Likely Borderlands 4 Predictions
Image
The first official Borderlands 4 trailer is out, and so are many theories for the upcoming game. The trailer was revealed shortly after the disastrous reception of the Borderlands movie. The intention may have been to distract fans from the movie's poor reception. If so, it did so brilliantly, shifting the focus to the next game in the beloved series and getting the community to talk about it instead.

[Warning: Spoilers for the full Borderlands series, especially Borderlands 3.]

Borderlands 4 will continue the story of the previous games, but the trailer is just a teaser and doesn't give much away. So far, the only thing that's been officially confirmed is that the game will feature four brand-new vault hunters, which is not really news as that's been true for every one of the previous titles. Even though the trailer is only a minute and a half long, it has given rise to plenty of predictions for the game,...

Ambitious Sci-Fi Films That Ruined Their Franchise Potential
Image
Science fiction has many successful franchises. Some of the most notable include Alien, Transformers, and Jurassic Park, which are still making new installments for audiences. For a sci-fi movie franchise to carry on across multiple installments, ambition and execution are crucial. Whether with original ideas or acclaimed source material, there were specific sci-fi movies that had the potential for multi-film franchises.

However, through a mix of mediocre critical and commercial reception, these would-be franchises stopped after their debut installment. The problem with these sci-fi movies was their inability to effectively translate their great ambition or beloved source material to the big screen. As a result, they fail to generate enough excitement to garner a future sequel. Between John Carter and Jupiter Ascending, several promising sci-fi films didn't spawn an entire franchise.

Borderlands Wants To Be Guardians Of The Galaxy So Badly That It Even Has A Tiny Marvel Connection
Image
Borderlands wanted to channel Guardians of the Galaxy's attitude and tone so badly that it ended up featuring a tiny Marvel Cinematic Universe connection in the form of one of its actors. Ariana Greenblatt, who plays Tiny Tina, also appeared in the MCU six years before landing a crucial part in Eli Roth's Borderlands adaptation. Based on the bestselling video game series of the same name, Borderlands couldn't even break a $10 million box office over its opening weekend. Needless to say, a lot went wrong with the action-comedy flick, from its story to most of its casting choices.

Led by Cate Blanchett's bounty hunter Lilith, Borderlands' cast of characters is made up of misfits with a penchant for violence. Tiny Tina, a feral child with a love for explosions, encapsulates that characterization more than most. Although Borderlands changes Tiny Tina's origins by turning her into the daughter...

‘Borderlands’ Ending Explained & Movie Recap: What Was Inside The Vault?
Image
The ongoing decade has seen video game-oriented media going through a major revival, and with the genre being a hot favorite among viewers nowadays, every major studio and director want to get a piece of the potential success by taking on a popular IP. However, as is the case with most pop culture genres nowadays, overcrowding of content ultimately leads to saturation, and the cinematic adaptation of Borderlands is one such example. Director Eli Roth most definitely should have refused the offer to direct a big-budget movie adaptation of the looter-shooter game and stuck to his territory of horror and splatter movies—because after seeing the movie for the first time, even the most avid fans of the game series will acknowledge that this cookie-cutter entry deserves every bit of harsh criticism it has gotten since its release. Right from characterization to plot structure, the production reeks of laziness and...

‘Borderlands’ Ending Explained & Film Summary: Is Deukalian Atlas Dead Or Alive?
Image
The fact that the Borderlands film was first officially announced in 2015 and then finally released nine years later in 2024 already hinted at the shaky foundations that it was being built on. But perhaps those who held out hope and waited so long, mostly fans of the 2K Looter Shooter videogame franchise, would not have expected the film to be this plain and boring. While the Borderlands games are known for their out-of-proportion action and story moments, along with a very distinct style of humor, the film has almost none of the franchise’s characteristic elements. The plot follows a bounty hunter, Lilith, who is hired by the ruthless head of a corporation to find his daughter, but her mission leads to a number of unexpected discoveries about the world and herself. Overall, Borderlands makes for a very average watching experience and should most definitely be avoided by fans of the video game series.

Borderlands Sets PVOD Release After Disastrous Box Office Run
Image
Borderlands is getting another shot at finding an audience. Lionsgate has revealed that the video game adaptation will be heading to PVOD this Friday.

Although Borderlands has been in theaters for less than a month, the movie has been a major flop at the box office. At the time of writing, Borderlands has only grossed $25.1 million worldwide off a budget of $120 million, becoming one of the biggest box-office bombs of all time. This is likely why Lionsgate is releasing Borderlands on PVOD on Friday, Aug. 30, hoping that those who don't frequent the theater (or read reviews) will buy or rent the movie at home.

Borderlands Hits PVOD This Friday... Just Three Weeks After Its Theatrical Release
Image
Borderlands is coming home... less than a month after it was released in theaters.

Lionsgate has announced that the star-studded but critically-panned video game adaptation will be available to purchase on Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) and Premium Electronic Sell-Through (Est) from this Friday, August 30.

We didn't expect the movie to stay in theaters for too much longer after a disastrous stint at the box office (it grossed just over $24 million with an estimated $120 million budget), but its home release is happening quite a bit sooner than analysts had predicted.

There's always a slim chance the movie will find a new lease of life on Digital and Blu-ray, but between the dismal Bo returns and the similarly awful reviews, it's probably safe to assume that this franchise is well and truly dead in the water.

Borderlands is ready to make it rain body parts in your home with a PVOD release sooner than you’d think
Image
Lionsgate is bringing Eli Roth’s Borderlands to Premium Video on Demand later this month to lick its wounds after a dismal box office performance. Beginning August 30, you can purchase Borderlands via PVOD and Premium Electronic Sell-Through. The tale of the film’s journey to the silver screen and subsequent failure at the box office is legend, with journalists and fans baffled by the movie’s ability to misfire despite boasting 17.75 million guns.

I don’t know that anything could have saved Borderlands from its unfortunate fate. The humor of the video game franchise is obnoxious and dated at best, with characters barking in leet speak amidst a Warrior Road-like setting. While colorful characters populate the franchise, production for Borderlands became a hellish experience, with delays, rewrites, and a lack of real stakes making the project’s success an up-dune battle.

The only thing going for Borderlands before release was the film’s cast,...

How To Watch Borderlands, The Biggest Bomb Of The Year, At Home
Image
As of this writing, Eli Roth's new action-comedy "Borderlands," based on the popular video game series, has grossed just over $24 million at the box office. This is an abysmal number, given that the film cost an estimated $120 million to make. It's a little too early to call it one of the biggest box office bombs of all time, but it's certainly one of the biggest bombs of the year. Given that it was based on a beloved video game property, the failure of "Borderlands" was particularly visible to a mass audience, playing into a long held prejudice against game adaptations. There are only scant great films to have been based on video games, and "Borderlands" certainly isn't one of them.

"Borderlands" received terrible notices, boasting a mere 10% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 151 reviews. /Film's own Bill Bria praised the film's candy-colored visuals, and enjoyed watching cast members...

Ariana Greenblatt's Best Movie Roles, Ranked
Image
Ariana Greenblatt hasn't even been alive for two decades, and she's already had a career most can only dream of. Since 2015, Greenblatt has made herself known as a capable character actor and a genuinely charming presence in almost every movie and television show she's been a part of. Even more impressive is the track record of the films and series she's been a part of and the success of even her smallest roles.

From Star Wars to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to 2023's biggest blockbuster, Ariana Greenblatt has made her way through a fair share of franchises. With films like the highly anticipated Now You See Me 3 on the horizon, it seems Greenblatt's career is only just beginning, and that fans have yet to see everything she has to offer. Even still, her previous roles have already become such staples of pop culture that they deserve a conversation in their own right.

Borderlands is being fast-tracked to video on demand services
Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, and Eli Roth in The House with a Clock in Its Walls (2018)
Eli Roth’s Borderlands movie is exiting cinemas at some speed, as Lionsgate prepares a video on demand release within weeks.

Much has been made of the $100m asking price for the long-awaited movie adaptation of the videogame series Borderlands. The successful games though were finally turned into a film of some resources, with Eli Roth directing and co-writing the script.

Still, even though there were a few outliers, the critical consensus was that Eli Roth and his team hadn’t quite hit the mark here. Furthermore, the box office returns suggest that Lionsgate’s investment in the feature might take some time to recoup, and that the cinema days of Borderlands have come to a fairly abrupt end.

As per the modern way then, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the movie will now be leaping to premium video on demand services at some speed. While we await a UK announcement,...

Borderlands Dismal Rotten Tomatoes Shouldn't Be A Surprise After Brutal 13-Year Trend
Image
Borderlands' Rotten Tomatoes score shouldn't shock anyone given director Eli Roth's history with critics. The movie mixes sci-fi, action, and comedy, featuring Cate Blanchett leading a ragtag crew. Despite its popularity as a video game, Borderlands flopped at the box office due to its predictable plot.

Although Borderlands might have a disastrous Rotten Tomatoes score, this shouldn't come as a surprise thanks to director Eli Roths history with critics. Borderlands is an adaptation of the video game franchise of the same name. The Borderlands Cinematic Universe Was Destined To Fail Even Before Its Box Office Flop For 1 Reason
Image
Spoilers are ahead for the Borderlands movie's ending.

Handsome Jack's absence from the Borderlands movie was a missed opportunity for a complex and compelling villain. The film's decision to create a generic antagonist like Atlas instead of utilizing existing characters undermined its potential. By changing characters' origins and omitting key figures, the Borderlands movie failed to resonate with fans and performed poorly, putting the franchise's planned cinematic universe at risk.

Even before the film was panned by critics and audiences alike, the planned Borderlands Cinematic Universe was destined to fail. Director and co-writer Eli Roth's sci-fi action-comedy adaptation of the bestselling video game series tries to be its own thing a project that pulls from the source material's catalog of characters, locations, weapons, and plot points, but, ultimately, alters fundamental traits. Although Borderlands' cast of characters calls upon fan-favorite personalities, including Lilith (Cate Blanchett), Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt), and...

How Cate Blanchett's Casting As Lilith Started A Chain Of Problems For The Borderlands Movie
Image
Spoilers are ahead for the Borderlands movie's ending.

Cate Blanchett's star power was misused in Borderlands, which made a major mistake by making Lilith the clear-cut main character. Borderlands failed to adapt the beloved characters and ensemble-driven storytelling of the video game series. Altering characters like Tiny Tina to serve Lilith's story undermine the essence of the Borderlands franchise.

There's no denying that two-time Oscar-winning actor Cate Blanchett is an asset to every film she's part of, but, unfortunately, her character of Lilith began a chain reaction of problems for the Borderlands movie. An adaptation of Gearbox Software's bestselling video game series of the same name, Borderlands landed a dismal Rotten Tomatoes score right out of the gate. With terrible buzz from critics and audiences alike, director Eli Roth's Borderlands became a box office disappointment, garnering less than $10 million over its opening weekend against a $120 million budget.

Borderlands: What The Cast Look Like in The Film Vs The Game
Image
The Borderlands movie (2024) differs greatly from the game, focusing on comedic elements and a star-studded ensemble cast. Main characters like Lilith and Roland are portrayed differently in the film, with changes in age, personality, and background. The addition of original characters like Atlas and changes to fan-favorites like Tiny Tina showcase deviations from the game's storyline.

The new Borderlands movie arrived in theaters in 2024, but Eli Roth's Borderlands cast vs. game differs greatly in their portrayals. The Gearbox video game series of the same name blends first-person shooting with role-playing elements in a space-western environment. There were three main games and several spinoffs focusing on different parts of this universe. For example, in the games, Lilith is a vault hunter, but things change in the movie as she is sent to find someone's missing daughter.

As a movie, Borderlands is a sci-fi-action comedy with an all-star cast that attempts...

Borderlands Review: It's Not as Bad as You Think - But It's Not Good Either
Image
The following contains spoilers for Borderlands, which is currently playing in theaters nationwide.

Video game adaptations can be a tricky thing to get right. While recent television adaptations of games succeeded, like HBO's The Last of Us or Prime Video's Fallout, most video game movies are heavily panned. Many video games have rich worldbuilding, so for a filmmaker taking a stab at adapting a game to film, the trick is to just have fun. Borderlands, directed by Eli Roth, may be silly, campy, and possibly even a little bit schlocky, but everyone involved seems to be having the best time. If the viewer is able to see past loads of poop jokes and some choppy editing, they will be drifted away by Borderlands' captivating weirdness and grit.

Borderlands takes place in a not-so-distant future, where bounty hunters, creatures, and killers roam different planets around the solar system. Cate Blanchett stars as Lilith,...

Borderlands Already Introduced The Final Boss For A Potential Sequel
Image
Spoilers are ahead for Borderlands' ending.

The Borderlands movie sets up a potential sequel with the introduction of The Destroyer in its closing minutes. The Destroyer, a crucial figure in the video game franchise, could serve as the final boss in Borderlands 2. The movie's focus on the Eridians and Lilith's role as Pandora's protector are further evidence that the team will take on The Destroyer in a future film.

While it's hard to imagine the Borderlands movie receiving a follow-up film, Eli Roth's adaptation of the beloved video game series did introduce a final boss for its potential second movie. A sci-fi action-comedy romp based on the Borderlands video games, the latest entry in Roth's filmography didn't succeed by any metric. Aside from Borderlands' dismal (and rare) Rotten Tomatoes score, the movie made less than $10 million over its opening weekend. Before Borderlands became a box office flop,...

Your browser does not support the video tag. Borderlands follows Lilith and her team of misfits on a mission to recover a tycoon's missing daughter on the chaotic planet Pandora. The star-studded cast includes Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Ariana Greenblatt, Jamie Lee Curtis, and more in this action-comedy. The movie captures the essence of the iconic video game franchise, promising a fast-paced, explosively fun time for fans and newcomers alike.

Lilith and her band of unlikely allies will encounter a variety of personalities in Borderlands. The movie serves as the first adaptation of Gearbox Software's iconic action franchise of the same name, which puts players in the post-apocalyptic-like world of Pandora, an alien planet once the home of several interstellar megacorporations that's now a wasteland populated with bandits and raiders, as well as deadly monsters protecting mythical Vaults, which are said to be filled with enormous treasure...

10 Biggest Borderlands Video Game Characters Missing From The Movie
Image
Borderlands movie changes story by focusing on Lilith & Atlas, missing key characters like Handsome Jack, creating mixed reactions. Director's choice to exclude fan-favorite characters like Brick & Mordecai leaves room for potential sequel but disappoints some fans. Despite missing beloved characters like Gaige & Dr. Zed, Borderlands movie introduces new narrative elements, receiving mixed reviews.

Despite its impressive ensemble cast, the Borderlands movie is missing many of the most recognizable and compelling characters from the Borderlands video games. While some fans believe this was by choice Borderlands' missing characters set up a sequel, in some ways director Eli Roth's decision to pull from all the installments in the franchise and craft a new story around the bounty hunter Lilith (Cate Blanchett) resulted in massive alterations. Instead of centering on the first game's Vault Hunter squad, the movie sees corporate magnate Atlas (Edgar Ramrez) hiring Lilith to rescue his daughter, Tiny Tina...

Borderlands Movie Called Out for Not Crediting Claptrap Rigger and Artist
Image
Borderlands, based on the video game of the same name, has found itself in hot water. Heavily scrutinized by film critics, the movie is now being called out for something else a lack of credits.

Robbie Reid, a freelance senior rigger, says he was omitted from the credits of Borderlands. Not only that, but he was also left out on the IMDb website, which lists eight riggers, and Reid is not one of them. He reported that he worked on rigging one of the most notable characters from the franchise, Claptrap, for 5 months. He said on X, "This time 3 years ago I was rigging the CG asset of Claptrap for the Borderlands movieI worked on him for 5 consecutive months. Neither I, nor the artist who modeled him (Who I worked with the entire time), got a credit for the film. Rigging is what provides a computer-generated model with a skeleton...

Movie Review: Borderlands
Image
The latest post-apocalyptic landscape sprawling wannabe sci-fi epic, Borderlands is not only both and extremely tedious and dull film, but it is also strikingly uninteresting and consequently sets a new low standard for director Eli Roth, whose previous output was nothing to brag about either.

Centered around a bounty hunter named Lilith (Cate Blanchett), the story follows her as she is given the assignment of locating the daughter of a powerful criminal named Atlas (Edgar Ramirez). This young lady – named Tiny Tina (Ariana Greenblatt) – is currently on the run with Roland (Kevin Hart) and Krieg (Florian Munteanu), when Lilith catches up to her and, with the assistance of Tannis (Jamie Lee Curtis) and wise-cracking robot Claptrap (Jack Black), becomes intertwined in a quest to unearth the greatest secrets in the universe (all of which appear to be stored somewhere inside a planet called Pandora.

Unfortunately, that description is about as...

What's In The Vault In Borderlands?
Image
The Vault on Pandora contains Eridian technology that can greatly benefit the power-hungry Atlas. Tiny Tina's genetic ties to the Eridians make her the key to opening the Vault in the Borderlands movie. Just like in the video game series, the Destroyer emerges as the monster in the Vault, setting up a potential sequel.

From the start, Eli Roth's Borderlands movie leads viewers to wonder what, exactly, is in the Vault on Pandora. Based on Gearbox's bestselling video game series of the same name, the action-comedy flick borrows from Borderlands' eccentric cast of characters and unique lore, but it doesn't merely graft one of the source material's stories onto the silver-screen experience. Given Borderlands' dismal (and rare) Rotten Tomatoes score, the movie might have fared better had it stuck closer to the games' narrative and undeniable charm. However, the movie does retain one plot point: a cryptic Vault on the planet Pandora.

Tiny Tina's New Origin In Borderlands & How It's Different From The Games
Image
Spoilers are ahead for the Borderlands movie.

The Borderlands movie takes creative liberties with Tiny Tina's origin story, making her Atlas' daughter. Tiny Tina has an interesting genetic history that makes her valuable to Atlas. The Borderlands movie combines elements from multiple games into a single story, reshaping characters like Tina to fit Lilith's narrative.

Although director Eli Roth's action-comedy film adaptation of Borderlands uses the bestselling video games as inspiration, the movie takes massive liberties when it comes to Tiny Tina's origin story. Played by Ariana Greenblatt (Ahsoka), Tiny Tina is one of the most beloved figures in the franchise, making her addition to the Borderlands movie's cast of characters exciting at least in theory. Out of the gate, Borderlands landed a dismal Rotten Tomatoes score, debuting with a shocking 0% on the platform. Needless to say, Roth's film may do more harm than good to its fan-favorite characters.

Borderlands stunt coordinator says the film was originally shot with an R-rating in mind
Image
Eli Roth’s long-awaited Borderlands movie has finally hit theaters, but unfortunately, it isn’t off to a great start. The project started production in 2021, and according to stunt coordinator Jimmy O’Dee, they were told that Borderlands would shoot with the assumption that it would be R-rated.

“We were shooting an R-rated movie when we did it. We always knew that we were going to go either 15 or R rating, it’s 15 in UK, for a slightly mature audience,” O’Dee told ScreenRant. “So, we were blowing people’s heads off. And we were cutting feet off. We were doing all of that. But then, you know, a lot happens. We shot that nearly three years ago, or we just finished it. So, I guess a lot happens in post, and they see where it’s going to go and what market they’re aiming for. But literally the idea and the brief was carnage,...

Borderlands Gets Off To An Abysmal Start At The Box Office... But No Longer Sits At 0% On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Lionsgate and director Eli Roth's Borderlands video game adaptation arrives in theaters today on the heels of some of the worst reviews we've seen for a major studio release in quite some time.

As we know, negative reviews don't always have an impact on audience interest, but in this instance, it's probably safe to say that cinemagoers haven't exactly been convinced to give it a shot!

Despite a starry cast and a family-friendly PG-13 rating, the movie took in just $1.3 million from Thursday night previews, and is now tracking to earn between $10M-$18M at the domestic box office over the course of its opening weekend.

International numbers could wind up giving it a bit of a boost, but taking Borderlands' estimated $100M+ budget into account, and we're almost certainly looking at a massive flop here.

It's not all bad news, though, because Borderlands is no longer showing as 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Borderlands Director on Why the Movie has Its Own Canon - Main Image

When it comes to video game adaptations, there is always the question of following the game canon or establishing its own original story.

The Fallout series works in the same canon as the games, but adaptations like Tomb Raider, The Last of Us, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie have to establish their own lore to make sense storywise.

Despite the large world established by the Borderlands game, the film still decided to have its own canon, and director Eli Roth talks about the decision to stay out of the game’s timeline.

Is the Borderlands Movie Canon?

Talking to Dexerto, Roth explained that he had discussions with Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford about what continuity the Borderlands film should follow, and they both agreed that they should be in different canons. Roth explains:

“The game’s the game,...

'I Want to Make a Great Movie': Borderlands Director Addresses Creative Freedom on Video Game Adaptation
Image
Borderlands, the newest video game adaptation, is now playing in movie theaters. Directly inspired by the video games, the movie is directed by Eli Roth and features a star-studded ensemble cast.

To promote the film's release, Cbr's Kevin Polowy spoke with Roth along with Borderlands stars Kevin Hart, Edgar Ramirez, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Florian Munteanu. During the conversation, Roth explained was asked if it was daunting to take on such a popular franchise. He said that it would have been if there was more scrutiny placed on his work, as is the case with other video game adaptations, but he was conversely given lots of creative freedom with Borderlands.

A Newcomer’s Guide to ‘Borderlands’
Image
It’s been a big summer for movies, and alongside blockbuster superhero team-ups and schlocky Shyamalan thrillers now comes the next video game adaptation in the form of Borderlands. Co-written and directed by b-movie horror maker Eli Roth (Thanksgiving, Green Inferno), Borderlands is an action-comedy assimilation of the popular first-person shooter series. It’s, uh, something.

Yet despite the critical mauling the adaptation is seeing, there’s a lot more of the Borderlands universe to explore. With seven entries released since 2009, including multiple spin-offs dipping into different genres and styles,...

‘Borderlands’ Review

The Borderlands Movie Cut Its Only Video Game Actor Cameo
Image
Borderlands movie had Penn Jillette cameo cut, disappointing fans of the magician's role as Pain in Borderlands 3. Hollywood stars take on familiar video game roles in Borderlands film, with Penn Jillette being the only actor from the games. Penn Jillette filmed scenes with Kevin Hart for Borderlands movie, but they were ultimately left on the cutting room floor.

2024's live-action Borderlands movie was supposed to have a cameo from Penn Jillette, who appeared in Borderlands 3, but his role was ultimately cut from the movie. The Borderlands cast is headlined by established and rising Hollywood stars to play the characters who gamers already are very familiar with from the video game franchise. As exciting as it might be to have Cate Blanchett play Lilith, Kevin Hart play Roland, Jack Black voice Claptrap, Jamie Lee Curtis play Dr. Tannis, or Arianna Greenblatt play Tiny Tina, none of them were associated with the IP in its original form.

‘Borderlands’ Review: Eli Roth’s Misguided Adaptation of a Classic Video Game Series
Image
In a galaxy far, far away, a psychotic wasteland dweller is strapped to a pole with explosives. Thirteen-year-old Tiny Tina comes skipping along, singing “Pop Goes the Weasel” before detonating the explosives and causing bits of the psychotic wasteland dweller to litter the landscape. She then introduces our hero to “the fine-ass ladies”—two explosive-stuffed rabbits named Mushy Snugglebites and Felicia Sexopants—who can help them with a major heist.

As juvenile as that description is, I wish I could tell you that Eli Roth’s Borderlands starts by directly copying an iconic scene from the Borderlands 2 game that introduces the ever-chaotic and maniacally performed Tiny Tina in an act of cartoonish violence. At least that would show that, like the games in the series, the film had some semblance of a personality, even if it’s a 4chan anon’s idea of one. And that would at least be...

‘Borderlands’ Movie Absolutely Destroyed by the Critics, Debuted with a 0% Rotten Rating
Image
Many video game fans will know that Borderlands is one of the most beloved action games of all time. Currently, there are four main games in the series, as well as some spin-offs and crossovers, but regardless of that, the series is undoubtedly one of the more popular ones.

In light of the recent successes of video game adaptations, a Borderlands movie was demanded by fans, and we now know that the movie is coming out today, but it seems that most fans will be disappointed, wishing that the movie – at least in this format – had never been made.

Namely, ahead of the US premiere of the Borderlands movie, which is happening today – on August 9, 2024 – the first critics’ reviews (for those who’ve seen the previews) are in and the critics have absolutely destroyed the movie, and it seems that the first audience reactions are also very disappointing.

Borderlands is a scuzzy, quippy grind through a visual wasteland

It almost feels right that an Eli Roth movie based on Gearbox Software's Borderlands, a garish video game grind-a-thon that indulges nimrod irreverence and cartoon havoc, would disrupt the good vibes that video game adaptations have been bestowed of late. ‘Borderlands’ Review: Cate Blanchett Rocking A Killer Red Wig Livens Up Eli Roth’s Mess Of A Video Game Adaptation
Jamie Lee Curtis, Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Kevin Hart, Ariana Greenblatt, and Florian Munteanu in Borderlands (2024)
Going in, I had my doubts about Borderlands, the latest overblown video game adaptation created to entice PG-13 moviegoers.

First off, it has a near decade-long history of failed attempts to crack its code, including Craig Mazin, who now shares a co-writing credit using “Joe Crombie”.

If this is the case, after wild small-screen success with Chernobyl and The Last of Us, you could understand why he wouldn’t want to be associated with the final product. Then its original director and credited co-writer and story creator Eli Roth shot the film during the pandemic in 2021. But when two weeks of reshoots were required, he had to turn it over to someone else due to his commitment to completing last year’s hoot of a holiday horror movie Thanksgiving. Thus, Tim Miller (2016’s...
