Image
Exclusive: Jacob Scipio is set to co-lead the as-yet-untitled real estate drama pilot ordered by the Onyx Collective for Hulu, opposite Edgar Ramirez. The series regular cast includes Leslie Grace (In The Heights), Mariana di Girolamo (Ema), Liz Caribel Sierra (Dope Thief) and Armando Rivera.

Production To Start July 14 in Toronto.

From Roberto Patino and Cassius Corrigan, the drama follows a cutthroat battle to dominate the Manhattan skyline, where two rival real estate developers (Ramirez and Scipio) risk everything — wealth, family and their souls — as their ambition turns into obsession, and their partnership turns into war.

‘Any Day Now’: How Eric Aronson Artfully Marketed His Indie Heist Movie + Exclusive Clip
Image
Exclusive: Filmmaker Eric Aronson spent 22 years in Hollywood as a screenwriter before moving back to his native Boston and deciding to take a new approach to movies. His feature directing debut, heist pic Any Day Now, recently had a limited run in cinemas and releases online domestically today. Check out an exclusive clip above, and scroll down for more below.

The comedy-thriller, which stars Paul Guilfoyle, won the Audience Favorite Feature at the Boston Film Festival in September and has continued to drum up awareness through what Aronson calls a “Madison Avenue meets indie filmmaking” method. That included staging an FBI raid at an art gallery in New York City’s Chelsea, as well as online ads and videos that have gone viral.

Billed as a “true-ish” story, Any Day Now is inspired by the real events of March 18, 1990, when $500 million worth of art was stolen from Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum.

'Any Day Now' Review: Reimagining an Unsolved Heist
Image
On March 13, 1990, 13 paintings worth hundreds of millions of dollars were stolen from Boston's Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in a brazen heist that still remains unsolved. Any Day Now creates a fictitious backstory where a downtrodden pushover is forced to aid the robbery by a loquacious gangster and his goofy goons. We're supposed to take pity and root for the wet blanket protagonist as he's used like a doormat from start to finish. That doesn't happen because the black comedy is a stretch at best and the narrative has plot holes you could drive a truck through.

The cocky Marty Lyons (Paul Guilfoyle) sits in his prison cell, interrogated by a pair of angry cops who think he orchestrated the museum robbery. Marty sarcastically responds that he wishes he'd thought of it. The scene then flashes back to the hapless Steve (Taylor Gray) being chased into a restaurant. He doesn't get...

10 Years Ago, Johnny Depp Proved His Best Days Were Behind Him With A Big Box Office Bomb
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"I only directed something someone else wrote once and it was a misbegotten adventure from the beginning, as much my fault as anybody else's." Those are the words of director David Koepp, speaking to UCLA in 2022. The misbegotten adventure in question was 2015's "Mortdecai," a globe-trotting comedy starring then-a-lister Johnny Depp. It was a massive failure both critically and commercially, one that Koepp doesn't seem to have an interest in defending.

Koepp is no stranger to big hits. As a screenwriter, he helped turn "Jurassic Park" into one of the biggest movies ever, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. As a director? It's a touch more spotty, but the man knows his way around a success. He previously helmed the thriller "Secret Window,...

‘Mortdecai’ is hauntingly terrible
Mortdecai

Written by Eric Aronson

Directed by David Koepp

USA, 2015

Seemingly late in the game of David Koepp’s Mortdecai, the eponymous character (played by Johnny Depp) asks his wife, “Are you quite finished with your barrage of insults?” It’s an apt question for the film itself, a cataclysmically unfunny, unbelievably tedious disaster of baffling misjudgments and multiple career lows that feels as long as Shoah, and only a little less harrowing. No such luck, though, as the film goes on for another 25 minutes. It then ends on people about to throw up. Also apt.

Lord Charlie Mortdecai (Depp, in a career low as both actor and one of the film’s producers) is an eccentric English art dealer and “part time rogue”, and the sort of whimsical, foppish figure who refers to America as “the Colonies”. (This film is apparently set in the present day.) He’s in...

Film Review: Supremely Silly ‘Mortdecai’ is a Pleasant Surprise
Chicago – I have to say while watching Johnny Depp in “Mortdecai,” I found myself amused. I rarely elicited anything more than a slight chuckle, but its indomitable spirit of silliness made it a not entirely unpleasant evening out.

This feather-weight trifle of a caper is only slightly more than the funny mustache movie its posters and trailer make it out to be.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

Depp as Mortdecai comes across as sort of a randier Austin Powers, with more of a roguish rascal aura about him. Based on a character from a series of novels in the 1970’s by the late Kyril Bonfiglioli, Mortdecai is another in a long line of upper class British bumblers. He has all the upper class affectations of the aristocracy with none of the brains. While the film delves deeply into bathroom, breasts and boner humor, the spirit of the character wouldn’t be entirely out of...

Johnny Depp’s ‘Mortdecai’ Mortifies Critics: 8 Terrible Reviews That Will Make You Understand Why
Mortdecai (2015)
“There’s now a Johnny Depp film on the books that makes ‘Transcendence’ look like an infinitely better night at the movies,” one critic wrote

Johnny Depp is poised to underwhelm at the box office for the fourth time in a row when “Mortdecai” hits theaters this weekend. And it’s no surprise: critics hate it.

The caper comedy about a bumbling art collector tasked by British authorities to track down a priceless stolen painting has accumulated just four favorable reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The rest, all 39 of them, declare that it’s just about as awful as the trailers make it look,...

Johnny Depp at an event for Waiting for the Barbarians (2019)
It’s Great Johnny Depp Seems to Be Having So Much Fun in Mortdecai Because No One Else Will
Johnny Depp at an event for Waiting for the Barbarians (2019)
Having combed Roget’s Thesaurus in vain for a suitable adjective to describe the Johnny Depp comedy Mortdecai, I’m forced to say it’s just ... bad. The direction by David Koepp is bad, the screenplay by Eric Aronson very bad — though if Aronson were a bubbly American 15-year-old attempting a British caper-comedy after thrilling to a lot of old movies (which is how the script plays), I’d tell him it wasn’t too bad because puberty is difficult enough. Depp is very, very bad. Watching his first scene, a bad echo of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, I thought he’d finally moved from emulating late (insane) Brando to late, slumming Peter Sellers and would spend the rest of movie swapping out wigs and accents. It quickly became clear that his bad, gap-toothed Terry-Thomas imitation (with extra eyebrow action) would be all she wrote. The badness...

Review: 'Mortdecai' Starring Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Olivia Munn, And Jeff Goldblum
“Mortdecai” will leave any viewer with a number of pressing questions: who taught Gwyneth Paltrow to affect British? How many jokes about genitalia can be squeezed into a single film? What exactly happens in this mad beehive of plot maneuvers? And most crucially —why would anyone make this movie? But the last one isn’t meant as a broad shot at “Mortdecai,” which is not without charm. The question is not meant to be snide: you really want to know why director David Koepp and screenwriter Eric Aronson decided to make this film in the first place. It’ll practically eat at you. The story sets newly bankrupt, mustachioed art connoisseur and eccentric dandy Charles Mortdecai (Johnny Depp) on a transatlantic romp to recover a stolen, priceless painting and reap the fiscal benefits before MI5 Agent Martland (Ewan McGregor) —who sustains a love/hate relationship with Mortdecai and a lust...

Mortdecai Review
There is nothing less cool than a person trying to act like they are cool – and it’s not that much different in comedy. A comic performance embellished for maximum mugging and silliness may come off with the exact opposite reaction that was intended. An actor trying to pretend like they are funny without offering a natural knack for wit or tickled charm comes off as deeply unfunny. Case in point: Johnny Depp’s hideously off-key portrayal of an English aristocrat and art dealer in Mortdecai, a globe-trotting comedy of sorts from director David Koepp.

The international locales, A-list ensemble, frantic running gags and trumpet-filled score makes Mortdecai resemble a James Bond parody, like 1967’s Casino Royale or any of the Austin Powers films. What the film sorely lacks is a distinct comedic vibe – or, dare one say it, a mojo? – to keep both the tone consistent atop the rapid-fire jokes.

David Koepp interview: Mortdecai, Jurassic Park, Indy 4
Mortdecai director David Koepp chats to us about the film, along with Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Spider-Man, Mission: Impossible & more.

This piece contains spoilers for Snake Eyes and Mission: Impossible (the first one)

David Koepp has a rather solid CV as a director, including Secret Window with Johnny Depp, the underrated ghost story Stir Of Echoes, and the really fun Joseph Gordon-Levitt bike messenger action film Premium Rush. But as a screenwriter, he’s worked on some of the biggest films of the last 25 years – Jurassic Park and its sequel, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Angels and Demons, Mission: Impossible, and Spider-Man.

He’s also had a hand in other notable Hollywood hits (and flops) including Carlito’s Way, The Shadow, Snake Eyes, Zathura, Panic Room, Death Becomes Her, and many, many more. He’s had a fascinating career.

His latest directorial effort is Mortdecai, a...

Mortdecai review: Johnny Depp dons a moustache to act the fool
Mortdecai (2015)
Director: David Koepp; Screenwriter: Eric Aronson; Starring: Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Paul Bettany, Jeff Goldblum; Running time: 107 mins; Certificate: 15

Since going mainstream in Pirates of the Caribbean, Johnny Depp has trawled for laughs with mixed results in big-budget fare like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Dark Shadows and The Lone Ranger. The costume and make-up department has become ever more important in the process of transformation, and his ostentatious 'tache is even a running joke in knockabout caper Mortdecai. This is the last straw.

Depp is a gifted comic actor and the character of Charles Mortdecai, an eccentric art dealer (created by novelist Kyril Bonfiglioli), benefits from his particular brand of effete charm, but this is a performance formed entirely of mannerisms.

The comedy is broad and rather brash, except for Mortdecai's elaborate turn of phrase, peppered with twee English exclamations of "I say," "old boy" and...

‘Mortdecai’ Review: Johnny Depp’s Schtick Wears Thin in This Caper Comedy
Mortdecai (2015)
Desperately seeking a “pretty movie stars chase art treasures in world capitals” vibe, this goofy soufflé ultimately falls flat

I admit to being a big fan of watching glamorous movie stars gadding around world capitols in the comedic pursuit of art treasures; I spent countless hours glued to the TV as a kid soaking in comic soufflés like “Charade” and “How to Steal a Million,” and I’ll even defend the much-maligned “Hudson Hawk” for its efforts to keep the genre alive in our modern, cynical era.

If only I could feel as charitable toward “Mortdecai,” a glamorous, jet-set fantasy...

No One Likes Johnny Depp's Mustache in UK Trailer for 'Mortdecai'
"What is that infernal thing on your lip?" If you think Johnny Depp looks terrible in the new rogue comedy Mortdecai, you're not the only one. Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor both hate the actor's mustache in the new trailer from the United Kingdom. Of course, by the looks of this trailer (and the previous Us theatrical trailer), it's not just the mustache that's a turn-off. This doesn't look funny at all. This feels like something that was actually imported from across the pond and just doesn't work over here. It's dry, but not in an appealing way. It would be nice if Johnny Depp did something worthwhile again. Watch! Here's the new UK trailer for David Koepp's Mortdecai from Webzine Check: You can still watch the Us theatrical trailer for Mortdecai right here. Watch: Johnny Depp is a Moron in the Second Trailer for 'Mortdecai'
There's a moment in the second trailer for the art heist comedy Mortdecai where Johnny Depp, as the title character, sighs audibly out of exasperation. That's exactly how I feel when watching this latest tease for the film coming in February of next year. Honestly, I don't know how this movie got made. No, I haven't seen the film yet, so I'm not saying that because I know it's terrible. But I'm saying that because I have no idea who this film appeals to beyond people who will see anything that Johnny Depp appears in on the big screen. Johnny Depp Doesn't Need Help with His Bags in 'Mortdecai' Trailer
"Bit of a moron actually." If the perpetually drunk antics of Captain Jack Sparrow just aren't doing it for you anymore, than maybe the bumbling, foolishness of art dealer and rogue Charlie Mortdecai will get the job done. Johnny Depp takes the title role in Mortdecai, the adventure comedy from Premium Rush director David Koepp. The first teaser trailer has just arrived and it basically introduces us to the main character from Kyril Bonfiglioli's anthology book series. Mortdecai seems to have a bit of a reputation, and it's not a very good one. Do audiences want another weird, trademark Depp character in action? Watch! Here's the first trailer for David Koepp's Mortdecai, originally from Apple: Mortdecai is directed by David Koepp (Premium Rush, The Secret Window) and written by Eric Aronson, based on the anthology by Kyril Bonfiglioli. Johnny Depp Is A Mustachioed Big Spender In First Mortdecai Trailer
Out of all the actors working today, perhaps none are more skilled at diving into larger-than-life personalities than Johnny Depp. Over the past few years, he’s played a swaggering pirate, an upper-class vampire, the Mad Hatter and a fierce Native American badass, among other nutty creations. And in next spring’s Mortdecai, he’ll be adding “debonair art dealer” to that lineup of delightfully outsized characters.

The first trailer for the film has landed today, putting the focus squarely on Depp’s mutachioed protagonist, who resembles a slick cross between Ralph Fiennes’ Gustave H. in The Grand Budapest Hotel and Steve Martin’s Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther. It’s a little hard to tell whether Mortdecai is more of a bumbling fool or a smooth operator from this early look, but the film looks to blend action and comedy elements. There’s not much by way of plot here,...

First Trailer for Mortdecai with Johnny Depp
The first and last time David Koepp ventured into comedy territory behind the camera, we came away with Ghost Town. This time around, he’s throwing action into the mix as well for next year’s anticipated Mortdecai, and with Johnny Depp leading an all-star cast, we’re pretty much guaranteed something special.

With less than half a year left on the clock before the action-comedy hits, Lionsgate has launched a great first trailer to give us an idea of the film’s tone.

The Trailer For Johnny Depp's Mortdecai Romps In
Mortdecai (2015)
Based on the beloved novels by Kyril Bonfiglioli - namely Don't Point That Thing At Me, After You With A Pistol, Something Nasty In The Woodshed and The Great Moustache Mystery - Johnny Depp's Mortdecai is a right royal romp of the highest order, with Depp playing an anarchic aristocratic art dealer named Charlie Mortdecai, and Paul Bettany his valet, Jock. Think Jeeves and Wooster, but with more sex, swearing and guns, and you've just about got the new trailer for Mortdecai.  brightcove.createExperiences();As you may have spotted from that very brief teaser, the quality of the books (and the characters, and Johnny Depp's moustache) has attracted some pretty starry stars in the shape of Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Goldblum, Olivia Munn and Ewan McGregor. Johnny Depp Gets Blonde Hair & Hipster Mustache in 'Mortdecai'
Well, the techno-thriller Transcendence may not have worked out all that well for Johnny Depp last month, but fans of the actor needn't worry, because 2015 will put Depp back on the weird side again. Mortdecai is an adaptation Kyril Bonfiglioli's The Great Mortdecai Moustache Mystery, the author's final novel which remained unfinished until satirist and parodist Craig Brown completed it. In the film, Depp plays the title character, an art dealer setting off from adventure to misadventure via Jersey and Moscow to a final showdown in a Buckinghamshire bungalow of unparalleled hideousness. Sounds pretty wild. And now we have a first look at a blonde, mustachioed Depp in the film, looking like a dashing hipster. Look! Olivia Munn In Talks To Join Johnny Depp In ‘Mortdecai’
Exclusive: The Newsroom actress soon could be added to the cast of the adaptation of Kyril Bonfigloi’s anti-hero art dealer novels. I’ve learned Olivia Munn is in negotiations to join Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow and Ewan McGregor in the David Koepp-directed Mortdecai. Details are sketchy about Munn’s potential role in the Lionsgate thriller, but it’s doubtful that she’ll be playing the Jock Strapp character, Mortdecai’s long-suffering manservant in the books. Eric Aronson wrote the script for the film from Bonfigloi’s 1970s work with Depp playing the roguish Charlie Mordecai. Besides her role as business journalist Sloan Sabbith on Newsroom, Aaron Sorkin sophomore HBO drama, the former Daily Show correspondent is also in the upcoming Jerry Bruckheimer-produced horror crime film Beware The Night with Eric Bana. Munn is repped by CAA and Mosaic. Related: Eric Bana, Edgar Ramirez & Olivia Munn Join ‘Beware The Night...
