Melissa Gilbert Says ‘Little House On The Prairie’ Reboot At Netflix “Will Do Things We Didn’t Get To Do So Easily In ’70s”
Image
TV’s original Laura Ingalls is speaking out about Netflix’s plans to reboot Little House on the Prairie.

In an interview with EW, Melissa Gilbert, aka the Laura in the long-running NBC series from 1974-1984, said, “there’s room in the Little House universe for all different kinds of stories to be told, just like there was always room in the Little Women universe to keep retelling that story.”

“These are classic stories, and no one’s done it where they hewed to the books completely,” Gilbert said. “[The original] was Michael Landon’s interpretation, and now it’s time for someone else’s interpretation. And I think there’s plenty of room for that. And I think there’s a lot of other stories to mine beyond that. So I think this opens the door in a lot of ways for all kinds of Little House on the Prairie projects.

Original ‘Little House on the Prairie’ Actors Defend Netflix Reboot Amid Fan Backlash: ‘It Will Be Different’ and Not Turned ‘Into Something Weird’
Image
Original “Little House on the Prairie” actors Dean Butler and Alison Arngrim are quelling concerns that the recently announced reboot will tarnish the legacy of the beloved 1974 drama.

In a recent interview with Remind, Arngrim, who played Nellie Oleson in the original “Little House,” said she’s heard two distinct fan reactions to the reboot: “People are like, ‘Oh my God, yay, a reboot. It’s the greatest thing that ever happened. The second coming.’ Or [they say], ‘No, no, no, not a reboot. The show is perfect. Don’t touch it.’ And they’re getting upset about it.”

Arngrim clarified the new series is “not really like a reboot” since it will be more faithful to Laura Wilder’s original books than the TV show. She hopes this fact will calm the nerves of “Little House” purists.

“So concerns that they’re going to run amok away from the books and make it into something weird,...

‘Little House On The Prairie’ Reboot Ordered By Netflix
Image
Half pint is about to become whole again: Netflix has greenlighted a reboot of Little House on the Prairie, the ’70s drama that has enjoyed a stunning resurgence on Peacock recently.

Rebecca Sonnenshine will serve as showrunner and executive producer on what Netflix is describing as a “reimagining” of the series based on the book series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Other EPs are Joy Gorman Wettels for Joy Coalition, Dana Fox, Susanna Fogel and Trip Friendly for Friendly Family Productions — who’s been pushing for a reboot for years.

“It has been a long-held dream of mine to carry on my father’s legacy and adapt Wilder’s classic American stories for a 21st century audience in a way that brings together fans of both the books and the original television series,” said Friendly in a statement. “I am thrilled by our talented creative team...

Child Stars Who Went On To Have Normal Jobs As Adults
Image
The life of a child actor can be a Faustian bargain. On the one hand, these kids get to play make-believe for hours at a time, and if their parents don't mess things up, make enough money in the process to secure their futures. On the other, without the maturity to handle the spotlight and all its temptations appropriately, things can go very wrong, especially if their childhood cuteness doesn't translate into adult charisma as they age out of the parts that made them successful.

Sometimes fans just won't let child stars grow up. Sometimes, it's just baggage that needs to be overcome, like when Brie Larson's child actor experience made her hesitant to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They might realize that they never should have played the roles they did, especially if they're R-rated. Not every child actor wants to keep acting either. For those who decide...

‘Little House on the Prairie’ 50th anniversary: Why Michael Landon’s classic TV show still endures
Image
Like any child of the 1970s, I hear a certain TV theme and immediately visualize three little girls in prairie dresses frolicking down a hill as their ma and pa look on with amused expressions from their covered wagon. Of the many dramas that have come and gone throughout the history of television, very few have endured like “Little House on the Prairie.” Despite a slow start in ratings, families smartly caught on to the beauty of this series, and many made a tradition of gathering around the TV on Monday nights to take in a show that sometimes tackled modern-day issues in a long-ago setting, and other times told amusing homespun tales. At the height of its popularity, the series made mostly unknown actors household names and became an indelible piece of television history. Read on for more about the “Little House on the Prairie” 50th anniversary.

Image
The Little House on the Prairie cast reacted to the reboot rumors. It’s not unheard of since reboots are all the rage these days. Back in 2020, rumors first swirled that the classic television series was getting a reboot.

‘Little House On The Prairie’ Cast Weighs In On Reboot
Image
In the modern age of television, reboots of old favorites are all too common. Back in 2020, rumors circulated that the beloved classic Little House on the Prairie was getting a reboot.

But today, the original cast doesn’t believe that will be at all possible. Keep reading and see what they had to say on the matter.

The Original Little House Cast Doesn’t Want To See A Reboot

This fall, Little House on the Prairie will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Over the years, many actors have passed away. But the surviving cast members are immensely proud to be part of the family-friendly classic. Several of them gathered at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival in Monaco.

Although there have been many adaptations of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books over the years, none compare to the 1974 series. And the cast agrees.

‘Little House on the Prairie’ Cast on Why It’s Unlikely to Get a Reboot: “It Can’t Be Repeated”
Image
The Little House on the Prairie cast is revealing why fans shouldn’t expect a reboot anytime in the near future.

Several of the beloved show’s stars, including Karen Grassle, Alison Arngrim, Melissa Sue Anderson, Matthew Labyorteaux, Leslie Landon and Wendi Lou Lee reunited at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival last weekend to celebrate Little House‘s upcoming 50th anniversary in September.

Though The Hollywood Reporter reported in 2020 that a reboot of the series, which ran for nine seasons from 1974 to 1983, was in development at Paramount TV Studios and Anonymous Content, the cast shared at a Saturday panel that nothing was currently in the works — and likely won’t ever be.

“There have been lots of attempts to do a Little House on the Prairie again,” Grassle, who played Caroline, the matriarch of the Ingalls family, told People magazine. “There have been shows, there have been a musical, and I...

‘Little House on the Prairie’ Star Alison Arngrim Dishes on ‘Mortal Enemy’ Melissa Gilbert
Image
Alison Arngrim and Melissa Gilbert might have played mortal enemies on Little House on the Prairie, but that couldn’t have been any further from the truth in real life. The actresses came back together for the show’s 50th Anniversary Cast Reunion and Festival in Simi Valley, California, on Saturday, March 23, and Arngrim spoke to People about their relationship on and off-screen. “Here’s Melissa Gilbert and I playing mortal enemies, beating each other senseless all week,” Arngrim said. “And then on the weekends, we’d go to each other’s house for a slumber party and we were hanging out.” Gilbert played the lead, Laura Ingalls, in the beloved series, while Arngrim starred as schoolyard bully, Nellie Oleson. On-screen, the pair often clashed in arguments and even physical fights. But when the cameras weren’t rolling, Arngrim said she and Gilbert were “like sisters” and even choreographed their fight scenes together.

‘Little House On The Prairie’ Celebrates 50 Years With Simi Valley Festival & Exhibit
Image
Melissa Gilbert had a ready answer when asked why fans of Little House on the Prairie always seem to burst into tears whenever they see her in person.

“Because I do! I think it’s just, you know … the show evokes so much emotion in people and made everybody feel,” Gilbert told the crowd Friday at the three-day Little House on the Prairie Cast Reunion and Festival in Simi Valley, CA. “So when they see us, they have the feels, and then the leftover feels from 50 years ago. Now they’re feeling it again through children and grandchildren. There’s this continuity and sense of family. This is a giant family reunion.”

Thousands of people converged upon Simi Valley’s Rancho Santa Susana Park to remember Little House on the Prairie, the Michael Landon starrer that debuted 50 years ago this year. With the promise to see stars like Gilbert, who played Laura “Half Pint” Ingalls,...

‘Little House on the Prairie’ Stars Melissa Gilbert, Karen Grassle, & Alison Arngrim Reunite Ahead of 50th Anniversary
Image
Little House on the Prairie celebrates its 50th anniversary this September, and to mark the occasion, three of the show’s stars, Melissa Gilbert, Karen Grassle, and Alison Arngrim, reunited on Thursday’s (March 21) Good Morning America to reflect on the iconic series. In a segment filmed for GMA, the three actresses visited the Big Sky Ranch in Simi Valley, California, where the show was filmed during its nine-season run from 1974 to 1982. In anticipation of the upcoming Prairie Palooza fan event, the area has been set up with recreations of the schoolhouse, general store, and legendary little house itself. “When we did the show, we went, ‘Yeah, this is a really good show, Oh, it seems to be a hit, that’s nice.’ But the idea that 50 years later, people would still be excited about it, it’s absolutely mind-blowing,” Arngrim said. As for what continues to drive people to the show,...

Hersha Parady Dies: ‘Little House On The Prairie’ Schoolteacher Was 78
Image
Hersha Parady, who won the hearts of Little House on the Prairie viewers with her 1977-1980 portrayal of Walnut Grove schoolteacher and Ingalls Family friend Alice Garvey, died yesterday in Norfolk, Virginia, following surgery last month for the brain cancer meningioma. She was 78.

Her death was announced by her son Jonathan Peverall. Parady died in Peverall’s hometown of Norfolk.

In a Facebook post last night, co-star and friend Alison Arngrim, who played the troublemaking Nellie Oleson on Little House, wrote, “Our wild, untameable, talented Hersha has left us. Rest in power.”

Although Parady made her TV debut in 1971 on the series Bearcats! and appeared that decade on Mannix, The Waltons and CBS Afternoon Playhouse, she debuted in her signature role of the Little House teacher in 1977, beginning a three-season run that would end with one of the series’ most shocking and well-remembered installments: The February 4, 1980, episode titled “May We Make Them Proud: Part I.

What Britney Spears Tells Us About the Exploitation of Hollywood Child Actors
Image
When Britney Spears attorney Matthew Rosengart appears in Los Angeles probate court September 29 before Judge Brenda Penny and argues for his client’s release from a 13-year conservatorship overseen by her estranged father, the motion stands to correct a wrong that began long before #freebritney, or Chris Crocker’s plea 14 years ago to “Leave Britney alone!,” or even her 1993 debut on the Mickey Mouse Club.

The abuse of Spears’ conservatorship, which rendered her the legal equivalent of a child, also speaks to an abuse that threatens many child performers — kidfluencers, TikTok and reality stars, and anyone who lives in the 44 states that don’t embrace the Coogan Act. Child labor laws have not kept up with the entertainment landscape, and it’s the kids who stand to suffer from it

As a former child actor who later became a homeless teenager, I think about stage parents and our inadequate child labor laws a lot.

Surprises Ahead For Stars In The House Anniversary Week
Image
On March 16, 2020, Seth Rudetsky and James Wesley launched “Stars In The House” in response to what they knew would be an immediate need for funds in light of the Broadway shutdown.

Now, one year and over 375 episodes later, “Stars In The House” has raised over $715,000 for The Actors Fund, and an additional $200,000 for other charity organizations who have needed support throughout the pandemic.

“We can’t believe it has been a year! We continue to be overwhelmed by the generosity of our viewers, who send in donations from all over the world,” said Rudetsky and Wesley. “We thought that after the first few weeks, contributions would dwindle and the show would be more about bringing some joy and positivity during these dark times. But the fact that we have been able to do both – deliver fun and financial support – is beyond our wildest dreams. We are so grateful to our team behind the scenes,...

Little House on the Prairie Reboot in Development
Melissa Sue Anderson, Melissa Gilbert, Michael Landon, Karen Grassle, Richard Bull, Sidney Greenbush, Jonathan Gilbert, Rachel Lindsay Greenbush, and Katherine MacGregor in Little House on the Prairie (1974)
Another day, another reboot announcement.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Little House on the Prairie is getting the update treatment.

A reboot is officially in development on a one-hour drama that would be based on Laura Wilder's beloved novels.

The new series would be co-produced by Paramount TV Studios, Anonymous Content, and Friendly Family Productions.

Details are scarce at this early stage, which is not uncommon for a project this early into development.

The book series was previously adapted into a TV series for NBC and starred Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert.

It was a roaring success and aired from 1974-83, having tremendous staying power.

TV movies followed the end of the original series, while ABC aired a miniseries based on the books in 2005.

The original series centered around the Ingalls Family, who live on a small farm near the village of Walnut Grove, Minn., in the late 1800s.

A reboot of “Little House on the Prairie” is in the works at Paramount TV Studios and Anonymous Content, TheWrap has learned.

The one-hour drama would be based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic “Little House” novels and would be co-produced by Paramount TV Studios, Anonymous Content and Friendly Family Productions. There’s no word yet on the creative team or talent that would be attached to the “Little House on the Prairie” reboot.

The book series was previously adapted into an NBC show starring Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert, which ran for nine seasons between 1974 and 1983.

The original “Little House on the Prairie,” also produced by Friendly Family Productions, centered around the Ingalls Family, who live on a small farm near the village of Walnut Grove, Minn., in the 1870s, 1880s and 1890s. The show primarily focused on Gilbert’s character, Laura, as the “Little House” novels were an autobiographical work by Wilder.

'Little House on the Prairie' reunion: The cast remembers life in Walnut Grove
Michael Landon in Bonanza (1959)
In 1974, TV audiences were introduced to the Ingalls family, a frontier clan living in a rustic cabin in the Minnesota wilderness during the 1870s and '80s. America was in the middle of its Me Decade, with an exhausting war and general upheaval at home. The weekly dramas of a farmer and his children—based on the Little House on the Prairie books by Laura Ingalls Wilder—were an irresistible look at a simpler time when people based their lives around family, home, and church. (All nine seasons are available on Digital HD on Amazon; seasons 1–3 are also available on Blu-ray and DVD from Lionsgate.

Chicago – Melissa Gilbert has grown up a bit since portraying Laura Ingalls on the 1970s TV classic “Little House on the Prairie,” but her roots aren’t far behind. We went to L.A. and got this moving truck and collected his mattress and bed frame and some stuff we each had in storage, and we started a journey across the country. We stopped in Albuquerque, where my family is, and they gave us some stuff. And we went through Memphis and up to Michigan, where his family is, and picked up his parents’ piano. As 2010 comes to an end, we look back and pick our Ten Most Inspirational Pop Culture Moments of the Year. Here's the second half of our selections. To see numbers six through ten check out last week's post.

5. True Blood Stars Support a Local Family

True Blood co-stars and newlyweds, Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin, wanted to help out a family that was clearly going through a hard time. 47-year-old Kirk Darnell died suddenly, leaving behind a wife and five children — and no life insurance policy. Eight months later, mom Missi and her daughter Genevieve were hit by a car and killed as they walked to a local store. The remaining Darnell children tragically lost both parents and a sister in less than a year. Moyer and Paquin donated items for a silent auction that took place during The Darnell Family Fundraiser in Venice, California...

Our Best 2010 Brushes with Celebrity

Between living in the Los Angeles area and writing about pop culture as a career, we have had a lot of brushes with celebrity this year. In the past twelve months we've conducted more than 110 interviews with big stars, rising stars and wanna be stars. From the red carpet at the Emmys to jury duty with a pop culture twist, it's been a year filled with idols, unknown gems and several random encounters. Here's our top ten.

10. The Pop Culture Trifecta — Nellie, Mary Ann and Cissy

We hit the pop culture trifecta the night we went to a book signing including Alison Arngrim (Nellie from Little House on the Prairie), Dawn Wells (Mary Ann from Gilligan's Island) and Kathy Garver (Cissy from Family Affair). And if we had to choose the best moment of the night it would have to be Alison telling us all about...

Arngrim Slams Disney Over Troubled Child Stars
Melissa Sue Anderson, Melissa Gilbert, Michael Landon, Karen Grassle, Richard Bull, Sidney Greenbush, Jonathan Gilbert, Rachel Lindsay Greenbush, and Katherine MacGregor in Little House on the Prairie (1974)
Little House On The Prairie actress Alison Arngrim has accused bosses at media giant Disney of creating a "factory" churning out child stars who are all destined to "implode emotionally".

Arngrim, who shot to fame at the age of 12 in the longrunning TV show, admits she was devastated to hear Demi Lovato has cancelled a tour with the Jonas Brothers and checked into rehab to deal with "emotional and physical issues".

And the actress is adamant Lovato's employers at Disney are to blame for the rising number of child stars who suffer meltdowns as they grow up.

She tells the New York Post, "It's like a plague going on here. Disney deals in volume. So, yes, they seem to be having a ridiculously high score of women imploding emotionally. And you wonder, 'What are they doing?' They're running a factory. It's high pressure.

"Look at how fast these Disney shows come out. Someone is discovered, and suddenly they have a lead in a series. Because of the Disney package, you can be 14, 15, go straight into the lead of a series before the show has been aired. They've already produced the fragrance, the posters, the doll, the merchandise. They've already booked the concert tour."

And Arngrim cites another former Disney star, Lindsay Lohan, who has been in and out of jail and rehab, as a further example of the pressure placed on young women, as well as former Mickey Mouse Club star Britney Spears, who suffered a highly-public meltdown.

She adds, "If Lindsay had never made a frame of film, she would still be seeking therapy?"...

Dawn Wells Talks About Gilligan's Island and Cookbooks
We always considered ourselves way more of Mary Anns than Gingers. Down home girls. Jeans and checkered shirts not sparkly evening gowns. More cute than pretty. So when we heard we were going to get the chance to talk to the Gilligan's Island star, we were thrilled. And of course getting to speak with her the same night as Kathy Garver (Family Affair) and Alison Arngrim (Little House on the Prairie) just sweetened the deal.

But why were the three doing a book signing together? Apparently the stars of TV days gone by know each other from various autograph signing shows and retro TV reunion specials. So when Kathy Garver wrote The Family Affair Cookbook, she asked Dawn to contribute the forward.

Dawn told us, "She came to me and said 'Would you be interested?' And I said, 'Well, I love cookbooks.' So I did it."

Nellie Olsen and Mary Ingalls—The Battle Continues Way North of the Prairie

Some rivalries die hard. In fact, some linger on and on fordecades. Take what we always assumed was just onscreen melodrama between MaryIngalls and Nellie Olsen on Little House on the Prairie. Now flash forward almost30 years to what has become an off-screen battle between the actresses whoplayed them, Melissa Sue Anderson and Alison Arngrim.

Both women published books about their Little House experiences one monthapart. Melissa Sue’s The Way I See It: A LookBack at My Life on Little House is a slightly impersonal, morefactual account of episode storylines with a little bit of behind the scenesinfo peppered in. Allison’s Confessions of a PrairieBitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated is a noholds barred, rollercoaster ride on her unusual home life, Hollywoodadventures, and relationships on and off the set.

Clearly Alison’s revealed her personality in her willingnessto share,...

Our Interview with Mary Ann, Cissy, and Nellie
Part One of a Four Part Interview

We hit the pop culture trifecta last week, scoring one night full of interviews with Kathy Garver (Cissy Patterson-Davis from Family Affair), Alison Arngrim (Nellie Oleson from Little House on the Prairie), and Dawn Wells (Mary Ann Summers from Gilligan's Island). Three of television's icons all in the same room—signing books, autographing photos, and talking about the good old days. Pop culture heaven.

The actresses turned authors made an unusual in-store appearance together last Thursday night at Larry Edmunds Bookshop in Hollywood. Kathy has written The Family Affair Cookbook, filled with recipes from the show and anecdotes to go along with them. Dawn Wells (who wrote Mary Ann's Gilligan's Island Cookbook in 1993) wrote the forward for Kathy's book. And Alison has been touring in support of her book, Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie...

Debbie Reynolds Dazzles in Alive and Fabulous

We’ve been fortunate lately to find ourselves basking in pop culture goodness—the Emmys, book signings by Molly Ringwald and Allison Arngrim, even jury duty orientation with Judge Lance Ito. But on the Richter scale of legendary celebrity, few create a bigger ripple than Debbie Reynolds. So yesterday was especially good. We were able to see Ms. Reynolds in her one-woman show, Alive and Fabulous, at the El Portal Theatre in Burbank adjacent North Hollywood, California—an opportunity that seems all the richer this morning given the news of Tony Curtis’ death.

Let us start by saying that she was as sparkly and delightful as we had expected. She dazzled in a head-to-toe glittery gold gown (and matching jacket) for the first act. And after intermission, returned in a shimmery blue pantsuit. D’lovely.

And she brought what the audience came to see. A whole lot of song,...

Book Review: "Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated" by Alison Arngrim
I loved this book. I was well over half-way through with my next read when I saw this book at the store. I was just going to read the first chapter and wait to read the rest until I finished the book I was already reading, but I stayed up until 3 a.m. reading Confessions of a Prairie Bitch. Alison Arngrim tells the story of her childhood, experiences during the filming of "Little House on the Prairie" and all that happened after the show.

The television stories were really my favorite part. Who doesn't love "Little House on the Prairie"? It's possible to watch several hours of the show every day in syndication. Reading Arngrim's stories about the set made me feel like I was privileged with top secret information. I learned that Michael Landon would wear tight pants with no underwear and drank lots of Wild Turkey. He also...

Alison Arngrim Interview: Nasty Nellie on ‘Little House on the Prairie’
Chicago – For every nice girl on the prairie, there needed to be an evil opposite who wasn’t so nice. Nellie Oleson was that nasty girl on the NBC-tv legend “Little House on the Prairie, and Alison Arngrim portrayed her. She has parlayed that long ago child actor part into a stand-up routine and new memoir about her experiences.

From 1974-1981, Alison Arngrim was the girl TV audiences loved to hate. After years of shunning her former nasty image, Arngrim’s new book is called “Confessions of a Prairie Bitch: How I Survived Nellie Oleson and Learned to Love Being Hated.” The memoir is a mix of light hearted humor about her former TV persona and personal tragedy about desperate real-life family secrets.
