This Day That Year: Anubhav Sinha’s Dus Completes 20 Years
Image
In a new installment of his feature series This Day That Year, Subhash K Jha refocuses on Anubhav Sinha’s Dus, a slick action flick with and all star cast, which just celebrated 20 years since its release.

This film is so cool, you probably need sunglasses to watch it. Unlike its thriller predecessors like Sanjay Gupta’s Kaante, Vikram Bhatt’s Elaan, and Rajiv Rai’s Asambhav, Dus isn’t phony-cool. Nor does it doesn’t seem like a poor country cousin of the Die Hard and Mission Impossible series.

Sure, the screenplay writers Yash and Vinay have borrowed huge chunks—sometimes without alteration—from several Hollywood actioners. And the whole cool-dude attitude that every protagonist wears like designer clothes is straight out of the ultra-chic Men-in-Black prototype that serves as an imperialistic role model for large-screen heroism.

Subhash K Jha Looks Back At As Love Story 2050
Image
Looking back at Love Story 2050, Subhash K Jha turns the focus on Harman Baweja’s debut film that also featured Priyanka Chopra in a double role and Boman Irani that released in 2008.

Producer-director Harry Baweja made Love Story 2050 as a showcase for his son’s aptitudes. To that extent, the film works wonderfully, creating repeated opportunities for the debutant to shine. The script – sprawling across two time phases and three hours of playing time – is a simple love story of two very good looking people coming together in the svelte, sweltering, simmering climes of Sydney, moving apart and then going into a futuristic mode without alienating themselves from the romantic genre that this uniquely-designed film inhabits.

Harry Baweja happily avoids the pitfalls of pedestrianism even when the boy-meets-girl plot gets into a trite and repeatedly-tested mode. The protagonists share a precious, fragile and tender chemistry. A butterfly perches itself on...

It was 51 years ago that one of the brightest stars of the Indian Cinema arrived on the silver screen for the first time.
