‘Ballerina,’ ‘Foundation’ Filming Location Czech Republic Rides Success of Revamped Audiovisual Law, Increased 25% Rebate
Image
Anyone who’s spent time in the “John Wick” universe — or invested countless hours in bringing the blockbuster Lionsgate franchise to life — could imagine the pitfalls awaiting the production team behind the Ana de Armas-starring spinoff “Ballerina,” which hit theaters on June 6.

Predominantly filmed in the Czech Republic, the production was a high-octane thrill-ride where “every second scene was a shoot-’em-up or an explosion or a car chase,” according to Dave Arrowsmith, the film’s supervising art director. That included “very big, complex set builds” — both in Prague’s historic Barrandov Studios and on location — as well as a bit of elbow grease and ingenuity when things didn’t go according to plan.

After an unseasonably warm winter, for example, when temperatures in the Czech countryside failed to drop below zero, Arrowsmith, SFX supervisor Ondrej Nierostek and their team had no choice but to build their own frozen lake from scratch.

Award Shows Continue Twitter Streak as ‘Moon Knight’ Holds Strong
Image
Live award shows continued to prove they’re a hit with viewers, as once again, the April 3 Grammy Awards and the March 27 Academy Awards landed in the No. 1 and 2 spots on Variety’s Trending TV chart for the week of April 4 to 10.

Last week the Grammys earned a record-making 56.9 million engagements. This week, the CBS broadcast added another 12.6 million engagements to that total, further solidifying the show as the top engagement earner on Variety’s Trending chart since its inception. Meanwhile, ABC’s broadcast of the Oscars added another 4.6 million engagements to its previous tally of 58.8 million, putting it in a solid, yet distant, second place.

At my funeral, please don’t use words. Just show this pic. Well, I mean, if you have other angles of this moment feel free to use those as well.

Netflix Parts Ways With ‘Bridgerton’ Spin-Off Production Designer Amid Bullying Allegations
Image
A production designer has reportedly been fired from Netflix’s “Bridgerton” spin-off “Queen Charlotte” over allegations of bullying.

British tabloid The Sun has reported production designer Dave Arrowsmith, who has worked on projects including “The Kissing Booth” and “Screw,” was “fired by Netflix chiefs amid claims of abusive behaviour and bullying on set.”

Netflix confirmed to Variety that Arrowsmith “has left the project” but wouldn’t be drawn on the reasons for his departure.

“There have been several issues on set, and a few crew members expressed concerns about a number of different incidents,” The Sun quoted an anonymous source as saying.

“Queen Charlotte” will tell the origin story of “Bridgerton’s” reigning monarch as well as a young Violet Bridgerton and Lady Danbury.

Arrowsmith recently published a photograph of vintage-style millinery shop Laird Hatters in Oxford with the caption “tech recce time #setlife #filmmaking #productiondesignerlife” on his public Instagram account.

'An Adventure in Space and Time' review: "A gorgeous piece of drama"
You can't rewrite history - not one line. But you can transform it into a gorgeous piece of television drama, or at least a writer/producer as canny and talented as Mark Gatiss can.

BBC Two's An Adventure in Space and Time - commissioned to mark Doctor Who's 50th anniversary - is a lovingly crafted piece of work. Gatiss has spoken on several occasions about how this 'origins' drama has been a long-held passion project and that passion has filtered through to every element of the production.

There's so much to admire, from Edmund Butt's brilliant score to Dave Arrowsmith's gorgeous production design, with its pinpoint accurate reproductions of costumes, the Tardis exterior and, best of all, the control room - perfect in every detail, right down to the green hue of the console.

The chief reason why An Adventure is so successful though is ultimately Gatiss's script.

Mark Gatiss on 'An Adventure in Space and Time': "It's born of love"
An Adventure in Space and Time - BBC Two's drama biopic charting the origins of Doctor Who and the show's first three years under its original lead, William Hartnell - was screened at London's BFI Southbank last night (November 12) and the 90-minute period piece received a rapturous reception - not to mention a standing ovation - from an appreciative audience of fans and journalists.

Once the lights came up, Mark Gatiss - the man for whom An Adventure has been a long-held passion project - was one of several guests to take to the BFI's stage and discussed how he approached adapting a slice of television history into "a human drama".

> 'Adventure in Space and Time' recreates 'Doctor Who' icons for biopic

"The strange thing is, because I'm a Jon Pertwee child, this was before my time," Gatiss acknowledged. "But I grew up with the story - almost like a...
