"Nymphomaniac": Acts of Profanation
The jurist Trebiatus defines the profane as that which is “Sacred or religious, and is then restituted to man’s use and property,” and this definition launches Giorgio Agamben’s “Eloge of Profanation.”1 The initial movement of pornography, as Agamben writes, was one of profanation, of restitution towards possible usage of the sexual act. Yet its profanation has been rendered powerless in the spectacle which pornography has become, in which not the bodies themselves are being exposed, but as Walther Benjamin writes ‘the conscience of being exposed itself’. And so pornography becomes the ultimate “unprofanable”—an act disempowered, ordered, assimilated, locked into a seemingly unchangeable relation, whose powers of profanation have been neutralized, and thus removed from potential usage by man.

This deviation of pornography’s initial potential changed the pornographic image into the ur-object of a consumption, one which leaves its image digitally intact, bolted into a potential cycle...

DVD Playhouse: September 2012
By Allen Gardner

Quadrophenia (Criterion) Franc Roddam’s 1979 film based on The Who’s classic rock opera tells the story of working class lad Jimmy (Phil Daniels) struggling to find his identity in a rapidly changing Britain, circa 1965. Jimmy is a “mod,” a youth movement dedicated to wearing snappy suits, driving Vespa motor scooters bedecked with side mirrors, popping amphetamines and obsessed with the new sound of bands like The Who and The Kinks. Their other pastime is engaging in bloody brawls with “rockers,” throwbacks to the 1950s, who listen to Elvis and Gene Vincent, wear leather biker gear, grease in their hair and drive massive motorcycles a la Marlon Brando in “The Wild One.” Often cited as a worthy successor to “Rebel Without a Cause” as the greatest angry youth picture ever made, it is that and more, including a first cousin to the “kitchen sink” dramas of scribes John Osborne,...

Nfdc Screenwriters’ Lab: Deepti Datt’s Dear Mira
Ash Baron-Cohen
As Venice International Film Festival began on Wednesday, DearCinema profiles for you the six screenwriters who will participate in the Nfdc Screenwriter’s Lab during the festival.

Screenwriter’s Lab, a 2-part workshop is conducted by the National Film Development Corporation (Nfdc) for the purpose of writing and selling original Indian screenplays in the international market. The workshop at Venice will be conducted by Marten Rabarts, Artistic Director, Binger Filmlab.

In the sixth of the series, Deepti Datt answers five questions about her project Dear Mira:

Could you tell us more about your story?

Rollicking through the insider-culture of iconic times in recent decades, Dear Mira is a dark-comedy about a young Indian girl, Roshni, and her mission to meet film director Mira Nair, while negotiating the minefield of her hilariously dysfunctional family across India and North America. A major part of the story is set in La, the City of Angels...

Mickey Rourke, Lenny Kravitz, Rosario Dawson in The Blind Bastard Club
The Blind Bastards Club, you should definitely remember this title!

When I first heard about an upcoming Ash Baron-Cohen‘s (yes, he is the cousin of Sacha Baron Cohen) project, I was like – what’s with that bastard thing these days?

But then, I realized that this definitely sounds different, and it’s worth our attention. And, not Just because Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson and Lenny Kravitz are attached to star in the whole thing.

They already describe this movie as “a visceral black comedy wrapped in an original love story.”

It’s about a congenitally blind man who lives life fearlessly and passionately with his group of fellow blind friends – a film incidentally which will include real blind people acting in supporting roles.

It is being described as a Trainspotting for the blind. The BBC or, Blind Bastards Club, is a gang of guys and girls who live life...

Mickey Rourke and Rosario Dawson Join ‘The Blind Bastard Club’
This is a wild concept: the Blind Bastard Club is a group of blind people who, “despite being blind, go to the shooting range, jump out of planes, get into fights in bars, and pretend they’re not blind.” As far as I can tell, this isn’t an actual group of people, but it is the central idea behind an upcoming film, appropriately titled The Blind Bastard Club. ScreenDaily tells us that its cast has come together with Lenny Kravitz, Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson, Rodrigo Santoro and Riccardo Scamarcio.

The summary of the film we’ve gotten describes the film as following “Jake, the leader of the BBC,and Angel, a sighted call girl who rollerblades around the city. They meet by accident, and he introduces her to his world as they both look to make the ultimate sacrifice for love.”

Anyone else think the whole “call girl who...

Lenny Kravitz & Rosario Dawson Will Fall In Love In “The Blind Bastard Club”
Lenny Kravitz has certainly caught the acting bug, since his relatively minor role in Precious. We already know that Lee Daniels cast him as Andrew Young in his still-in-development Civil Rights pic, Selma.

Today, we learn that, in what will be his first starring role, he’s now attached (alongside Mickey Rourke and Rosario Dawson) to a drama called The Blind Bastard Club – a $6 million project written and directed by Ash Baron-Cohen, scheduled to begin principal photography in April, in Brazil.

And if the director’s last name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s Sacha Baron Cohen’s cousin.

The film, also known as The BBC, or Blind Bastard Club, is a gang of dudes and gals “who live life on the edge despite being blind, by going to the shooting range, jumping out of planes, getting into fights in bars, and pretending they’re not blind.”

At the...

Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson and Lenny Kravitz to star in The Blind Bastard Club
With an interesting premise and great cast, The Blind Bastard Club is shaping up to be one intriguing movie. Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson and Lenny Kravitz have all signed on to star in The Blind Bastard Club. The film will be directed by Ash Baron-Cohen (cousin of Sasha Baron-Cohen), who is trying to become known more than “Sasha Baron-Cohen’s cousin.”

ScreenDaily reports that the idea of the movie is that this club of blind people get together and do things that most blind people wouldn’t do. Basically, they’re trying to hide the fact that they are blind. Check out a brief synopsis of the film below.

The BBC, or Blind Bastard Club, is a gang of guys and girls who live life on the edge despite being blind by going to the shooting range, jumping out of planes, getting into fights in bars, and pretending they’re not blind.

Kravitz, Rourke Are "Blind" Bastards
Lenny Kravitz, Mickey Rourke, Rosario Dawson, Rodrigo Santoro and Riccardo Scamarcio are all attached to star in “The Blind Bastard Club” reports Screen Daily.

The story follows a group of blind thrillseekers who begin bar brawls, jump out of planes and pretend they’re not blind - all in order to live life on the edge. The leader of the pack soon falls for a rollerblading call girl.

Ash Baron-Cohen (”This Girl’s Life”) will direct the $6 million feature and shooting kicks off in Brazil in April. Frank Desmarais, Andrew Mysko and Cory Neal will produce.

Exclusive Interview: Simon Pegg Talks ‘Paul’
The newest film collaboration from Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) is March 2011’s Paul, a film about two sci-fi uber-fans that encounter extra-terrestrial activity while attending Comic-Con in my hometown of San Diego.

As herds of geeks invade this week for the convention, we wanted to take a look at a draft of the script, as we often do with hot projects. Pegg had other plans, which we absolutely respect. We follow the policy that if an artist doesn’t want script details out there neither do we, and we’ll continue to act accordingly. Pegg asked us politely not to review it, we obliged, and he was nice enough to answer a few questions in return.

All of us at NiF are extremely excited about Paul, which pairs the comedic duo with fantastic filmmaker Greg Mottola (Adventureland, Superbad). Here what Pegg had to...

Cleaning Is An Exhilarating Feeling For Jason Schwartzman
The ‘Darjeeling Limited’ actor – who is married to fashion designer Brady Cunningham – always tries to look for positive aspects to everything he does, even mundane daily chores, but admits it is sometimes a struggle. He said: "You can be cleaning your house and all of the sudden get an exhilarating feeling. When I'm walking my dog and he does something beautiful – it's all about finding these little pockets of heat in the world. But it's hard. It's like mining for gold." The 29-year-old star says he has always been a positive person, even when having problems in his youth. Speaking about the similarities between himself and Ash, the young fox cub son of the titular character he voices in animated movie ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’, Jason added to the USA Today newspaper: "I related to that character. I didn't hit a growth spurt until a little bit later. "I was an athlete,...

Ashlee Simpson Said “Being on Broadway is a childhood dream come true”
The 25-year-old star played murderess Roxie Hart in the London West End version of the musical and is now reprising the part in New York’s famous theatre district. Ashlee starts her run on November 30 and admits she can’t wait to tread the boards once again. She said: “I'm honoured to be reprising my role as Roxie Hart, returning to the stage and joining this amazing cast. Being on Broadway is a childhood dream come true." Big sister Jessica, 29, is thrilled Ashlee has landed the part after her disappointment of being axed from Us TV series 'Melrose Place’ last month. Jessica wrote on her Twitter page: "I can't wait to watch Ash’ on Broadway in all of her glory!!! I get chillbumps from toes to noggin thinking about it!!! Yay!!!! (sic)"

Shirley MacLaine at an event for Dreamgirls (2006)
MacLaine, Dukakis in 'Poor' house
Shirley MacLaine at an event for Dreamgirls (2006)
Shirley MacLaine is in negotiations and Olympia Dukakis is in early negotiations to reteam for the indie "Poor Things". Ash Baron Cohen has signed on to helm the black comedy.

Rob Hickman is producing and financing through his Still Rolling Prods. shingle alongside MacLaine.

The story, based on true events, revolves around two con-artist women who befriend and murder homeless men in order to collect their life insurance policies. Trent Haaga penned the screenplay from a story by Hickman and Haaga.

The film will shoot in early May in Los Angeles or New Mexico.

"Poor" marks the first production for Hickman's Still Rolling, which is committed to developing and producing five projects during the next three years in the $5 million-$10 million budget range.

Before setting up Still Rolling, Hickman financed and produced DVD campaigns that teamed celebrities with entertainment, sports and educational properties.

The film would reunite MacLaine and Dukakis, who starred together in "Steel Magnolias". Both actresses have an Academy Award among their credits.
