Sky has unveiled seven original comedy shorts at the Edinburgh Television Festival written by and starring the likes of Rosie Jones, Desiree Burch and Jordan Stephens, while ordering Painting Birds with Jim and Nancy Moir (working title) and greenlighting a fifth season of Brassic.

The seven shorts, which will air on Sky Arts and YouTube in 2023, explore everything from dating anxiety and rural life to pub quizzes and imaginary friends. Scroll down for full details below.

Sky Comedy Shorts have been a traditional avenue for comedy talent, with Sharon Horgan’s Dreamland featuring Lily Allen coming from the program along with Samson Kayo’s Bloods.

Sky Deutschland has revealed plans for three new original series, which are part of a wider slate of 60 German and international series that will air in 2022.

“Autobahn,” a 10-part series, will follow a pair of police officer brothers as they keep their cool while chasing suspects at high speed. Shot across Bavaria, the series is from producer Action Concept in association with Sky Studios. The lead writers are Sven Frauenhoff and Andreas Brune. The producers are Heiko Schmidt, Andreas Perzl and Frank Jastfelder.

Set in the year 2036, “Tender Hearts” turns on Mila who orders a humanoid love robot from an advanced tech firm. The eight part series is produced by Odeon Film in association with Sky Studios with Eva Lia Reinegger set to write, with Pola Beck as director. Executive producers are Katja Herzog, Andreas Perzl and Frank Jastfelder.

I have only ever seen Quadrophenia once in my life and honestly I wasn’t that enamoured with the movie, I’m not exactly a fan of The Who and I am a child of the late 80s early 90s, so the whole scooters and Mod subculture is kind of lost on me to be completely honest… it was more of a thing that people’s dads were into! However I have seen enough movies or TV shows that have touched on the era (This is England for example) to know it was, and to many will always be, an important part of history.

Luckily though, this movie didn’t have to appeal to my nostalgia bone. I didn’t press play because I have a huge love of everything Mod.

The Quadrophenia cast reunite for this claret-soaked mess of dodgy geezers, shady drug deals and noisy guitar riffs

‘Starring the original cast of Quadrophenia” proclaims the publicity for this lightweight romp, and true to its word, it features Leslie Ash, Toyah Willcox, Gary Shail, Trevor Laird, Mark Wingett and scores of heavily accessorised vintage scooters. That’s about where the similarity ends. Rather than the 1970s mod revival, it feels like the work of someone still stuck in the late 90s, when Britpop was all the rage and there was a hot new film-maker on the scene named Guy Ritchie. Yes, we’re in that territory: small-time gangsters, estuary accents, straight-to-camera asides explaining who’s who and what’s what, and tiresome character nicknames flashing up on the screen like Roger the Fix, Ginger Nick and Danny the Face. Someone even refers to blood as “claret”.

As she seeks answers, she ends up losing herself further, confusing reality with memories of her past self. Starring the acclaimed actress Ania Marson as Ruth, with David Sterne, Leslie Ash, Catherine Banks, and Alex Boorman as her family members. Ruth is also a compelling companion to The Father with Anthony Hopkins, as they are both about the same subject of dementia. Spy thriller ‘Dawn Of War’ led the box office in its native Estonia.

UK sales outfit Kaleidoscope Film Distribution has boarded Estonian spy thriller Dawn Of War and added several new titles to its slate ahead of next month’s European Film Market (EFM).

Directed by Margus Paju, the Second World War thriller was released in Estonia under the title O2 and led the box office following its release on October 9, recording more than 40,000 admissions over its first three weekends.

Kaleidoscope will handle world sales, and also holds UK rights where it is planning a theatrical release this summer, pandemic restrictions permitting.

One of nature’s rarest items, a pearl is produced within the soft tissue (specifically the mantle) of a living shelled mollusk. Just like the shell of a clam, a pearl is composed of calcium carbonate in minute crystalline form, which has been deposited in concentric layers. Truly flawless pearls are infrequently produced in nature, and as a result, the pearl has become a metaphor for something rare, fine, admirable and valuable.

Hidden pearls exist in the world of movies, as well: films that, in spite of being brilliantly crafted and executed, never got the audience they deserved beyond a cult following.

Neil Morrissey has reiterated that he would "love" to work on a new series of Men Behaving Badly.

The sitcom aired 42 episodes between 1992 and 1998, and featured the likes of Martin Clunes, John Thomson, Caroline Quentin and Leslie Ash.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain about new episodes, Morrissey said: "I am always tempted. Oh gosh yeah, I would do it at the drop of a hat."

The actor again seemed to suggest that co-star Clunes would be hardest to pin down, days after saying similar in another interview.

Calling Clunes a "very busy boy", Morrissey added: "It would come down to scripts and it would come down to people wanting it in the first place."

He also explained that the idea of a revival "keeps getting mentioned, once every couple of years".

"Yeah, well let's see, I'd love to do it," he concluded.

After 15 years away, Men Behaving Badly returns to our screens tonight (October 17) for a one-off sketch during the Stand Up To Cancer telethon on Channel 4.

During the 1990s, the sitcom became one of the most popular shows in the UK, at the height of lad culture, with Martin Clunes and Neil Morrissey creating one of the best TV bromances in Gary and Tony. It also holds the distinction of airing on three different channels (ITV, BBC One and Channel 4).

To celebrate its (brief) return, here are just a small collection of the show's most hilarious moments to influence you to binge on the boxset this weekend.

1. Sailing ('Drunk', Series 4)

While Dorothy (Caroline Quentin) prepares a romantic meal for Gary, he and Tony indulge in an epic drinking session at The Crown. Before heading back absolutely sloshed, they partake in a drinking game singing Rod Stewart's 'Sailing'. This should happen every night.

Andy Murray's third round Wimbledon win was seen by an average of 4.66 million (25.1%) on BBC One.

It's the third heat of the culinary competition, and 5 new celebrities take on the challenge to become MasterChef.

Trying to impress judges John Torode and Gregg Wallace are dancer and choreographer Wayne Sleep, one-time EastEnder Alex Ferns, actress Leslie Ash, TV presenter Tania Bryer and former Made in Chelsea star Millie Mackintosh.

The celebrities are put through three tests before Wallace and Torode must decide who will be hanging up his or her apron.

English actress Leslie Ash had once confessed that she broke a rib while having sex with her footballer husband Lee Chapman, the Daily Star reported.

The Who’s 1973 rock opera Quadrophenia, a follow-up to their 1969 ground-breaker Tommy (which was made into movie in 1972), goes cinematic in this 1979 British musical drama film by director Franc Roddam (The Bride).

In the defiant, drug-fueled London of the early 1960s. antihero Jimmy (Phil Daniels, Meantime) is a teenager who’s dissatisfied with family, work, and love. He mainly identifies with the fashionable, pill-popping, scooter-driving mods, a group whose opposition to the motorcycle-riding rockers. Jimmy’s feelings, coupled with the groups’ overpowering intentions, leads to a climactic riot in the streets of Brighton.

Roddam’s rough-edged visuals work and Pete Townshend’s brilliant songs (including “I’ve Had Enough,” “5:15,” and “Love, Reign O’er Me”) work smartly together in this chronicle of youthful rebellion and turmoil.

A forgotten catalogue of hundreds of British children's films, all shot in the school holidays from the 1950s to 1980s, is to be re-released after lying dormant while many of their young stars rose to fame.

Performers such as Phil Collins, Michael Crawford, Leslie Ash, Susan George, Sadie Frost and Gary Kemp all got their first screen work in Children's Film Foundation features, which entertained the nation's youth at Saturday morning cinema screenings. The British Film Institute has announced that it will be releasing the entire catalogue and screening many of the best features at special events which are sure to attract nostalgic fans and social historians.

It's the mid-way point of the month, and Cannes or no Cannes, the Criterion Collection will do their traditional unveiling of their releases for three months down the line. After a banner July line-up, which included Jim Jarmusch, Whit Stillman and Aki Kaurismaki, could the beloved specialty top themselves for August? Well, perhaps not, but there's a few very pleasant surprises in the latest batch of announcements.

Perhaps the biggest news for cinephiles is the Criterion debut of the Dardenne Brothers, hot off their critically acclaimed new film "The Kid With The Bike." The Belgian filmakers haven't yet had a film included in the selection, but that'll change on August 14th, when both 1996's "La promesse" and 1999's "Rosetta" are released. The films will be available on both DVD & Blu-Ray, and contain new interviews, and a conversation between the filmmakers and critic Scott Foundas, as well as the usual trailers and booklets.

What did director Franc Roddam do after Quadrophenia? He moved to La, tried to woo Robert Redford – and ended up making MasterChef.

'You go to Hollywood," says Franc Roddam, "and the better you are at mediocrity, the better you'll get on. I tried to make personal films, which was a mistake." The director of Quadrophenia is explaining why he hasn't made a film in 20 years. After the huge success of his 1979 debut, the screen version of the Who's rock opera, Roddam headed to California with dreams of joining the gang.

He signed a three-picture deal with Fox, aiming to make ambitious, political, principled films. First up was Rainforest, a story about the destruction of the Amazon. Pauline Kael (1919 – 2001) was an American film critic who wrote for The New Yorker magazine from 1968 to 1991. She is often regarded as the most influential American film critic of her day.

Although a big advocate of the New Hollywood of the 70’s, some of her reviews carried a somewhat contrarian viewpoint of what many considered classics in modern era.

Leslie Ash has said that she would like to return to acting following her battle with a hospital-acquired infection. The former Men Behaving Badly actress contracted Mssa while receiving treatment in hospital in 2004. The virus, which is similar to Mrsa, left Ash with permanent spinal injuries. The 50-year-old appeared in Holby City last year, but told The Mirror that she would like to return to more regular work. "Acting is what I love to do," she said. Martin Clunes has ruled out a TV comeback for Men Behaving Badly. The 47-year-old actor, who played Gary Strang in the '90s sitcom, claimed that a sequel would not have the same appeal for viewers because the cast are now too old. Clunes and his co-stars Neil Morrissey (Tony), Caroline Quentin (Dorothy) and Leslie Ash (Deborah) filmed the final episode of the BBC One programme in 1998 and have since moved on to other projects. The current series of The Secret Millionaire came to a close on Tuesday night with an impressive 3.34m (15.4%). The third series of the show, which sees undercover millionaires donating money to the deprived, has averaged 3.77m (16.7%) across its eight-week run. The figure is well up on the average slot share of 9.9%. Channel 4 led the 9pm hour, ahead of BBC One's Mutual Friends, which took 3.16m (14.5%), and ITV1 profile special Leslie Ash: Face To Face, which had 2.77m (12.8%). Leslie Ash wanted to 'hide away' after suffering an allergic reaction to collagen lip implants, she has admitted. The actress continued to film police drama Mersey Beat in the aftermath of the incident in 2003, leading to widespread ridicule and a 'trout pout' nickname in the media.
