Jon M. Chu to Receive American Cinema Editors’ Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award

Wicked director Jon M. Chu will receive the Ace Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award from the American Cinema Editors (Ace), it was announced on Monday.

The award recognizes “an artist who exemplifies distinguished achievement in the art and business of film,” according to Ace. Film editors Maysie Hoy and Paul Hirsch will also receive career achievement honors for their “outstanding career contributions to film editing.”

All honors will be presented at the 75th annual Ace Eddie Awards on Jan. 18 at UCLA’s Royce Hall. Nominations will be announced on Dec. 11.

“Jon M. Chu is a visionary filmmaker who has captivated audiences worldwide with his dynamic storytelling and innovative visual style,” says newly elected Ace president Sabrina Plisco. “From the vibrant energy of In The Heights to the sweeping romance of the groundbreaking Crazy Rich Asians, his films are a testament to the power of cinema to transport, entertain and inspire.

American Cinema Editors has announced it will honor The Woman King director Gina Prince-Bythewood with its Ace Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year Award at the 73rd annual Ace Eddie Awards, taking place within UCLA’s Royce Hall on March 5, 2023.

The Golden Eddie is an award recognizing an artist who exemplifies distinguished achievement in the art and business of film. Past recipients include Spike Lee, Quentin Tarantino, Kathleen Kennedy, Christopher Nolan, Lauren Shuler Donner, Guillermo del Toro, Vince Gilligan, J.J. Abrams, Nancy Meyers, Martin Scorsese, Norman Jewison, Robert Zemeckis, George Lucas, and the Sundance Institute, among others.

Film editors Lillian E. Benson and Richard Chew will receive Career Achievement Awards for their outstanding contributions to film editing at the 72nd Annual Ace Eddie Awards, taking place on March 5 at the Ace Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles.

“Lillian and Richard are rock star editors and represent the very best of our craft and profession,” said Ace president Kevin Tent. “Just look at those credits! Ace Eddie Career Achievement Awards To Editors Lynzee Klingman & Sidney Wolinsky

Lynzee Klingman and Sidney Wolinsky will receive Career Achievement Awards for their outstanding contributions to film editing at the 71st annual American Cinema Editors’ Eddie Awards on April 17. This year’s show will be held virtually due to the pandemic.

“Lynzee and Sidney have cut some of our favorite and most iconic movies and television shows,” said Ace president Kevin Tent. “We’re thrilled to recognize these two extraordinary editors, their hard work and their amazing careers.”

Klingman, who was Oscar-nominated for one of her first films – One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) – has had a career in feature films and documentaries that included editing A River Runs Through It, The War of the Roses, Man on the Moon, Hoffa, Hair, Little Man Tate, Ali and dozens of others.

Wollinsky, who was Oscar-nominated for The Shape of Water (2017), won an Emmy for the pilot episode of HBO’s Boardwalk Empire.

Denis Villeneuve’s time-bending “Arrival,” Damien Chazelle’s musical love letter, “La La Land,” and Disney’s zeitgeist-grabbing “Zootopia” took editing honors in drama, comedy, and animation at the 67th Ace Eddie Awards Friday at the Beverly Hilton.

“O.J.: Made in America” (edited by Bret Granato, Maya Mumma & Ben Sozanski), meanwhile, won for best documentary. It’s considered the frontrunner for the Documentary Oscar.

Arrival won the prize for best edited feature film (dramatic) and La La Land took the comedy prize at the 67th Annual Ace Eddie Awards on Friday.

Zootopia won best edited animated feature film and O.J.: Made In America prevailed in the documentary feature category.

J.J. Abrams received the organisation’s Ace Golden Eddie Filmmaker Of The Year honour, and Janet Ashikaga and Thelma Schoonmaker were presented with career achievement awards by Thomas Schlamme and Martin Scorsese respectively.
