Steven Soderbergh on Having a Ghost and Then Becoming One with His Camera in ‘Presence’
Image
It’s an experiment that shouldn’t work. A feature film shot entirely through the point of view of a ghost who watches a family of four move into a large suburban home and over time witnesses their most intimate and disturbing moments, as a supernatural mystery begins to bubble beneath the surface.

Director Steven Soderbergh, better than anyone, laid out why a fully Pov camera doesn’t work for narrative storytelling when discussing first-person VR movies back in 2022. Said Soderbergh, “[That] there’s no Pov and reverse angle on a character who’s experiencing this is hugely limiting. That is how we engage with visual stories, is to watch the expressions of the characters so that we can read the emotions of what we’re experiencing.”

But two years later, Soderbergh did make it work, and while he was a guest on this week’s episode of IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast,...

Channing Tatum, Daniel Craig & Adam Driver's Logan Lucky is Streaming Success on Netflix
Image
Steven Soderbergh's 2017 heist comedy Logan Lucky has found a new life on Netflix. Despite a stellar cast and critical praise, the film under performed at the box office, bringing in only $48 million against a $29 million budget. Logan Lucky, led by Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, and Daniel Craig, landed on Netflix earlier this month and quickly made its way onto the streamer's Top Ten list, indicating that the hidden gem may have just needed a different platform.

Ocean's trilogy filmmaker Soderbergh directs Logan Lucky, but Logan Lucky and the Ocean's films have very little in common except the heist part. Where Ocean's is set in a world with glamorous characters and intricate heists, Logan Lucky features rural, working-class people who lack thorough planning in their robbery efforts. The latter follows the story of two brothers, Jimmy (Tatum) and Clyde Logan (Driver), and their sister Mellie (Riley Keough...

10 Best Movies Like Talladega Nights
Image
There are many hilarious movies like Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby that have the same blend of a classic underdog sports story and an absurdist sense of humor. Talladega Nights stars Will Ferrell as the title character, an arrogant NASCAR driver, opposite both Sacha Baron Cohen as a challenging F1 driver and regular collaborator John C. Reilly as his teammate and best friend. Talladega Nights was widely praised by critics (via Rotten Tomatoes) and became one of Ferrell’s biggest box office hits with a global gross of more than $163 million (via Box Office Mojo).

While Talladega Nights is a uniquely memorable movie, other comparable films are worthy of recommendation. There are other comedies set against the backdrop of motorsports, like Logan Lucky, and other movies about an ambitious daredevil who dreams a little too big, like Hot Rod. Pixar's Cars is another story about a hotshot...

Review. "Logan Lucky"—Steven Soderbergh Remains in Fine Form
There has always been something rather Hawksian about Steven Soderbergh. Speaking with the French magazine Positif in 1993, Soderbergh actually brought up Howard Hawks, a venerable icon of Hollywood cinema, stating, “The career I would like is John Huston’s or Howard Hawks’s. You know, very varied, many different subjects.” It’s true Soderbergh and Hawks diverge greatly in terms of form—the latter is straightforward, classically composed, no frills; the former is stylish, spontaneous, technically innovative—but their recurring subject matter, with a little stretching, isn’t far removed. Take the focus on working professionals in Traffic (2000), the Ocean’s films (2001, ‘04, ‘07), The Girlfriend Experience (2009), and Magic Mike (2012); though not exactly traditional Hawksian occupations, there is a firm appreciation for a job to do and to be done well. More than that, though, what connects Howard Hawks and Steven Soderbergh is their uniform consistency, not necessarily in terms of year-after-year quantity,...

Will Hitman's Bodyguard or Logan Lucky Be the Last Big Hit of Summer?
Daniel Craig, Channing Tatum, Riley Keough, and Adam Driver in Logan Lucky (2017)
After easily taking the top spot last weekend with just over $35 million, Annabelle: Creation, another hit Conjuring spin-off for New Line Cinema, already earned more than twice its $15 million budget back in just its opening weekend. Standing in its way of a repeat are a pair of action-comedies arriving in wide release, Lionsgate's The Hitman's Bodyguard and Bleecker Street's Logan Lucky, which both feature all-star casts. We're predicting that, since neither new release will have a particularly strong debut, it will be a very close weekend, with Logan Lucky just barely coming out on top with $20.4 million, followed by The Hitman's Bodyguard with $18.6 million and Annabelle: Creation with $18.2 million.

There are a number of factors that lead us to believe it will be a low-grossing, tight weekend at the box office. For one, it doesn't seem that either Logan Lucky, which brings director Steven Soderbergh out of his self-imposed "retirement,...

“Logan Lucky,” Steven Soderbergh’s big return to filmmaking after a four-year break, is gearing up for release next month, and the reviews so far have been unanimously positive, with particular praise being given to first-time screenwriter Rebecca Blunt. But here’s the hilarious and surprising new catch: Rebecca Blunt probably doesn’t exist. Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Blunt is not a real person but a pseudonym for Soderbergh’s own wife Jules Asner, comedian John Henson, or even Soderbergh himself.

Director Steven Soderbergh has settled a paternity lawsuit filed by an Australian graduate film student.

Frances Lawrencina Anderson fell pregnant in 2009 after a fling with the Ocean's Eleven filmmaker and recently took legal action against the star in order to receive child support payments for the baby girl she gave birth to last August.

Soderbergh's lawyer, Bernard Clair, reveals the two reached an "amicable" agreement on Wednesday, although the details of the settlement will remain confidential.

Clair tells the New York Post, "Both parties preserved their integrity."

Soderbergh, 48, is currently married to writer/journalist Jules Asner and has a daughter with his first wife Betsy Brantley.

The still married director has ended his baby-daddy drama with Frances Lawrencia Anderson—the Australian woman whose child he admitted to fathering earlier this year—by quietly handing over some cash to "resolve" the paternity suit she filed against him... Soderbergh's lawyer, Bernard Clair, told the New York Post that the duo, who carried on an affair in late 2009 while the director was reportedly separated from wife Jules Asner, have finally come to an "amicable" agreement regarding money for the baby." Director Steven Soderbergh Admits To Having A Baby While On A Break From Wife
It’s one thing to take a break from your marriage to clear your head and figure out your relationship, but it’s unfortunate when your soul-searching sojourn results in having a baby with the other woman who helped clear your head over…and over…and over. That’s the situation director Steven Soderbergh finds himself in at the moment. Soderbergh separated from wife Jules Asner briefly in 2009 and moved to Australia to direct a play. While there, he began a relationship with a woman named Frances Lawrencina Anderson who says that the pair hooked up on numerous occasions and ultimately, Anderson became pregnant with Soderbergh’s child.

Anderson has filed a paternity suit against Soderbergh, and says that the pair engaged in “sexual intercourse on many occasions covering all possible dates of [conception]…and as a result thereof, she became pregnant.” Soderbergh, to his credit “has acknowledged that he is...

Soderbergh 'Puzzled' By Baby Lawsuit
Steven Soderbergh at an event for Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002)
Steven Soderbergh's attorney insists the director is "puzzled" by a lawsuit from an Australian woman who alleges he fathered her daughter, because he has been in "settlement negotiations" with her since early last year.

Frances Lawrencina Anderson filed papers in Manhattan, New York on Wednesday, seeking child support payments from the married Ocean's Eleven filmmaker for her little girl, Pearl Button, who was born in August.

Anderson, who allegedly had a fling with the filmmaker while he was directing a play in Sydney, is also demanding an official declaration that Soderbergh is the baby's father.

A lawyer representing Soderbergh has now spoken out about the case, revealing the star voluntarily underwent a DNA test to prove his paternity and is surprised by Anderson's legal action.

Attorney Bernard Clair tells the New York Post, "My client is puzzled by the filing because they've been involved in settlement negotiations in Australia since April. We view this filing as nothing other than an effort to forum-shop, because of the mistaken belief that New York will somehow be more generous to a baby that lives in Australia full-time than the Australian courts."

Soderbergh, 48, is currently married to writer/journalist Jules Asner and has a daughter with his first wife Betsy Brantley.

Soderbergh Hit With Paternity Lawsuit
Steven Soderbergh at an event for Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002)
Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh has been hit with a paternity lawsuit from an Australian woman who alleges he fathered her daughter.

Frances Lawrencina Anderson filed papers in Manhattan, New York on Wednesday, claiming the Ocean's Eleven filmmaker "has acknowledged that he is the father of the child" and has undergone a DNA test to confirm the paternity.

In the suit, Anderson also states Soderbergh helped to cover her medical expenses throughout her pregnancy, right up until the birth of baby Pearl in August.

Anderson claims she "had sexual intercourse" with the married director "on many occasions covering a period of time covering all possible dates of conception, including but not limited to December 2009".

Soderbergh spent several months in Sydney, where Anderson lives, directing stage show Tot Mom. The production ran from December 2009 until February 2010.

Anderson is seeking child support and an official declaration that Soderbergh is the father.

Soderbergh, 48, has been married to writer/journalist Jules Asner since 2003. He has a daughter from his first marriage to Betsy Brantley.

New York — An Australian woman says Academy Award-winning filmmaker Steven Soderbergh fathered her baby daughter, and she's suing for child support.

Soderbergh's lawyer declined to comment Thursday on the lawsuit, and his manager didn't immediately return a telephone call.

Frances Lawrencina Anderson's paternity suit says the "Traffic" and "Ocean's Eleven" director helped pay medical expenses during Anderson's pregnancy, and a DNA test showed he was the father of the girl she had in August.

"(Soderbergh) has acknowledged that he is the father of the child verbally," adds the lawsuit, filed Wednesday in a state court in Manhattan. Anderson's lawyer didn't immediately return a call Thursday.

Soderbergh, who won the best directing Oscar in 2000 for "Traffic," married TV personality and novelist Jules Asner in 2003.

Anderson's lawsuit says she and Soderbergh had a sexual relationship at points including December 2009, when his play "Tot Mom" opened in her hometown of Sydney. Soderbergh wrote and directed the play,...

I saw Outbreak as a wee lad, and for approximately the next 10 years I was convinced that every cough was an early symptom of Ebola. To my over-active imagination, that half-baked Hollywood thriller was just about the most terrifying film conceivable, the invisible microorganisms that bastard monkey brought to the Us were infinitely more frightening than the likes of Freddy, Jason, or even the prospect of Freddy vs. Jason.

And now Steven Soderbergh has to come along and stoke my fears all over again with Contagion, a disease thriller (I pray that doesn't become an actual genre) that promises to be grounded and well-researched enough to scare me into replacing my wardrobe with a Hazmat suit. Soderbergh’s Knockout Retitled Haywire, Release Possibly Set For January 2011
Steven Soderbergh at an event for Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood (2002)
Steven Soderbergh's action thriller Knockout, starring Mma fighter Gina Carano and a hell of a supporting cast, has evidently been given a new title. The picture is now called Haywire, and looks to be set for release in January 2011 by LionsGate. The Playlist collated a set of tweets (from Soderbergh's wife Jules Asner and Rich Eisen) that talk about one of the first screenings of the film. In attendance were Asner, Eisen and seemingly Sasha Grey, who was in Soderbergh's The Girlfriend Experience. They mention Haywire as the title, and Eisen says the film hits in January. The latter detail in particular may be subject to change, but whenever we do see the film, expect it to be called Haywire. One other point about the film that we didn't report when it took place: while Dennis Quaid was set to play a role, he ended up having to drop...

Danny Huston, who was last seen playing William Stryker in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” will presumably grant the outlaw Robin (Russell Crowe) a pardon when he returns from the Third Crusade as Richard the Lionheart. (THR)

– Warner Bros and “Public Enemies” producer Kevin Misher are putting together a project called “Vegas Avengers,” a high-flying air combat movie which is said to “contain echoes of ‘Top Gun.’” Newcomer Soo Hugh will write. (THR)

– Christopher Heyerdahl, “New Moon”’s Marcus, sits down to talk about his character in the upcoming “Twilight” sequel.

Soderbergh may make a Limey sequel
Steven Soderbergh is apparently mulling plans to return to the world of The Limey – with Terrence Stamp along for the ride. While there’s no official word from the director himself, the news comes from what might be the next best source – his missus. Talking on the Adam Corolla podcast, journalist and Soder-spouse Jules Asner revealed that not only does he want to do it, but that he’s already got a cast in mind. “He wants to do a sequel to The Limey,” she told the host. “And Terence...

Steven Soderbergh is Interested in a Sequel to The Limey?
He may no longer be directing Moneyball, so what is Steven Soderbergh considering doing next? I think he's feeling a bit sore at the moment - his last two big projects, Moneyball and that Cleopatra 3D musical - were both shelved. So why not revisit one of his own classics from 1999? Soderbergh's wife, Jules Asner, was the guest on the latest Adam Corolla Podcast (via SlashFilm) and, as expected, eventually talked a bit about her husband and what he's currently up to. "He wants to do a sequel to The Limey, and Terence Stamp wants to do it. Terence and Michael Keaton." Whoa, really?! This is the first time we've ever heard of this. The Limey is one of Soderbergh's greats that he did right before he really broke out with Erin Brockovich, Traffic, and Ocean's Eleven. It's a crime thriller, starring Terence Stamp, about an extremely volatile and dangerous...

Steven Soderbergh and Terence Stamp Looking To Sequelize The Limey
E! workhorse and acclaimed journalist Jules Asner was the guest on the current episode of the Adam Carolla podcast. Amongst discussion of her work, the mysteries of the modeling industry, the unpleasantness of Brooke Burke and lots of other non-/Film business, conversation does eventually come to Steven Soderbergh, Jules' husband. If you drop in at 19 minutes and 30 seconds or so, you can hear the talk on Soderbergh begin with Carolla's attack on Ocean's 13 and Asner's brief defense. Asner then describes The Informant! as one of her favourite pictures Soderbergh has made alongside Ocean's 11 and 12 and The Limey. After Carolla agrees that The Limey was a corker, conversation turns to the potential sequel. Here's the key quote from Jules Asner herself: He wants to do a sequel to The Limey, and Terence Stamp wants to do it. Terence and Michael Keaton. Yep, Michael Keaton. I think that's new news,...

Hollywood Stars Turn Into Fiction In Model's New Mystery Novel
Angelina Jolie
Jennifer Aniston, Angelina Jolie and Drew Barrymore are among a long list of celebrities living fictional lives in a new mystery novel by director Steven Soderbergh's wife Jules Asner.

Asner, a former model and TV correspondent, has created a parallel universe in her upcoming tome entitled Whacked - which follows a fictional character as she seeks revenge on a cheating boyfriend and mingles with real-life stars.

Her characters make controversial observations about Barrymore, who is "about to expire like spoiled milk" and Angelina Jolie: "God doesn't really make size-zero women with size-36C bustlines, right?"

Asner insists she didn't ask stars' permission to include them in the book - and isn't worried about a backlash.

She tells the New York Daily News, "I didn't ask permission. Maybe I should have! I know Ryan (Seacrest) - I don't think he'd be bothered. And Jen (Aniston) is the sweetest, nicest person in the world. I'd only mention her in a great capacity."...

Soderbergh's Wife Hits Out at Divorce Rumors
The wife of Ocean's Eleven director Steven Soderbergh has dismissed reports her three year marriage to the film-maker is over as "not true." Jules Asner has rubbished a story on the website of her former E! Entertainment Television colleague Ted Casablanca, which said the pair are on the verge of splitting. Asner insists she and Soderbergh are still "very happy" together. Casablanca has since issued an apology and retracted the story. Asner, a former Elite model, and Soderbergh started dating in 2001 and were married in May 2003.

Cynthia Garrett, Jules Asner, Kimora Lee Simmons, and Lynne Koplitz in Life & Style (2004)
'Croce' said moving out; 'Life' is short
Cynthia Garrett, Jules Asner, Kimora Lee Simmons, and Lynne Koplitz in Life & Style (2004)
It looks like a couple of freshman syndicated shows won't be back in the fall. Sources said that Sony Pictures Television's talk show Life & Style and reality/talk show Pat Croce: Moving In won't be returning for a second season. Production has already wrapped on both first-run strips, sources said. It's likely that a mix of original episodes and repeats of both shows will continue to air through September. SPT declined comment Monday. Life and Pat Croce have had little traction since their September debuts. Season to date, Life is averaging a 0.5 household rating, and Pat Croce is averaging a 0.7. Life is hosted by Jules Asner, Cynthia Garrett, Lynne Koplitz and Kimora Lee Simmons, and Pat Croce features the motivational speaker and former president and owner of the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers "moving in" with families to help them deal with life issues and problems. The news follows on the heels of another freshman show's demise: NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution's talker The Jane Pauley Show, which is ending production by mid-April.

Jules Asner
"Life & Style," a new syndicated one-hour daytime strip from Sony Pictures Television, is being geared aggressively to women viewers for its planned fall 2004 launch. The show will feature TV and fashion personalities Jules Asner, Cynthia Garrett, Lynne Koplitz and Kimora Lee Simmons as co-hosts. Russ Krasnoff, president of programming and production at SPT, said the strip will look to identify trends and "the hottest topics in pop culture, relationships, fashion and celebrity news as well as telling compelling, edgy stories about important issues from a modern, honest point of view."...

E! host Asner to exit cable net
Jules Asner
NEW YORK -- E! Entertainment will part ways with Revealed host Jules Asner, who is in preliminary discussions with Sony Pictures Television about on-air opportunities in syndication, sources said. "Jules and the network have amicably decided to part ways later this month to enable her to pursue other opportunities," the cable network said in a statement. "She was a valued member of E!'s team for over five years, and we wish her all the best in the years to come both personally and professionally." Asner has served in numerous roles for the cable network since joining E! in 1997, when she started as a correspondent for E! News Daily. After a stint as a host of E!'s Wild On, she was promoted to co-anchor of Daily (since renamed E! News Live), a position she held until moving to New York in November. She has continued as host of Revealed in addition to filing reports from the red carpets of various awards programs. Asner, who married longtime boyfriend Steven Soderbergh this past weekend, has met with Sony about hosting a syndicated vehicle, but no specific projects are being developed yet.
