Syfy and mockbuster producers The Asylum are back with yet another blockbuster movie cash-in with Monster Island, their take on Godzilla: King of the Monsters… only Without Godzilla to save the day! In the future, 98% of the Earth is covered by water and the only land is controlled by a warlord and his army of sharks. Following the showing of Empire of the Sharks at Horror-on-Sea I got a chance to talk with actor Jack Armstrong about how he got involved in the film, what attracted him to the role and what it was like working on the set of the film.

It went really well, it was good to see it on the big screen for the first time. I have seen it once or twice before, but to see it with the directors and the people who made it so special is the right way to see it I would say.

Well it had to happen didn’t it? We’ve had sharks of every kind from The Asylum and the Syfy channel: Zombie Sharks, Ghost Sharks, Swamp Sharks, Ice Sharks… Now we have and Entire Planet of sharks!

In the near future, glacial melting has covered 98% of earth’s landmass. Sharks have flourished, eating all underwater life.They now dominate the planet, operating as one massive school led by a terrifyingly greedy mutated alpha-shark. The only human survivors live in terror of the predators, and it s up to them and them alone, to take down the gigantic leader shark and make the seas safe again.

Well, well. What a surprise Planet of the Sharks turned out to be.

Mickey Rourke is a great actor, but he hasn’t really done anything that memorable since his Oscar-nominated role in The Wrestler. It’d be great to see him take on another great film and maybe this next project will be it.

Rourke will star in a supernatural thriller called Unhinged and will play a character named Dr. Elder, “a prominent psychiatrist at a state-run hospital who wrestles with madness and a dark supernatural force as he races to stop an escaped patient from butchering five people held hostage in a remote house.”

That actually sounds like it could be a great and intense horror film, and it seems like a role that Rourke could slip right into. This wouldn’t be Rourke first horror film. In 1987 he starred in the movie Angel Heart, which you should watch if you haven’t seen it yet!

What makes distributors think that joe public will grab any Vinnie Jones movie off the supermarket shelf sight unseen? The man isn’t exactly the bastion of quality direct to market movies these days (have you seen the godawful Kill Kane?) A few story details and a low resolution concept poster are available for Mark Atkins' film, Awaken. Atkins is a cinematographer and director, who is no stranger to horror (Knight of the Dead). His latest deals with an urban legend, the harvesting of human organs. And, the early graphic shows a hunter and an isolated island. As well, fans of film will recognize several of the film's stars, including: Edward Furlong, Daryl Hannah, Vinnie Jones, Jason London and veteran actor Michael Paré. Story details are relegated to a few sentences. However, several strangers find themselves on an uninhabited island. Here, hunters track these people, hoping to score a kidney, a liver and even a heart. These organs will make a killing on the black market! This title moved into post-production earlier this year. So, a trailer is likely to come this way shortly. As well, 7Heaven Productions and Archstone Pictures are producing this title.

Later this month knights will do battle with the undead, and we can guarantee you that more than mere flesh wounds will be handed out on their quest to protect the Holy Grail. Knight of the Dead is the name of this latest zombie flick, and you'll find full release details right here!

The Asylum is the studio behind such cheap rip-offs as "Transmorphers" and "Snakes on a Train." It's now back with "Jack the Giant Killer," which is a rip-off of Bryan Singer's upcoming "Jack the Giant Slayer." And today we have a trailer for the new movie, showing that it also borrows from Guillermo Del Toro's "Pacific Rim." Check it out below. Plot: A giant beanstalk brings Jack to a land in the clouds filled with snarling, evil beasts. When the creatures make their way to Earth, Jack must figure out how to get back down before they destroy his hometown and everyone in it. "Jack the Giant Killer" is directed by Mark Atkins (Sand Sharks), and stars Jane March (Color of Night) and Ben Cross (Chariots of Fire). It's set to be released on VOD and DVD/Blu-ray on March 12th, just eleven days after Singer's "Jack the Giant Slayer" hits theaters.

The Asylum’s Jack the Giant Killer likely won’t prompt legal action from Bryan Singer’s similarly titled blockbuster since it appears to be set in the early 20th century, the giants are dinosaur-like monsters, and I’m unaware of any version of “Jack & the Beanstalk” that includes a giant robot.

Jane March (Color of Night), Ben Cross (Chariots of Fire), and newcomer Jamie Atkins star in writer-director Mark Atkins’ (Sand Sharks) Jack the Giant Killer, coming to VOD/DVD/Blu-ray on March 12th. That’s 11 days after Jack the Giant Slayer beanstalks theaters worldwide.

So how is The Asylum version of this classic fairy tale different?

Horror film mavens and genre enthusiasts will find no safe haven at Comic-Con International 2012, as independent production and distribution studio The Asylum announced today that they will be joining their fellow fanboys at this year’s San Diego convention. In celebration of their 15th anniversary, The Asylum will be bringing in talent from some of the studio’s most popular action, fantasy, thriller and monster movies for signings, including scream queen Lynn Lowry; Zombie Apocalypse stars Lilan Bowden and Johnny Pacar; and the twisted minds behind The Asylum: David Michael Latt, David Rimawi, and Paul Bales.

Phase 4 Films will be releasing 'Sand Sharks' into the open seas of the North American DVD market on 31 July. The low budget horror comedy from director Mark Atkins features Corin Nemec, Gina Holden ('Saw 3D'), Eric Scott Woods, Vanessa Lee Evigan and Julie Berman along with stocky hottie Brooke Hogan (below). Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water... Who needs water when a prehistoric species of sand-swimming sharks begins prowling the beach? Sand Sharks is poised to be the schlockbuster of the summer.

Corin Nemec (Mansquito) and Brooke Hogan (2-Headed Shark Attack) star in Mark Atkins’ horror comedy Sand Sharks, a movie that has “Syfy original movie” written all over it yet looks to be bypassing that channel altogether. When you get a movie to review called Sand Sharks you can already guess what is coming.
