The 10 Most Underrated '80s Horror Movies You Need To Watch
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

There may be no other decade more directly associated with classic horror in the general public consciousness than the 1980s. This is the decade of the slasher genre-shaping "Friday the 13th," of Freddy Krueger famously saving New Line Cinema with "A Nightmare on Elm Street," of Sam Raimi blowing open the doors of independent filmmaking with "The Evil Dead," and of dead-on-arrival bombs turned cult classics like John Carpenter's "The Thing."

The corruption of the Ronald Reagan presidency, if nothing else, proved to be fertile ground for the horror genre's dread and bloodshed. But as always, not all films are created equal — and neither is the public's reception to them. The '80s are chock-full of unseen or under-appreciated gems that stand up to the canonized classics of the era, from disregarded franchise sequels to overlooked ventures from American and international genre masters.

Creepshow (1982) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
It’s so very hard to consider any movie perfect. Looking at rankings like IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, or other cinema scores, you will be hard pressed to find a consistent 10/10 or perfect score on something. Go deeper and it’s damn near impossible to unite a fanbase into something or find something genre specific to align in the right ways for it to become a universal classic. The Shawshank Redemption, Goodfellas, The Lion King, and a handful of others can be used as examples, but what about horror? Horror is nearly as divisive as the Marvel or Star Wars fan base with even more options to choose from when you break down the various subgenres. For me, anthology films will always hold a special spot, and I have always sought them out. The problem with many of them is that they range from undercooked to flawed but fun. It would...

Mel Gibson's Iconic 80% Rotten Tomatoes Buddy Comedy Just Found a Free Streaming Home
Image
Get ready to revisit one of the most legendary duos in action movie history – without spending a dime. Lethal Weapon, the 1987 buddy-cop classic, and its three sequels that helped redefine the genre and launched a billion imitators, are heading to Pluto TV this July. With its 80% Rotten Tomatoes score, explosive action, and endlessly quotable banter between Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, it’s exactly the kind of comfort movie that’s somehow still better than most of what’s in theaters today. And obviously, it still slaps. The movie is the blueprint for how to do a buddy-cop movie.

You know the setup: Two wildly mismatched cops are forced to work together. One’s a loose cannon (Gibson’s Martin Riggs), the other is days from retirement (Glover’s Roger Murtaugh). What could go wrong? Everything, obviously. But in the hands of director Richard Donner and a then-unknown screenwriter named Shane Black,...

‘Lethal Weapon’ 4K Uhd Review
Image
Stars: Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Mitchell Ryan, Tom Atkins, Darlene Love | Written by Shane Black, Jeffrey Boam | Directed by Richard Donner

Nearly four decades after its explosive debut, Lethal Weapon remains one of the defining films of the action genre. Now, with Warner Bros.’ new 4K Uhd release, Richard Donner’s 1987 classic gets the restoration it has long deserved, reaffirming its place in the pantheon of buddy-cop cinema.

The film that kicked off the enduring franchise stars Mel Gibson as Martin Riggs, a volatile, grief-stricken former Special Forces soldier-turned-lapd detective teetering on the edge of self-destruction. Opposite him is Danny Glover’s Roger Murtaugh, the seasoned, sensible family man counting down the days to retirement. What follows is a masterclass in chemistry, conflict, and camaraderie — a mismatched duo navigating drug cartels, conspiracies, and car chases while redefining the buddy-cop formula.

Presented in both its original 1987 theatrical cut and...

Horror Highlights: That Very Witch, Horror In Haddonfield, Surviving LA Llorona
Image
That Very Witch: Fear, Feminism, and the American Witch Movie: "Researched over the course of seven years, That Very Witch: Fear, Feminism, and the American Witch Movie explores the cyclical rise and fall of the cinematic witch in American culture and her relationship to feminist movements over time.

Through historical analysis and dozens of case studies, Payton McCarty-Simas analyzes how the witch came to be understood as the ultimate cultural bogeywoman on the one hand and a classic feminist symbol of empowerment on the other.

It traces the representation of “demonic women” in the past decade back to older horror cycles and through the “New Age” section of your local bookstore, investigating the (counter)cultural shifts along the way.

The book is a deep dive that demonstrates how changes in cinematic portrayals of the witch over time reflect major shifts in how feminism is perceived politically and interpreted culturally in America.

'Lethal Weapon' Stars Mel Gibson & Danny Glover Reunite
Image
Action fans, get ready to barely contain your glee, as Lethal Weapon stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover have reunited amid talk of a fifth outing in the beloved buddy cop franchise. The pair, who have teamed up as LAPD detectives Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh across all four Lethal Weapon movies from 1987 to 1998, took to the stage together at the recent MegaCon fan convention in Orlando. And it’s a reunion that will no doubt have action fans even more excited for Lethal Weapon 5 than they already were.

Gibson had his own panel at the event, during which the Oscar-winning filmmaker (and now controversial figure) discussed some of his biggest roles, as well as revealed the big roles his turned down (via People), including James Bond and Gladiator lead Maximus Decimus Meridius, a role ultimately played by Gibson’s fellow Australian actor Russell Crowe.

Escape from New York (1981) Revisited – Sci-fi Action Movie Review
Image
We’ve discussed John Carpenter on this channel as much or more than nearly any other director. Some of his movies, like The Thing, have gotten a different type of show appreciation via discussions on its behind the scenes in a Wtf, a comparison with its novella source material, and a look at what its legacy is in a Deconstructing video, amongst a few others. Looking at his catalogue, there is a wealth of stuff that is firmly in the horror realm from Christine to In the Mouth of Madness, Prince of Darkness to Halloween. While he has some movies that are outside that wheelhouse like the western homage Assault on Precinct 13 or Academy Award winning sci-fi drama Starman, Escape from New York is something special. In addition to being one of my favorite films of all time, full stop, it’s also sneaky in its ability to horrify. While...

'Very, Very Cringeworthy': Mel Gibson's Lethal Weapon Marksmanship Criticized by Gun Experts 37 Years Later
Image
A former United States Army Special Operations soldier calls Mel Gibson's Lethal Weapon movie performance "very, very cringeworthy."

In an interview posted to YouTube by Insider, retired U.S. Army soldier Patrick McNamara breaks down and ranks various firearms scenes from different films, including a shooting range sequence from 1987's Lethal Weapon. Discussing Mel Gibson's handling of his weapon in the scene as LAPD Sergeant Martin Riggs, McNamara said, "Riggs' form is very, very cringeworthy. He’s slapping the heck out of the trigger. He’s going a million miles on that trigger, and he’s shutting his eyes at every shot, and his whole body is flinching with every single shot. It’s not rhythmic. There’s no metronome rhythm there. It’s just ripping rounds into the target. It’s a horrible pistol marksmanship scene."

10 Horror Movies That Deserve A Modern Reboot
Image
Several iconic horror movies from earlier decades just don’t hold up to today’s standards, which often makes them get overlooked by modern audiences. At the time of their release, they might have been groundbreaking, but with their limited technology and simpler storytelling, a lot of them can easily feel outdated nowadays. Additionally, older horror films often relied on implied scares and slow build-ups, which is why they don't really hold the attention of today’s viewers.

Modern audiences want a faster pace, more exciting horrors, and complex characters. Plus, certain themes from old-school movies just don’t click with the way we see the world now. That’s where new adaptations come in. From Re-Animator to Cannibal Holocaust, there are quite a few iconic horror movies that deserve a modern reboot. If done right, these titles could get a fresh spin while honoring the originals' legacy, giving them...

“Maniac Cop”
Development continues on a live action, supernatural crime TV series, based on the feature "Maniac Cop" (1988), to be produced and directed by Nicolas Winding Refn and John Hyams, for HBO in North America and Canal+ in France:

The first "Maniac Cop" feature, directed by William Lustig, starred Tom Atkins, Bruce Campbell, Laurene Landon, Richard Roundtree, William Smith, Robert Z'Dar, and Sheree North, following an ex-police officer, who returns from the dead, seeking revenge on criminals, corrupt politicians and co-workers who wronged him.

"Maniac Cop" was followed by the feature sequels, "Maniac Cop 2" (1990) and "Maniac Cop III: Badge of Silence".

"We've been talking about a re-imagining of the 'Maniac Cop' films for a number of years," said Refn, "but as we continued to work on the material, we found ourselves wanting to explore the world we were creating in greater depth.

"Turning 'Maniac Cop' into a...

2005's Terrible Remake of The Fog is a Streaming Horror Hit on Tubi
Image
The 2005 remake of The Fog has had viewers rolling in since its arrival on Tubi, but even as a free to stream offering, the Rupert Wainwright directed remake of John Carpenters far superior 1980 movie is still a chore to get through. Every horror movie goes through the same rinse and repeat cycle every 20-30 years even some of the best movies of the 1980s were remakes of films from the 50s and 60s but trying to recapture the eerie atmosphere of Carpenters movie was a stretch too far, with the remake becoming one of the worst movie remakes ever.

While free to stream movies are always able to find someone to watch them, there have been many long-forgotten films making a big splash on platforms like Tubi, Freevee, and Pluto TV. Whether these movies were originally forgotten for a good reason is open to interpretation, but it seems that, despite...

Bruce Campbell reflects on Maniac Cop and his death in the sequel
Image
One lesser known but extremely cool horror series that’s worth revisiting is the Maniac Cop franchise. Directed by William Lustig and scripted by Larry Cohen, the Maniac Cop trilogy got off to a great start in 1988 with a film that stars Tom Atkins, Richard Roundtree, William Smith, Laurene Landon, and Evil Dead franchise hero Bruce Campbell, with Robert Z’Dar as the title character. Although Campbell emerges as the hero in the first film, he’s killed off early in 1990’s Maniac Cop 2 – which, despite losing Campbell so quickly, still manages to be one of the best horror sequels out there. Things don’t get questionable until 1993’s troubled Maniac Cop 3. But even though the first two movies are awesome, Campbell doesn’t seem to have the fondest memories of them, as he revealed during a recent interview with Variety.

Variety gathered lines from several of the movies...

This 44-Year-Old Horror Film Set a Major Scream Queen Record
Image
In 1980, acclaimed horror director John Carpenter brought together two of the genre's biggest "Scream Queens" in one motion picture, The Fog. Shot on a limited budget in anamorphic widescreen to make the film feel much bigger than it actually was, the grandiose nature of this movie was further helped by being just one of two films to feature the mother-daughter pairing of Jamie Lee Curtis and her mom, Janet Leigh.

For those who might not be aware, "Scream Queen" is a term used to describe the generic "damsel-in-distress" type characters that populated the horror genre for so very long. While actresses like Fay Wray (King Kong) and Anne Gwynne (House of Frankenstein) are typically considered the progenitors of the trope, actress Janet Leigh became the most famous "Scream Queen" in the 1960s and would later share that title with her daughter, Jamie Lee Curtis, who rose to similar prominence in...

10 Action Movies From The 1980s That Are Loads Of Fun
Image
The 1980s produced tons of great action movies, many of which have never been beaten in terms of sheer entertainment value. Big-budget blockbusters from the 1980s have a unique appeal. Years before overabundant CGI, long-running megafranchises and endless reboots took some of the sheen off of multiplex popcorn movies, the 1980s were a great decade for original stories with tons of crowdpleasing action.

It's no coincidence that some of the biggest action franchises of all time can trace their roots back to the 1980s, like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon and Indiana Jones. These types of movies all combined fun ideas with charismatic movie stars. Most importantly, they also delivered the kind of hair-raising action that can still evoke a visceral response in audiences several decades later.

10 Biggest Halloween Movie Flops Of All Time
Image
The Halloween season is a big time for filmmaking, as horror and autumnal-themed movies often perform well at the box office during these few months. However, films set during Halloween or that use the visual language often seen in these projects can also be considered part of the Halloween canon. Unfortunately, just because a movie is released during this time or using these popular motifs doesn't mean it's going to do well in theaters. Plenty of legendary movie directors have made box office bombs, as there's a variety of reasons why films don't connect with audiences in theaters.

Many of the most underrated Halloween movies underperformed at the box office. However, they later found cult followings thanks to critical and audience reevaluation. Part of the reason streaming is so popular is that it has allowed contemporary audiences to revisit works that weren't given enough attention when they were released. However,...

Richard Roundtree's 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
The best Richard Roundtree movies and TV shows feature some of the classic exploitation films of the 1970s and some great television shows of the 2000s. Roundtree was born in 1942 in New York and started his acting career after dropping out of college in 1963. He worked as a model while also starring in some theater plays before he finally got his break in a 1970 hidden-camera reality movie called What Do You Say to a Naked Lady. However, his next role made him an icon.

In 1971, Richard Roundtree took on the role of private detective John Shaft in the exploitation crime thriller Shaft. This created a new franchise, and Roundtree became the face of the new strong Black Hollywood action hero, creating a new genre in which future action heroes patterned themselves after his iconic role. However, he refused to be pigeonholed only into that role and still worked in everything...

Kurt Russell Had To Beat Out A Long List Of Hollywood Legends To Star In The Thing
Image
If there's one thing we know about the alien known only as The Thing, it's that it can appear as just about any living being that it wants to. In that spirit, it's no big surprise that the role of R.J. MacReady, the resident helicopter pilot of Outpost 31, was one that could've gone to any number of actors when director John Carpenter was developing "The Thing" at Universal Pictures in the early '80s. On the other hand, this fact may come as a surprise to those who hadn't realized other actors were in the running for the part, given that the role eventually went to one of Carpenter's muses: Kurt Russell. The marriage of Russell, Carpenter, and MacReady seems so natural in hindsight that it's wild to think about anyone else playing the part.

Even more surprising is Carpenter's admission that Russell wasn't his first choice for MacReady. There...

Halloween III: Season of the Witch is Streaming Now on Peacock
Image
Halloween III: Season of the Witch is now streaming on Peacock. As the only entry in the Halloween franchise to not feature Michael Myers, the movie has always been the black sheep of the family, but is now able to find a whole new audience and get the reappraisal many believe it deserves.

Released in 1982, Halloween III was panned on its release, and became a box office disaster thanks to a lot of misinterpretations about the original intention of the Halloween franchise. While the first two movies told the complete story of Michael Myers, Laurie Strode, and Dr. Loomis, fans expected that the Halloween name immediately meant the resurrection of these characters. Therefore, they were hugely disappointed to discover that the third installment was a new standalone story that had no connection to John Carpenters original tale.

One of Horror's Most Polarizing Sequels Comes to Peacock Next Month
Image
An underrated Halloween movie is joining Peacock next month. Halloween III: Season of the Witch, the only installment in the franchise to not feature Michael Myers, is set to arrive on the streaming service at the start of September.

Peacock has announced that Halloween III: Season of the Witch will become available to stream on the platform beginning Sept. 1, 2024. Released in 1982, Halloween III does not take place in the same timeline as the first two films and is instead set in its own continuity. The movie follows Dr. Dan Challis (Tom Atkins) as he tries to solve the mysterious murder of a patient in his hospital. Aided by the patient's daughter Ellie (Stacey Nelkin), the pair travel to the small town of Santa Mira, California, where they discover that Silver Shamrock Novelties, a company run by Conal Cochran (Dan O'Herlihy), is attempting to use the mystic powers of the Stonehenge...

‘The Collected’ – Marcus Dunstan Teases New Life for Third Movie
Juan Fernández, Madeline Zima, and Josh Stewart in The Collector (2009)
It’s been a couple years since we’ve heard a peep about The Collected, the planned third installment in the horror trilogy that began with The Collector and continued with The Collection. The hotly anticipated film had briefly entered production before shutting down back in 2020, you may recall, but it sounds like it’s getting a second chance at life here in 2024.

Chatting with YouTube’s David Clair-Bennett, director Marcus Dunstan (The Collector, The Collection, #Amfad: All My Friends Are Dead) offers up an exciting update this week.

Dunstan tells the channel, “After five years of Gordian Knot untangling, The Collector is free. The Collector gets to come back. And it is something that… Josh Stewart… we’re pumped… Emma Fitzpatrick… we’re thrilled. We want to come back and do it right.”

“What are the next steps? Well, really we’re at the nascent stage,” Dunstan continues. “So...

‘Bruiser’ 4K Uhd Review (Indicator)
Image
Stars: Jason Flemyng, Peter Stormare, Leslie Hope, Tom Atkins, Nina Garbiras, Andrew Tarbet, Jonathan Higgins | Written and Directed by George A. Romero

George A. Romero, renowned for his groundbreaking work in the horror genre, particularly his “Living Dead” series, took a distinctive turn with his 2000 film Bruiser. Stepping away from the visceral zombie apocalypse scenarios that cemented his legacy, Romero delved into a psychological thriller that explores themes of identity, revenge, and societal alienation.

Bruiser follows the story of Henry Creedlow, played by Jason Flemyng, a meek advertising executive who is perpetually exploited and humiliated by those around him. His life takes a dramatic turn when he awakens one morning to find that his face has transformed into a blank, featureless mask. This physical manifestation of his lost identity empowers him to exact revenge on those who have wronged him, from his unfaithful wife to his tyrannical boss.

The Collected: long-awaited sequel to The Collector and The Collection is finally coming back together
Image
Back in September of 2019, we reported that The Collected – the third film in the franchise that began with 2009’s The Collector (watch it Here) and continued with 2012’s The Collection (watch that Here) – had started filming in Atlanta. Genre legend Tom Atkins had a role in the film, and he told us that the first thing shot on The Collected was the twelve-page sequence that makes up the ending. Nearly five years later, that’s still all that has been shot for The Collected. Writer/director Marcus Dunstan and co-writer Patrick Melton previously revealed that production was shut down on The Collected after just eight days of filming… but it looks like this project is finally coming back together and moving forward again!

After the production shutdown, Dunstan and Melton stopped hearing from anyone involved behind the scenes. Attempts to get in contact with the producer who held the rights went unanswered.

Mel Gibson Provides Update on Lethal Weapon 5: 'I'm Pretty Happy With It'
Image
Mel Gibson confirms he's taking over directing for Lethal Weapon 5 after Richard Donner's passing in 2021. Donner had a fair amount of the screenplay done, with Jez Butterworth brought on for revisions in 2023. While the film will maintain humor, it will also address serious issues, providing a mix of entertainment and depth.

Its been a long time coming, but Lethal Weapon 5 is still in the works according to star Mel Gibson, who will also be taking over directing duties for the late Richard Donner following his passing in 2021. Beginning in 1987, Lethal Weapon saw Gibson team up with Danny Glover in the buddy-cop movie featuring a pair of mismatched LAPD detectives working to solve the murder of a friend's daughter. The film would go on to earn $120 million at the box office, and spawn an entire franchise that saw three sequels, and a TV show in 2016. A legacy sequel,...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From The Rockford Files
Image
As far as investigators go, Jim Rockford (James Garner) is a bit of a departure from the mostly-polished (Columbo excepted) detectives of television's first decade. A slouchily dressed detective who lived in a trailer and served time in San Quentin, Rockford was cool — if not always collected. "The Rockford Files" ran for six seasons on NBC beginning in 1974 and was later resurrected for a series of '90s TV movies. In that time, audiences were introduced not only to Rockford, but to a cast of supporting characters including his truck driver dad Rocky (Noah Beery Jr.), LAPD pal Becker (Joe Santos), and the con artist Angel (Stuart Margolin).

Garner passed away in 2014, and only a few "Rockford Files" castmates are still with us today. Those who are still around include notable recurring guest stars like famously mustachioed "Blue Bloods" star Tom Selleck, Egot-winning multi-hyphenate Rita Moreno, and "Happy Gilmore" director...

Top 10 Crossover Horror Movie Easter Eggs!
Devon Sawa, Ali Larter, Seann William Scott, Kerr Smith, Amanda Detmer, and Chad Donella in Final Destination (2000)
As Easter Sunday approaches this weekend, we thought we’d “die” your eggs a little a differently. That is, we’re on the great hidden treasure hunt for some of the most colorful and delicious horror movie Easter eggs found in some of our favorite titles. But here’s the thing. We aren’t talking about obscure cameos from people that are hard to miss, or even secretive foreshadowing within a single movie, a la the entire Final Destination franchise. Nor are we talking about mere verbal references to other horror movies. Rather, we’re interested in visual crossover clues found one horror movie that pay homage to another, found tucked away in the background or even hidden in plain sight. You see the distinction. Good. Hopefully you haven’t already seen what’s to follow. Happy holiday y’all, here’s our Top 10 Favorite Crossover Horror Movie Easter Eggs!

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Escape From New York
Image
John Carpenter's "Escape From New York" is a cult classic for a reason — it rules. Released in 1981, "Escape From New York" is a down-and-dirty sci-fi action pic in which New York City has become a giant maximum security prison. As bad luck would have it, an attempted hijacking of Air Force One forces the President (Donald Pleasence) to eject from the plane in an escape pod. Guess where he ends up? Yep — NYC, baby! The Big Apple! The militarized government wants to save the President and retrieve a top-secret briefcase he has cuffed to his wrist, but New York is too dangerous to simply enter for your average rescue mission. So the powers-that-be strike upon a simple plan: they force criminal Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) into doing the job.

Snake, a cool dude with an eyepatch and a whispery voice, has no real choice in the matter: a device...
