Catherine de Medici's story has ended on Starz. The cable channel has cancelled The Serpent Queen, so there won't be a third season. However, there is talk of a spin-off series starring Minnie Driver.

A period drama series, The Serpent Queen TV show stars Samantha Morton, Amrita Acharia, Enzo Cilenti, Barry Atsma, Nicholas Burns, Danny Kirrane, Sennia Nanua, Beth Goddard, Antonia Clarke, and George Jaques. ‘The Serpent Queen’ Canceled After Season 2, Queen Elizabeth Spinoff in the Works at Starz
Image
“The Serpent Queen” has been canceled after Season 2 at Starz.

A spinoff series focused on Queen Elizabeth The First is currently in development at the network as it looks to continue its partnership with “The Serpent Queen” executive producers Erwin Stoff and Justin Haythe.

The 1500s-set series starred Samantha Morton as Catherine de’ Medici, the Queen of France, as she navigates political challenges as a teenager in order to seize control and rule the country for 30 years.

While no casting for the Queen Elizabeth spinoff has been revealed, Minnie Driver guest starred as the British Monarch in Season 2 of “The Serpent Queen.”

Based on the book “Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France” by Leonie Frieda, “The Serpent Queen” also starred Amrita Acharia, Barry Atsma, Enzo Cilenti, Sennia Nanua and Kiruna Stamell. The series used fourth-wall breaks and contemporary music to modernize the Renaissance-era story. The second season of the show,...

‘The Serpent Queen’ Canceled; Starz In Talks For Queen Elizabeth I Spinoff Starring Minnie Driver
Image
Exclusive: Starz is not proceeding with a third season of The Serpent Queen, starring Samantha Morton as Catherine de Medici. But it’s not all bad news for the cast of the historic drama series: I hear their options had been picked up so the actors will be paid for the unproduced Season 3 episodes.

There is also good news for the loyal fans of The Serpent Queen — a spinoff centering on Queen Elizabeth The First is in the works from the same creative team of writer/executive producer Justin Haythe and executive producer Erwin Stoff, sources said. No talent is currently attached, but Minnie Driver guest starred as the British Queen in Season 2 of Serpent Queen and is expected to reprise her role, I hear.

The cancellation decision comes a little over a month after Season 2 of The Serpent Queen ended its run on Starz. Both seasons have been well received,...

Minnie Driver Says She Would 'Love' to Star in a Queen Elizabeth Series
Image
Minnie Driver steals the show as Queen Elizabeth I in the second season of The Serpent Queen, sparking talk of a potential spin-off series, which she would love. Season 2 delves into Catherine de Medici's relationship with her children, introducing conflict and drama alongside Driver's portrayal of Elizabeth I. Expect intense queen-on-queen drama with the emergence of a third powerful female character, played by Isobel Jesper Jones, threatening Catherine's rule.

Oscar-nominated muse Samantha Morton returns as Catherine de Medici in Starzs wickedly fun second season of The Serpent Queen. But keep your eyes on Minnie Driver this season, who winds up being the ultimate scene-stealer as Elizabeth I of England. She's so excellent in the role, and enjoyed it so much, that the idea of a stand-alone series or some kind of spin-off is already being discussed. I can't even tell you how much I would love it," Driver told MovieWeb,...

The Serpent Queen: Liv Hill on Catherine's Shocking Decision
Image
From writer and executive producer Justin Haythe and director and executive producer Stacie Passon (based on the book Catherine de Medici: Renaissance Queen of France by Leonie Frieda), Starz's latest period drama The Serpent Queen tells the story of one of history's most complex and complicated figures, Catherine de Medici, who ascends in power and status to become one of France's longest-serving rulers. As an orphan, Catherine (Liv Hill) marries into the French court at a young age, but quickly learns that she must counter — and in some instances, outmaneuver — her political opponents, many of whom would rather see her dead than on the throne. What makes the series even more intriguing is that it's Catherine herself (Samantha Morton) telling her own story, in her own words, to her newest maid and confidant Rahima (Sennia Nanua). The upcoming series also stars Colm Meaney, Ludivine Sagnier, Kiruna Stamell, Barry Atsma,...

France Lures Back Big American Shoots as Pandemic Slows Down Locally (Exclusive)
Image
Despite current travel restrictions, a flurry of high-profile U.S. films and series are set to shoot in France, including Lionsgate’s “John Wick: Chapter 4” and Netflix’s “The Gray Man.” Starz mini-series “The Serpent Queen,” meanwhile, has been shooting in southern France since April.

Paris hadn’t hosted any big American shoots for over a year as France struggled to ride out the various waves of the pandemic. The country finally emerged from a lengthy lockdown, lifting most restrictions as Covid-19 cases began dropping and more of the population received vaccinations. A 9 p.m. curfew is still in place but doesn’t apply to film productions, which are allowed to film at night with a certificate.

“John Wick: Chapter 4,” directly by Chad Stahelski, will soon begin filming in France. Keanu Reeves, who headlines the action-packed franchise and plays a retired hitman seeking vengeance, is now in France...

Palm Springs International Ff 2019: ‘The Resistance Banker’
An Interview with director Joram Lürsen of ‘The Resistance Banker‘/ ‘Bankier van het Verzet’

Slowly music and water segue into men filing into a conference room to hear a story they know nothing about. Water, the national symbol of Holland, a land forever waging a strategic battle with water, plays a thematic role in this film that only at the end becomes clear in its meaning of kinship and brotherhood.

Coming from an aristocratic Dutch banking family, brothers Walraven and Gijs van Hall risk their families and futures to slow the Nazi war machine by creating an underground bank to fund the Dutch resistance in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. Actually they rob the Dutch National Bank, something that to this day is not discussed as such although the heroism of the men has finally been acknowledged.

‘Resistance Banker’ Director Depicts Secret Hero Behind ‘Biggest Bank Robbery in Dutch History’
As an up-and-coming filmmaker, Jarom Lürsen never wanted to make a World War II movie. A preponderance of those stories have already been told, after all. But when a monument was made for someone no one really knew about in his home country of the Netherlands, Lürsen found himself drawn to the little-known tale.

“He was a hero that was always hidden,” Lürsen told TheWrap’s Steve Pond at a Q&A on Tuesday following a screening of his film “The Resistance Banker,” the Netherlands entry in the Oscar foreign film race and this year’s winner of four Golden Calves — the equivalent of the Oscars in the Netherlands — including best film and best actor.
