With 99 submissions, this year's Best Comedy Directing category at the Emmys will have six finalists when the nominations are announced July 15.

Similar to the drama category, the comedy directing ballot has a mix of shows that took different approaches to their entries. While some played it smart (see: Hacks and The Studio) submitting one memorable episode that will be a sure-thing to make the final field, others opted for three entries, with Shrinking going up to four. In those cases, overload and potential vote-splitting make it harder to discern which episode entry will make it into the lineup of six — technically five, since one spot is reserved for a multicamera show. Jamie Babbit marked her feature directorial debut with the project that stars Natasha Lyonne as Megan, a high school cheerleader sent to conversion-therapy camp when her loved ones suspect that she’s a lesbian.

The filmmaker hatched the idea after reading an article about gay rehabilitation centers and recruited Brian Wayne Peterson to write the script. Babbit cast Clea Duvall (who starred in her short film Sleeping Beauties) as Megan’s love interest. Rosario Dawson was among those considered for the lead, but the part went to Lyonne, who led 1998’s Slums of Beverly Hills and asked about Cheerleader after seeing the script in friend Duvall’s car. The Hollywood Creative Alliance has announced their nominees for the 2025 Astra TV Awards, scheduled to take place on June 10 in Los Angeles.

Apple TV+'s comedy The Studio, a satire about the inner workings of Hollywood, topped the nominations list with 14 bids. The series is up for Best Comedy, with individual acting nominations for Seth Rogen (Best Comedy Actor), Ike Barinholtz (Best Comedy Supporting Actor), and dual Best Comedy Supporting Actress nods for Catherine O’Hara and Chase Sui Wonders.

In the drama categories, Apple TV+'s Severance and HBO's The Last of Us led the way with 13 nominations each. Both shows are recognized in multiple acting categories and are competing for Best Drama Series.

Other major contenders include The White Lotus and Ghosts, each earning 11 nominations, followed by Abbott Elementary, Hacks, and Only Murders in the Building with 10 nods each.

Martin's personal blog, the acclaimed author discussed the cancelation of Prime Video's historical-fantasy series, My Lady Jane, which reimagined the story of Lady Jane Grey, the Nine Day Queen of England. "Speaking of television shows, I have always loved alternate history and Jane Grey, Englands nine-days queen, has always fascinated me," Martin wrote. "Small wonder, then, that I really enjoyed My Lady Jane, a clever and original historical fantasy on Amazon Prime, set in an England full of witches and shapechangers, where Jane lasts more than nine days."

Amazon Prime Video has cancelled the historical fantasy series “My Lady Jane” after its first season failed to attract enough viewers. The show, which premiered June 27 with all eight episodes released at once, told a revisionist tale of Lady Jane Grey, England’s queen for nine days in 1553.

Based on the young adult novels by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows, “My Lady Jane” blended elements of different genres to retell the traditional historical narrative from a new perspective. It featured humans called Ethians who could transform into animals and placed Lady Jane in a leading role as she sought to control her own destiny.

Despite an ensemble cast led by Emily Bader as Lady Jane Grey and Edward Bluemel as Lord Guildford Dudley, and production from experienced talent like Jamie Babbit and executive producers Gemma Burgess and Meredith Glynn, the show failed to break into Nielsen’s top ten streaming rankings.

Prime Video will be pulling the plug on My Lady Jane. The decision comes a matter of weeks after all episodes debuted simultaneously on the streaming platform.

Per Deadline, My Lady Jane has been officially canceled by Prime Video after one season. The first season of the series, which consisted of eight episodes, dropped on June 27. Since its release, the new show also drew high acclaim, landing with an approval rating of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes. The high score helped make My Lady Jane one of the year's best-reviewed new shows.

Amazon’s Prime Video has canceled the period drama, which combined romance and alternate-world fantasy. The cancellation comes about seven weeks after Prime Video released all eight episodes of the show’s first (and now only) season.

My Lady Jane, based on a novel by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows, is set in a 16th century England where humans co-exist with shape-shifters who can take the form of either people or animals. Jane Grey (Emily Bader) is an ordinary human, known as a Verity, who becomes sympathetic to the oppressed shape-shifters, known as Ethians — which will become a problem for the ruling class as Jane rises to power.

Edward Bluemel, Rob Brydon, Dominic Cooper, Anna Chancellor, Jordan Peters, Kate O’Flynn, Henry Ashton, Jim Broadbent and Ollie Chris (who narrates) star alongside Bader.

The news is not entirely surprising. Creatively, My Lady Jane has done well. Despite taking a very big swing with a premise that crosses genres that don’t normally co-exist — historical romance, fantasy, adventure, comedy and farce — it has been among the best reviewed new series this year. Cory Michael Smith, Michael Dorman, and Miles Marthaller will all star in the pilot alongside previously announced lead Tatiana Maslany.

It’s probably fair to say that every single drama about the Tudor dynasty would like you to know it’s not like all those other dramas about the Tudor dynasty. This one is steamier, or more emotionally intimate; that one features nontraditional casting or focuses on a less famous figure. So I’ll say this for Prime Video’s My Lady Jane: This one, really and truly, is not like the others. Sure, there are crowns and pretty ballgowns and cool sword fights and castles; as ever, the plot hinges on noble conspiracies and threats of beheading. The latest to hit the market is My Lady Jane, which comes to Amazon’s Prime Video service next month.

Only Murders In The Building, the Hulu comedy starring Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, could remain on ABC in addition to streaming.

The Hulu original premiered on its sibling linear network earlier this month, coming as the network had a largely unscripted fall slate due to the Hollywood strikes. It remains on the streaming service.

ABC and Hulu boss Craig Erwich, speaking at the TCA press tour, said, “We’re certainly open to doing it with Only Murders again and or other shows. When we look at both ABC and Hulu, it’s one big chessboard, so you’re able to see where certain audiences watch certain shows, some migrate from one platform to another. Exclusive: Plan B Entertainment has started a new micro budget film finance initiative to produce and finance lower cost films which will be led by newly hired Caddy Vanasirikul. The veteran film producer and acquisition and production executive will manage Plan B’s forthcoming slate in this sector.

The first film under this new initiative is Mexican filmmaker Fernando Eimbcke’s Olmo, which recently completed shooting in New Mexico under an interim agreement. Co-written with Vanesa Garnica and directed by Eimbcke, and produced with Erendira Nunez LariosEréndira Núñez Larios and Michel Franco’s Teorema, the bilingual story is about 14 year-old Olmo, who must take care of his bedridden father who has Multiple Sclerosis. ABC is taking up temporary residence at the Arconia.

The network will air the first season of Hulu’s critically adored comedy Only Murders in the Building in January. The season will run in two-hour blocks on Tuesday nights over three weeks starting Jan. 2, with a one-hour slot for the season finale on Jan. 23.

ABC will also move Celebrity Jeopardy! to Tuesday nights for its final episodes of the season, starting with a semifinal on Jan. 2. The game show will air at 8 p.m., followed by Only Murders at 9 p.m. The two-hour blocks on Jan. 2, 9 and 16 will contain three episodes each.

The moves will help ABC fill its schedule ahead of the return of its homegrown scripted series in February. Will Trent, The Rookie and The Good Doctor are set to occupy Tuesdays starting Feb. 20, but the network hadn’t previously announced any programming for the first few weeks...

As “Only Murders in the Building” fans await a fourth season of the hit Hulu comedy, they can relive the antics of the show’s first season via a broadcast run on ABC this January.

As it prepares to start returning new episodes of its strike-delayed series starting in February, the Alphabet net will fill the January gap with episodes of “Only Murders in the Building” on Tuesdays. All ten episodes of the show’s Season 1 will air back-to-back, starting with the first three episodes on Tuesday, Jan. 2.

According to insiders, ABC will follow broadcast standards and practices rules on the episodes, and the network has been working with the show’s producers on edits that need to be made. “A League of Their Own” co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson has reacted to the news that Amazon has scrapped Season 2 due to the ongoing strikes, calling the decision “bullshit and cowardly.”

On Friday, Variety confirmed that the series — based on the 1992 baseball film of the same name — would no longer be going forward with its shortened final season, which was greenlit in April. According to sources, the cancellation came about due to the writers and actors strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

In an Instagram post over the weekend, Jacobson wrote: “What luck I have had to get to tell these stories and play this character I love so much. What a rare thing in life. And so I am sad today. Exclusive: Prime Video is not moving forward with the previously ordered second — and final — season of comedy-drama A League Of Their Own, co-created and starring Abbi Jacobson, Deadline has learned.

It joins fellow Prime Video/Amazon Studios hourlong freshman series The Peripheral, which also had its Season 2 renewal reversed.

As Deadline reported earlier today, both cancellations are believed to stem from the length of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which have delayed TV production, creating large gaps between seasons and making shows miss their target release dates.

In a story earlier this week, Deadline reported that there may be more series whose renewals could be rescinded or pending pickups not happen if the work stoppage stretches past Labor Day, with freshman series going into Season 2 the most vulnerable. There was a similar string of unrenewals during the pandemic.

In 1999, before blowing up in the realm of TV with the likes of Orange is the New Black, Russian Doll, and this year’s Poker Face, Lyonne played Megan Bloomfield, the lead role in Jamie Babbit’s But I’m a Cheerleader, a film about a high school cheerleading superstar who’s sent away to a conversion therapy camp to cure her suspected lesbianism.

Back in 1999, years before Poker Face and Russian Doll, Natasha Lyonne starred as Megan Bloomfield in Jamie Babbit's cult classic But I'm a Cheerleader. The film follows Megan, a popular high school cheerleader who struggles with her feelings towards her boyfriend. Megan's parents suspect their daughter may be a lesbian, so they opt to send her away to conversion therapy. Once there, Megan befriends Graham Eaton (Clea DuVall) and the two eventually fall in love. In a nod to David Fincher’s “Fight Club,” “Bottoms” follows two queer teen girls who start a fight club with a plan to lose their virginities to cheerleaders.
