With 99 submissions, this year's Best Comedy Directing category at the Emmys will have six finalists when the nominations are announced July 15.
Similar to the drama category, the comedy directing ballot has a mix of shows that took different approaches to their entries. While some played it smart (see: Hacks and The Studio) submitting one memorable episode that will be a sure-thing to make the final field, others opted for three entries, with Shrinking going up to four. In those cases, overload and potential vote-splitting make it harder to discern which episode entry will make it into the lineup of six — technically five, since one spot is reserved for a multicamera show. (More on that below.)
As mentioned, Hacks and The Studio are essentially locks for this category because of their single options. The HBO Max series has been a consistent nominee — Lucia Aniello won for the first season in 2021 — and it submitted the penultimate episode,...

Twenty-five years after its release, But I’m a Cheerleader still raises spirits for fans of the cult queer comedy. Jamie Babbit marked her feature directorial debut with the project that stars Natasha Lyonne as Megan, a high school cheerleader sent to conversion-therapy camp when her loved ones suspect that she’s a lesbian.
The filmmaker hatched the idea after reading an article about gay rehabilitation centers and recruited Brian Wayne Peterson to write the script. Babbit cast Clea Duvall (who starred in her short film Sleeping Beauties) as Megan’s love interest. Rosario Dawson was among those considered for the lead, but the part went to Lyonne, who led 1998’s Slums of Beverly Hills and asked about Cheerleader after seeing the script in friend Duvall’s car. Rounding out the cast were Bud Cort, Melanie Lynskey and Michelle Williams.

Game of Thrones creator George R.R. Martin expresses his disappointment with the cancelation of My Lady Jane.
Per George R.R. Martin's personal blog, the acclaimed author discussed the cancelation of Prime Video's historical-fantasy series, My Lady Jane, which reimagined the story of Lady Jane Grey, the Nine Day Queen of England. "Speaking of television shows, I have always loved alternate history and Jane Grey, Englands nine-days queen, has always fascinated me," Martin wrote. "Small wonder, then, that I really enjoyed My Lady Jane, a clever and original historical fantasy on Amazon Prime, set in an England full of witches and shapechangers, where Jane lasts more than nine days."

Amazon Prime Video has cancelled the historical fantasy series “My Lady Jane” after its first season failed to attract enough viewers. The show, which premiered June 27 with all eight episodes released at once, told a revisionist tale of Lady Jane Grey, England’s queen for nine days in 1553.
Based on the young adult novels by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows, “My Lady Jane” blended elements of different genres to retell the traditional historical narrative from a new perspective. It featured humans called Ethians who could transform into animals and placed Lady Jane in a leading role as she sought to control her own destiny.
Despite an ensemble cast led by Emily Bader as Lady Jane Grey and Edward Bluemel as Lord Guildford Dudley, and production from experienced talent like Jamie Babbit and executive producers Gemma Burgess and Meredith Glynn, the show failed to break into Nielsen’s top ten streaming rankings.

Like the real Jane Grey, the reign of My Lady Jane turned out to be a short one.
Amazon’s Prime Video has canceled the period drama, which combined romance and alternate-world fantasy. The cancellation comes about seven weeks after Prime Video released all eight episodes of the show’s first (and now only) season.
My Lady Jane, based on a novel by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows, is set in a 16th century England where humans co-exist with shape-shifters who can take the form of either people or animals. Jane Grey (Emily Bader) is an ordinary human, known as a Verity, who becomes sympathetic to the oppressed shape-shifters, known as Ethians — which will become a problem for the ruling class as Jane rises to power.
Edward Bluemel, Rob Brydon, Dominic Cooper, Anna Chancellor, Jordan Peters, Kate O’Flynn, Henry Ashton, Jim Broadbent and Ollie Chris (who narrates) star alongside Bader.

Exclusive: Prime Video has opted not to renew My Lady Jane for a second season. The news comes seven weeks after all eight episodes from the show’s first season were binge released with little promotion June 27.
The news is not entirely surprising. Creatively, My Lady Jane has done well. Despite taking a very big swing with a premise that crosses genres that don’t normally co-exist — historical romance, fantasy, adventure, comedy and farce — it has been among the best reviewed new series this year. But it didn’t find a broad enough audience, never landing on Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming rankings for originals.
Created by Gemma Burgess based on the 2016 YA historical fiction novels, My Lady Jane takes an alt-history approach to one of England’s monarchs with the shortest rule, the 16th century Lady Jane Grey, aka the Nine Days Queen. Mixing palace intrigue with a fantastical take on class,...

[Editor’s note: The following article contains spoilers for a big twist in “My Lady Jane,” which is revealed about 10 minutes into Episode 1.]
Watching the trailer for “My Lady Jane,” the pseudo-feminist alt-Tudor history show based on the bestselling 2016 YA novel of the same name, you’d be forgiven for assuming the plot.
In real life, Lady Jane Grey, alongside her husband Guildford Dudley, was executed months after a mere nine days on the throne in 1553. In the opening seconds of the Prime Video show, the modern British narrator of “My Lady Jane” asks: “What if history were different?”
What if, indeed. Instead of immediate death, in the first few moments of the show teenage Jane (newcomer Emily Bader) is a smart medical gal, curing her friend’s 16th century Sti. She’s then told she’ll have to marry for a political alliance. Instead, she grabs her maid, Susannah (Máiréad Tyers), and attempts to make a run for it. The duo are immediately caught,...

Directed by Jamie Babbit and Stefan Schwartz, My Lady Jane makes us privy to a reimagination of a terrible tragedy that happened in real life when Jane Grey, queen of England, was killed after nine days of her marriage. This story takes inspiration from that real-life incident and then weaves a fictional narrative around it. The series is based on the works of Cynthia Hand, Jodi Meadows, and Brodi Ashton, and it takes us back to those times when patriarchal society did everything to make the existence of a woman miserable. So, let’s find out what happened in My Lady Jane series and how our protagonist dealt with the various conflicts that came her way.
Spoiler Alert
How did Jane and Gilfred get married?

Most movies and shows about the history of humankind are not accurate. Facts and events are distorted and rearranged to elicit certain emotional responses that align with the biases of the director or showrunner in question. And history buffs just love to nitpick them to hell, especially if said biases are a tad bit toxic in nature. But I think the subgenre that really drives them nuts is the alternate fantasy-history subgenre. For example, there’s Watchmen, which reimagined everything from the Cold War to the Vietnam War. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter turned the famous President into a killer of bloodsuckers. The X-Men films, MonsterVerse films, MCU films, Back to the Future films, and the Bill & Ted films have toyed with many historical figures. Shows like Fallout and Renegade Nell have done the same on the small screen. And, now, My Lady Jane has joined this illustrious list by...

It’s probably fair to say that every single drama about the Tudor dynasty would like you to know it’s not like all those other dramas about the Tudor dynasty. This one is steamier, or more emotionally intimate; that one features nontraditional casting or focuses on a less famous figure. So I’ll say this for Prime Video’s My Lady Jane: This one, really and truly, is not like the others. Sure, there are crowns and pretty ballgowns and cool sword fights and castles; as ever, the plot hinges on noble conspiracies and threats of beheading. But it also features a twist that sends it careening so far away from established reality, one wonders why it pretends to be about the Tudors at all.

Tatiana Maslany takes on a new challenge in The Nightbeast by seducing the Boogeyman in a darkly comedic tale. Emily Bader plays Lady Jane Gray in My Lady Jane for Amazon Prime Video, here’s the trailer for the new show.
Historical swashbucklers with female leading roles are becoming a regular feature, what with the success of Netflix’s Damsel and the Enola Holmes series, as well as Sally Wainwright’s wonderful Renegade Nell on Disney+.
The latest to hit the market is My Lady Jane, which comes to Amazon’s Prime Video service next month.
The synopsis reads as follows:
Gird your loins for the tragic tale of Lady Jane Grey, the young Tudor noblewoman who was Queen of England for nine days and then beheaded in 1553… F*ck that. We’re retelling history the way it should have happened: the damsel in distress saves herself. This is an epic tale of true love and high adventure set in an alt-universe of action, history, fantasy, comedy, romance, and rompy-pompy.

Only Murders In The Building, the Hulu comedy starring Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez, could remain on ABC in addition to streaming.
The Hulu original premiered on its sibling linear network earlier this month, coming as the network had a largely unscripted fall slate due to the Hollywood strikes. It remains on the streaming service.
ABC and Hulu boss Craig Erwich, speaking at the TCA press tour, said, “We’re certainly open to doing it with Only Murders again and or other shows. When we look at both ABC and Hulu, it’s one big chessboard, so you’re able to see where certain audiences watch certain shows, some migrate from one platform to another. Only Murders was really a perfect show to put on ABC, not only did we know that not a lot of people had watched it yet, as popular as it is, which is hard to believe,...

Hit-or-miss directors can still have one truly great movie. Making just one great film is more than most achieve in their entire lives. Some hit-or-miss directors started off with incredible debut movies but failed to recapture that magic in their later career. Others gained success through so-bad-it's-good movies that left a lasting impact on popular culture. Directors like Roland Emmerich, Jamie Babbit, and Simon West have had mixed careers, but their one truly great movie, such as Independence Day, But I'm a Cheerleader, and Con Air, stands out as a significant achievement in their filmography.
Some film directors have truly disappointing filmographies, however, even a stopped clock is right twice a day, and they still managed to deliver one truly great movie. From big budget blockbuster directors to small independent filmmakers, hit-or-miss directors must be commended because even if many of their films don’t reach the heights of their greatest achievements,...

“A League of Their Own” co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson has reacted to the news that Amazon has scrapped Season 2 due to the ongoing strikes, calling the decision “bullshit and cowardly.”
On Friday, Variety confirmed that the series — based on the 1992 baseball film of the same name — would no longer be going forward with its shortened final season, which was greenlit in April. According to sources, the cancellation came about due to the writers and actors strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
In an Instagram post over the weekend, Jacobson wrote: “What luck I have had to get to tell these stories and play this character I love so much. What a rare thing in life. And so I am sad today. To blame this cancellation on the strike, is bullshit and cowardly. But this post isn’t about all that. About all the ways...

‘A League Of Their Own’ Canceled: Prime Video Not Proceeding With Second & Final Season Amid Strikes
Exclusive: Prime Video is not moving forward with the previously ordered second — and final — season of comedy-drama A League Of Their Own, co-created and starring Abbi Jacobson, Deadline has learned.
It joins fellow Prime Video/Amazon Studios hourlong freshman series The Peripheral, which also had its Season 2 renewal reversed.
As Deadline reported earlier today, both cancellations are believed to stem from the length of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which have delayed TV production, creating large gaps between seasons and making shows miss their target release dates.
In a story earlier this week, Deadline reported that there may be more series whose renewals could be rescinded or pending pickups not happen if the work stoppage stretches past Labor Day, with freshman series going into Season 2 the most vulnerable. There was a similar string of unrenewals during the pandemic.

Pride month may be over but that’s no reason to stop digging through the treasure trove of underground queer cinema, even if this Natasha Lyonne starring gem aspires (and succeeds) to be more of a mainstream rom-com, featuring one of the most surprisingly emotional ending you could find in a goofy ‘90s flick. In 1999, before blowing up in the realm of TV with the likes of Orange is the New Black, Russian Doll, and this year’s Poker Face, Lyonne played Megan Bloomfield, the lead role in Jamie Babbit’s But I’m a Cheerleader, a film about a high school cheerleading superstar who’s sent away to a conversion therapy camp to cure her suspected lesbianism.

Back in 1999, years before Poker Face and Russian Doll, Natasha Lyonne starred as Megan Bloomfield in Jamie Babbit's cult classic But I'm a Cheerleader. The film follows Megan, a popular high school cheerleader who struggles with her feelings towards her boyfriend. Megan's parents suspect their daughter may be a lesbian, so they opt to send her away to conversion therapy. Once there, Megan befriends Graham Eaton (Clea DuVall) and the two eventually fall in love. The film, which also features Melanie Lynskey, RuPaul, and Cathy Moriarty, opened to predominantly negative reviews but has since amassed a cult following and has been credited for being ahead of its time.
In a recent interview with The Independent, Lyonne recalls being asked if she felt courageous for portraying an LGBTQ character after the release of But I'm a Cheerleader:

Old friends Natasha Lyonne and Melanie Lynskey have lots to reminisce about, having first forged a bond during the filming of the 1999 Kiss-inspired movie “Detroit Rock City.” But their most memorable on-screen pairing was in another movie that premiered that year — director Jamie Babbit’s queer cult classic “But I’m a Cheerleader.”
A quarter century into their friendship, Lynskey and Lyonne appreciate that both of their careers are peaking now that they’re in their 40s. On Showtime’s “Yellowjackets,” Lynskey plays Shauna, a reckless New Jersey housewife traumatized by her experiences in the wilderness as a teenager. In the Peacock howdunit “Poker Face,” Lyonne portrays human lie-detector Charlie Cale, who solves crimes as she traverses the country while on the run.

Jamie Babbit's directorial debut But I'm a Cheerleader, although initially seen as a commercial flop in 1999, has been heralded as a cinematic classic by the LGBTQ+ community. Starring Poker Face's Natasha Lyonne as Megan Bloomfield, the film's titular cheerleader character, But I'm a Cheerleader explores sexual identity, gender roles and the pervasive problem that is heteronormativity. Whereas mainstream audiences thought negatively of the film during its release, queer audiences who had longed for a movie of its kind were gripped by its story and characters, which allowed it to achieve its status as a cult classic. Even today, almost 25 years later, But I'm a Cheerleader is still beloved as one of the best gay teen comedies.
But while But I'm a Cheerleader resonated with the queer community decades ago because of the strengthening acceptance of queer culture, a revisit might make one wonder if it holds up. Some...

But Pj (Sennott) and Josie (Edebiri) find themselves in over their heads and in need of a way out before their plan is exposed.”
Director Emma Seligman co-wrote the screenplay with Sennott, who starred in the filmmaker’s 2020 indie hit “Shiva Baby.” Sennott stars in “Bottoms” opposite “The Bear” breakout star Edebiri, as well as Havana Rose Liu, Kaia Gerber, Nicholas Galitzine, Dagmara Dominczyk and Marshawn Lynch. HBO’s short-lived “Looking” never really stood a chance.
Creator Michael Lannan’s series about the ins and outs of three gay best friends in San Francisco ran for two seasons in 2014 and 2015, followed by a 2016 straight-to-hbo movie in place of a third season. Starring Jonathan Groff, Frankie J. Alvarez, Russell Tovey, and a pre-“White Lotus” Murray Bartlett, “Looking” arrived on the cusp of when studios started thinking seriously with their dollars in terms of telling queer stories for the mainstream. And those hoping “Looking” would be HBO’s gay answer to “Sex and the City” might have been disappointed with what they received instead: an indie film-style dramedy that played to the often drifting rhythms of its characters’ lives, seeking love and sex in a Bay Area being swallowed by the tech boom.

Jamie Babbit has directed six episodes of “Only Murders in the Building,” including the pilot and both finales, thus far, but the Season 2 closer was unique in one very efficient way. “In filmmaking, one of the most challenging things is putting all the equipment back in the truck, moving it around New York, unpacking all of the equipment, set it up, you shoot something, and then you have to pack everything back up in New York, put it in the trucks,” Babbit tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “So there’s something nice about having that many days in one location, where you can really focus on the performances.”
The Season 2 finale, which Babbit is submitting for the Emmys, primarily takes place in Bunny’s (Jayne Houdyshell) apartment, where Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) throw their killer reveal party — a party in...
