Amazon Prime Video has cancelled the historical fantasy series “My Lady Jane” after its first season failed to attract enough viewers. The show, which premiered June 27 with all eight episodes released at once, told a revisionist tale of Lady Jane Grey, England’s queen for nine days in 1553.

Based on the young adult novels by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows, “My Lady Jane” blended elements of different genres to retell the traditional historical narrative from a new perspective. It featured humans called Ethians who could transform into animals and placed Lady Jane in a leading role as she sought to control her own destiny.

Despite an ensemble cast led by Emily Bader as Lady Jane Grey and Edward Bluemel as Lord Guildford Dudley, and production from experienced talent like Jamie Babbit and executive producers Gemma Burgess and Meredith Glynn, the show failed to break into Nielsen’s top ten streaming rankings.

Like the real Jane Grey, the reign of My Lady Jane turned out to be a short one.

Amazon’s Prime Video has canceled the period drama, which combined romance and alternate-world fantasy. The cancellation comes about seven weeks after Prime Video released all eight episodes of the show’s first (and now only) season.

My Lady Jane, based on a novel by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows, is set in a 16th century England where humans co-exist with shape-shifters who can take the form of either people or animals. Jane Grey (Emily Bader) is an ordinary human, known as a Verity, who becomes sympathetic to the oppressed shape-shifters, known as Ethians — which will become a problem for the ruling class as Jane rises to power.

Edward Bluemel, Rob Brydon, Dominic Cooper, Anna Chancellor, Jordan Peters, Kate O’Flynn, Henry Ashton, Jim Broadbent and Ollie Chris (who narrates) star alongside Bader.

The historical fantasy drama series aired one eight-episode season at the streamer, which dropped in its entirety on June 27.

The news is not entirely surprising. Creatively, My Lady Jane has done well. Despite taking a very big swing with a premise that crosses genres that don’t normally co-exist — historical romance, fantasy, adventure, comedy and farce — it has been among the best reviewed new series this year. But it didn’t find a broad enough audience, never landing on Nielsen’s Top 10 weekly streaming rankings for originals.

The Amazon dark comedy pilot “The Nightbeast” has added three new series regulars to its cast, Variety has learned exclusively.

Cory Michael Smith, Michael Dorman, and Miles Marthaller will all star in the pilot alongside previously announced lead Tatiana Maslany.

It’s probably fair to say that every single drama about the Tudor dynasty would like you to know it’s not like all those other dramas about the Tudor dynasty. Historical swashbucklers with female leading roles are becoming a regular feature, what with the success of Netflix’s Damsel and the Enola Holmes series, as well as Sally Wainwright’s wonderful Renegade Nell on Disney+.

The latest to hit the market is My Lady Jane, which comes to Amazon’s Prime Video service next month.

The synopsis reads as follows:

The network will air the first season of Hulu’s critically adored comedy Only Murders in the Building in January. The season will run in two-hour blocks on Tuesday nights over three weeks starting Jan. 2, with a one-hour slot for the season finale on Jan. 23.

ABC will also move Celebrity Jeopardy! to Tuesday nights for its final episodes of the season, starting with a semifinal on Jan. 2. The game show will air at 8 p.m., followed by Only Murders at 9 p.m. The two-hour blocks on Jan. 2, 9 and 16 will contain three episodes each.

The moves will help ABC fill its schedule ahead of the return of its homegrown scripted series in February. Will Trent, The Rookie and The Good Doctor are set to occupy Tuesdays starting Feb. 20, but the network hadn’t previously announced any programming for the first few weeks...

As “Only Murders in the Building” fans await a fourth season of the hit Hulu comedy, they can relive the antics of the show’s first season via a broadcast run on ABC this January.

As it prepares to start returning new episodes of its strike-delayed series starting in February, the Alphabet net will fill the January gap with episodes of “Only Murders in the Building” on Tuesdays. All ten episodes of the show’s Season 1 will air back-to-back, starting with the first three episodes on Tuesday, Jan. 2.

According to insiders, ABC will follow broadcast standards and practices rules on the episodes, and the network has been working with the show’s producers on edits that need to be made. “A League of Their Own” co-creator and star Abbi Jacobson has reacted to the news that Amazon has scrapped Season 2 due to the ongoing strikes, calling the decision “bullshit and cowardly.”

On Friday, Variety confirmed that the series — based on the 1992 baseball film of the same name — would no longer be going forward with its shortened final season, which was greenlit in April. According to sources, the cancellation came about due to the writers and actors strike against the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

In an Instagram post over the weekend, Jacobson wrote: “What luck I have had to get to tell these stories and play this character I love so much. What a rare thing in life. And so I am sad today. To blame this cancellation on the strike, is bullshit and cowardly. But this post isn’t about all that. About all the ways...

Exclusive: Prime Video is not moving forward with the previously ordered second — and final — season of comedy-drama A League Of Their Own, co-created and starring Abbi Jacobson, Deadline has learned.

It joins fellow Prime Video/Amazon Studios hourlong freshman series The Peripheral, which also had its Season 2 renewal reversed.

As Deadline reported earlier today, both cancellations are believed to stem from the length of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which have delayed TV production, creating large gaps between seasons and making shows miss their target release dates.

In a story earlier this week, Deadline reported that there may be more series whose renewals could be rescinded or pending pickups not happen if the work stoppage stretches past Labor Day, with freshman series going into Season 2 the most vulnerable. There was a similar string of unrenewals during the pandemic.

MGM has released the first official trailer for the upcoming comedy “Bottoms,” starring Rachel Sennott and Ayo Edebiri.

In a nod to David Fincher’s “Fight Club,” “Bottoms” follows two queer teen girls who start a fight club with a plan to lose their virginities to cheerleaders. According to the film’s official logline, “Their bizarre plan works. The fight club gains traction and soon the most popular girls in school are beating each other up in the name of self-defense. But Pj (Sennott) and Josie (Edebiri) find themselves in over their heads and in need of a way out before their plan is exposed.”

Jamie Babbit has directed six episodes of “Only Murders in the Building,” including the pilot and both finales, thus far, but the Season 2 closer was unique in one very efficient way. “In filmmaking, one of the most challenging things is putting all the equipment back in the truck, moving it around New York, unpacking all of the equipment, set it up, you shoot something, and then you have to pack everything back up in New York, put it in the trucks,” Babbit tells Gold Derby (watch the exclusive video interview above). “So there’s something nice about having that many days in one location, where you can really focus on the performances.”

Amazon has officially renewed “A League of Their Own” for Season 2, which will also be the show’s last. The first season consisted of eight episodes, while the second season will consist of just four.

“Making this show and seeing the impact it has had in the world has been an incredible joy,” said series creators Will Graham and Abbi Jacobson. “While obviously we were hoping for eleven seasons, we’re grateful to be able to continue to tell the story of these characters and this world.”

The announcement comes about a month after it was initially reported that “A League of Their Own” would be coming to an end with an abbreviated second season.

Following months of renewal chatter about A League of Their Own, Prime Video is fueling the flames of suspicion further with a Twitter post.

“Spring Training is officially underway,” read the tweet posted Saturday morning on streamer’s official feed, prompting a number of responses from fans asking whether this means a Season 2 is finally happening.

While sources tell Deadline that the social media post was done to mark the start of MLB’s 2023 Spring Training, one could understand why fans are interpreting its message differently.

It’s been more than six months since Season 1 of A League Of Their Own premiered on Prime Video with no official word on the show’s fate. There have been positive signs that that show, which has developed a devoted following, would get a second season.

Meryl Streep has officially checked into the Arconia. The three-time Oscar winner will join the Season 3 cast of “Only Murders in the Building,” the starring trio of Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez announced on social media.

On Twitter, Martin shared a cast photo featuring “The Devil Wears Prada” actress. “The filming of Season 3 of ‘Only Murders in the Building’ has begun! A cast to dream of,” the veteran actor wrote.

The official Hulu account replied, “It is an Honor to have Meryl in our building!”

Gomez later shared a longer Instagram clip of the cast hanging out on set, where Streep popped up from behind the couch after Rudd teased that the season could certainly “get a little bit better.” In the video, Streep adjusts a pillow for Martin and asks Short if he needs anything, to which the latter replies, “Just the tea that I had asked for half an hour ago.

Prime Video is expanding the cast for the first season of My Lady Jane, its historical comedy series about Brit monarch Jane Grey, starring Emily Bader, Edward Bluemel and Jordan Peters. Joining the series are Dominic Cooper (Preacher) as Lord Seymour, Rob Brydon (The Trip) as Lord Dudley, Will Keen (His Dark Materials) as the Duke of Norfolk, Anna Chancellor (Pennyworth) as Lady Frances Grey, and Jim Broadbent (The Duke) as the Duke of Leicester. The series is currently filming in London, and will be available on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.

Jesse Williams has been cast in Season 3 of “Only Murders in the Building.”

Williams will recur as a documentarian with a particular interest in the case that Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short) are working on.

The series follows three unlikely friends who live in the same building in New York City and bond over their love of true crime when they find themselves in the middle of a real-life murder mystery and begin recording a podcast of their own. In Season 1, they investigate the death of their neighbor Tim Kono, while Season 2 saw them investigate after finding their building’s board president Bunny Folger (Jayne Houdyshell) murdered. Along with Williams, Gomez, Martin and Short, Season 3 also stars Paul Rudd.

Jamie Babbit's 1999 film "But I'm a Cheerleader" is a broad, colorful satire that takes aim at that most deserving of targets: conversion camps for teens. So-called conversion therapy, openly lambasted by the Human Rights Campaign, is the attempt to alter a young person's sexual orientation or gender identity, often using any number of abusive or manipulative means. As of this writing, conversion therapy is illegal in France, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Albania, Canada, and multiple U.S. States. Bans are pending in other countries. Many of these conversion camps are run by church groups, "ex-gay" ministries, and other non-profit organizations. Many people who have run said camps have come out to denounce them as psychologically torturous.
