Breeders Drops Bombshells Galore in Final Season Trailer
Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard in Breeders (2020)
When FX announced late last month that its hit comedy series Breeders was ending, we didn't anticipate the trailer for the fourth and final season would have this much closure.

FX went public with the Breeders Season 4 trailer on Wednesday, and it's filled with bombshells about your favorite characters.

Before we get into the revelations, we should probably remind you that there's a five-year time jump by the time the series returns.

Paul and Ally are left blindsided when Luke reveals he's leaving the family home because his girlfriend is pregnant.

The teenager is ready to embrace the new chapter of his life away from the prying eyes of his family.

Ava reveals that she has feelings for her grandad's hairdresser, which leaves the family with many questions.

And it wouldn't be Breeders without some drama from Paul and Ally.

As much as I love the blood and guts of gory horror, the laughs of comedy horror or the big-budgeted genre flicks, my favourite sub-genre of horror at the moment is the slow-burn films, full of atmosphere that usually have an ending worth waiting for. She Will looked like it was going to be one of those movies.

After a double mastectomy, Veronica heads to a healing retreat in rural Scotland. She goes with her young nurse, Desi, expecting to be alone for the retreat but instead ends up at a group event. Clearly not comfortable with other people being there she needs persuading to stay and Desi and she become closer. While there she learns to...

It Starts On The Page: Read A Dark Script From FX’s Parenting Comedy ‘Breeders’
Image
Breeders is a dark comedy. But towards the end of the second season of the Martin Freeman- and Daisy Haggard-fronted parenting series, it gets even darker.

Season 2 of the FX and Sky series starts with their children, Luke (now played by Alex Eastwood) and Ava (Eve Prenelle), six years older than they were in Season 1, thus serving up brand-new parenting challenges for Freeman’s Paul and Haggard’s Ally.

Luke’s increasing anxiety and Ava’s growing independence added some new and uncharted complications into the existing chaotic mix of stretched resources, lack of time and the fine art of winging it while looking like you know what you’re doing.

Paul’s parents, Jackie and Jim (Joanna Bacon and Alun Armstrong), are older too, as is Ally’s mother Leah (Stella Gonet), leading Paul and Ally to find that they now have to parent the generation above...

‘Breeders’ Renewed for Season 3 at FX
Image
“Breeders” has been renewed for Season 3 at FX.

The comedy series starring Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard wrapped up its second season on May 17. Season 3 will debut in 2022.

“Delighted that we’ve got three seasons,” said series showrunner and co-creator Simon Blackwell. “One more and it’s a pizza. This is such a superb team to work with, and it’s a pleasure and a privilege to make the show. I can’t wait to see what terrible and brilliant but let’s face it mainly terrible things will happen to the Worsley family in the next 10 episodes.”

In Season 2, Luke (Alex Eastwood) is now 13 years old and Ava (Eve Prenelle) is 10, serving up brand new parenting challenges for Paul (Freeman) and Ally (Haggard). ‘Breeders’ Renewed For Season 3 At FX & Sky
Image
Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard’s parenting comedy Breeders is returning for a third season.

FX and Sky have renewed the Avalon-produced series for a third run airing in 2022. The second season just finished its run in the U.S.

It comes after Simon Blackwell told Deadline that he and his colleagues, including Chris Addison, had set up a physical writers room, rather than having to collaborate over Zoom.

Breeders explores the parental paradox that you’d happily die for your children, but quite often you also want to kill them. Season 2 flashes forward with Luke (Alex Eastwood), now 13, and Ava (Eve Prenelle), now 13, thus serving up brand-new parenting challenges for Freeman’s Paul and Haggard’s Ally.

Luke’s increasing anxiety and Ava’s growing independence add some new and uncharted complications into the existing chaotic mix of stretched resources, lack of time and the fine art of...

Breeders: the Season 2 Finale Confronts a Painful Parenting Truth
Image
Warning: contains spoilers for the Breeders season two finale.

Philip Larkin put it memorably, but there’s no need to take his word for it. We all know that characterful noses aren’t the only things carried down the generations. There are also the traits that no parent means to pass on: insecurities and neuroses absorbed in daily doses from age zero to left-home, that leach out involuntarily to our own kids when the time comes. For Martin Freeman’s character Paul in FX/Sky One comedy Breeders, it’s his anger and anxiety, inherited by son Luke (Alex Eastwood), and threatening to break their relationship.

The Breeders season two cliffhanger sees Paul voluntarily move out of the family home because Luke refuses to live with him. Partner Ally (Daisy Haggard) doesn’t want Paul to go, daughter Ava (Eve Prenelle) doesn’t want him to go, and Paul definitely doesn’t want to go,...

Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard in Breeders (2020)
FX is pregnant with more “Breeders” on the way. The cable channel has renewed Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard’s bad-parenting comedy for Season 2.

“We are proud of everything the creative team and talent on ‘Breeders’ achieved in the first season and look forward to seeing where they take it in season two,” Nick Grad, president of original programming at FX Entertainment, said in announcing the renewal. “‘Breeders’ has really resonated with viewers, who’ve come to appreciate its honest and humorous take on the challenges of modern parenting.”

“So pleased we get another go at ‘Breeders,'” Freeman said in a statement on Monday. “I reckon the next one will be even better. It’s such a pleasure working with this team… we’ll see you all soon. Well, not soon. But at some point, honest.”

How Martin Freeman Navigates Screaming and Cursing at Young Children in ‘Breeders’ (Video)
Last TCA, we were treated to the pilot episode of upcoming FX comedy “Breeders,” which stars Martin Freeman and Daisy Haggard as the very imperfect parents of two young, impressionable children. This TCA, we got the trailer and a panel — and an explanation on how Freeman and his fellow co-creators handle the on-screen screaming and cursing at kid actors.

“There are actually rules…about what they can and can’t see and hear,” Freeman said on Thursday. “So obviously if there’s a lot of swearing, a lot of cursing in the scene, we do a cleaned-up dialogue version, and then once the kids have left then we get to do the swearing.”

“We try to keep it as fun as possible,” he continued. “But there are also times where you have to instill in them that this is a serious [scene], that you’re going to be on the receiving...

Review: Terence Davies' "A Quiet Passion"
A Quiet PassionThough set nearly 150 years ago, Terence Davies' exquisite Emily Dickinson biopic A Quiet Passion is vitally relevant, as it spans centuries to reveal an agile female intelligence and willful body unable to fit into this prejudiced world. The pleading desire for contentment and the strangling despair of disappointment lays upon the American poet, played briefly in her youth by Emily Bell and for the rest of the film by a magnificent Cynthia Nixon. Abutting a society that constrains so many possibilities for her gender, Dickinson weighs the world and finds it wanting for a pathway to a woman's fulfilled happiness.Davies, as always mining the past for its reverberating, ailing souls and tragic social repression, finds in Emily Dickinson a subject for rigorous, almost austere inquiry. Conversations on the nature of religious dogma, God's touch and distance, marriage, family, artistic creation and more flush A Quiet Passion with a forceful,...

Feeling as others do, part 2 by Anne-Katrin Titze
Terence Davies to Catherine Marchand: "I don't want them to look as though they'd just come from costume." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze

Terence Davies, the esteemed director of The House Of Mirth; Distant Voices, Still Lives; The Deep Blue Sea; The Long Day Closes, and Sunset Song spoke with me on the costume designs by Catherine Marchand for his latest film A Quiet Passion, starring Cynthia Nixon as Emily Dickinson with Jennifer Ehle as her sister Vinnie. Catherine Bailey, Keith Carradine, Duncan Duff, Joanna Bacon, Benjamin Wainwright, Sara Vertongen, Emma Bell, Jodhi May, and Noémie Schellens head a dandy supporting cast.

Hearing Claire Bloom read Dickinson, kidney disease, and Jean-Pierre Léaud in Albert Serra's The Death Of Louis Xiv come up in the second part of a series on my journey with Terence Davies.

This is the first part of a series on my journey with Terence Davies into A Quiet Passion, starring Cynthia Nixon as Emily Dickinson with Jennifer Ehle (Alan Rickman's A Little Chaos) as her sister Vinnie, which was screened in the New York Film Festival in the Film Comment Presents selection. The exemplary supporting cast includes Keith Carradine (David Lowery's Ain't Them Bodies Saints), Duncan Duff, Joanna Bacon, Benjamin Wainwright (Jason Connery's Tommy's Honour), Emma Bell, Jodhi May (Sally Potter's Ginger & Rosa), Noémie Schellens, Catherine Bailey and Sara Vertongen.

Cynthia Nixon in First Trailer for Terence Davies' Film 'A Quiet Passion'
"You are alone in your rebellion, Ms. Dickinson." Get ready to be enthralled by the words and emotions of Emily Dickinson. A festival trailer has debuted for the film A Quiet Passion, from director Terence Davis (whose other film Sunset Song was just released in theaters this year). Cynthia Nixon stars as the legendary poet Emily Dickinson in this "luminous biopic". Also starring Jennifer Ehle, Keith Carradine, Duncan Duff, Jodhi May, Joanna Bacon and Catherine Bailey. These kind of intense period pieces aren't usually my thing, and I'm not that curious about this. However, the music they used for this trailer definitely got my attention. It's the track "Stars Wait For Us" by Plu-Ton and it seems odd, but totally works. Here's the first official trailer for Terence Davis' A Quiet Passion, direct from YouTube (via Tfs): Emily Dickinson wrote over a thousand poems in her lifetime but witnessed...

‘A Quiet Passion’ Trailer: Cynthia Nixon Embodies Reclusive Emily Dickinson In Terence Davies-Directed Biopic
Cynthia Nixon in A Quiet Passion (2016)
The story of the reclusive American poet Emily Dickinson comes to life in Terence Davies’ “A Quiet Passion,” which will be screened at the Toronto International Film Festival this fall.

A new festival trailer for the period drama was just released and showcases Cynthia Nixon as the renowned artist as she struggles with the world around her.

“A Quiet Passion” is a unique insight into Dickinson’s life and obsessions, and follows the writer from her schoolgirl days in Amherst, Massachusetts to her years writing in near-total isolation, where she produced over a thousand poems that are now regarded as the finest and most inventive in American literature.

[Berlin Review] A Quiet Passion
“You are alone you your revolution, Ms. Dickinson,” spouts a stoic headmistress in the opening sequence of A Quiet Passion, a biopic of 19th-century American poet Emily Dickinson and the latest work from proud Liverpudlian auteur Terence Davies. In the scene, young Emily has apparently rejected both a life in the seminary and the option to be a practicing catholic, a decision the famously atheistic director clearly vibes with. That sense of empathy and understanding with his subject is rife throughout this quietly cleansing and exquisitely considered film, which shows the writer from her late teens (portrayed by Emma Bell) through to adulthood (Cynthia Nixon) and old age.

This frank introductory scene is one of a few exceptions — it occurs outside the grounds of Dickinson’s family home, where the majority of this film takes place. Here, Davies imagines and reenacts delicately detailed social exchanges between the family members and their various bourgeois guests.

Berlinale 2016. Women Poets and Philosophers
A Quiet Passion. Johan Voets © A Quiet Passion Ltd/Hurricane Films 2016Two films have emerged as Berlin's finest this year intertwined by the fates of festival scheduling. The echoes are simple, but that hardly effaces their power, nor the fact that cinema, an art founded in the magic of images changing over time, can make two films separated by time, in viewing, and history, in setting, part of an enchanted continuum. If Emily Dickinson had lived today, could she perhaps resemble Isabelle Huppert's fair, adult and satisfied philosophy professor, wife and mother in Mia Hanson-Løve's tender contemporary drama Things to Come? Nearly 150 years earlier, the pleading desire for contentment and the strangling despair of disappointment lays upon the American poet, played briefly by Emily Bell young and Cynthia Nixon until death, in Terence Davies' exquisite biopic A Quiet Passion. Yet how an agile female intelligence and a willful...
