Netflix's New Superbad-Esque Comedy Fixes The Worst Part Of A John Hughes Classic
Image
"The Mick" creators and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" writers Dave and John Chernin made their feature directorial debut with "Incoming," a coming-of-age sex comedy for Netflix about a group of incoming freshmen attending their first high school party. It's a raucous, raunchy, ridiculous night of debauchery featuring a 14-year-old running a control room of spy cams, plenty of upperclassmen making the beast with two backs in random open bedrooms, a science teacher desperately trying to appear cool by taking shots of Fireball and ripping bongs with students, fist fights leading to broken noses, accidentally falling into a K-hole, running from the cops, and drunkenly sharting out a night's worth of Taco Bell binge-eating.

"Incoming" is an attempt to merge the tradition of beloved high school stories with the over-the-top screwball sex comedies of the 1970s and '80s, and when it works, it really works. Similar to recent high...

13 Best Quotes From Sixteen Candles
Image
Sixteen Candles quotes may feel dated, but they still have a retro charm that captures the voice of a generation. Molly Ringwald's character Sam expresses passive-aggressive frustration over her forgotten birthday, highlighting teenage angst. Jake's pursuit of a serious girlfriend and Sam's crush on him leads to a heartwarming happy ending in this John Hughes classic.

Sixteen Candles is a beloved John Hughes classic, and as is the case with many of John Hughes '80s movies, the Sixteen Candles quotes remain something fans remember four decades later. Released in 1984 and starring Molly Ringwald as Sam Baker, the movie is memorable for its funny situations, unusual characters, and a sweet sixteen gone hilariously wrong. Frenzied by the impending wedding of their oldest daughter, Sam's parents completely forget her sixteenth birthday, and after this, things get worse.

Like many John Hughes movies, several Sixteen Candles quotes feel very dated. The...

“As a gratefully, if not begrudgingly, Earth-bound band, it’s always an honor and a challenge to tackle any of David Bowie’s space-soaring arrangements,” Wilco said in a statement.

Wilco Release “Space Oddity” Cover for David Bowie’s Birthday: Stream

Monday, January 8th, would’ve been David Bowie’s 77th birthday. To mark the occasion, Wilco has shared their rendition of Bowie’s 1969 hit, “Space Oddity.”

The release hails from Wilco’s 2023 performance on Mountain Stage (a public radio show distributed by NPR Music), and will be included on an upcoming compilation announced today titled Live On Mountain Stage: Outlaws and Outliers, due on April 19th via Oh Boy Records.

Presenting a wonderfully Wilco-esque take on “Space Oddity” — itself named the 43rd best song of all time by Consequence in 2012 — the band settles into an acoustic arrangement, allowing Jeff Tweedy’s vocals to masterfully convey the tune’s enduring appeal for humanity.

Speaking about the performance in a statement, the band said: “As a gratefully, if not begrudgingly, Earth-bound band, it’s always an honor and a challenge to tackle any of David Bowie’s space-soaring arrangements. Striving to reach...

Carlin Glynn, Actress in ‘Best Little Whorehouse in Texas’ and ‘Sixteen Candles,’ Dies at 83
Image
Carlin Glynn, who won a Tony Award for her performance as the madam Mona Stangley in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas and had strong supporting turns in the films Sixteen Candles and The Trip to Bountiful, has died. She was 83.

Glynn died July 13, her daughter, actress Mary Stuart Masterson (Fried Green Tomatoes, Benny & Joon), announced in an Instagram post. She died in upstate New York, and the cause was lung cancer.

“My mother, Carlin Glynn Masterson, passed away. I was with her. I will always be grateful for those last moments, no matter how hard,” she wrote. “Death is like birth in the oddest way. From my first breath to her last. This thread is as fragile as it is strong.

“She was the most graceful clumsy person you would ever meet. Strong, smart, silly, intuitive, kind, generous, passionate and a deep listener. She was devoted to my father...
