Steve Hansgen, Minor Threat Bassist and Tool Producer, Battling Stage 4 Kidney Disease
Image
Steve Hansgen, a onetime bassist for Minor Threat and a co-producer on Tool’s Opiate EP, has been diagnosed a stage 4 kidney disease.

A GoFundMe has been launched to aid the veteran Washington D.C. musician, who also played with Government Issue in the 1980s and took part in the Youth Brigade reunion in 2012. He’s currently a member of the group Poisonous H.

Hansgen’s girlfriend and Poisonous H bandmate Holly took to social media to share the unfortunate news of Steve’s diagnosis. As Holly explained, despite recently reversing his Type 2 diabetes, Steve’s kidney function had deteriorated greatly. He’s now on dialysis until a donor can be found, as the current waitlist is five years.

Posted Holly on the Poisonous H Instagram page:

“Bummer to have to post this but as some of you may already know, @steviehansgen needs a kidney transplant. Over the last several years,...

The performer has all kinds of tattoos on his body, which include him paying homage to Bruce Lee, his state of mind, and the things he believes in. Interestingly, one tattoo beats the lot, the iconic Pepsi tattoo on his left shoulder, which has always got the fans talking.

Recently, the Second City Saint made his appearance on WWE Tattooed, finally answering why he permanently inked himself with the brand logo on his body.

Midway through the 25th annual Light of Day benefit at the Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank, New Jersey, on Saturday night, Jesse Malin confirmed rumors that had been swirling around town since the late afternoon: Bruce Springsteen was in the house. It was one of the first times that Malin has performed in public since suffering a devastating spinal stroke in 2023, and he used the mic stand, along with the tremendous force of his will, to pull himself to his feet and welcome his old friend...

Echoes from the Amp: Rediscovering Hard Rock’s Unsung Bands
David Roach - writer, director
Chicago – I’m Jeff Doles, Music Editor at HollywoodChicago.com.

In this opinion series, I’ll delve into some of my favorite hard rock bands that in my view didn’t get the recognition they deserved. These are bands that brought raw energy and grit to the scene, only to be overshadowed by bigger, sometimes less talented acts. So, turn up your speakers and join me in paying tribute the icons who – despite the odds – left an unforgettable mark on the genre.

As I get older, I often find myself reaching for the music that defined my youth. The 1980s and early ‘90s were a turning point in rock ‘n’ roll … marked by heavy riffs, powerful hooks, and over-the-top showmanship. This era saw bands blending rock’s raw energy with swagger and theatrics, creating a sound and style that was loud, rebellious, and unapologetically bold.

V/H/S/Beyond Cast & Character Guide
Image
The horror anthology movie V/H/S/Beyond features a huge cast of characters, and the nature of its found-footage format makes it hard to identify all the actors. V/H/S/Beyond has seven directors and far more cast members, so finding out who plays which character can be quite a challenge. The fact that the movie is split into six segments also makes it harder to identify actors, as each segment only lasted about 20 minutes. Given the performances in V/H/S/Beyond, however, these names are ones to remember.

V/H/S/Beyond has found quite a bit of success, and it's partly thanks to the huge number of talented actors who contributed to the project. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 90%, V/H/S/Beyond is perfect to watch while waiting for the next big horror film. Some of the actors in the film could well become the next big names in horror, and it's worth getting to know them.

V/H/S Beyond Review | This Alien Splatterfest Is a Solid Addition
Image
In the 12 years since the release of its flagship film, the V/H/S franchise has spawned six sequels, a pair of spinoffs, and a forgotten miniseries (released exclusively on Snapchat). Following last year's V/H/S/85, the latest installment in the found-footage horror series is V/H/S/Beyond, a collection of segments based on aliens and featuring some of the franchise's best and gnarliest special effects to date.

Presented as a fake documentary about aliens, each segment of V/H/S/Beyond is broken up by talking-head interviews with experts, including a longtime believer and scholar and a trio of YouTubers who specialize in visual effects and make a living by debunking purported UFO footage. That ideological balance is thoughtful if somewhat extraneous in a horror anthology whose primary goal is to maximize thrills and chills, as Beyond often does.

Minor Threat Share New EP of Out of Step Outtakes: Stream
Image
Minor Threat have released a new EP, titled Out of Step Outtakes, to mark the 40th anniversary of their only studio album. Stream it below via Apple Music or Spotify.

The three-song collection contains material recorded during the original Out of Step sessions in January 1983, Minor Threat’s first time in the studio as a five-piece band. During that period, they did new versions of “In My Eyes” and “Filler”. Using the remaining blank tape on the reel, they also recorded an instrumental called “Addams Family,” which wound up being used as a coda to “Cashing In.”

All three songs ended up being sealed in Minor Threat’s vault for over 35 years, until the multitrack tapes were taken to the studio to be digitized in 2021. Upon the discovery, singer Ian MacKaye and Don Zientara mixed the tracks to be included on Out of Step Outtakes. Pick up your 7-inch vinyl copy here.

Minor Threat Announce New EP of Out of Step Outtakes
Image
A new EP containing unreleased Minor Threat music will coincide with the 40th anniversary of the band’s only full-length studio album, Out of Step. Aptly dubbed Out of Step Outtakes, the three-song EP contains material recording during the original Out of Step sessions in 1983. It will be released on December 1st via singer Ian MacKaye’s Dischord Records.

The sessions that spawned Out of Step Outtakes occurred in January 1983, marking Minor Threat’s first time in the studio as a five-piece band. Experimenting with the new sound, they cut new versions of their songs “In My Eyes” and “Filler,” both previously released on their debut EP, 1981’s Minor Threat, as well as a handful of other tracks. Afterwards, they had blank tape left on the reel, and decided to record an instrumental song titled “Addams Family,” which was ultimately adapted into a coda for Out of Step’s hidden track,...

Inside Law: It pays to be vigilant when it comes to recoupment
Producer, director and lawyer Murray Fahey, principal Fahey Rosenblum Laywers and Mediators, warns producers to be mindful when it comes to recoupment.

Too often creatives are focused on one of two issues: raising the money or creating the content. But if we are to have a sustainable industry, there should always be an eye on the third and most crucial issue in production: recouping the money from the various territories and formats that creative content is licensed to.

Traditionally, this has been the role of producers, who either are hands-on and chase the returns, or appoint collections agents to manage the collection of revenues. It has always been difficult for producers to track funds, particularly from overseas territories, and even more difficult to litigate and track the sales agents who change their executive and corporate structures quicker than rooms in a renovation reality TV show.

The big question is: Who do you trust?...

This interview originally appeared in the April 17, 1997 issue of Rolling Stone

You knew he was tall, but when Ric Ocasek walks out of the Blue Room at the Chung King House of Metal, in New York, you realize he’s impossibly tall — and reedlike to the point of being wispy. The man whom those over 25 know as the former leader of New Wave icons the Cars (and those under 25 know as the producer of Weezer and Nada Surf) is here recording his fifth solo album; Smashing Pumpkin Billy Corgan is producing a few tracks,...
