Charles Strouse Dies: Prolific Composer Of Broadway’s ‘Bye Bye Birdie,’ Film’s ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ And TV’s ‘All In The Family’ Theme Was 96
Image
Charles Strouse, the musical composer for such Broadway hits as Bye Bye Birdie, Applause and Annie, films including Bonnie and Clyde (1967) The Night They Raided Minsky’s (1968) and All Dogs Go To Heaven (1989) and for the TV series All In The Family, died at his home in New York City on May 15. He was 96.

His death was announced by his children Benjamin, Nicholas, Victoria, and William Strouse., and was nominated for Golden Boy, Charlie & Algernon, Rags, and Nick & Nora.

Strouse was born on June 7, 1928 in New York City, the son of Ethel (Newman) and Ira Strouse. After graduating from the Eastman School of Music in 1947, he received two scholarships to Tanglewood, where he studied under composer Aaron Copland. Subsequently, Copland arranged for Strouse to get a scholarship with legendary teacher, Nadia Boulanger, in Paris.

Strouse met songwriting partner, lyricist Adams, at a party in 1949, and the duo began a longtime collaboration starting with writing songs for summer resorts in the Adirondacks. Strouse and Adams contributed material to numerous Off-Broadway musical revues, including Catch a Star, Shoestring Revue, The Littlest Revue and Kaleidoscope, and wrote specialty material for Kaye Ballard, Carol Burnett, Jane Morgan and Dick Shawn.

In 1958, Strouse and lyricist, Fred Tobias wrote the chart-topping pop song “Born Too Late” (recorded by The Poni-Tails), and it was in that same year that Strouse and Adams had their Broadway breakthrough. They were hired by producer Edward Padula to write a satirical musical about rock and roll and teen idol culture. The show, Bye Bye Birdie, became their first Tony Award-winning hit. The production starred Chita Rivera and Dick Van Dyke and won four 1961 Tony Awards including Best Musical, earning Strouse the first of his three Tony Awards.

The show introduced the world to such songs as “Put On A Happy Face,” and “A Lot of Livin’ to Do.” A 1962 movie version, starring Ann-Margret, was one of the top-grossing films of the year, and featured Margret’s now iconic performance of the film’s newly added title song, “Bye Bye Birdie.” Strouse would later win a 1996 Emmy Award for the new song, “Let’s Settle Down,” written with Adams and added for the musical’s 1995 TV adaptation, starring Jason Alexander and Vanessa Williams.

Deadline Related Video:

Additional collaborations with Adams include the Mel Brooks musical All American (1962) starring Ray Bolger. Though the show was not a commercial success, it featured what would become the popular American standard “Once Upon a Time”. Golden Boy (1963), a musical adaptation of the play by Clifford Odets starred Sammy Davis Jr., garnered Strouse his second Tony Award nomination. It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane… It’s Superman! gave audiences another popular Strouse & Adams song, “You’ve Got Possibilities” (first recorded by Linda Lavin). And in 1970, when the team wrote the score for Applause (based on the film All About Eve and Mary Orr’s The Wisdom of Eve and starring Lauren Bacall), Strouse would win his second Tony Award.

Strouse’s biggest Broadway success was with collaborators Martin Charnin and Thomas Meehan on Annie (1977), based on the comic strip, “Little Orphan Annie,” by Harold Gray. The Depression-era musical about a plucky red-headed orphan girl who wins the heart of billionaire Oliver Warbucks, was one of Broadway’s biggest hits of the 1970s, winning seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and garnering Strouse his third Tony Award and a Grammy Award for Best Cast Show Album. Strouse’s score included “Tomorrow,” “It’s the Hard–Knock Life,” “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile,” and “I Don’t Need Anything But You.” Annie ran for over 2,300 performances on Broadway, where it has been revived twice and has inspired hundreds of worldwide productions. It has also been adapted for two film and two television productions.

Strouse was passionate about collaboration and would earn Tony Award nominations for his scores with lyricists: David Rogers, Charlie & Algernon (1980), based on the novel Flowers for Algernon, Steven Schwartz, for Rags (1986), with book writer Joseph Stein starring Teresa Stratas, and Nick and Nora (1991), a musical based on Dashiell Hammett’s The Thin Man characters, written with Richard Maltby, Jr.

Strouse’s film scores include Bonnie and Clyde (1967) starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, There Was a Crooked Man (1970), with Henry Fonda and Kirk Douglas, Sidney Lumet’s Just Tell Me What You Want, and the animated feature All Dogs Go To Heaven (1989).

In addition to his awards, Strouse was the recipient of several honorary doctorates. He was a longtime member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, inducted in 1985, and the Theatre Hall of Fame.

Strouse also composed orchestral works, chamber music, piano concertos, and an opera. His original piano work, Concerto America, was composed in 2002 to commemorate 9/11 and premiered at The Boston Pops in 2004. His opera Nightingale (1982), starring Sarah Brightman, had a successful run in London, followed by many subsequent productions.

In 1977, Strouse founded the ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop, through which many young composers and lyricists honed their craft and developed their work. Strouse authored the autobiography Put on a Happy Face: A Broadway Memoir, published by Union Square Press in July 2008.

In addition to his four children, Strouse is survived by eight grandchildren, Sam and Arthur Strouse, Navah Strouse, Vivian, Weston and Ever Brush, and Owen and Theodore Strouse.

A private ceremony will be held at Frank E. Campbell Funeral Chapel in New York City.

‘The Good Nurse’: Eddie Redmayne going all sinister is right up Oscar’s alley
Image
Eddie Redmayne won his first Oscar for playing the paralyzed genius Stephen Hawking in the warmly received biopic “The Theory of Everything.” In telling the story of how the Oxford-educated Hawking overcame his physical limitations brought on by Als — or Lou Gehrig’s disease — to have a brilliant career as a physicist and author (“A Brief History of Time” was a best seller), and achieve personal satisfaction with two wives and two children, Redmayne won the hearts of academy voters and claimed the Best Actor prize in 2015.

Seven years later, Redmayne is trying for a second gold statuette in another real-life role but this one is sinister and twisted. The British actor plays Charles Cullen, a nurse who is serving 18 consecutive life sentences for the murders of various patients in his care in the Netflix film “The Good Nurse.” The “good” in the title refers to Amy Loughren, the...

His death was announced by spokesperson Kevin McAnarney.

New Movies to Watch This Week: ‘Father Soldier Son’ on Netflix, ‘Dirt Music’ on Demand
Image
July 17 is the weekend that Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” was supposed to open, but in the face of the coronavirus outbreak, the world has folded back on itself like a scene from one of the director’s mind-benders. As infection rates hit new highs in the U.S., theaters postpone or reverse their plans to reopen, and movies that planned to follow “Tenet” scramble to later spots on the calendar.

That leaves streaming platforms and on-demand services to once again pick up the slack, offering a genre-spanning selection of new offerings. There are showbiz documentaries — including one spotlighting Broadway legend Kaye Ballard, and another about animation mavens Spike and Mike — as well as Sundance-blessed indie offerings such as “Dirt Music” (with Garrett Hedlund) and “The Sunlit Night” (starring Jenny Slate).

On Netflix, there’s “The Best Years of Our Lives” meets “Boyhood” in the decade-spanning, New York Times-produced documentary “Father Soldier Son,...

Official Trailer for 'Kaye Ballard: The Show Goes On!' Documentary
Kaye Ballard
"She's original, she's not like anybody else." Abramorama recently debuted the first official trailer for Kaye Ballard: The Show Goes On!, a documentary film about the famed actress Kaye Ballard. This originally premiered at the Palm Springs Film Festival last year, and debuts virtually next month. Their description explains: "This charming documentary showcases the career of musical-comedy sensation Kaye Ballard, whose ability to sing and tell jokes was ubiquitous in the late 20th century. Delightful moments are captured in rare archival footage and interviews with Ann-Margret, Michael Feinstein and Ballard herself." After an extraordinary career in the arts, Ballard unfortunately passed away early last year at the age of 93. "The film sparkles with the energy of the era of entertainers whose skills had to bridge vaudeville to theater, radio to film, and television variety shows to sit coms." If you're interested in a fascinating actress, give this a watch.

Oscars In Memoriam: Penny Marshall and Burt Reynolds Among Those Remembered
Gene Hackman, Terence Stamp, Ned Beatty, Christopher Reeve, Jackie Cooper, Sarah Douglas, Jeff East, Margot Kidder, Jack O'Halloran, Valerie Perrine, and Susannah York in Superman (1978)
Each year the Academy Awards pays tribute to those actors and industryites who died during the preceding year with a heartfelt montage sequence. This year’s In Memoriam segment unspooled with John Williams’s theme from “Superman” played by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by Gustavo Dudamel, over photos of actors, filmmakers and many others who died between March 2018 and February 2019. Although the montage usually features the most prominent names getting slightly longer clips at the end, this year’s segment didn’t follow that tradition.

Stanley Donen, the co-director of “Singin’ in the Rain” and director of “Two for the Road,” who died Saturday, was not included.

Those who were recognized included “Big” director Penny Marshall, “Deliverance” star Burt Reynolds and major filmmakers including Bernardo Bertolucci, Milos Forman, Nicolas Roeg, Neil Simon, Marvel legend Stan Lee and “Princess Bride” author William Goldman. Other prominent acting talents remembered in the montage were Albert Finney,...

Kaye Ballard Dies: TV, Film & Stage Veteran Who Starred In ‘The Mothers-In-Law’ Was 93
Kaye Ballard
Kaye Ballard, a comic actress and singer who was a regular presence on TV for decades and starred in the late-’60s NBC comedy The Mothers-in-Law, has died. Palm Springs-area paper The Desert Sun reported that the star also known for The Girl Most Likely and a half-dozen Broadway musicals died Monday at her home in Rancho Mirage.

Ballard had appeared on a couple of TV programs when she was cast as Marge opposite Jane Powell and Cliff Robertson in the 1958 big-screen musical comedy remake of The Girl Most Likely. She would appear in a handful of movies in the ensuing decades, but TV was her go-to medium.

In 1967 she starred with Eve Arden in The Mothers-in-Law, playing half of an unconventional couple, the Buells, who was best friends with their very-straight suburban neighbors the Hubbards (Arden and Herbert Rudley). The series struggled to lure viewers in its 8:30 Sunday...

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! Review
“Fly me to the moon; Let me play among the stars; Let me see what spring is like on Jupiter and Mars…”

When Kaye Ballard sang those words back in 1954, video games as we know them didn’t exist and were still many years away. However, although sixty years have passed and it’s now 2014, the song and its lyrics fit with and foreshadow one of the industry’s newest blockbusters: Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! At least as far as I’m concerned, as the song is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the game or its title.

Following in the impressive footsteps of Gearbox Software’s breakout hit, Borderlands, and its beloved sequel, Borderlands 2, The Pre-Sequel! is an interesting commodity for two reasons. First, there’s the fact that, instead of having the majority of its development handled by its series’ talented creators, the game...

'Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley': Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby and Arsenio Hall all owe a debt
Moms Mabley was the first.

She was the first black woman to headline major clubs. She was the first stand-up comedian who told stories, not one-liners, and influenced generations of comics. Yet mention her to anyone for whom the 1960s is history, not a memory, and you get a blank stare.

Whoopi Goldberg aims to correct that with "Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley" Monday, Nov. 18, on HBO.

"I would challenge anyone to find a stand-up comic that precedes her -- male or female," Goldberg tells Zap2it.

Acknowledging there were vaudeville acts before Mabley, Goldberg says, "She was a single."

And while blacks were playing the Chitlin Circuit, Mabley did that and then broke through. In 1939, Mabley became the first woman to play the Apollo Theater for $10,000 a week, an amazing achievement and salary for the time.

"I hope it imparts a little bit of info that there was someone named Moms Mabley,...

[TV] The Mothers-in-Law: The Complete Series
The Mother’s In Law was produced by Desi Arnaz and lasted for 2 seasons and 56 episodes from 1967-69. Arnaz brought in writers from I Love Lucy for this series, Madelyn Davis and Bob Carroll, Jr., as evidenced by the feel good slapstick comedy that’s present throughout. The Hubbards and the Buells are next door neighbors who consistently annoy one another, and whose lives change forever when their children suddenly get engaged. Eve Arden (recognized as the principal of Rydell High in Grease) plays Eve Hubbard, the sophisticated, proper wife of Herbert Hubbard, a lawyer. They clash with Roy and Kay Buell. Roy is a television writer and Kay is an outspoken Italian woman.

Although Kaye and Eve are quite different, and their husbands are as well, the comedy of the series comes from the four of them being placed in similar situations and in actuality, acting quite similar to one another.

Exclusive! Wesley Eure of TV's "Land of the Lost" Comes Out
For many gay and bisexual men of a certain age, the first inkling that they weren’t like other boys came on Saturday mornings from 1974 to 1976, in the form of a television show called The Land of the Lost. The show, about a father and his two children who were stranded in a mysterious land of dinosaurs, also featured vicious, but curiously slow-moving reptilian humanoids called Sleestak. Now the classic kids’ program by Sid and Marty Krofft, the producers of H.R. Pufnstuf and Sigmund and the Sea Monsters, has even been made into a feature film starring Will Ferrell, opening this Friday.

But it wasn’t just the gloriously campy-even-at-the-time nature of the show itself that appealed to gay boys. It was also the fact that it featured the role of Will, the Marshall’s handsome teenage son, played by an actor billed only as “Wesley,” but whose full name is Wesley Eure.
