Watch ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Director Gareth Edwards Discuss His May 2025 TCM Picks, Including ‘Point Blank’ and ‘Forbidden Planet’
Image
With “Jussica World Rebirth” set for release on July 2, director Gareth Edwards will add his cinematic prowess to the Turner Classic Movies schedule throughout June as part of the channel’s TCM Picks series, joining the ranks of Steve Spielberg, Guillermo del Toro and Ron Howard. Edwards told TCM that his father helped introduce him to classic cinema.

“As a kid, every week, my dad would go down the local video store and we’d bring back a classic film that he loved as a child, and he’d try to explain to me its place in cinema history,” the director said.

The director is known for his original takes on classic sci-fi tales, so he will appropriately begin his series with “Forbidden Planet” on June 5.

“You can see all the influence that this film had on the science fiction that was later to follow,” Edwards said.

The filmmaker, who helmed 2014’s “Godzilla,...

March 1 Will Be a Great Day for Godzilla Fans
Image
One of the most important Godzillamovies of the modern era is getting a brand-new streaming home, and it's completely free.

Per Tubi, 2014's Godzilla is officially joining the free streaming platform's ever-expanding library of feature films on March 1. This marks the latest in a long line of Kaiju features already available on Tubi, including the Gamera franchise, Gorogo, and the universally loathed 1998 Godzilla reboot, the latter of which is arriving on the platform the very same day.

Julius Onah explains why Brave New World features a special thanks to an acclaimed actor who does not appear in the film.

2014's Godzilla from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. was the second attempt at bringing the beloved franchise to life via North American studios since TriStar Pictures' 1998 reboot, which was instantly recognized as a low point for Godzilla as a whole.

The Monsterverse Wouldn't Exist Without This Unmade Sequel To A 1971 Godzilla Movie
Image
Were it not for a failed plan to continue the story of Godzilla vs. Hedorah, the Monsterverse may have never formed. Directed by Yoshimitsu Banno, Godzilla vs. Hedorah is best remembered for its introduction of the titular Smoke Monster, who joined a growing list of powerful Godzilla villains. In the 1971 film, the King of the Monsters found himself in a heated battle with Hedorah, a blob-shaped kaiju who came from outer space to feed on the Earth's heavily polluted ecosystem.

Despite all the trouble he gave Godzilla in the movie, Hedorah was put on the backburner for quite some time, with Toho favoring other villains - such as Mechagodzilla and Ghidorah - in the films that followed. Hedorah didn't make a return to the franchise until Godzilla: Final Wars, a film that reunited Godzilla with a slew of his old allies and enemies. Years after Hedorah's cameo, Yoshimitsu Banno tried to bring him back again,...

Making This Monster Godzilla x Kong 2's Villain Would Fulfill A Rematch Wish Godzilla's Movies Haven't Been Able To Do In 54 Years
Image
Efforts to arrange a rematch between Godzilla and Hedorah have been bungled multiple times over a period of more than 50 years now. But through the Monsterverse, a chance exists for "round two" of Godzilla vs. Hedorah to finally find life on the big screen. Due to its psychedelic energy and the titular villain's odd, blob-like appearance, 1971's Godzilla vs. Hedorah hardly feels like a top candidate for a Monsterverse adaptation, but its central concepts could translate well to its world.

Also known as the Smog Monster, Hedorah is an alien creature who feeds off pollution and one of several Godzilla villains. His hunger led it to Earth in Godzilla vs. Hedorah. And though its looks may warn of any real danger, Hedorah did prove to be a formidable opponent for Godzilla throughout the film. Even so, Godzilla vs. Hedorah ultimately killed off the monster, and he remained a one-and-done villain...

2014's Godzilla Was A Divisive Box Office Hit That Paved The Way For So Much More
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

"This isn't art. It isn't even great trash. It's a con game, and we bear the claw marks." That's what critic Rita Kempley wrote for the Washington Post in a particularly scathing review of Roland Emmerich's 1998 movie, "Godzilla." It was the first attempt by Hollywood to bring the classic monster to life in America, and it was a spectacular failure. That's what Warner Bros., Legendary, and director Gareth Edwards were working against while crafting 2014's "Godzilla." Skepticism was built in. They had to prove that a film within this franchise made outside of Japan could work.

They did that and then some.

"Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be...

Godzilla 2014 Had A Code Name That Wasn't All That Secretive
Image
Director Gareth Edwards' 2014 "Godzilla" has become a rather important movie in the history of the now 70-year-old franchise. Not only was it the first American-produced film to feature the legendary monster since 1998's disastrous attempt by Roland Emmerich, but it also kicked off Warner Bros. and Legendary's MonsterVerse, which is still going strong today. But even back then, excitement was palpable and the production had to try and keep a tight lid on things. In some cases, those were fruitless efforts.

Many films use code names during production to help throw people off the scent. For "Godzilla," the powers that be decided to refer to the movie as "Nautilus," which is seemingly a reference to the USS Nautilus. During a 2014 on-set interview conducted by Collider with one of the film's stars, Bryan Cranston, the actor was asked whether or not he says the word "Godzilla" in the film. It's then...

The Scrapped Godzilla IMAX Short That Led To The MonsterVerse
Image
Much like any other long-running franchise, "Godzilla" is filled with a great many would-be projects that never managed to see the light of day. Perhaps no scrapped project featuring the King of the Monsters is more consequential than what is most commonly known as "Godzilla 3-D." The film, which was in development in the early 2000s, was going to be a short filmed for IMAX made with American audiences in mind. It never came to be, but development of the project indirectly led to the creation of the MonsterVerse franchise, which kicked off with 2014's "Godzilla" and is still going strong today.

So, how do we go from theatrically-released short film to blockbuster-sized, American-produced theatrical feature? It's an odd, messy journey, and one that is a little heartbreaking in some ways for both fans and one of the franchise's most unique directors. Namely, Yoshimitsu Banno, who helmed 1971's "Godzilla vs. Hedorah,...

10 Canceled Godzilla Movies We Really Wish Had Happened
Image
Despite the massive success of the Godzilla franchise, Toho Studios has completely abandoned or, at the very least, implemented ideas from scrapped movies into future projects since the franchise's debut. Beginning with the 1954 anti-war classic, Godzilla, Toho Studios has developed a reputation for creating some of the most innovative and exciting monster movies, also known as kaiju films, with each one being distinct for its sense of humor, thematic musings about society and humanity, or for their sheer spectacle. However, despite the Godzilla franchise dominating the kaiju genre for nearly seven decades, Toho Studios has scrapped many interesting ideas for numerous reasons.

The different timelines featured in Godzilla have seen Godzilla battle creatures comprising Japanese experiments gone wrong, alien-like monsters with incredible powers, and even clones of himself, but Toho Studios has thrown curveballs in an effort to keep the franchise fresh. While the string of Godzilla projects that have...

Godzilla Vs. Kong Has a Brutal 18-Minute Monster Fight Scene
Image
It turns out that Godzilla vs. Kong may be even more epic than we previously expected. Epic enough to contain at least one battle between the two legendary monsters that lasts nearly 20 minutes. This, according to composer Junkie Xl, who recently discussed the scene in question, which takes place, at least in part, on an aircraft carrier.

Junkie Xl composed the music for Godzilla Vs Kong, which arrives next month. The musician recently appeared on the Film Junkee Vodka Stream and discussed the movie a bit. While not revealing too much, he explained that a recently revealed clip, which previewed the battle between King Kong and Godzilla, was just the tip of the iceberg. Here's what he had to say about it.

"I'm not going to say how this thing ends but there's some spectacular...and then so, this scene that was released today, was it on IGN? Forty seconds of footage?...

Film Review: Gamera vs. Zigra (1971) by Noriaki Yuasa
Image
With bankruptcy looming over, Daiei decided to release one more Gamera movie to cash in on the giant turtle’s popularity. The budget was to be the same as the “Gamera vs. Jiger” but the plot, a return to the more child-friendly alien installments like “Gamera vs. Viras” or “Gamera vs. Guiron.” This couldn’t save Daiei Film and the company went bankrupt soon after the July release of the flick, forcing another to distribute the recently released movie. As a result, “Gamera vs. Zigra” turned out being the last Gamera film in a very long time if we don’t count the disastrous “Gamera: Super Monsters” from 1980.

A shark-shaped spaceship kidnaps a buggy from the surface of the Moon. On Earth, the same sentient ship kidnaps two marine biologists and their children, Kenichi (Yasushi Sakagami) and Helen (Gloria Zoellner) who are on an expedition to research about ocean pollution.

EW also mentions that humans haven't seen Godzilla since the end of the first movie, although that will likely change once other colossal creatures make themselves known to the world, including the flying Rodan, whom Dougherty...

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Next Godzilla Film And Tag Movie Begin Production
Following the global success of 2014’s “Godzilla” and this year’s “Kong: Skull Island,” comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse: an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history.

The film, which began principal photography on June 19, is being directed by Michael Dougherty (“Krampus”), and stars Oscar nominees Vera Farmiga (“Up in the Air,” “The Conjuring” films), and Ken Watanabe (“The Last Samurai”) and Sally Hawkins (“Blue Jasmine”), both reprising their “Godzilla” roles; Kyle Chandler (“The Wolf of Wall Street,” “Manchester by the Sea”); Millie Bobby Brown (“Stranger Things”) in her feature film debut; Bradley Whitford (“Get Out”); Thomas Middleditch (HBO’s “Silicon Valley”); Charles Dance (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”); O’Shea Jackson Jr. (“Straight Outta Compton”); Aisha Hinds (“Star Trek Into Darkness”); and Golden Globe nominee Zhang Ziyi (“Memoirs of a Geisha,” “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”).

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

Dougherty directs from a script he wrote with Zach Shields. The film is being produced by Mary Parent, Alex Garcia, Brian Rogers and Thomas Tull, with Barry H. Waldman, Zach Shields, Yoshimitsu Banno and Kenji Okuhira serving as executive producers and Alexandra Mendes co-producing for Legendary.

Behind the scenes, Dougherty’s creative team includes director of photography Lawrence Sher, whose past credits include “War Dogs” and “Godzilla,” for which he handled additional photography; production designer Scott Chambliss (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Star Trek Into Darkness”); editor Roger Barton (“Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales,” the “Transformers” films); costume designer Louise Migenbach (the “X-Men” and “Hangover” films); and Oscar-winning VFX supervisor Guillaume Rocheron (“Godzilla,” “Ghost in the Shell,” and part of the Oscar-winning team behind “Life of Pi ”).

Filming is taking place mainly in Atlanta, Georgia. A presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures, the film is currently scheduled for release in March 2019, and will be distributed in 3D and 2D and in select IMAX theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, except in Japan, where it will be distributed by Toho Co., Ltd.

Meanwhile, Tag! You’re It!

Production begins this week on location in Atlanta for the new comedy “Tag,” directed by Jeff Tomsic (Comedy Central’s “Broad City”) for New Line Cinema. The film’s starring ensemble cast is led by Ed Helms (The “Hangover” movies, “We’re the Millers”), Jake Johnson (TV’s “New Girl”), and Hannibal Buress (“Neighbors”), with Jon Hamm (“Baby Driver,” TV’s “Mad Men”) and Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker, “The Town”).

For one month every year, five highly competitive friends hit the ground running in a no-holds-barred game of tag they’ve been playing since the first grade—risking their necks, their jobs and their relationships to take each other down with the battle cry “You’re It!” This year, the game coincides with the wedding of their only undefeated player, which should finally make him an easy target. But he knows they’re coming…and he’s ready. Based on a true story, “Tag” shows how far some guys will go to be the last man standing.

The film also stars Annabelle Wallis (“The Mummy”), Rashida Jones (TV’s “Parks and Recreation”), Isla Fisher (“Now You See Me”) and Leslie Bibb (“Iron Man 2”).

Tomsic directs from a screenplay written by Mark Steilen (TV’s “Mozart in the Jungle”) and Rob McKittrick (“Waiting”), based on the Wall Street Journal article entitled “It Takes Planning, Caution to Avoid Being It.” The film is produced by Todd Garner, Mark Steilen and Sean Robins, with Hans Ritter serving as executive producer. The creative filmmaking team includes director of photography Larry Blanford, editor Josh Crockett, production designer David Sandefur, and costume designer Denise Wingate.

“Tag” is set for a June 29, 2018, release.
