Huffman will appear in the second season of the Paramount+ continuation of the CBS series as a new character named Dr. Jill Gideon, the ex-wife of Jason Gideon.

It’s only been two years since “Criminal Minds” ended, but the long-running procedural is already heading back to the small screen. “Criminal Minds: Evolution,” the Paramount+ sequel series to the FBI drama, will receive a special broadcast airing of its premiere on CBS, where the original show ran for 15 seasons, on November 24. That’s Thanksgiving Day, should your family want to watch serial killers after eating the turkey.

The “Criminal Minds” Behavioral Analysis Unit is back in the upcoming revival series, “Criminal Minds: Evolution.”

The crime drama series follows Bau’s elite profilers as they face a mysterious antagonist, an UnSub who used the pandemic to build a network of serial killers. When the network is set in motion, the team must bring down their greatest threat, one murderer at a time.

Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, A.J. Cook, Paget Brewster, Aisha Tyler and Adam Rodriguez star as their characters from “Criminal Minds,” while Zach Gilford and Josh Stewart appear as recurring roles.

CBS’ original “Criminal Minds” series, which ran from 2005 to 2020, followed the Bau squad as they investigated and analyzed the nation’s most dangerous serial killers and individual crimes. Matthew Gray Gubler and Daniel Henney — who played Dr. Spencer Reid and Special Agent Matt Simmons, respectively — are not yet confirmed to appear in the reboot.

Paramount+ is betting Criminal Minds fans will feel like relaxing in front of the TV after feasting on turkey or whatever it is they consume on Thanksgiving. The streaming service has officially set a Thanksgiving Day premiere day for the rebirth of Criminal Minds.

Criminal Minds: Evolution will launch with two episodes streaming on Thursday, November 24, 2022. Per Paramount+, the new season will consist of 10 episodes, with the mid-season finale scheduled for Thursday, December 15th. After taking a break for the winter holidays, Evolution returns on Thursday, January 12, 2023.

“We never wanted to go away to begin with,” Showrunner Erica Messer told reporters Wednesday during the Television Critics Tour. She also ran the series when it was on CBS before it was canceled after 15 seasons in 2020. “We knew there were plenty of stories to tell. You can fill behind the scenes is a show is lagging, or creatively the scripts aren’t hitting. That never happened to us.”

The announcement was made by series showrunner Erica Messer during a panel for Paramount+’s virtual Television Critics Association (TCA) day.

“Criminal Minds: Evolution” was ordered to series in July and was first reported as being in development in early 2021. It will see the return of original cast members Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Adam Rodriguez and Paget Brewster. Zach Gilford will also appear in a season-long recurring guest star role. The show will blend serialized storytelling with the procedural format of the original series.

The reboot of Criminal Minds for what will be its 16th season now has an official title. After taking a couple of years off, the popular drama returns with a new title – Criminal Minds: Evolution – and a new home on Paramount+.

The title announcement included details on the plot as well as the news that Zach Gilford (Midnight Mass) is joining season 16 as a recurring guest star. Per Paramount+, Gilford will play “Elias Voit, an operations analyst for a global cyber-security firm who has a dark side and obsession with death.”

Returning original cast members include Joe Mantegna, A.J. Cook, Kirsten Vangsness, Aisha Tyler, Adam Rodriguez, and Paget Brewster. The series also brought back Criminal Minds‘ Erica Messer as a writer, executive producer, and showrunner. Writer Breen Frazier, writer Christopher Barbour, director Glenn Kershaw, and Mark Gordon are also serving as executive producers.

The series has cast Zach Gilford (Friday Night Lights, Midnight Mass) in a key recurring role. The revival of the long-running CBS crime drama has also added a subtitle and will be known as Criminal Minds: Evolution.

Paramount+ gave a series order to the revival in July. Six long-time members of the show’s cast — Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler and Paget Brewster — and showrunner Erica Messer are on board for Evolution, while former regulars Matthew Gray Gubler and Daniel Henney won’t return.

Updated with Paramount+ confirmation, additional details: After more than a year of on- and off- dealmaking, Paramount+ on Thursday confirmed it has ordered to series a Criminal Minds revival starring six fan favorite cast members, Joe Mantegna, Kirsten Vangsness, Adam Rodriguez, A.J. Cook, Aisha Tyler and Paget Brewster. As we previously reported, also back is the series’ longtime executive producer/showrunner Erica Messer who closed her deal to return earlier a couple of months ago. The actors’ contracts had been contingent on Messer signing a pact with ABC Signature where she is under an overall deal.

As Deadline reported exclusively, by February, Criminal Minds studios ABC Signature and CBS Studios had reached a license agreement with Paramount+ for a 10-episode new season of Criminal Minds. The last several months were spent getting Messer and the cast officially on board, triggering a formal green light, with production slated to begin Aug.
