More than 400 prominent female writers and showrunners sent a letter today to the heads of the major studios expressing their “grave concerns” about the companies’ “lack of specific production protocols” to protect their workers in anti-abortion states.
The letters, which state that “it is unacceptable to ask any person to choose between their human rights and their employment,” also demanded that the companies “pledge to discontinue all political donations to anti-abortion candidates and political action committees immediately.”
Deadline has obtained a copy of the letter to Netflix, which organizers say was sent to top executives at Amazon Studios, AMC Networks, Apple, Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal, Netflix, Paramount Global, , and Warner Bros. Discovery.
The letters, whose signers include Ava DuVernay, Shonda Rhimes, Amy Schumer, Marta Kauffman, Callie Khouri, WGA West vice president Michele Mulroney and WGA West secretary-treasurer Betsy Thomas, said that “this situation raises basic matters of equality, health, and safety in the workplace.

The Brady organization against gun violence is calling on Hollywood writers, directors and producers to examine onscreen gun violence and depictions of gun safety, asking the creative community to sign a pledge that’s already garnered more than 200 signatures of such names as Judd Apatow, Shonda Rhimes, Damon Lindelof and Jimmy Kimmel and the writers of Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The pledge, while noting that the “responsibility lies with lax gun laws supported by those politicians more afraid of losing power than saving lives,” acknowledges that “America’s storytellers” have the power to “effect change.”
“Cultural attitudes toward smoking, drunk driving, seatbelts and marriage equality have all evolved due in large part to movies’ and TV’s influence. It’s time to take on gun safety,” the Brady pledge states, and goes on to ask writers, directors and producers to, whenever possible, to:

Hollywood has come together to make a change over the portrayal of gun violence onscreen.
Judd Apatow, Mark Ruffalo, Jimmy Kimmel, Damon Lindelof, Adam McKay, Julianne Moore, Shonda Rhimes, Eli Roth, Mark Ruffalo, Amy Schumer, and John Glickman are among the first round of signatures for a petition calling for the film and TV industry to re-examine its influence on national gun violence in the U.S.
The petition, titled “Open Letter to Our Colleagues in the Creative Community,” calls for studios to model responsible gun safety practices in productions and curb portrayals of guns in scenes involving children. The effort, led by activists Christy Callahan, the co-chair of the Brady United Against Gun Violence organization’s Regional Leadership Council, and Robert Bowers Disney, comes after the Uvalde elementary school mass shooting on May 24.
“Considering there have been over 250 other mass shootings so far this year, it’s an almost incomprehensible tragedy.

There will not be a third season of Raising Dion. Series star Sammi Haney, who played Esperanza on the Michael B. Jordan-produced superhero drama, revealed the news Tuesday on Instagram and it was confirmed by Netflix.
“Sad to say that Raising Dion is Canceled [sic], Haney wrote. “Thank you for all of the amazing support we got from all of our wonderful fans! Season 2 was a success, equal to Season 1, even if just looking at how many people watched all of it and wanted a season 3!”
Based on the comic book by Dennis Liu, Raising Dion followed the story of Nicole (Alisha Wainwright) and her son Dion (Young) after Dion starts to manifest several mysterious, superhero-like abilities. Two years after defeating the Crooked Man (Jason Ritter), Season 2 follows Dion as he continues honing his powers with the support of his mom and Tevin (Rome Flynn), his Biona trainer who catches Nicole’s eye.

Dion will continue to be raised at Netflix.
The streamer has confirmed Raising Dion has been picked up for a sophomore run mere days after it was announced it was one of the 10 Most Popular Series on Netflix.
Even more promising is that it was named the Most Popular Kids & Family Series release of 2019.
Generally, Netflix makes renewal or cancellation decisions after looking at 28-day viewing data, meaning that most renewals come around one month after shows debut.
With Raising Dion premiering October 4, it was somewhat concerning that the show's fate remained up in the air into the beginning of 2020.
As of now, the second season is slated to span eight one-hour episodes, down from Season 1's 9 episode order.
Carol Barbee will continue to serve as Showrunner for the sophomore run, while Michael B. Jordan, Kenny Goodman, Kim Roth, Dennis Liu, and Charles D. King’s MacRo will return as Executive Producers.

The Taiwanese-American film producer Dennis Liu was intimately aware of the lack of diversity in Hollywood, and of the difficulties people of color faced in getting their projects greenlit. That’s why, after coming up with the idea for Raising Dion, he created a one-issue comic and a two-minute short film to drum up interest for a live-action adaptation in 2015. The idea soon caught on, and what resulted from Liu’s unconventional marketing is Netflix’s nine-episode Raising Dion, written by Carol Barbee and directed by Liu himself.

Expecting inference from a kid bingeing on Netflix may be too much to ask, and on just about every level, “Raising Dion” refuses to let any mystery be. Take the opening sequence, which isn’t so much the first scene of the series as a preview of scenes to come later on, like one of those mini-teasers that runs right before the full trailer on YouTube or Twitter. It’s not a flash-forward — there’s no effort to connect it to the characters’ reality — it’s just a promise that if you’re bored or confused for even a second, don’t worry: There’s an explanation or explosion just around the corner.

“People with powers are either heroes or villains,” Dion Warren explains to a new friend. Dion would know. Not only does he have superpowers — the abilities to, among other things, move objects with his mind, teleport, and heal the sick — but at age seven going on eight, he sees the world with a simple morality in which everyone is good or bad, heroes or villains. And Dion’s mom Nicole has raised him to be a sweet kid who of course can only imagine himself as a hero.

Netflix can’t go without a plethora of America’s current favorite genre for long. Superhero stories resonate with wide audiences for several reasons, mainly because in a world that feels increasingly out of control, all of us want to see justice enacted, for good to overcome evil, and for someone that resembles a regular person like us become a better, more powerful, and more altruistic version of themselves.

A detail on “Raising Dion,” Netflix’s new family drama about a boy with remarkable abilities, signals quite how far the streamer’s ambitions for this show might extend. Jason Ritter’s character Pat, a geek immersed in comic book lore and thus the person on this show best able to understand the story he finds himself in, has a cell phone ring tone that sounds awfully familiar. First up is a sci-fi series for Netflix called “Raising Dion,” centered around an adorable 8-year-old boy who loves science and superheroes and soon discovers his own superhuman powers. Jordan makes a brief cameo as the boy’s father in the newly released trailer, which looks like a family-friendly fantasy drama about a baby mutant.

Netflix series Raising Dion is a uniquely family-driven sci-fi story about woman raising a super-powered young son.
Raising Dion is another superhero series that’s joining Netflix’s original content; a lineup recently stemmed after across-the-board cancellations of its Marvel shows. However, this 10-episode serial genre offering has a major ace up its sleeve with a co-star who's one today's hottest box office draws, Michael B. Jordan.
An adaptation of the 2015 short film and comic book of the same name created by Dennis Liu and illustrated by Jason Piperberg, Raising Dion depicts the innately unconventional parenting task of a widowed African-American woman, whose 7-year-old son Dion possesses an array of potent superpowers. Yet, despite its fantastical premise, the focus rests more on the realistic implications that one would have when raising a child who has a normal sense of wonder and mischief, but happens to possess incredibly dangerous abilities.

"UnREAL" -- Lifetime's insightful dramedy about a dating show that is not openly "The Bachelor," but is totally "The Bachelor" -- will do in its second season what "The Bachelor" has not managed to do in 20 seasons: Cast a black man as the lead.
Season 2 doesn't start until this summer, but it already sounds like it's going to hit every mark the ABC series carefully avoids. "UnREAL" co-creator and executive producer Sarah Gertrude Shapiro -- a real-life former "Bachelor" producer -- told Entertainment Weekly that Season 2 will take on race with the introduction of a black man as the "Everlasting" bachelor, and continue to explore gender issues as Shiri Appleby's Rachel and Constance Zimmer's Quinn continue their "female Breaking Bad."
"The first season was really about the princess fantasy, and this idea that we're all intoxicated by the idea that one guy can show up and change your life.
