Image
December was a great year for Netflix, as it premiered many popular titles. Among them, it was a disaster miniseries that became a huge streaming success.

The polarizing miniseries La Palma debuted on the platform on Dec. 12. Only five weeks later, after enjoying several weeks in Netflix's Top 10, La Palma joined a prestigious list: the Top 10 Most Popular Non-English Shows. The series is currently in eighth place. This comes after the Norwegian miniseries was the fifth most-watched series between the week of Dec. 19 and Dec. 25 on all streaming platforms.

Netflix's Polarizing New Disaster Series Is a Streaming Success

Netflix’s La Palma is trending on a new TV ratings chart, despite having a less-than-stellar 28% audience score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The Norwegian disaster drama reached fifth place the week of Dec. 19 through Dec. 25, 2024, on Reelgood, which tracks audience interest, per Screen Rant.

Reelgood’s top five list also includes: Paramount+’s Dexter: Original Sin, Apple TV+’s Shrinking, and The Agency from Showtime. The top spot for the week of Dec. 19 to 25 went to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone.

New Netflix Disaster Show Climbs Streaming Chart Despite 29% Audience Score
Image
Netflix's latest disaster show is trending on a new streaming chart despite a weak reception from audiences. Stories of disaster, both real and fictional, have tended to find an audience on Netflix. Society of the Snow, from director J.J. Bayona, was the third most-watched Netflix film for the first half of 2024. The drama unfolds in 1972, focusing on the true story of a Uruguayan rugby team's experience in 1972 and their ordeal after a flight crashed in the Andes Mountains.

Under Paris was also not too far behind as the fourth most-watched film during that same period. Directed by Xavier Gens, who wrote the script with Yannick Dahan, Maud Heywang, Yaël Langmann and Olivier Torres, the French film centered on a grieving marine biologist who has to save Paris from a giant shark. As the new year begins, though, a miniseries, with only four episodes, is showing signs of success.

Netflix’s La Palma Isn’t Based On A True Story But Follows Some Real Events
Image
La Palma, directed by Kasper Barfoed, made us aware of the volcanic eruption that occurred in the northwestern part of the Canary Islands and caused widespread damage to life and property. The volcanic eruption shown in the series did happen in real life, though the story is entirely fictional. The makers have taken creative liberties and weaved an imaginary narrative around some real-life events. So, let’s find out how much of what is shown in the series happened in real life, if the authorities were at fault, and if climate change had any role to play.

As stated in each and every episode of La Palma, an eruption occurred in 1949 in a region called Cumbre Vieja. The series called the region a ticking time bomb, which, according to a few researchers and geologists, is not true. Yes, it was speculated by experts that there was a threat of a...

‘La Palma’ Recap (Episodes 1-4) Explained: Are Alvaro And Haukur Dead?
Image
Directed by Kasper Barfoed, La Palma makes you privy to what happens when we take nature for granted. I won’t say that the narrative of the Netflix miniseries is entirely unique or something the likes of which you have never seen, but it will definitely keep you entertained all the way through. I would have liked it if the makers had laid more stress on the climate change angle and hit people hard about the consequences of exploiting the flora and fauna of a specific place. That said, let’s find out what happened in the series and what kind of natural calamity hit the scenic island of La Palma.

Spoiler Alert

What was happening in La Palma?

At the beginning of the series, we saw that a boat carrying a group of tourists met with an accident on Bonita Beach. There was an eruption of gas, and it...

‘The Nurse’ (2023) Recap & Ending, Explained: How Did Pernille Prove Christina’s Crimes?
Image
True-crime stories are always the most interesting genre. A documentary, movie, or television show made in this genre is an embodiment of truth being stranger than fiction because not many of us are aware of what is going on in our vicinity. Unless there is a lot of noise made about something wrong happening, many crimes will go unnoticed. The Nurse is one such example of a limited series based on the true crime genre. Directed by Kasper Barfoed, this Danish Netflix original is all about a woman trying to unearth a supposed crime being carried out under the nose of her workplace administration. How will she get to the bottom of it, and will she confront the person who is carrying out the crime?

It is the year 2012. Arne, an elderly gentleman, returns home only to feel dizzy, and he faints. His brother Kenny immediately takes him to the...

‘The Nurse’ (2023) Review: A Solid Retelling Of True Events About A Nurse Who Stood Up To Medical Crimes
Image
True crime stories are always intriguing to watch. It takes the actual event from several years ago and presents it in a manner that would help us understand what exactly happened when the incident occurred. It takes us through details that many did not bother to know about. The Nurse, a Danish Netflix Original limited series, gives us a gripping tale of a woman who gathered the courage to bring a disturbing pattern of incidents that is happening in her place of work to everyone’s attention. Will she bear the brunt of speaking the truth?

The Nurse starts from the year 2012 in Nykøbing Falster, Denmark. An elderly gentleman named Arne faints in his home, and he is admitted to the Nykøbing Falster emergency ward. Arne is slowly recovering, and he is told that he will be discharged the very next day. But on the night before his discharge, someone...

‘The Nurse’ (2023). Netflix Series: Another version of the same story
Image
The Nurse is a Danish series directed by Kasper Barfoed starring Fanny Louise Bernth and Josephine Park.

As it begins, it warns us: “based on real events” and it seems that what happened in The Good Nurse (with Jessica Chastain) is not the exclusive patrimony of Americans, and now we get this Danish version of a very similar story, but with very different protagonists and setting.

The Nurse About the Series

Four chapters very well executed, following the (television) rhythm properly and rigorously fulfilling the parameters that a movie “based on real events” requires. Do not expect eccentricity in the narrative or characters that are out of the ordinary, there is no story that surprises us by its originality or comes, ultimately, to tell us anything new.

Very different from The Good Nurse in rhythm and setting. The Nurse, much closer to the TV movie, much more “realistic” than the...

“We had a great year,” Jenny Stjernströmer Björk, VP of Nordic Content at Netflix, said when asked about the streamer’s 2022 Nordic efforts on stage at the Grand Theater in Göteborg.

Björk went on to list what she described as some of the streamer’s most successful Nordic content, including the Swedish series Snabba Cash. The experienced exec also cited the Spotify origins series The Playlist, and Roar Uthaug’s folklore thriller Troll, which Björk said became the most popular non-English language film on Netflix in less than two weeks of its release.

The Numbers Station is Only Partially Developed: A Movie Review
*full disclosure: a Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by Image Entertainment. Director: Kasper Barfoed. Writer: F. Scott Frazier. Cast: John Cusack, Malin Akerman and Liam Cunningham. The Numbers Stationis the latest film to receive a limited theatrical before moving to home video formats. This title was released in June of 2013 (DVD, Blu-Ray). And, the film stars John Cusack and Malin Akerman. Essentially, The Numbers Station is an indie thriller, from first time screenwriter F. Scott Frazier. The film is light on characters and the use of diverse sets. This title also offers character development in sparing portions. Yet, The Numbers Station still manages to be a solid thriller, despite a few drawbacks. The story for the film stays with Emerson (Cusack) and Katherine (Akerman). Both characters are CIA agents and they are assigned to a remote outpost in Suffolk, England. Here, they cloak orders for other CIA agents with ciphers.

The Numbers Station Review
No one gives world-weary like John Cusack. He wears his ennui with as much panache as his Ramones tees and those fabulous coats. Projects in search of an artist of a certain age – who can shoulder a burden of despair with a wry grin – need look no further than the tip of his quiff for their man.

Emerson Kent is the quintessential Cusack role – conflicted, tormented and ever so slightly beautiful. The field agent has been semi-retired by the agency after developing a conscience during an operation clean up. Too cool for Ptsd he instead lets the incident eat him up inside and wearily accepts an assignment in the English countryside babysitting a codebreaker as she sends encrypted shortwave transmissions out into the world. The new assignment is a conspicuous bone tossed at Emerson by his bemused boss (Liam Cunningham), intended to keep him on the payroll but limiting any...

"The Numbers Station" Forgets to Develop One of Its Two Characters
When a thriller primarily revolves around two characters in a confined space fighting for their lives, special care needs to be taken to give the audience background on who they are if the stakes on whether they survive are to have any impact at all. Kasper Barfoed's The Numbers Station only manages to make us care about one half of its two-protagonist plot, and consequently what could have been a riveting and involving character study of trauma bringing two otherwise distant people together just ends up being a predictable distraction that's never too involving. John Cusack gives one of his better understated performances in years, but Malin Akerman is largely underserved with an almost complete lack of character development by a script that instead makes her more of a plot device than an actual human being.

The Numbers Station Blu-Ray Review
Kasper Barfoed’s The Numbers Station is John Cusack’s latest failed attempt at becoming an action star. The film’s main plot is a complicated mess, while the underlying character work proves to be semi-interesting thanks to Cusack and co-star Malin Akerman. Still, The Numbers Station rarely stretches past straight-to-dvd material due to its obvious budgetary restraints and inability to deliver a character arc that we haven’t seen done a million times before. Cusack tries and tries, but ultimately nothing adds up as the film slips into mediocrity.

Emerson (John Cusack) is a former black ops soldier turned glorified security guard for a top secret numbers base. His coworker Katherine (Malin Akerman) is in charge of sending a secret batch of coded numbers to various agents in the field and it’s Emerson’s job to make sure that the codes get sent and that the base is protected at all times.

Film Review: ‘The Numbers Station’ Feels Made by a Computer
Chicago – John Cusack’s new spy thriller is so routine, predictable, and dull that they could have called it “By-the-Numbers Station”. Too easy? How about “Paint-by-Numbers Station”? Ok, I’ll stop now before @FakeShalit comes after me. “The Numbers Station,” now available On Demand and opening in Chicago this Friday, isn’t an awful film (it’s better than Cusack’s last dud, “The Factory”) but it’s a remarkably boring one. Co-star Malin Akerman does her best to try and add some character but director Kasper Barfoed can’t figure out the tone of this non-action spy movie and Cusack looks visibly bored. If someone had a camera on you while you were watching it, you would look the same way.

Rating: 2.0/5.0

Casting against type, Cusack plays a CIA Black Ops agent named Emerson Kent. After an innocent bystander witnesses Kent performing a “job” and asks him why he’s doing it,...

The Numbers Station (2013) Movie Review
Those crazy CIA guys and their murderous CIA ways. If you watch enough Hollywood movies, you’d swear that 90% of all deaths around the world can be attributed to the CIA and their legion of black ops killers, such as John Cusack’s Emerson in director Kasper Barfoed’s “The Numbers Station”. Natural disasters? Meteorites from outer space? Psst. Not even close. Emerson is no Jason Bourne, of course, but he’s pretty badass in his own right, though he makes the mistake of developing a conscience early in the film. In case you were wondering, that’s not a good thing for a guy who takes such pride in his ability to murder people for mom, country, and apple pie that he demands his partners “start the count” every time he goes off to do some murderin’. After he flubs a job because of that whole conscience thing, Emerson...

Two Clips and a Featurette for John Cusack’s The Numbers Station
John Cusack’s spy actioner “The Numbers Station” opens April 26, 2013, though Image Entertainment already has the movie scheduled to hit DVD and Blu-ray a month later on May 28, 2013. A one-month window from theatrical release to DVD/Blu-ray? That makes me think the film isn’t going to get all that wide of a release come April 26th, but hey, I could be wrong. In any case, if you’re looking forward to watching John Cusack back in the ass kicking saddle, then Kasper Barfoed’s “The Numbers Station” is probably what you’re looking for. Sure, it’s a tad generic, what with the whole evil CIA conspiracy angle and everything. Kinda old hat after four “Bourne” movies, don’t you think? But in case you haven’t gotten enough of this plot yet, check out two clips and a featurette for “The Numbers Station”. After his latest mission goes disastrously wrong,...

Stranger Than Fiction: The Airwaves Are Filled with Coded Spy Messages
Thanks to decades of being conditioned by TV shows and movies like those in the Mission: Impossible and James Bond franchises, we often assume that real spy organizations like Britain's MI6, Russia's Gru or our own CIA use only the most advanced technology in their efforts to clandestinely collect, alalyze and disseminate intelligence.

Organizations like these do, in fact, utilize cutting edge computer programs, robots, drones, lasers and satellites, as well as more esoteric devices like microwave-emitting "death rays" and acoustic weapons that fire "sound bullets," but it appears that they're also still using a form of technology that had its heydey back when the first passenger jets were just taking flight and Doo-wop was all the rage. Broadcasting into the airwaves from places unknown are long, sometimes continual, strings of numbers, letters, words and tones that anyone with a shortwave radio can intercept, but which only the spies who...

First Trailer & Poster for The Numbers Station with John Cusack & Malin Åkerman
The Numbers Station marks Danish director Kasper Barfoed’s English language debut, and he’s assembled a brilliant leading cast with which to do it in the form of John Cusack (High Fidelity) and Malin Åkerman (Watchmen).

The thriller will be arriving in Us theatres this spring, and now Yahoo Movies have debuted the first trailer and poster, giving us our first look at the film.

“After his latest mission goes disastrously wrong, veteran CIA black ops agent Emerson Kent is given one last chance to prove he still has what it takes to do his job. Watch: The Numbers Station Theatrical Trailer
The project has been in development since September of 2010 and now the first trailer is available for director Kasper Barfoed’s The Numbers Station. John Cusack took on the roleof an ex-cia black-ops agent when original star/producer Ethan Hawke dropped out from the first American effort from Danish filmmaker Barfoed, which also stars smokey-eyed actress Malin Akerman (who worked with Cage in Stolen) as a code operator. The script penned by video game producer–turned-screenwriter F. Scott Frazier follows a skilled-yet-disgraced black-ops agent Emerson Kent (Cusack) who is put on simple bodyguard duty for a woman named Katherine (Akerman) working at a secret CIA broadcast base...

‘The Numbers Station’ Trailer Needs John Cusack and Malin Ackerman to Save the World
Everybody keeps shooting at John Cusack. To get them to stop, he and Malin Ackerman are going to have to crack a long string of numbers because, as we all know, the left side of the brain is the sexiest. In The Numbers Station, Cusack plays a dishonored black ops agent who is biding time protecting Ackerman’s character as she works at a numbers station in the middle of nowhere. She’ll be glad to have him, though, when the station comes under attack and a plan to kill some important world figures gets set in motion. This action thriller has been a long time in the making (Ethan Hawke was first attached to it back in 2010), and it represents a test for some newcomers. The first is screenwriter F. Scott Frazier, who has nailed down some work since, but who will see his first script sale finally emerge on the big screen here. The...

The Numbers Station Trailer Starring John Cusack and Malin Akerman
The Bourne influence is still being felt in Hollywood as there is no shortage of modern spy movies being produced as of late. Here's another one that stars John Cusack as a CIA black ops agent who is assigned to protect a "Numbers Station" where top secret messages are encrypted and transmitted. Malin Akerman plays a cryptographer who comes under fire when the station is targeted by an unknown enemy. The Numbers Station is directed by Danish director Kasper Barfoed and written by first-time screenwriter F. Scott Frazier (who apparently used to be a video game Qa guy for Thq). The movie looks like it is bordering on direct-to-video territory (and based on Cusack's recent output, it could go either way), but the idea of these stations being used to pass messages is at least somewhat interesting. The Numbers Station hits select theatres on April 26th; check out the trailer...
