This Bizarro MTV Short Film Was Turned Into The Network's First Movie
Image
MTV was best known for its music videos, of course, but credit should be given for its initiative in promoting and exhibiting short films. In between its Missing Persons videos and "Weird Al" Yankovic videos, the channel would present the (often strange) art of rising filmmakers and animators, just to add some variety to its 24-hour programming. It wasn't uncommon to turn on MTV in 1991 and see full-bore live-action short and bizarro animated bumpers in between blocks of music videos. Many new artists found their toehold within the cracks. Eventually, MTV launched "Liquid Television" as a showcase for its animated ventures, with its live-action shorts remaining randomly scattered throughout.

John Payson's live-action short film "Joe's Apt." first debuted on MTV in 1992, and it caught everyone's eye, mostly because it was kinda gross. In the short, Mark Rosenthal played Joe, an average dude living in a filthy New York apartment...

Fantasia 2018 Review: The Witch In The Window Terrifies and Surprises
I haven't yet seen director/writer/editor/composer Andy Mitton's previous two features, We Go On and Yellowbrickroad, but having watched his new film The Witch in the Window (formerly known as The Vermont House) at Fantasia 2018, I'm going to have to rectify that as soon as possible. The story follows New York City denizen and middle-aged dad Simon (Alex Draper) as he picks up his son Finn (Charlie Tacker) from his estranged wife Beverly (Arija Bareikis). The goal is to fix up a house in the middle of nowhere, Vermont, get Finn away from the Internet and city life, and to bond with some quality father-son time. Problem, is the fixer-upper in the countryside already has a resident of the permanent kind, Lydia. The issue with most haunted house...

'Purge 3' Is Happening with Original Director James DeMonaco
Rhys Wakefield in The Purge (2013)
After writing and directing back-to-back low-budget hits with last year's The Purge and this summer's The Purge: Anarchy, filmmaker James DeMonaco has been set to write The Purge 3, with an eye to direct as well.

No story details were given, but the first two movies were set during the annual "purge," a 12-hour period where all crime in America is legal, including murder. Sebastien Lemercier will return to produce, alongside Blumhouse Prodcution's Jason Blum and Platinum Dunes' Michael Bay, Bradley Fuller and Andrew Form.

Here's what James DeMonaco had to say about the franchise in a statement to Deadline.

The Purge 2 Moves Forward at Universal Pictures
Rhys Wakefield in The Purge (2013)
Following a very successful opening weekend at the box office, Universal Pictures is moving forward with a sequel to The Purge. Jason Blum is returning to produce the follow-up, although no cast members have been confirmed.

The sequel has already gotten conditional approval for a $2.25 million tax credit through California's Film and Television Tax Credit program. However, in order to secure this credit, shooting must begin by the end of this year, at the latest, and the production must meet several other requirements.

The Purge starred Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey as parents in a gated community who try to survive the annual event known as The Purge, where all crime is legal for a 12-hour period. James DeMonaco wrote and directed this thriller, but it isn't known if he will return to the helm.

The Purge was produced on a budget of just $3 million, so, with a $2.25 million credit waiting in the wings,...

Todd Gilchrist sat down with the star and producer recently, and you can see what they both had to say in our exclusive video interview.

Their stated goal is to uphold the law of the land and put the bad guys behind bars, but every TV fan knows that our favorite small-screen cops, detectives, and agents — as well as their colleagues who semi-officially serve in crime-fighting capacities — have a duty to increase pulses and raise the temperatures of whatever rooms they enter.

That is right! But, luckily there is a super cute fellow kindergarten teacher, Veronica (Margarita Levieva). And, well, I think we all know exactly where the story goes from here... But it is how it gets there that is pretty darn fantastic. Jonathan Sollis, for one, is excellent as Zoe. Lucy Liu Joins Southland Lapd
Lucy Liu has joined the fourth season TNT’s Southland in a recurring role and every person on the planet who’s attracted to female skin just drooled simultaneously. Wait, that was just me? Well this just got awkward fast. The Charlie’s Angel star will be playing an officer in the Los Angeles Police Department, but that’s all the juicy details we get for now. Any guesses what her character will be like? I love to let my imagination run wild when attempting to figure someone’s role on a show. Maybe Liu will be a dirty cop trying to bring down the Lapd from the inside. Maybe she’s a love interest for one or several of the men and/or women. She could also be one of those overly nice people who get on your nerves for just being so flipping happy all the time.

TV Review: Excellent ‘Southland’ Returns With First New TNT Episodes
Chicago – TNT’s “Southland” has found that rare balance that evades most modern cop shows. In fact, it may be the best show of its type since “NYPD Blue.” There have been (too) many procedural shows about weekly mysteries that find tidy resolutions by episode’s end but finding the balance between the daily life of being a cop and the kind of character-driven ensemble writing that propelled some of our best police shows to multiple awards is much more difficult. Watch it in action on TNT this week.

TV Rating: 4.5/5.0

After picking up the unaired episodes that NBC unceremoniously discarded after canceling the show partway into its second season, TNT announced last year that they would produce their own third season for the show with ten episodes to air starting this week. The show will reportedly be a bit different with a smaller ensemble overall and more self-contained plots...

2010 Emmys: Which longshots deserve nods in the Supporting Actor/Actress categories?
Courteney Cox, Josh Hopkins, Busy Philipps, Dan Byrd, Ian Gomez, Christa Miller, and Brian Van Holt in Cougar Town (2009)
The 2010 Primetime Emmy nominations will be announced Thursday morning in Los Angeles, and while newcomers like Glee, Modern Family, and The Good Wife are all considered front-runners in their respective categories, you know there’ll also be plenty of groan-inducing kudos for series and actors who’ve passed their prime — or maybe never reached it in the first place. After all, it’s the Emmys, and outrage over snubs is as an important part of the process as rooting for Vanessa L. Williams in the Supporting Actress in a Comedy division celebrating what voters got right.

With that in mind,...

'Southland' lives at TNT
The suspense is over for "Southland" fans: The show will be back for a third season on TNT.

The cable channel has ordered 10 more episodes of the critically hailed and fiercely loved cop show, which TNT picked up after NBC canceled it last fall. Season 3 is scheduled to premiere in January.

"'Southland' is a challenging, visceral show that engages viewers with its immersive style, provocative storylines and complex characters," TNT programming boss Michael Wright says. "These qualities have made 'Southland' a favorite among critics and appointment viewing for an extremely loyal audience."

TNT aired all 13 produced episodes of the show earlier this year. The first seven -- which aired on NBC in 2009 -- performed only modestly in the ratings, but Season 2 episodes in March and April picked up. The six-episode second season averaged 2.7 million viewers (not huge numbers for TNT, but not bad either), a little...

Southland: TNT Series Renewed for Season Three
A no-nonsense cop drama, Southland revolves around a group of Lapd officers. Armed with their experience and firearms, they take on all manners of problems on the streets of Los Angeles. The series stars an ensemble of both new and familiar faces like Benjamin McKenzie, Kevin Alejandro, Arija Bareikis, Michael Cudlitz, Shawn Hatosy, Regina King, Michael McGrady, Tom Everett Scott, Emily Bergl, Patrick Fischler, Lex Medlin, C. Thomas Howell, Emily Swallow, Carla Jeffery, Lori Alan, and Roxana Brusso.

As fans of the show know all too well, NBC cancelled Southland before its second season even began airing. Production was shut down after only six episodes of year two were produced. Thankfully, TNT picked it up and agreed to air season two and re-air season one. If they performed well enough, TNT would consider a third season.

The ratings haven't been terrible but they haven't...

'Southland' Renewed for Third Season by TNT
TNT, an American cable network, announced today that it will renew Southland, a police drama, for a third season. This means that ten episodes were ordered. Besides, the third season of this show created by Ann Biderman (NYPD Blue, Public Enemies) will be aired in January 2011.

For those who don't know (this includes me), Southland is centred on police constables (or "officers" in case you didn't understand), detectives and members of a gang unit from Los Angeles. Besides, the show documents the life of these workers of the Los Angeles Police Department (Lapd) on and off the job.

The ensemble cast includes Kevin Alejandro (Ugly Betty); Arija Bareikis (Crossing Jordan); Clifton Collins Jr. (Star Trek); Michael Cudlitz (Band of Brothers); Shawn Hatosy (Alpha Dog); Regina King (Ray); Michael McGrady (The Thin Red Line); Ben McKenzie (The O.C.); and Tom Everett Scott (Boiler Room).

Finally, here's the teaser of the second season.

Southland Renewed for a Third Season, Legend Of The Seeker Cancelled
That headline seems pretty backward to me–mostly the Southland half. The police procedural has charted an operatic path over the airwaves over the past year or so. Southland premiered well enough on NBC in the spring of 2009 to earn a second season, but the network cancelled the series in the fall before any of the six new produced episodes had a chance to air. TNT came to the rescue and aired said episodes, which netted a meager 2.1 million live viewers per episode that should not reasonably meet the cable giant’s standards. And yet, after the jump, you’ll find a press release that promises a third season for this little show that could, as well as details on Seeker’s cancellation.

Of course there is no press release that heralds the end of Legend of the Seeker, but EW brings the news that there will be no season three.

Created by Emmy winner Ann Biderman (NYPD Blue, Public Enemies), Southland takes a raw, authentic look at police work in Los Angeles. The series focuses on officers, detectives and members of a gang unit as they endure the triumphs and tragedies that populate their lives both on and off the job.

Southland's Season 2 finale doesn't feel much like a finale — because it wasn't intended to be.

The episode (Tuesday at 10/9c on TNT) was originally the sixth of a 13-episode second season ordered by NBC before the network canceled the show before its fall 2009 premiere. As such, the "finale" is missing some of the cliff-hanger trappings that TV viewers have come to expect.

"We had no choice," creator and executive producer Ann Biderman tells TVGuide.com about ending the season with this episode. "But there's something kind of great about it. We go out with a bang. Southland has proven itself to be one of the best cop dramas ever produced for television. With an explosive second season nearing its end, each new episode has been better than the last. It truly is must-see TV. Sadly, year two of this action-packed procedural was cut short when NBC decided to cancel the show just six episodes into its fall shooting schedule. Those six episodes are currently running on TNT, where the series has continued to amass a rabid fanbase. This Thursday, March 30th, brings us Episode 2.05: "What Makes Sammy Run?". And it's a very important episode for gang Detectives Nate Moretta (Kevin Alejandro) and Sammy Bryant (Shawn Hatosy). TV Review: Great ‘Southland’ Premieres New Episodes on TNT
Chicago – The most notable casualties of the disastrous “The Jay Leno Show” may have been Conan O’Brien and the reputation of “The Tonight Show” but the fate of scripted drama on NBC also took a hit, exemplified by the fact that the network let arguably their best show go without much fanfare. Someone at TNT saw the potential of “Southland” to be the next “NYPD Blue” or “ER” and agreed to air the six episodes that NBC left in the can. They start tonight and if they do well enough, we may get more. Do your part and watch.

TV Rating: 4.5/5.0

Complex ensemble dramas are a thing of the past on network television. Think about the most recent network hits. Do you think even something like “ER” would have found an audience? I don’t. I think the networks have given up on scripted drama, realizing that they can...

SouthLAnd: Season 2 Sneak Peek & Giveaway
With delays and cancellation plaguing SouthLAnd, who would have guessed that we would be sitting here now, less than a week away from the premiere of its sophomore season on March 2nd. Out with NBC and their peacock and in comes TNT, a network that wasn’t afraid of to air a show deemed “too dark.” If we’ve learned anything from this ordeal it’s that a great show sometimes has a chance to find a better home, and that the one time unfortunate cancellation is now a Godsend – giving SouthLAnd the chance to not only survive, but thrive on a network that believes in it (cough – and off the sinking Titanic that is NBC – cough).

The season premiere, written by creator Ann Biderman and executive producer John Wells, gives fans just a taste of what they can expect to see in the episodes to come. With Clarke (Tom Everett Scott...

Exclusive: Ben McKenzie Delves Deep Into Southland Season 2
Ben McKenzie talks about resuscitating the once-canceled series for its limited TNT run

Both Southland fans, and the show alike, have had a rough go of it since the police procedural hit TV screens late last spring. Created by Ann Biderman, Southland erupted like a short blast of gunfire in a crowded gymnasium. Meant as a thematic follow-up to NBC's popular hospital drama ER, the show quickly amassed a huge fanbase throughout its initial seven-episode run. It was set to return in the fall with a leaner, meaner set of storylines. During production on Season Two's sixth episode, NBC pulled the plug on Southland, leaving its fate in limbo as producers hurried to find a new home for it. TNT quickly stepped up to bat, nabbing the unaired episodes, as well as the first season for re-air.

With newly added footage and less censored dialogue, TNT began airing the repurposed episodes in January.

Teaser of 'Southland' Season 2
Even though NBC pulled the plug on Southland, TNT, an American cable network, decided to purchase the broadcasting rights of the second season. Besides, since a few days, its teaser has been online.

To be honest with you, I haven't seen the first season. However, I'm aware that it centres on Ben Sherman (Benjamin McKenzie), a rookie officer of the Los Angeles Police Department (Lapd), and John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz), his training officer. Moreover, the show also follows Det. Lydia Adams (Regina King) who tries to find the balance between work and motherly responsibility; Officer Chickie Brown (Arija Bareikis) who aspires to be the first woman on the elite Swat team; and Det. Sammy Bryant (Shawn Hatosy), whose private life interferes with his work.

Finally, the second season will premiere on TNT on March 2, 2010 at 10 Pm (9 central). By the way, if you're a fan of the show, can you tell me what I'm missing,...

[TV] Southland: The Complete First Season - Uncensored
Before we start in on what will initially seem like a crucifixion of Southland, know that we’re only drawing this comparison because its producers chose to enter into territory where the trail has been previously blazed by countless shows, and yet claim in an extra feature that they’ve created something new and exciting with Southland. Either they’re being very tongue-in-cheek funny or are legitimately blind to the sheer volume of shows which have already done exactly what they set out to do: look at the life of Lapd officers and how the job affects them.

The list of shows based around the Lapd is as follows (in alphabetical order, no less): 10-8: Officers on Duty (2002-3), Adam-12 (1968-75), Boomtown (2002-3), The Closer (2005-Present), Columbo (1971-94), Dark Blue (2009), Dragnet (Forever), Fastlane (2002-3), Hunter (1984-91), L.A. Heat (1999), Lapd: Life On the Beat (1995-99), Life (2007-9), Martial Law...

DVD Review: First Season of Spectacular Cop Show ‘Southland’
Chicago – One episode of the excellent “Southland” should tell you all you need to know about what NBC thinks about quality dramatic writing. They don’t care. They looked at this show, one of the most expertly-written on television, and canceled it, even after starting production on the second season. They’d rather give you “The Jay Leno Show”. Show them the error of their ways and make “Southland” a hit on DVD and with upcoming new episodes on TNT.

DVD Rating: 4.0/5.0

“Southland” started interestingly enough that I had a feeling it could develop into something truly special if given enough time. Ironically, I wrote in my review of the NBC pilot, “”Southland” doesn’t quite feel as much like a show of the prime era of NBC as it does a part of the networks that are pushing drama today - basic cable. “Southland” would be right at home on FX,...

Interview: Michael Cudlitz Redefines the TV Cop in Excellent ‘Southland’
Chicago – NBC’s loss is the TNT Network’s gain as the excellent police drama “Southland” re-emerges on basic cable with a premiere Tuesday, January 12th. Michael Cudlitz plays the conflicted veteran officer John Cooper in the show.

NBC-tv originally aired the series in April of last year. The highly touted and critically acclaimed show was deemed too “gritty” for the 9pm (8 Central) time slot preceding their Jay Leno show experiment. How is it looking now?

Regardless, the TNT Network has picked up this superior urban drama, set on the streets of Los Angeles. This is not your father’s “Dragnet.” The police are portrayed as human beings with the same challenges and flaws as all of us, trying to keep 500 square miles and 15 million people at bay on a daily basis.

Southland: Will TNT Save the Cancelled TV Series?
Though NBC has axed Southland before its second season could premiere, the producers aren't giving up on it. They just need to find the drama a new home.

If you weren't watching last season, Southland revolves around a bunch of cops on the Lapd. Armed with their experience and firearms, they take on all manners of problems on the streets of Los Angeles. The series stars an ensemble of both new faces and TV veterans like Benjamin McKenzie, Kevin Alejandro, Arija Bareikis, Michael Cudlitz, Shawn Hatosy, Regina King, Michael McGrady, Tom Everett Scott, Emily Bergl, Patrick Fischler, Lex Medlin, C. Thomas Howell, Emily Swallow, Carla Jeffery, Lori Alan, and Roxana Brusso.

Southland made a decent debut last season but viewership cooled as the season progressed. NBC renewed it for a second season even though the programmers knew they didn't have an appropriate place for...

‘Southland’ Canceled Before Any Episodes Air
Yesterday, Southland executive producers Ann Biderman and Christopher Chulack walked on the set of the critically acclaimed police drama while they were filming their sixth episode of the season and announced to the cast and crew that it has been canceled and would not return for its sophomore season even though not a single episode of the five completed had aired. They will continue filming and complete the sixth episode of its second season this week.

It’s been reported that the decision to cancel the show after execs over at NBC screened the first four episodes of this season and deemed them too dark an inappropriate for a 9Pm time slot. This season was going to focus more on Adams (Regina King), Sherman (Benjamin McKenzie) and their partners Cooper (Michael Cudlitz) and Brown (Arija Bareikis) rather than the ensemble cast of the first season.

No word yet on when...

Southland: NBC Drama Cancelled But Could Return
The speed with which TV networks cancel new shows these days can make your head spin. If a show doesn't perform within one or two episodes, it just disappears from the schedule. They traditionally give a bit more time to renewed shows. That's not the case with Southland. It's been cancelled before its second season debut.

From executive producer John Wells, Southland follows a group of police officers on the tough streets of Los Angeles. Having debuted last April, the ensemble cast includes Benjamin McKenzie, Kevin Alejandro, Arija Bareikis, Michael Cudlitz, Shawn Hatosy, Regina King, Michael McGrady, and Tom Everett Scott.

The series began airing in the former timeslot of ER, another show that was executive produced by Wells. It initially looked like NBC had the makings of a hit with 9.86 million viewers and a 3.2/9 in the demo. Unfortunately, the numbers...
