Director Simon Wells talks Mars Needs Moms, working with the motion-capture format, bringing this cast together and much more.
Director Simon Wells has always been right at home at the drawing board, literally speaking. After starting out as an animator on Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, he transitioned into directing with An American Tail: Fievel Goes West, Balto, The Prince of Egypt, and the live-action adventure The Time Machine. After working as a storyboard artist for Disney for several years, Simon Wells made his directing return with the animated tale Mars Needs Moms, which hits the shelves on Blu-ray, 3D Blu-ray and DVD on August 9. I recentlly had the chance to speak with Simon Wells over the phone about this animated tale, and here's what he had to say.
It must be nice to delve into a screenplay adaptation like this, since the original book is just 40 pages long. You have the core,...

One of last year's unsung heroes was Disney's A Christmas Carol. A film I loved, which seemed to largely go unnoticed. The critical consensus was pretty evenly split, which never does much for inciting a great deal of word-of-mouth, but I was thoroughly impressed with this particular telling (see my original review below). I suspect there was a certain disinterest in yet another version of the story, which led to the lack of zeal for the film, but it deserves a serious look.
Also available as a 3D release, the film has a nice, if not particularly overloaded, selection of bonuses to help tempt you. The key Blu-Ray extras are a feature length picture-in-picture viewing mode which takes you behind the scenes to learn how the motion capture effort comes together. It's a nice bonus really, though I'm not sure that a great many people will be inclined to watch the entire thing.

'A Christmas Carol' has long been one of my favorite stories of the festive season. Thankfully Hollywood has a history of producing decent adaptations so I was optimistic that Robert Zemeckis wouldn't make a hash of it with his 2009 motion capture adaption. Besides, Zemeckis has a decent record of delivering solid family entertainment as evidenced by the Back To The Future trilogy and the enjoyable, if not electrifying, The Polar Express.
The Polar Express was a spectacular experiment in the potential of motion capture technology. As a film, it is a visual feast. There is something about it, though, that undermines its power to move. I partly put it down to the slightly odd look of the digitally animated children. As impressive as they are, they are not quite real. There are also characters who are either abrasive or bordering on the grotesque. Combine these factors with Zemeckis'...
