If there's anyone that doesn't need saving, it's Rambo. But even Sylvester Stallone's nigh-on invincible action hero needs a helping hand from time to time — especially when his movie flops with critics. Enter: Netflix. The king of the streamers has extended its own muscular arm to John J. Rambo, making for the streaming version of that "epic handshake" meme. That is to say, the streamer has given "Rambo: Last Blood" a small reprieve following a devastating critical response upon its 2019 debut.
Back in the mid to late 2000s, Stallone returned to his two best-known characters, giving Rocky a heartfelt and surprisingly solid legacy sequel in 2006's "Rocky Balboa." Given how these legacy sequels typically go, it was an impressive feat for Stallone to have pulled off, especially since critics were mostly complimentary of the movie. He followed it up with yet another revisit, this time to the world of John Rambo.

French actor Jean Reno and Mexican actress Adriana Barraza star in the true story of a Brazilian man who nurses a penguin back to health, who then repays him by visiting him every year, traveling 5000 miles from his habitat to see his human friend. My Penguin Friend is a joyous, moving, sweet-natured film suitable for the whole family.

This ecologically conscious family film tells the heartwarming true story of an unlikely bond formed between a fisherman and a wayward penguin – a bond that would transcend borders, both physical and metaphorical.
My Penguin Friend movie follows the real-life account of João, a simple yet solitary man living in coastal Brazil who rescues an injured Magellanic penguin after a chance encounter in the waters off Ilha Grande. Named “DinDim” by one of the local children, this intrepid bird would proceed to develop a deep affinity for João, returning annually across thousands of miles of open ocean just to spend time in his company.
Director David Schurmann spins this tale of interspecies compassion with a keen eye towards authenticity, opting to feature live penguin performers over digital alternatives. While clearly aimed at younger viewers, the film casts its net wider by subtly weaving in environmentalist undercurrents around overfishing, oil spills, and climate change.

The movie tackles grief with expected penguin antics. Emotional performances elevate the Homeward Bound-like story. Unnecessary subplot impacts pacing and viewer engagement.
Based on a heartwarming true story, My Penguin Friend (2024) promises both laughs and a good cry for the whole family. However, like the movie's animal star, the film doesnt quite soar, but it does manage to hit all the notes associated with this kind of inspirational, family-friendly fare. After all, its hard not to be delighted by the real-life inspiration for David Schurmanns feature. As the closing text reveals, a lost penguin, who really was named DinDim by those who met him, swam over 5,000 miles, from Patagonia to Brazil, for eight years.

It’s been a few decades since last we saw Jean Reno playing a withdrawn curmudgeon protecting a pint-sized charge in “The Professional.” Now, with director David Schurmann’s “My Penguin Friend,” it’s a welcome return to a winning formula.
In the Brazilian filmmaker’s tender-hearted, all-ages adventure, Reno plays a grief-stricken father who gains a small, sweet companion after rescuing him from polluted waters. Inspired by the unshakeable bond between a real-life Brazilian fisherman and a Magellanic penguin thrown off his migration route, the French actor reveals new colors as a performer, shading the picture’s playful and poignant overtones with sensitivity and subtlety, making this a must-see for those who love uplifting stories about redemption, perseverance and empathy.
Reno plays João, whose journey began long before his penguin pal’s arrival, when his cozy, beachside home in Ilha Grande, Rio de Janeiro, was filled with love, music and laughter.

Dios mio! Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are scuttling toward expanding the reach of Blue Beetle with a new animated series. Miguel Puga has been working on the Blue Beetle animated series since early 2024 and will act as the project’s showrunner and director, with Cristian Martinez writing the scripts.
Angel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, the top talent behind DC’s 2023 film, return for the Blue Beetle animated series as executive producers alongside John Richard. Galen Vaisman, who helped executive produce the movie, oversees the animated adaptation. Casting for the project remains a mystery, though Deadline says DC is in contact with multiple stars from the live-action film. Although deals still need to be implemented, their response was positive.
The Blue Beetle animated series continues the story started in Soto’s live-action film. If audiences connect with the animated series, DC could continue the story in a new live-action sequel.

Sylvester Stallone's "Rambo" movies might not be as beloved as his "Rocky" films, but they've had just as fascinating a trajectory. What's more, they've been incredibly influential in the history of action movies, charting the general evolution of the genre across four decades. If you want to get an insight into the state of action filmmaking at a certain time, "Rambo" films are a good gauge.
"First Blood," the inaugural "Rambo" film, was noteworthy for blending what are now well-known action tropes with an attempt at exploring the very real issue of Ptsd in the context of the Vietnam War. Stallone's John J. Rambo was introduced as a former United States Army Special Forces officer who despite his preternatural combat skills was haunted by his experiences overseas. Following that, the character of Rambo underwent somewhat of a transformation throughout the '80s, becoming the epitome of the muscle-bound,...

‘Drag Me to Hell’ – New Australian Blu-ray Celebrates 15 Years of Sam Raimi’s Horror Return [Review]
Of all the masters of horror that helped to reshape the genre as we know it in the ’70s and ’80s, none were more successful in branching out and achieving commercial success within the studio system than Sam Raimi. His Spider-Man trilogy laid the groundwork for the influx of comic book movies that would follow, but he was eager to return to his roots following the third installment’s turbulent production.
Armed with $30 million and complete creative control, Raimi dusted off a story he wrote with elder brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi back in the ’90s to make his triumphant return to horror with Drag Me to Hell in 2009. The Raimi broters seemingly drew inspiration from 1957’s Night of the Demon but injected it with a heavy dose of Evil Dead DNA, most closely evoking Evil Dead 2‘s cartoonish blend of over-the-top splatter and tongue-in-cheek humor.

Tom Cruise's upcoming movie with Alejandro G. Iñárritu could land him his first Oscar nomination in over 20 years. Cruise's new Warner Bros. deal enhances his chances of finally winning an Academy Award. Shift towards working with auteur directors like Iñárritu could lead to more Oscar nominations and potentially a win for Cruise.
Tom Cruise already has a new project under his recent Warner Bros. partnership, and this could be the project that finally breaks a years-long career streak and gives him a huge career first. Tom Cruise’s acting career began in the 1980s, with his big break being the 1983 coming-of-age comedy Risky Business. Although Cruise has starred in movies from different genres since then, such as horror with Interview with the Vampire, psychological drama with Eyes Wide Shut, and period drama with The Last Samurai, Cruise is best known for his action roles.

Lysette is excellent as a young woman returning home to care for her dying mother in Andrea Pallaoro’s intelligently crafted film
A mysterious miracle is at the heart of this absorbing and superbly acted film from the Italian director Andrea Pallaoro, which refuses the cliched “issue movie” beats of confrontation, catharsis and resolution. Like his previous work Hannah, which starred Charlotte Rampling as the haunted, troubled woman of that name, Monica is marked by its cool compositional rigour: scenes from a life are evoked with studied, often wordless vignettes and middle-distance shots from fixed camera positions, combined occasionally with looming, asymmetrical closeups.
Trans performer Trace Lysette plays Monica, who has an income from sex work and who, perhaps for professional reasons, has cultivated a coolly resonant, pleasingly modulated voice, which nonetheless rises to anger in various phone conversations of which we hear just one side: conversations with her partner...

The movie introduces Jaime Reyes, the third generation of Blue Beetle, who discovers an alien artifact and becomes a young hero facing conflicts with antagonist Victoria Kord and villain Carapax. It seems that “Blue Beetle” has come full circle. The superhero movie was originally slated as an HBO Max (now simply known as Max) streaming release, but then moved to a theatrical run during development. And while it was a box office disappointment — despite getting the top spot during its opening weekend in early August — “Blue Beetle” might find more of an audience when it’s released on digital on September 26.
It’s available to stream as a digital purchase in 4K Ultra HD for $24.99 on Prime Video. If you aren’t a Prime member, you can sign up for a free trial here.

‘Blue Beetle,’ the latest and second-to-last Dceu movie, was released last August, and as it was anticipated, the movie didn’t really do well at the box office. Despite positive reviews from critics and audiences (78% on Tomatometer and 92% on Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes), the movie grossed only $120 million worldwide, which makes it the lowest-grossing Dceu movie ever, falling behind this year’s ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods,’ which grossed only $133 million.
Xolo Maridueña’s debut as the Blue Beetle received favorable criticism, and we can’t blame the movie for its commercial failure. It’s a fact that this movie was released at the worst possible time, and with everything going on around DC Studios and the ongoing strikes, this movie was never given a chance to succeed. Still, James Gunn previously said that he has plans for Maridueña’s Blue Beetle in the future of his Dcu, so...

Ángel Manuel Soto and Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer's "Blue Beetle" (check out our review here) may not have been a box office success, but the latest venture from DC Studios and one of the last films of the DC Cinematic Universe before James Gunn and Peter Safran revamp the studio is thankfully one of the most fun. Not to mention, it's also one of the rare instances where a superhero movie embraces cultural specificity, instead of just perpetuating the same ol' white stories over and over again. If you've yet to see the film, here's what to expect.
Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) is a recent college grad returning home and ready to take on the world, but a lot has changed over the last four years, and home looks quite a bit different. Thrust into a bit of a quarter-life crisis, Jaime searches for purpose when he comes across an ancient...
