Anika Noni Rose Speaks Out On Disney’s Princess Tiana Series Not Moving Forward: “Deeply Disappointed”
Image
Anika Noni Rose is breaking her silence over Disney’s decision earlier this month not to move forward with Tiana, an animated musical series offshoot of The Princess and the Frog movie set for Disney+.

First announced in December 2020, the project was expected to feature Rose reprising her role as Tiana from the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog, which revolved around Disney’s first Black princess.

“Last week an announcement was made regarding the cancellation of the series, Tiana,” she began in a statement shared on Instagram. “I’ve been getting loads of messages expressing kindness, support and overwhelming disappointment.”

“I too am deeply disappointed that the continuation of Tiana’s journey in series form has been cut short,” adding that the highly anticipated series adaptation had been a “long time coming” and involved “a lot of beautiful work was put into it by all the creatives involved.”

Tiana Series Scrapped As Disney Animation Moves Away From Longform Streaming Content
Image
Walt Disney Animation Studios has officially scrapped its Tiana series, which was set to serve as a follow-up to The Princess and The Frog.

According to THR, the project was cancelled as part of the studio's new strategy, which involves moving away from all original longform animated content for the Disney+ streaming service. A spokesperson confirmed there "will be some layoffs in its Vancouver studio as a result of this shift in business strategy."

In addition to Tiana, an untitled feature-length project has also been shelved.

First announced back in 2020, Tiana was being developed as a musical featuring Anika Noni Rose reprising her lead role from the 2009 animated film. The trade report mentions that, despite best efforts, "including several changes to the creative team, Tiana ultimately could not get to where it needed to be given production costs."

Apparently, The Princess and the Frog is still a key property for the company,...

‘Tiana’ Musical Series Not Moving Forward At Disney+
Image
Walt Disney Animation Studios has decided not to move forward with Tiana, an animated musical series offshoot of The Princess and the Frog movie set for Disney+, Deadline has confirmed.

While Disney did not respond to request for comment today over the Tiana series cancellation, sources confirm that going forward neither animation studio will be providing long form content for Disney +.

With a Tiana original special now the focus, we hear, it seems that creatively a Tiana series had been going nowhere fast for several years. That creative funk was why all we’ve seen the past four years is a single image from the proposed Tiana series.

First announced in December 2020, the project was expected to feature Anika Noni Rose reprising her role as Tiana from the 2009 film The Princess and the Frog, which revolved around Disney’s first Black princess.

Set in New Orleans during the 1920s,...

Laura Benanti Says “F*** You Forever” to Former Broadway Co-Star Zachary Levi
Image
There’s no love lost between She Loves Me lovebirds, Laura Benanti and Zachary Levi.

Though they shared the Broadway stage in a successful and Tony Award-winning 2016 musical revival, Benanti made it clear in a new podcast interview that she was never a fan of Levi, who at the time was a successful TV star from NBC’s Chuck and on his way to movie stardom as the title character in DC’s Shazam! “I never liked him,” Benanti told Eric Williams on his That’s a Gay Ass Podcast. “Everyone was like, ‘He’s so great!’ And I was like, ‘No, he’s not. He’s sucking up all the fucking energy in this room. He wants to mansplain everybody’s part to them.'”

Directed by Scott Ellis and choreographed by Warren Carlyle, the Roundabout Theatre Company production starred Benanti and Levi opposite Jane Krakowski, Gavin Creel, Byron Jennings,...

Only Murders In The Building's Biggest Cameo Yet Is A Brilliant Meta Joke
Image
"Only Murders in the Building" season 3 has a few songs in its heart. A musical theatre aficionado will have a ball with season 3 of "Only Murders in the Building," thanks to Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) converting his outlandish murder-mystery play "Death Rattle" into a musical.

While the trio are solving yet another murder, this season is brimming with musical references. In season 3, episode 2, a recuperating Putnam hallucinates his loved ones performing a pastiche of "There'll Be Some Changes Made" from the Bob Fosse-directed "All That Jazz." It's a cutting reference because said musical film, especially this particular number, metatextually tackles the director's heart attack. It deals with mortal self-flagellation, both for Fosse and in-universe for Fosse's fictional avatar.

In contrast, the show also applies a more lighthearted reference to "The Producers" that complements Oliver's pursuits. After a falling out with his friend Charles Haden-Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver needs a replacement for the Investigator.

Image
Broadway performances all over the New York theater district are starting back up again after a year and a half of Covid-19 pandemic closures. There are currently six musical productions set to open this fall. Could we see any of them contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Let’s take a look at the plot of each musical as well as some of the awards history of their creators, actors, and creative teams, plus the opening and closing dates (where applicable).

SEETony Awards history: Black winners from pioneer Juanita Hall to record-breaker Audra McDonald

Review: The Princess and the Frog
This is the review of The Princess and the Frog, directed by John Musker and Ron Clements, starring Anika Noni Rose, Bruno Campos, Jennifer Cody, Jim Cummings, Keith David, Michael-Leon Wooley and Peter Bartlett. The Princess and the Frog, the latest offering from the Disney studios, is set in the French Quarter of New Orleans during the ‘Jazz Age’ and don’t you know it from the opening sequence to the closing credits, with bustling Mardi Gras scenery and new, but somewhat familiar, sounding show tunes as the film is scored by Disney stalwart Randy Newman.

Review: The Princess and the Frog
Once upon a time, a short time ago, a reliable constant linked one summer movie season to the next: The presence of a cel animated Disney picture, complete with songs, anthropomorphic animals and (usually) some kind of princess. Then, the run of success that began with The Little Mermaid ended. In its stead rose Pixar, computer generated graphics and animated photorealism. While the new trend has offered its share of incredible feats and visual wonders, nothing can beat a dose of that good old-fashioned hand drawn magic. This year, it’s been mercifully resurrected by the Mouse House in The Princess and the Frog, after a hiatus of more than half a decade. The film is worth a look for sheer nostalgic value, even if its songs and characters lack the staying power of Ariel, Belle, or Simba. Co-directors John Musker and Ron Clements, the men behind Aladdin and The Little Mermaid, resurrect...

Review: The Princess And The Frog
Ron Clements and John Musker return to Disney to bring fans the newest in their constantly growing vault of animated classics. The duo that most recently brought us Hercules and Treasure Planet, both of which were far less popular than most Disney animated productions, also deserve credit for two of the most popular ones… The Little Mermaid and Aladdin.

The story loosely follows the traditional story, but replaces the princess of the title with a hard-working young woman from New Orleans, a woman with little money and no royalty. Tiana, voiced by Anika Noni Rose, has a dream since her childhood of opening the grandest restaurant in New Orleans with her father. She carries this dream on her back, working two jobs as a waitress and saving every little penny she earns to one day realize her dreams.

Her best friend since childhood is Charlotte, voiced by Jennifer Cody. Charlotte is not a princess either,...

Ron Wants To Give 'The Princess and the Frog' A Big Ole Sloppy Kiss!
I may seem overtly cynical and critical of today's movies, but it's only because I care about quality when it comes to shelling out a few clams for a film. There was a time, long before my fingers even touched a keyboard, where studios and producers were true showman and labored long and hard to craft memorable pieces of entertainment. There are many artisans today who hold the same ideals, but they are few and far between, often having their works lost in the sea of stories and premises recycled over and over again. We the audience should demand to get our money's worth and more, not shrug our shoulders and give a pass to movies that are barely decent compared to all the other crap. Even a powerhouse studio like Disney lost its way over the years long after the passing of its founder. They hit a great stride...

Comic Con: Disney/Pixar Introduce 'Toy Story 1, 2, 3,' 'Beauty and the Beast 3D' and More
Photo: Walt Disney Pictures John Lasseter moderated today's Walt Disney/Pixar Animation panel at Comic Con, which was a definite treat for any fan of animation as it opened with the first five or so minutes of Toy Story 2 in 3-D in preparation for the film's upcoming double-feature re-release on October 2 as both Toy Story and Toy Story 2 have been re-rendered in 3-D and it looks just as good as you would expect. Strangely enough, in the short bit that was shown I felt the 3-D was far more involving than it was for Pixar's release of Up, which I never felt benefit from the fact it was in 3-D. To bring the 1995 and 1999 features to life all Pixar had to do was go back in and render the film bringing out the third-dimension that was already in there as CGI films are already created in 3-D. The...
