Image
Exclusive: Jack Haven (I Saw the TV Glow) and actress/comedian Janeane Garofalo (Wet Hot American Summer) are set to star in Grind, a darkly comedic thriller from filmmaker Peter Collins Campbell that shoots in New York City in October.

Supported by Cinereach, Grind will be produced by Bethany McHugh for Affects Next Day’s Work, with Philipp Engelhorn serving as executive producer. Allison Estrin is casting the project.

Bradley Cooper’s Only Horror Film Is Deeply Disturbing—And It’s Streaming For Free
Kevin Bacon
Plenty of A-listers have gotten their start in the world of horror, from Kevin Bacon in Friday the 13th to Jennifer Aniston in Leprechaun. But did you know that Bradley Cooper also starred in a horror film early in his acting career? He plays the lead role in Ryûhei Kitamura’s 2008 film Midnight Meat Train, an adaptation of Clive Barker’s 1984 short story of the same name.

In the film,

A struggling photographer meets the owner of an eminent art gallery in pursuit of a successful career. His obsession with uncovering humanity’s dark side as his debut project draws him to a serial killer who preys on late-night subway commuters.

Cooper plays that struggling photographer who quite literally goes into the belly of the beast searching for a new subject to impress his rich benefactor. I promise you have no idea where this film is going, and it is one wild ride.

The 20 Best Disney Duos Of All Time, Ranked
Image
While there are a lot of Disney characters who easily stand out on their own, there are some iconic Disney duos that show how much fun a pair can be. Disney has always loved exploring friendship in their animated movies and they have done so successfully since the beginning of their run. However, even in their long history, some Disney duos rise above the rest and showcase those truly special pairings that have delivered laughs, heartbreak, and charm to audiences over the years.

Including all the Pixar movies alongside the animated Disney roster, there are a lot of notable pairs to choose from. There are some friends who clearly go back a long way, like Mike and Sully in Monsters Inc. Some start out with a lot of tension only to find common ground, like Moana and Maui. Of course, some Disney duos are just fun to watch sharing the screen,...

Why Jack Nicholson Refused To Be Hades In Disney's Hercules
Image
There are some Disney characters that can't have any other voice but the ones we've always heard them as. No one would suit Woody but the frantic, flailing tones of Tom Hanks just like no one could warm our hearts singing "Beauty and the Beast" like Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Potts. But in the case of James Woods as Hades, the Lord of the Underworld in "Hercules," the idea of him being brought to life by Jack Nicholson would've made for an interesting and (admit it) potentially better alternative. Disney just didn't have the dollar for it.

According to The Laughing Place, Jack Nicholson was approached by Disney to be a part of the demi-god's story following the suggestion of Danny DeVito. Directors Ron Clements and John Musker had a meeting with DeVito for the role of Philoctetes, the trainer of heroes and best bud to Hercules (Roger Bart). While...

10 Disney Villains Too Hard to Hate (Even Though You Should)
Image
Disney villains can be a divisive topic of conversation. Obviously, the heroes are there for viewers to get on side with and support in whatever journey they're undertaking. However, particularly in more recent times, fans have become more inclined to see things from a villain's point of view, as well as enjoy what they're like.

A lot of villains behave unforgivably, but it's not what they do that can make them hard to hate; it's their personalities. Some are funny, while others deliver energy that livens up the movie and encourages fans to look forward to seeing them on the screen. They're crucial to any good animation, so much so that fans can't always despise them.

Hades Is a Comedic Character in Hercules

Some Disney villains are rooted in darkness and are nothing but scary. Although Hades is intimidating, he's one of the funniest Disney villains out there. In Hercules,...

Universal won’t let Robert Zemeckis bring Back to the Future musical to the screen
Image
A film adaptation of a Broadway musical of a major motion picture? Great Scott! It’s been done before but Robert Zemeckis would really love bringing Back to the Future to the screen — again, this time as a cinematic take on the hit musical. But will he ever get the chance?

While his latest movie Here flounders at the box office, Robert Zemeckis is on the promotional circuit also highlighting some of his greatest hits, including one of his biggest money makers, 1985’s Back to the Future. As far as his plans, inspiration and its status, he noted, “I would like to do the Back to the Future, the musical. Just like [Mel] Brooks did The Producers. I would love to do that. I think that would be great… I floated that out to the folks at Universal. They don’t get it. So, nothing I can do.”

Broadway’s ‘Back To The Future’ Announces January Closing
Image
The Broadway stage musical adaptation of Back To The Future will play its final performance on Sunday, January 5, producers announced today, bringing an end to its 18-month run at the Winter Garden Theatre.

When it closes, the musical will have performed more than 500 shows at the Winter Garden and, according to producers, sold $80 million in ticket sales. Producers have not announced a recoupment.

In recent months, attendance and sales have been slipping. Last week, the show took in $896,423 in weekly grosses, down considerably from the $1 million-plus figures from as recently as this past summer. Attendance last week was 86% of the venue’s capacity, while more recent Broadway arrivals – Cabaret, Sunset Blvd., Tammy Faye, The Outsiders – and even some longer-running shows like & Juliet, Aladdin, Hadestown and others – were in the 90% or more territory.

Directed by John Rando, the Broadway production, which opened on August 3, 2023, stars Casey Likes, Roger Bart, Evan Alexander Smith,...

Back to the Future – The Musical will end its Broadway run on Jan. 5, 2025.

The musical, which is an adaptation of the 1985 film, opened at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway on Aug. 3, 2023, and will have been on Broadway for 18 months at the time of its closing. The show has sold $80 million in tickets and appeared to attract movie fans, and new audiences to Broadway, but received mixed critical reviews and has seen a gradual decline in grosses and attendance.

Producers plan to open four productions in the next 18 months including Germany, Japan and announced an eight-year deal with Royal Caribbean to play the musical “in its full physical form” on Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas.

The show features a book, which closely follows the plot of the first film, by Bob Gale, the co-creator and co-writer for the film trilogy, and music and lyrics by Alan Silvestri, who...

Peter Jacobson reflects on his experiences filming The Midnight Meat Train alongside Bradley Cooper. Released in 2008, The Midnight Meat Train hails from director Ryhei Kitamura, with Cooper starring as Leon, a photographer obsessed with capturing the darkness of humanity who soon finds himself stalking a serial killer who brutally murders his victims aboard late-night subway journeys. During a recent interview with Screen Rant to promote Smile 2, Jacobson recalls his experiences filming The Midnight Meat Train with Cooper. Though the actor admits that the film hadn't been on his mind for some time, he reveals that he had a very positive experience on set, even though he wasn't quite as involved in the horror aspects of the movie as Cooper was. Why Disney Fans Still Love This Underrated 90s Hit

Quick Links The Music in Hercules Goes Above and Beyond Hercules Puts Contemporary Humor in an Ancient Society The Art Style in Hercules is Utterly Unique The music in Hercules adds depth and diversity to the film's themes. The movie incorporates contemporary humor, blending ancient Greek settings with '90s cultural references. The art style in Hercules is unique, drawing inspiration from ancient Greek art.

Disney is known for its crowd-pleasing animated family films, full of catchy music, gripping plots, and plenty of humor. Hercules is no exception. The movie, a loose adaptation of the Greek myth of Heracles, follows the young demigod as he trains to become a hero and falls in love with the human woman Megara, all while Hades plots to take down the other gods. While the plot is interesting on its own, the movie soars even further due to its chorus of muses narrating the film,...

2024 Tony Awards Winners: Sarah Paulson & Jonathan Groff Take Home Wins
Image
On Sunday, the 77th annual Tony Awards were held, hosted by Broadway and film actress Ariana DeBose at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. The ceremony saw wins for Sarah Paulson, Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe. Several notable faces took the stage as presenters, including Angelina Jolie, Brooke Shields, Nick Jonas and even former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

This year’s nominations raised some skeptical responses over the omission of the fan-favorite revival of The Wiz and Appropriate‘s nomination for costume design. The ceremony was also deemed “dull” by many viewers citing numerous on-stage speech fumbles and a lack of stage presence from presenters and award winners.

Regardless, fans were excited to see their favorite faces take home their wins. Stereophonic and Alicia Keys‘ musical Hell’s Kitchen swept the categories with 13 nominations. Paulson returned to the stage after 13 years and snagged a win,...

‘Forbidden Broadway’ Finds New Home Off Broadway
Image
The updated iteration of Gerard Alessandrini’s long-running Forbidden Broadway revue is heading back to Off Broadway following a brief flirtation with the prospect of a Broadway move.

Forbidden Broadway: Merrily We Stole A Song will begin previews August 23 at Theater555 on West 42nd Street. Opening night is set for Thursday, September 12.

Earlier this year, producers for the show announced that the satirical revue would make its decades-in-coming Broadway debut at the Hayes Theatre sometime this summer, but the planned staging was an early casualty of Broadway’s very crowded spring-summer season. Last month, the Broadway producers Ryan Bogner, Victoria Lang and Tracey McFarland said the Hayes staging wouldn’t happen due to the “enormously crowded” Broadway landscape.

Today, Forbidden Broadway creator Gerard Alessandrini said, “I am thrilled that this latest incarnation of the show that I had been preparing for more than a year, can now open Off Broadway,...

Tony nominations surprises: ‘Water for Elephants’ for Best Musical, ‘Stereophonic’ cast …
Image
In a Broadway season bursting at the seams with new musicals, plays and revivals – 36 productions opened during the 2023-2024 eligibility window – it is not a surprise that the 60 Tony Awards nominators caught theatre aficionados off guard with some of their choices.

The biggest surprise of the morning was the overperformance of new musical “Water for Elephants.” Our users only expected it to earn one nomination, but it ultimately ended up with seven, tying “Merrily We Roll Along” and beating out musicals such as “Suffs.” Its unexpected bids include the top category of Best Musical, director Jessica Stone, book and choreography. The one bid we thought it would land for featured actor Paul Alexander Nolan didn’t actually come to fruition. Speaking of surprise director noms, Michael Greif – who worked on three musicals this season – broke through for “Hell’s Kitchen.” He ranked ninth in our combined odds.

Daniel Radcliffe Is Finally a (Long-Deserved!) Tony Nominee
Image
Daniel Radcliffe’s post-“Harry Potter” career has long been dominated by his theater work, both in New York and London. On April 30, he finally scored his first Tony nomination, for his role in the musical “Merrily We Roll Along.”

Radcliffe’s buzzy stage work began in 2007 with a run in “Equus” on both sides of the pond. He powered a delightful, blockbuster revival of “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying” in 2011 (Grammy nomination), and since then, he has chosen an eclectic mix of projects, work where his name alone can often get challenging — or even just serious — work funded. Think the occasionally dense “The Cripple of Inishmaan,” the provocative “Privacy,” or the genre-bending experiment “The Lifespan of a Fact.” He’s long been an asset to the NY stage scene, and this morning’s recognition long-deserved.

Radcliffe landed another perfect part playing Charley Kringas in the buzzy...

Guy Ritchie's Live-Action Hercules Remake Gets Promising Update from Producers
Image
Guy Ritchie's live-action Hercules remake is still in the works, but facing delays and uncertainty due to various issues. Producers Joe and Anthony Russo confirm the project is moving forward, but they are still waiting on a script from Ritchie. The remake aims to honor the original with a modern spin, but Disney's track record with live-action remakes is mixed.

Guy Ritchie's live-action Hercules remake is reportedly still moving forward. The project will mark Ritchie's second live-action remake of a Disney animated classic - following his 2019 remake of Aladdin, which saw Will Smith replace Robin Williams as the iconic genie. News surrounding the upcoming Hercules movie has been silent for months, especially following the Hollywood strikes which halted almost all production towards the end of 2023. But the film's producers, Joe and Anthony Russo (Avengers: Infinity War & Avengers: Endgame), have confirmed the movie is on the way. Just very slowly.

2024 Outer Critics Circle nominations: ‘Stereophonic’ and ‘Suffs’ receive an end-season boost
Image
Nominations for the 2024 Outer Critics Circle Awards were announced on Tuesday, April 23. The stars of the hit Broadway revival of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez and Daniel Radcliffe, read off the nominees live from the Museum of Broadway.

Off-Broadway productions ultimately out-paced Broadway with this critics group. The new David Yazbek musical “Dead Outlaw” led the pack with nine nominations. It was followed by “The Connector,” another Off-Broadway musical, and “Stereophonic,” a lauded Broadway play, with seven nominations each.

While there are no Tony nominators in the Outer Critics Circle membership, these nominations can provide some clues as to how theater aficionados are thinking about this season’s Tony race. Of the five productions cited for Best New Broadway Musical, only “Days of Wine and Roses” and “Suffs” made the cut in the all-important Best Score category. They were joined by two Off-Broadway entries, as well as...

‘Excision’ (2012) Was the Midnight Sundance Showing That Sent Audiences Home with Bloody Tampons
Image
On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.

First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.

The Pitch: Cold Sore Terrorism, Period Sex, and John Waters as Your Youth Pastor? Nice Work, Pauline!

It’s my understanding that the tampons were handmade.

Unfortunately, I was unable to hunt down the contact information for “Excision” writer/director Richard Bates Jr. to confirm that fact in time for this column’s ceremonial 11:59pm publication. (Cut me some slack; it’s festival season!) But what little information I could uncover about his debut film’s 2012 Sundance premiere — a storied screening that took place as part of that year’s Park...

10 BTS Horror Movie Tricks Behind The Scariest Moments
Image
Even some of the scariest horror movies ever made needed to utilize bizarre behind-the-scenes trickery to terrify viewers. The movie industry is rife with absurd tricks that horror filmmakers use to creep out audiences. Some of these ploys are surprisingly obvious, from the infamously ubiquitous jump scare to the use of subliminal imagery first popularized by The Exorcist. However, some methods are a little stranger and lead filmmakers to use unorthodox thinking so that they can shock audiences with scares, gruesome special effects, or eerie atmospheric moments. For example, Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho famously used chocolate syrup as a stand-in for blood when fake blood didn’t look dark and scary enough.

Although Psycho left audiences reeling when the horror movie dropped its original premise halfway through the story, it was this sort of clever filmmaking that ensured the movie’s biggest shocks worked. Often, filmmakers must resort to surprisingly...

Back To The Future: The Musical Review: The Classic Time Travels To Broadway With Mixed Results
Image
This review contains spoilers for the show's visual surprises.

The original 1985 "Back to the Future" movie is a fantasy. It's a teen time travel fantasy about knocking sense into your disappointing parents and ensuring they grow into better people. It's a fantasy where "If You Put Your Mind To It, You Can Accomplish Anything" pays dividends as an adage. It's also a visual effects dream — courtesy of its director-screenwriter Robert Zemeckis and Ilm — that rode the waves of critical and commercial success, two sequels, pop culture homages, and now a "Back to the Future: The Musical."

The famed DeLorean time machine skids onto Broadway's Winter Garden stage, as the West End version dances on. Within a few blinding flashes, the vehicle pops up like magic thanks to Chris Fisher's illusion work and Tim Lutkin & Hugh Vanstone's tactful lighting. Its 3D scan designed by Tim Hatley, the DeLorean feels alive.

Robert Zemeckis in Beowulf (2007)
Back to the Future: The Musical Review: More Like Back to the Drawing Board
Robert Zemeckis in Beowulf (2007)
If you’re seeing an eight p.m. performance of Back to the Future: The Musical on Broadway, I’ve got a time-travel tip for you: Set your DeLorean for about 10:10 p.m. and hit the gas, because it’s only in the final action sequence that this meandering remodeling of Robert Zemeckis’s 1985 sci-fi classic pivots from tedious fan service to stunning stage magic.

Few shows have mastered the varied arts of cinematic recreation quite like this one. Finn Ross’s video design brings the film’s iconic scenes of warp-speed time travel to thrilling life, while lit for maximal dizzying impact by Tim Lutkin and Hugh Vanstone. The reenactment of the moment when scientist Doc Brown (Roger Bart) clambers atop a clock tower during a lightning storm while Marty McFly (Casey Likes) revs the DeLorean in the distance is a perfect marriage of design elements, with video,...

Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future (1985)
‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ Will Delight Movie Fans — but Few Others
Michael J. Fox in Back to the Future (1985)
Good news for people who grew up delighting in the weirdo charms of Marty McFly and the DeLorean: The new, two-and-a-half-hour “Back to the Future” musical — which officially opened on Broadway Thursday night — is an incredibly faithful retelling of the 1985 movie, down to classic lines (“My dad’s a peeping Tom!”) and awkward as hell relationship drama.

As for everyone else? Well, that’s where the trouble begins in this musical that, for better or worse, often feels more like an amusement park experience than an art production. The thrill ride even begins before the show officially starts, with the whole outer stage and wings set up to look like an ‘80s video game, with scrolling neon lights and mechanical sounds.

Written by Bob Gale (who originally co-wrote the film), the plot is exactly the one you remember. Everyday teenage boy Marty McFly accidentally goes back in time 30 years, thanks...

Michael J. Fox Reunites With Lea Thompson & Christopher Lloyd For ‘Back To The Future’ Musical On Broadway
Image
The original cast of Back To The Future had a mini-reunion this week at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City to promote the musical version of the classic film.

Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson gathered to support Back to the Future: The Musical and posed with the singing stars of the musical, Casey Likes and Roger Bart.

Likes plays Fox’s character, Marty McFly, while Bart plays Lloyd’s character Dr. Emmett Brown. Likes is also the third actor to play Marty McFly in the musical — Ben Joyce took on the role before him, and Olly Dobson was the first.

Bart, however, has been the musical’s Doc Brown since the beginning. He is a Tony Award winner and is a Broadway regular as he’s best known for originating the character Carmen Ghia in another musical, The Producers.

‘Back to the Future’ Reunion: Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson Attend Broadway Musical Performance
Image
Michael J. Fox came face to face with his younger self on Tuesday. Like a time-traveling scene out of “Back to the Future,” the star met Casey Likes, the young actor who plays Marty McFly in the new Broadway musical adaptation of the classic film.

Fox, Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson reunited on the red carpet at the Winter Garden Theatre, which was complete with a prop replica of the famous time-traveling DeLorean, before a benefit performance of “Back to the Future: The Musical” for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. A crowd of fans flocked to the theater and stuck through a rainy afternoon to see a pair of Marty McFlys and Doc Browns collide. Fox posed with Likes, and Lloyd shook hands with Roger Bart, who transforms into a wild-haired Doc, before the show started.

“Back to the Future: The Musical” will have its official Broadway opening on Aug.

‘Back To The Future’ Bucks Broadway’s Summertime Slide With $1.2M Weekly Gross
Image
Box office for most Broadway shows last week wilted a bit as June’s Tony glow gave way to plain old New York summer heat, though a couple newcomers were among the handful bucking the downward trend, one very impressively so.

In its second week of previews, Back To The Future: The Musical grossed a whopping $1,222,731 for just six previews, filling 99% of seats at the Winter Garden. The stage adaptation of the Michael J. Fox comedy classic starring Casey Likes and Roger Bart opens August 3.

Another recent arrival, Alex Edelman’s Just For Us also made some dollar gains, if on a smaller scale. The well-reviewed one-man show took in $348,998 for the week ending July 9, nearly $20,000 more than the previous week even with attendance down a tad. A higher average ticket price – $64.73 compared to the previous week’s $58.44 – had some impact.

Here Lies Love, which played seven previews last week...

‘Back To The Future’ Musical Revs Up Broadway Box Office With Four-Show Take Of $1M
Image
Back To The Future: The Musical landed on Broadway last week in overdrive: The stage adaptation starring Casey Likes and Roger Bart scored a dizzying $1,035,256 with just four sold-out preview performances at the Winter Garden.

The musical, which opens August 3, features a book by Bob Gale and new music and lyrics by Alan Silvestri and Glen Ballard – with additional songs from the film including “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Goode.” Direction is by John Rando, who did the same for the hit London production.

The million-dollar-tally was a solid contribution to Broadway’s total box office receipts for the week ending July 2. In all, the 33 Broadway productions grossed $33,509,406, holding steady from the previous week. Same for attendance of 272,766, with 89% of available seats filled and the average ticket price at $122.85.

Another recent arrival, Alex Edelman’s acclaimed solo show Just For Us, had a strong opening week at the Hudson,...

Disney's Hercules Musical Review: I Won't Say I'm In Love, But There's Potential
Image
Twenty years after the fan-favorite Disney Renaissance film debuted in 1997, legendary composer Alan Menken revealed that he was working on a stage adaptation of "Hercules," the tale of a young man on his road to becoming a hero and finding out where he belongs in the world. Reunited with lyricist David Zippel, the Disney Legend created a number of all-new songs to compliment a book by Kristoffer Diaz and Robert Horn for the latest musical from the House of Mouse.

A few years later in 2019, the production made its world premiere at the Delacorte Theater in New York City's Central Park with a stellar cast that featured Jelani Alladin, who originated the role of Kristoff on stage in "Frozen," as Hercules, Tony Award winner James Monroe Iglehart of "Aladdin" on Broadway as Phil, star of NBC's "Smash" Krysta Rodriguez as Meg, and, instead of revisiting the character that he...
