NBC Has Finally Decided If ‘Brilliant Minds’ Will Get a Season 2
Image
It’s been four months since Zachary Quinto (American Horror Story) shed his scrubs and clocked out after the debut season of Brilliant Minds. Since then, fans of NBC’s newest medical procedural have been waiting on pins and needles for a reveal that will tell them whether the series will return as part of the network’s fall slate. It’s been tough on those who watched other newbies like St. Denis Medical and Happy’s Place landed their renewals at the start of the year, but we’ve finally got an answer today, as NBC has chosen to continue Quinto’s tenure as neurologist Oliver Wolf.

Initially introduced to audiences as part of NBC’s fall lineup for 2024, Brilliant Minds comes from Michael Grassi, who based much of the story on the very real life of neurologist Oliver Sacks and his non-fiction book series, The Man Who Mistook...

Gwyneth Paltrow, Oliver Stone, Katie Couric Among Stars Spotted as Frieze Los Angeles 2025 Begins
Image
Just weeks after wildfires devastated southern California, a muted but refreshingly serene and warm Frieze Los Angeles opened at the Santa Monica Airport.

As airplanes roared overhead, well-heeled VIPs crowded the entrance to the massive fair, featuring more than 95 galleries from more than 20 countries, hugging and schmoozing after the uncertainty and tragedy of the fires. Despite whispers that celebrities had been encouraged by PR gurus to stay away from Thursday’s VIP preview due to optics, stars and collectors spotted included Gwyneth Paltrow, Oliver Stone, Katie Couric, Kid Cudi, Lisa Edelstein, Rosetta and Balthazar Getty, Minka Kelly, Bob and Linda Gersh, Susan Bay Nimoy, Lauren Taschen and Frieze staple Michael Chow.

But if entertainment industry folks were scarcer than usual (early reports indicated Hollywood elite were out out in full force on Friday), artists were there to support their fellow creators, including the unmistakable Takashi Murakami,...

New 'Star Trek' Short '765874 Unification' Celebrates 30th Anniversary with William Shatner & Leonard Nimoy
Image
Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Mr. Spock ( Leonard Nimoy) finally receive closure as a new short film celebrates the 30th anniversary of Star Trek Generations. During the 10-minute movie, which is titled 765874 Unification, Trekkies are treated to a what-could-have-been scenario as Kirk traverses the Nexus. Unification (below) combines live-action imagery with CGI, and both Shatner along with Nimoys widow, Susan Bay, served as producers on the new flick released by the Roddenberry Archive and Otoy.

The film begins with Kirks good friend, Gary Mitchell (Gary Lockwood) from Star Trek: The Original Series, who has already been infected by the U.S.S Enterprises contact with the Great Barrier in the television series' Shatner-led pilot, Where No Man Has Gone Before. Gary closes his eerie eyes, which reflect the god-like power he receives in that same episode thanks to his high ESPer rating. Afteward, Kirk from Generations begins a journey across the Nexus,...

Leonard Nimoy's family didn't want him to play Spock, says Susan Bay Nimoy
Image
Imagine a world without Leonard Nimoy as Mr. Spock on Star Trek: The Original Series. It's hard to fathom, isn't it? Nimoy began the role back in the 1960s and continued portraying the stoic Vulcan off and on through the 2013 movie Star Trek Into Darkness. Almost fifty years is a long time to be known as one character, but according to Nimoy's widow, Susan Bay Nimoy in an exclusive interview with People, the actor knew the part was "right for him."

But Nimoy's family wasn't on board with him taking on the role with Susan saying "his family didn't want him to do it." She added that she thought "they didn't understand his attraction to it: you know, shaving the eyebrows, wearing that Spock haircut." But she knew the character was a "perfect fit" for her husband of twenty-six years.

Every actor that takes on a Star Trek role...

Brilliant Minds Season 1, Episode 8 Review: Susan Bay Nimoy Makes Fans Think
Image
The following contains major spoilers from Brilliant Minds Season 1, Episode 8, "The Lovesick Widow," which debuted Monday, Nov. 18 on NBC. It also contains discussion of sexual content.

Brilliant Minds Season 1, Episode 8, "The Lovesick Widow," is the NBC show's most uncomfortable episode -- in both good and bad ways. It features a wonderful performance by Susan Bay Nimoy, Leonard Nimoy's widow, as patient of the week June Sullivan. And it does make the audience think about what it means to get older, particularly in regards to sex and attraction. But it's never, ever comfortable to talk about sex. And more importantly, some of the choices made in this episode seem either strange or just out of character.

"The Lovesick Widow" revolves around June, who's been kicked out of her assisted living facility for sleeping around and other erratic behavior. Her adult sons bring her to Bronx General Hospital, worried that their...

Zachary Quinto’s ‘Brilliant Minds’ Tackles Aging and Identity in Groundbreaking Episode
Brilliant Minds (2024)
The latest episode of NBC’s medical drama Brilliant Minds delves into deep themes of aging, sexuality, and self-discovery. It features a remarkable guest appearance by Susan Bay Nimoy, the widow of “Star Trek” star Leonard Nimoy.

The episode follows Dr. Oliver Wolf, played by Zachary Quinto, who meets a captivating patient named June, played by Nimoy. June, an 82-year-old woman, causes conflict with her adult children due to her increased sexual activities. This plot dives into difficult subjects such as personal autonomy and aging.

Quinto personally recommended Nimoy for the part, praising her energy and commitment. “She hasn’t acted in 30 years, but she has so much to offer,” he told me. The actor sees the show as a chance to fight prejudices about elderly people and their right to live completely.

The episode also develops Wolf’s storyline, which includes a new relationship development with Josh (Teddy Sears...

‘Brilliant Minds’ Episode 8 Recap: “The Lovesick Widow”
Image
Donna Murphy, Teddy Sears, and Zachary Quinto in ‘Brilliant Minds’ episode 8 (Photo by: Rafy/NBC)

NBC’s Brilliant Minds episode eight opens with Dr. Oliver Wolf (Zachary Quinto) thinking about what motivates us to carry on, even on our worst days. His opinion? It’s all about desire. When we get what we want, our brain gives us dopamine – the neurotransmitter that creates pleasure.

Dr. Ericka Kinney (Ashleigh Lathrop) and Dr. Jacob Nash (Spence Moore II) engage in a little flirting, but what catches Dr. Carol Pierce’s (Tamberla Perry) attention is the look that passes between Oliver and Dr. Josh Nichols (Teddy Sears).

In other news, the tension between Oliver and his mom, Dr. Muriel Landon (Donna Murphy), is so thick you could cut it with a knife.

Episode eight’s titular case involves June Sullivan (Susan Nimoy), an elderly woman whose two adult sons are concerned she may have dementia.

William Shatner has returned to Star Trek finally and it's long overdue
Image
In 1994, William Shatner appeared for the last time in a Star Trek film or series, starring once again as James T. Kirk. That year was the release of Star Trek Generations, the first film featuring the crew of The Next Generation and the last film featuring the crew of the Original Series.

It was a spiritual and literal passing of the baton, with Shatner's Kirk meeting Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Picard just before Kirk dies for good. It was the end of Shatner's run with Star Trek, and while he's done many conventions, interviews, and documentaries for Star Trek, he's never returned in a creative sense.

That is, until now. Exactly 30 years ago, Shatner took his final bow as James Kirk, walking away from the role he made famous in his early 60s. Now, in his early 90s, Shatner is back in the seat again. Though, not in the captain's chair.

William Shatner’s Captain Kirk Returns In “Unification” Short Film From Roddenberry Archive
Image
In honor of the 30th anniversary of Star Trek: Generations, the movie in which Star Trek: The Original Series' Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) breathed his last, Roddenberry Archive has released as short film that brings back...well....Kirk.

Yes, most of what you will see is CGI, but Shatner does provide voiceover in this magnificent eight-minute film. Executive produced by both Shatner and Susan Bay Nimoy, "Unification" also brings back Robin Curtis as Saavik and includes Sam Witwer as a young Kirk.

Using CGI as well as live-action footage, the film, created by both the Archive and their technology partner Otoy (in cooperation with Paramount), is the fourth in a line of short films released by Roddenberry Archive [via Trekmovie], but it's this one, with voiceover from Shatner himself that actually takes fans back to pivotal moments in Star Trek history. Not only do we see Kirk as we last saw him on Generations,...

Zachary Quinto Remains Hopeful for Spock Return Despite Star Trek 4 Stalling
Image
Actor Zachary Quinto may be focusing on his new NBC medical drama Brilliant Minds, currently but a part of him is hopeful he will once again reprise the role of Spock in another Star Trek movie. Quinto played the half-Vulcan, half-human science officer in three Kelvin Timeline movies from 2009 to 2016. He told Variety he would love to play the iconic character again.

The great thing is Star Trek is a limitless universe, Quinto said. Look at all the television shows, look at all the stories, look at all the characters and timelines. Anything is possible. That's the joy of the franchise. Thats why its lasted for 55, 60 years. Im open to it. I would love it. I would absolutely love it. The original Star Trek series premiered 58 years ago on Sept. 8, 1966, and ran for three seasons.

Leonard Nimoy's widow, Susan, cast in an episode of Zachary Quinto's "Brilliant Minds"
Image
Susan Bay Nimoy, the widow of Leonard Nimoy, began her acting career in the 1960s. For the most part, though, she stopped acting after 1998, returning only for two guest spots in 2009 and 2018. But Zachary Quinto, who played Spock on J.J. Abrams' line of Star Trek films, got close to the Nimoy family, especially Susan, while he was playing Leonard Nimoy's iconic character, and he saw an opportunity to bring her aboard his new show, "Brilliant Minds."

In "Brilliant Minds," Quinto plays a hospital neurologist who treats patients with rare mental health conditions, and he wanted Susan Nimoy to have a guest spot on the show. Susan plays an 80-year-old woman with hypersexuality, and Quinto says she "did such a great job."

She was an actress like 40 years ago. … I just know her so well, and I know where she is in her life. She’s 81 years old. She’s...

Leonard Nimoy's Widow Susan to Guest Star on Zachary Quinto's NBC Series
Image
Susan Bay Nimoy, the widow of Leonard Nimoy, will soon guest star on Zachary Quintos new medical drama, Brilliant Minds. The actress will play quite an unconventional character. Nimoy, 81, will portray an 80-year-old nymphomaniac, on the series premiering Sept. 23 on NBC and Peacock, Quinto told Variety.

Quinto played the iconic Spock in the Kelvin Timeline movies starting in 2009. The character was made famous by Leonard Nimoy in the 1966 original Star Trek series as well as Star Trek: The Animated Series and the Star Trek movies. Nimoy also played Spock in the Kelvin movies. Quinto became close to the Nimoys during the time he was playing Spock and working with Nimoy on the J.J. Abrams films. He said playing Spock was one of the most significant experiences of my career.

Mr. Spock On A Stamp: Adam Schiff Urges U.S. Postal Service To Honor Leonard Nimoy
Image
Rep. Adam Schiff (D-ca) is urging the U.S. Postal Service honor Leonard Nimoy with a commemorative stamp.

In a statement, Schiff called Nimoy, who died in 2015, “an extraordinary activist, actor and friend.”

“Nimoy’s legacy includes his lengthy acting career — including his beloved and iconic role as ‘Spock’ in the Star Trek universe — and his many generous contributions to the arts and sciences, and his beautiful family.”

On Monday, Schiff sent a letter to the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee, asking them to recommend Nimoy to the Postmaster General. The committee selects individuals who have made “extraordinary and enduring contributions to American society, history, culture or environment.” Living people are not currently eligible, and those who are deceased are considered at least three years after his or hear death. Stamps also are planned two- to three- years in advance.

‘This Changes Everything’ Film Review: Hollywood Women Discuss Upping Their Ranks, on Both Sides of the Camera
Kathryn Bigelow
It seems like every time the subject of gender parity in Hollywood comes up, the conversation immediately becomes about sharing and dissecting the dismal stats we’ve already seen countless times before. Those include: only 11 women of color had lead roles in films last year, and only one female filmmaker has ever won an Oscar for Best Director. Not to mention, 92% of directors of 2018’s top-grossing domestic releases were male, even though 2017 proved that the top 100 films with female leads made 38% more money. Then the enraging discussion inevitably reaches a dead end because, despite decades of case studies and reporting, these numbers have barely budged.

So when director Tom Donahue (“Casting By”) begins to echo these statistics early on in “This Changes Everything,” you think it’s going to be another fruitless conversation about the lack of equality in Hollywood. That concern is intensified as we see interviews with women...

UCLA Buys Crest Theater, Will Become The Nimoy Theater Honoring Leonard Nimoy
The UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture and its performing arts program, the Center for the Art of Performance at UCLA, has acquired the Crest Theater on Westwood Boulevard.

The landmark venue will be transformed into a new off-campus performing arts space that will serve as an important addition to UCLA’s cultural venues and resources across the city.

UCLA’s purchase of the long-dormant theater was made possible by major gifts from actor, writer and director Susan Bay Nimoy and an anonymous donor. To raise the additional funds needed for the renovations and the establishment of a program endowment, Cap UCLA is launching a new campaign fueled by a gift that will match all donations up to $2.5 million in support of the new theater.

With an anticipated opening date in 2021, the venue will be re-named the UCLA Nimoy Theater, in honor of Nimoy’s late husband, Leonard Nimoy.

Last week, the cast of Star Trek Beyond appeared in a set video to announce their Omaze contest, where one lucky fan will win a walk-on role in the sci-fi sequel. While that lucky winner will be announced at a later date, the contest is also selecting weekly winners to become honorary "crew members," the first of which has already been chosen. To kick off the campaign's second week, stars Simon Pegg (Scotty) and his "son" Anton Yelchin (Chekov) appear in another Omaze video, where they announce the first honorary crew member, and give fans a glimpse at one of the new alien masks that will be used in the film, along with a few props.

Nothing was revealed about this alien mask or any of the other futuristic props seen in this latest sneak peek, but there will surely be more opportunities to catch a few glimpses from the set in weeks to come.

For three seasons in the 1960s and in rerun heaven, the voyage of the Starship Enterprise captivated viewers and was resurrected in a highly popular film series. Nimoy also was a photographer, director, writer and...
