Exclusive: Producer Paul Zaentz and director Devin Adair are working on a feature adaptation of Luke Barr’s nonfiction book Provence, 1970: M.F.K Fisher, Julia Child, James Beard, And The Reinvention Of American Taste.

Adair is writing a script for the film. Set in Provence, France, during Christmas in 1970, the 2013 book follows a gathering between six acclaimed culinary figures, who cooked, ate, argued, and talked about the future of food in the US, the meaning of taste, and the limits of snobbery.

“It’ll be a small dinner movie like My Dinner With Andre or Babette’s Feast,” Zaentz told Screen...

The Casa Bonita Menu Gets an Unofficial Power Ranking with a Surprise Top Dish
Image
Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s massively renovated and revitalized Casa Bonita is still in its soft opening phase, but Colorado’s food critics are already prepared to crown a top entrée to be ravenously devoured while the Lakewood police close in.

Back in March, the international South Park fandom learned that the waitlist to get a table at Casa Bonita during the pre-grand-opening stage of Parker and Stone’s eight-figure relaunch counted 600,000 potential patrons waiting eagerly for their turn to tour the towering pink temple of tacos and entertainment. Over the last five months, that number has certainly grown faster than Casa Bonita can seat its patient guests, so those of us who are champing at the bit to plan our pilgrimage to Lakewood, Colorado to experience a more luxurious, less felonious version of Eric Cartman’s dinner-and-a-show speed run in the iconic 2003 South Park episode “Casa Bonita” probably...

David E. Kelley Finds ‘Hope In The Water’ In His First Documentary Project, Pairing Him With Shailene Woodley, Martha Stewart & More
Image
As a screenwriter, David E. Kelley is used to injecting social commentary into his material — not unlike the way the ancient Greeks entered the city of Troy. But when the creator of shows like The Practice, Big Little Lies and Ally McBeal made his foray into documentary filmmaking – with the ocean sustainability-themed Hope in the Water — the Trojan Horse method of educating was no longer applicable. “If you would leave me to my devices, I probably would’ve had a floating dead body, to talk about the biosecurity risk of people being beheaded in our oceans, but it was not going to be this kind of series,” jokes the prolific producer. “I didn’t proffer that idea. They didn’t ask for it – maybe because they were worried I might suggest something like that.”

Hope in the Water, a three-part series from PBS, takes a far less salacious approach to...

Mark Peel, Campanile Co-Founder Who Appeared on ‘Top Chef Masters,’ Dies at 66
Image
Mark Peel, the influential longtime Los Angeles chef and restaurateur who founded Campanile with his ex-wife Nancy Silverton, died Sunday in Los Angeles. He was 66.

His daughter told the Los Angeles Times that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer just nine days ago.

Peel appeared twice on “Top Chef Masters” and was a “Top Chef” judge in 2009 and 2010. He also made appearances on shows such as “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Knife Fight” and “Kitchen Nightmares.”

For 23 years, James Beard-award winning Campanile was a favorite spot for Hollywood power lunches and celebratory dinners. Built on La Brea Avenue in a historic building that was built for Charlie Chaplin’s offices, Campanile closed in 2012 and the building now houses Republique.

Bobby Flay in Food Network Star (2005)
We're Dishing Out the Best Secrets About Beat Bobby Flay
Bobby Flay in Food Network Star (2005)
A Michelin star is nice. A James Beard, pretty great as well. But for some chefs nothing feels quite as sweet as besting Bobby Flay. Since 2013, the Iron Chef, a three-time James Beard honoree himself, has been taking on challengers with his Food Network series, Beating Bobby Flay, a natural extension of the head-to-head face-offs he engaged in on Iron Chef and Throwdown With Bobby Flay. The show's recipe is fairly easy. Each half-hour episode starts with two cooks battling it out to create a meal using a featured ingredient. Once a winner has been determined by the guest judges—everyone from Chrissy Teigen to Sophia...

Inside TV’s New Wave of Weird and Wacky Unscripted With ‘Dishmantled,’ ‘Don’t,’ ‘Holey Moley’
Image
At the beginning of each episode of Quibi’s wild “Dishmantled” food competition series, host Tituss Burgess punches a big red button to activate a cannon that splatters a pair of chefs from head-to-toe with a mysterious dish.

The chefs then have to re-create the meal that was blasted at them based on taste and touch, before presenting their effort to Burgess and a panel of guest judges. The series is a six-minute smash in the face of food, color and craziness.

Just as the dishes of pesto pasta and shepherd’s pie are de-constructed for the chefs to figure out, traditional unscripted programming has been taken apart and put back together in increasingly creative, but also off-kilter, ways.

And it’s not just competition programs such as “Dishmantled” getting this larger-than-life treatment in a quest to draw in viewers whose attention is constantly pulled in a million new directions.

Jacques Pepin Talks Daytime Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award: ‘I Was Flabbergasted’
The specific ingredients of Jacques Pépin’s Lifetime Achievement Award acceptance speech at this year’s Daytime Emmys are unknown, but count on a dash or two of modesty.

The world-famous chef says he was deeply touched when he was told the honor — the first to go to someone in the cooking genre — was being bestowed upon him.

“It’s amazing because the food world has not been recognized much at this level,” Pépin says. “When I spoke to David Michaels [the senior vice president of daytime at the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences], I told him I’d like to thank whoever nominated me. I was flabbergasted.”

Born in Bourg-en-Bresse, France, in 1935, Pépin developed a passion and respect for cooking after his mother, Jeannette, opened a restaurant, Le Pélican. As a young man, he worked at Le Plaza Athénée in Paris where a chef pal regaled Pépin with stories of life in Washington, D.C.

In 1959, his dream of visiting America came true.
