While Anton Chekhov always thought of The Seagull as a comedy, that fact has frequently been forgotten through productions that fall into the soporific trap set by angsty, moping, lovelorn characters losing their hearts and minds in the Russian countryside.

There’s no such danger with Thomas Ostermeier, who once declared that he wanted to bring “some rock ‘n’ roll” to Ibsen (his Enemy of the People had the protagonist play Bowie covers in a band and open a political discussion with the audience). The firebrand German director now blasts the cobwebs off Chekhov with boisterous, dazzling delight.

“The Diplomat” star Rory Kinnear has joined Will Sharpe and Paul Bettany in Joe Barton’s upcoming Sky limited series “Amadeus.”

Based on the story of famed composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Sharpe stars as the virtuoso while Bettany plays his fierce rival, Italian composer Antonio Salieri.

Kinnear, who is also known for his turns in “Skyfall” and “Men” has been cast as Emperor Joseph.

Tom Durant Pritchard (The Crown) has joined the cast of PBS' Miss Scarlet series for season five. The series was previously titled Miss Scarlet and The Duke, but the name was shortened following the departure of Stuart Martin, aka William "The Duke" Wellington, after four seasons. The fifth season of the period drama is currently in production.

If the expectation for holiday season programming is treacle and sentiment, Hulu’s new comedy Such Brave Girls is like a scorpion in your stocking.

In a good way.

Coming in just under the wire to cement creator-star Kat Sadler as one of the year’s breakthrough talents, Such Brave Girls is a hilarious slice of family dysfunction, focusing on a trio of women whose only connection is their trauma and, you know, shared DNA.

Especially in the first half of its six-episode run, it would be possible to reject Such Brave Girls as repetitively narcissistic, when the truth is that it’s more accurately a spin on a familiar type of British comedy, one populated by characters defined exclusively by their damage. It’s a genre in which the best examples are shows like Fleabag or Feel Good and the worst are lost to the cultural scrapheap.

Exclusive: There’s some seriously scary stuff going on at London’s National Theatre as the venue prepares for a musical version of Roald Dahl’s The Witches that will feature book and lyrics by playwright Lucy Kirkwood, who’s also an executive consultant on Succession.

Music and lyrics are by Dave Malloy, who won acclaim for the book and score he wrote for Broadway show Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812.

The show is a co-production between the National and the Roald Dahl Story Company.

Sky1 has confirmed the launch date for new series Critical.

The medical drama will premiere on the channel on Tuesday, February 24.

The 13-part series is told in real-time like 24 and focuses on a hospital's trauma unit.

The series is written by Line of Duty's Jed Mercurio and reunites him with actor Lennie James, who stars as trauma consultant Glen Boyle.

The show also stars Catherine Walker (Strike Back), Claire Skinner (Outnumbered) and Kimberley Nixon (Fresh Meat).

The Critical cast is completed by Neve McIntosh, Prasanna Puwanarajah, John MacMillan, Ellen Thomas, Mali Harries, Paul Bazely, Danny Kirrane, Peter Sullivan, Emma Fryer, Orion Lee and Juliet Oldfield.

Critical is Mercurio's first medical drama since his work on Bodies in 2006. He also wrote Cardiac Arrest for the BBC between 1994 and 1996.

Lennie James has signed up to star in Sky1's new medical drama Critical.

The Line of Duty star has been cast as trauma consultant Glen Boyle in the ensemble drama, which takes place in real-time over each one-hour episode.

Strike Back actress Catherine Walker will play trauma registrar Fiona Lomas, while Outnumbered's Claire Skinner will appear as trauma consultant Lorraine Rappaport.

Fresh Meat star Kimberley Nixon has signed up to play junior doctor 'Harry' Bennett-Edwardes.

Created by Line of Duty's Jed Mercurio, the 13-part series, set in a state-of-the-art Major Trauma Centre, will focus on a different story during each episode.

The drama will follow the team of medical professionals as they make knife-edge decisions that could mean the difference between whether a patient lives or dies.

This Sunday sees Doctor Who and his trusty Tardis landing in our living rooms for the Christmas special.

It's called The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe and beyond the obvious hints towards the Narnia classic, we know Steven Moffat's tale is set during the Second World War when a widow and her two children flee London for Dorset. There they meet an eccentric caretaker and discover a portal into a winter wonderland.

The BBC has confirmed that this year's Doctor Who Christmas special will air on December 25. The sci-fi drama will retain its traditional Christmas Day slot for the seventh year running, airing at 7pm on BBC One. Benidorm star Hugh Sachs has said that the comedy series is successful because viewers recognise themselves in the characters. Speaking on ITV1's This Morning, Sachs's co-star Paul Bazely also credited the show's writer Derren Litten for its popularity.
