In the post-austerity landscape of contemporary Britain, where mental health awareness campaigns plaster bus stops while NHS waiting lists stretch into infinity, Kat Sadler’s “Such Brave Girls” emerges as something of a cultural autopsy. This BBC Three series, now in its second season, presents itself as comedy but functions as anthropological study—a dissection of working-class family dynamics filtered through the lens of what we might call “post-therapeutic realism.”
Sadler, who both creates and stars in this venture, has crafted something that sits uncomfortably between memoir and fiction, drawing from her own experiences with mental health to construct a narrative that refuses the sanitized comfort of conventional dramedy. Set in Crawley (that monument to post-war planning optimism now calcified into suburban ennui), the series follows the continuing dissolution of the three-woman household comprising mother Deb and daughters Josie and Billie.

Exclusive: The London Barbican Theatre’s scintillating production of Anton Chekhov’s The Seagull, boasting an all-star ensemble led by Cate Blanchett, Tom Burke and Emma Corrin and directed by the estimable Berlin-based Thomas Ostermeier, is setting course for New York in 2026, multiple sources inform me.
The play, adapted by Duncan Macmillan and Ostermeier, is propelled by blasts of oomph. It feels so marvelously fresh that it could have been written today. Indeed, Macmillan and Ostermeier keep on eye on current events and amend their script as and when significant news emerges.
Like, on Thursday night, Jason Watkin’s Sorin made a point about the “f*cking high tariffs” he has to pay on his country estate’s farm produce, a clear reference to the tariffs introduced Wednesday by the Trump administration.

While Anton Chekhov always thought of The Seagull as a comedy, that fact has frequently been forgotten through productions that fall into the soporific trap set by angsty, moping, lovelorn characters losing their hearts and minds in the Russian countryside.
There’s no such danger with Thomas Ostermeier, who once declared that he wanted to bring “some rock ‘n’ roll” to Ibsen (his Enemy of the People had the protagonist play Bowie covers in a band and open a political discussion with the audience). The firebrand German director now blasts the cobwebs off Chekhov with boisterous, dazzling delight.
But as irreverent as Ostermeier may seem — as self-referential, ironic, meta, playful — he’s true to his material. The reality of The Seagull is that it treads that fine line between comedy and tragedy. And while this production is an incredible blast, teetering on farce, Ostermeier and co-adaptor Duncan Macmillan (People, Places...

If the expectation for holiday season programming is treacle and sentiment, Hulu’s new comedy Such Brave Girls is like a scorpion in your stocking.
In a good way.
Coming in just under the wire to cement creator-star Kat Sadler as one of the year’s breakthrough talents, Such Brave Girls is a hilarious slice of family dysfunction, focusing on a trio of women whose only connection is their trauma and, you know, shared DNA.
Especially in the first half of its six-episode run, it would be possible to reject Such Brave Girls as repetitively narcissistic, when the truth is that it’s more accurately a spin on a familiar type of British comedy, one populated by characters defined exclusively by their damage. It’s a genre in which the best examples are shows like Fleabag or Feel Good and the worst are lost to the cultural scrapheap.
Hopefully, thanks...

For stand-up comedians accustomed to mining their personal lives for material, writing a semi-autobiographical sitcom is practically a rite of passage. The latest series to join that illustrious tradition is Kat Sadler and Lizzie Davidson’s Such Brave Girls, a punchy comedy that concerns the dysfunctional lives of sisters Josie (Sadler) and Billie and their single mother, Deb (Louise Brealey). Viewers quickly learn that Josie and Billie’s father went out to get teabags 10 years ago and never came back, leaving the siblings and their mother with a pile of debt and a slew of abandonment issues.
All three women suffer from a compulsive need to hold down the men in their lives. Billie is on a mission to win back ex-boyfriend Nicky (Sam Buchanan), who’s more interested in partying than he is in her. Because of her abandonment issues, Josie feels that she needs a stable boyfriend, even...

Warning: Major Spoilers For Citadel Season 1 Ahead! Now Citadel season 1 has come to an end, there are still plenty of unanswered questions that season 2 must answer. Amazon's Citadel is poised to be the beginning of a major new franchise for the streamer, and in addition to an already confirmed second season, it has multiple international spinoffs in the works. This includes the next chapter Citadel: Diana, which is set in Italy and will arrive in 2024. Citadel's finale "Secrets In Night Need Early Rains" promised to feature some major revelations - and it kept that promise.
Despite framing her as a potential traitor, Citadel confirmed Priyanka Chopra's Nadia wasn't the mole in episode 5. Citadel's finale confirmed it was actually Richard Madden's Mason, who gave up information on the agency to main villain Dahlia (Lesley Manville). It also revealed that Dahlia is Mason/Kyle's estranged mother, and those...

Warning: Major Spoilers For Citadel Episodes 1-5 Below! After teasing the mystery for several episodes, Citadel has finally confirmed whether or not Nadia was the mole who destroyed the spy agency. It's hard to believe Citadel is already near the end of its run. Despite costing an estimated $300 million to produce - making it one of the most expensive TV shows ever made - Citadel season 1 consists of a mere six episodes. That said, if Amazon's ambitious plan to create a bunch of international Citadel spinoffs bears fruit, viewers will be seeing a lot more of the franchise in the near future.
From the beginning, Citadel has set itself up as a twisty thriller where nothing is what it seems. Mason Kane (Richard Madden) may have been portrayed as an arrogant, cocky secret agent, but it was assumed he was fundamentally on the side of good. Citadel episode 4 destroyed that image,...

Making its world debut out in Berlin back in the spring, Jadoo is just a few weeks away from arriving on our shores, and has its sights on becoming the best British-Asian comedy since Four Lions.
With its 6th September release date on our shores very much on the horizon, we’ve exclusively got the film’s new poster to share, which will hopefully be arriving on the Underground and in bus shelters soon.
Jadoo, in cinemas, 6th Sept, is a British-made film set in Leicester, and tells the story of two brothers, Raja (Harish Patel – Run Fatboy Run) and Jagi (Kulvinder Ghir – Bend it Like Beckham). Both wonderful chefs, who fall out so catastrophically that in the climax of their dispute they rip the family recipe book in half: one brother gets the starters and the other gets the main courses. They set up rival restaurants, on opposite sides...

It's two days after Christmas and having recovered after the annual bloated festive hoopla, it's back to the sofa for the lucky repeat of this year's festive Who offering. It begins with a great big flamey bang – coming straight after the repeat omnibus of EastEnders, I'm convinced that somehow slimy freak Yusef has survived the devastating inferno at Patrick Trueman's B&B and gone on to wreak pyromaniacal havoc aboard a spaceship. We're never told, but The Doctor's in big, big trouble here – the only way out is to grab hold of a handy protective spacesuit and float towards the Earth like a futuristic version of the Bullseye mascot.
Compare that to the two approaches to the Christmas specials. Russell T Davies, for the most part, looked to familiar movies and movie genres for his Crimbo tales – Independence Day for The Christmas Invasion , screwball comedies for The Runaway Bride and...

The episode begins with the Doctor (Matt Smith) on a spaceship (nothing new) which is exploding around him. 'Intruder alert' sounds and the Doctor in yet more mayhem, as he reaches for the spacesuit and can't get hold of it. He drops from the ship and freefalls behind the suit, finally catching up to it and putting it on before he reaches Earth. This episode was anything but chaos, aside from the opening; it was more serene, appropriate for the time of year. The Doctor is found in the field by a woman, he thinks he's blind, but he's got his helmet on the wrong way round. The woman returns home and gives a message to her son, Cyril (Maurice Cole) for their father. She thinks she's found an angel in the field and she's taking the car. She drops the Doctor off at a Policebox. The impact suit is...

This Sunday sees Doctor Who and his trusty Tardis landing in our living rooms for the Christmas special.
It's called The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe and beyond the obvious hints towards the Narnia classic, we know Steven Moffat's tale is set during the Second World War when a widow and her two children flee London for Dorset. There they meet an eccentric caretaker and discover a portal into a winter wonderland.
On the set of the upcoming episode, Matt Smith and the show's seasonal special guests gave some clues about what's in store.
I should add that there aren't any significant plot spoilers ahead, though the pictures featured here do reveal some of the costume and set designs, so read on at your own risk.
Matt, who's played the Doctor for two years now, explains: "Last year, it felt like a Christmas romp in many ways.

Benidorm star Hugh Sachs has said that the comedy series is successful because viewers recognise themselves in the characters. Speaking on ITV1's This Morning, Sachs's co-star Paul Bazely also credited the show's writer Derren Litten for its popularity. "I think people just recognise themselves - we don't behave very well on holiday as a nation and I don't think there's that many sitcoms about the vast majority of people," Sachs said. "Lots of people go on holiday and have rows in public." Bazely added: "I think that [what] Derren Litten captures very well is that you go on holiday (more)...
