Jag Season 1 showcased Navy legal proceedings and explored military ethics with devoted characters, forming a cornerstone for the series. Jag Season 2 introduced Catherine Bell as Mac, establishing an iconic dynamic partnership and delving into political and controversial cases. Jag Season 7 thrived after 9/11, capturing the positive and negative facets of military life and featuring compelling story arcs.
While Jag is celebrated for its distinctive narrative and compelling characters, the quality of its seasons varies noticeably. Some stand out for their intricate storytelling, character development, and gripping legal cases. Others fell short due to changes in the cast, shifts in focus, or weak storytelling. That said, the show's ability to maintain its unique identity while navigating these fluctuations in quality is a testament to its enduring appeal.
Despite a shaky start following its first season, Jag displayed remarkable resilience, enduring for an additional nine seasons, and later kickstarting the NCIS franchise. Overcoming initial challenges,...

"It's nobody's fault. And everybody's responsibility." Gravitas Ventures has released the trailer for an indie "surreal mystery" drama titled The Rainbow Experiment, which first premiered at the Slamdance Film Festival (the anti-Sundance fest that takes place at the same time/place) at the beginning of this year. This trailer has been out for a while, but we haven't featured it yet, and the film is opening in just a few weeks. The Rainbow Experiment is about how things spiral out of control in a high school in Manhattan when a terrible accident involving a science experiment injures a kid for life. Starring Christian Coulson, Kevin Kane, Chris Beetem, Vandit Bhatt, Francis Benhamou, and more. Watch the trailer if you're curious. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Christina Kallas' The Rainbow Experiment, from YouTube: The story takes place in a high school where things spiral out of control when...

Google the words “rainbow experiment chemistry” and the internet will provide a wealth of seemingly kid-friendly directives for how to use science to “make a rainbow,” an idea that seems fun enough until another link pops up: a safety alert from the American Chemical Society about an experiment gone very, very wrong.
It’s that sort of tension — between the possibility of academic discovery and out-and-out terror — that frames up Christina Kallas’ Slamdance drama, “The Rainbow Experiment,” which follows what happens after one of those eponymous experiments leads to unexpected consequences, one that indict and unravel whole scores of people and institutions.

The second feature written and directed by Lisa Robinson and Annie J. Howell (“Small, Beautifully Moving Parts”),”Claire in Motion” has an appealing stillness and intensity. It works as both a quiet, meditative study of grief and a muted examination of identity, but not as a compelling mystery. We first meet the low-key academic Claire (Betsy Brandt, “Breaking Bad”) in the lowest key of positions — lying down, half asleep. She rouses somewhat to bid her husband Paul (Chris Beetem, “Inside Amy Schumer”), a fellow professor at a small Ohio college, goodbye as he heads out on a solo backpacking trip.

After co-starring in “Breaking Bad,” actress Betsy Brandt has stayed in the spotlight with a host of TV projects, including a starring role in the CBS sitcom “Life in Pieces,” as well as a new missing person drama “Claire in Motion.” Brandt stars as Claire who hasn’t given up on searching for her missing husband despite her son’s doubts and the police closing their investigation. Soon, Claire discovers troubling secrets about her husband, including a mysterious graduate student with whom he had formed a close bond, and starts to loser her grip on her own identity. The film co-stars Anna Margaret Hollyman (“Sleeping with Other People”), Chris Beetem (“Black Hawk Down”) and Sakina Jaffrey (“Mr. Robot”). Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

Too heavy-handed and clumsy to land with a real knockout punch, Annie J. Howell and Lisa Robinson’s second feature benefits immensely from the quietly moving work of its lead, Besty Brandt. The former “Breaking Bad” star is the eponymous Claire of Howell and Robinson’s “Claire in Motion,” a film about the messier aspects of grief and loss that shines only when it pulls back from its worrying tendency to hit themes so firmly on the head its a wonder they don’t start bleeding.
“Be careful,” Claire whispers to her husband Paul (Chris Beetem) as he slips out of their home to partake in his apparent favorite past time — a solo survivalist hiking trip into the woods, during which he’ll tote the bare minimum of supplies and only eat what he can find and hunt — an understandable sentiment made all the more crucial by her mention of Paul’s previous dizzy spells.

A slow-burn twist on the home-invasion story with a creepily classy atmosphere of dread and menace, but where it ends up is the stuff of hoary cliché. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

As the saying goes, politics makes for strange bedfellows. Or in the cast of Maggie (Christina Ricci) and Congressman Rawlings (Chris Beetem) on "Pan Am," bedfellows make for strange politics.
During the Jan. 8 episode of the period drama, the more than opinionated Maggie submitted an anonymous editorial to the Village Voice railing against the representative's hypocrisy. But after a pleasant lunch with Rawlings, Maggie fell for him. Of course there's still the lingering issue of that article.
On Sunday's (Jan. 15) show, Rawlings is none too pleased after reading the piece that calls him out on his double standards. He says, "I don't appreciate sources with 'inside knowledge' conspiring with the enemy," not realizing the "enemy" is right in front of him. Maggie is now focused on steering him in any direction that doesn't point toward her.
In other "Pan Am" news, Kate (Kelli Garner) tries to help out a couple of stewardesses mistaken for spies.

The crew of "Pan Am" traveled to London Sunday (Dec. 4)...well almost all of them. Dean and Colette take their own adventure, but we'll get to that in a moment.
Kate (Kelli Garner) is sore at the CIA about the Nico Lanza thing when the Yugoslavian diplomat essentially got blackmailed into spying for the Feds. So she's understandably reluctant to get involved in any more snooping. But Kate is a little like Al Pacino in "Godfather 3." She could easily say, "Just when I thought I was out...they pull me back in." This means a new adventure for her involving a Soviet bad guy. Nice to see Kate's willing to give it another shot.
Maggie (Christina Ricci), the free-spirited one of the crew, befriends a U.S. Congressman (Chris Beetem) who is en route to making a pro-nuke speech. Perhaps "befriends" is a bit of an understatement. They get along great,...

Remember when a celebrity starring in a PSA was usually a condition of their probation for a D.U.I. or drug charge?
A thing of the past. Now it's cool for actors to tell us what we should be doing. Unfortunately, all the cool causes -- literacy, volunteering, heart health -- have been done to death.
Not that that's going to stop CBS. Neither is the fact that The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recently issued new recommendations stating that annual pap smears are no longer a necessary part of most women's health regime.
Check out actor Josh Pais (who is not on the cast of a CBS show), telling us how when you're stuck for a gift for the woman in your life, a visit to the gyno is the way to go. After all, "Just a schmear could save her life."
All of this is true.

We here at Cinematical usually dive head first into movies when we take on Sundance, but there's so much else going on here -- like panels, concerts, parties and ridiculous film critic fist fights. So while we finish up our coverage of this year's festival, feel free to scroll through the giant photo gallery below and catch up on all the action that was the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
