The talk/variety series “Real Time with Bill Maher,” hosted by Bill Maher, has been running for nearly two decades now, and is showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, HBO has already renewed the series to continue through 2026. So don’t expect Maher to leave airwaves anytime soon.

Theaters are brimming over with an army of well-reviewed and buzzy indie films. But, in an unusual state of affairs, pretty much all of them are in wide release, meaning Terrifier 3, Piece by Piece, Saturday Night and The Apprentice, as well as animated My Hero Academia: You’re Next. Limited openings are few — a trio of quality documentaries, A24’s We Live In Time, a couple of Academy runs and a faith-based Mormon film on Brigham Young’s ascendance. There also are a half-dozen Indian films in limited to moderate release.

Thirty-one years after taking center stage in D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus’ “The War Room,” crafty, straight-talking Democratic political strategist James Carville is the star of another documentary, Matt Tyrnauer’s “Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid”
The movie, which was acquired by CNN Films shortly before its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival, will open theatrically on Oct. 11 via Greenwich Entertainment.
“Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid” chronicles an 18-month period in which the Ragin’ Cajun spearheaded efforts to persuade President Joe Biden not to run for re-election in 2024. The doc follows Carville, famously known for coining the phrase “It’s the economy, stupid” during Bill Clinton’s 1992 campaign, as he travels across the country to talk politics. The doc also delves into Carville’s personal life with his wife, Republican strategist Mary Matalin, who, in the doc, admits that the two didn’t speak for a stretch due...

‘Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid’ Lands Theatrical Distribution From Greenwich Entertainment

The documentary premiered at the Telluride Film Festival, and CNN Films will broadcast “Carville” on Oct. 5 on the network. Greenwich will release “Carville” in select theaters across the country starting in New York on Oct. 11 and in Los Angeles Oct. 25, among other cities.

There is one problem with the lively new James Carville documentary, Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid, premiering at Telluride: For much of the film, Carville worries about the dangers of having Joe Biden as the Democratic presidential candidate.
Obviously, the movie (which was acquired by CNN Films) was conceived and filmed before Biden dropped out of the race. During the last year, long before the June debate with Trump, Carville was deeply concerned that Biden’s presence on the ballot could cost the Democrats the election. That all changed on July 21st, when Biden dropped out. But by then, the film was close to completion. A brief end title reports the news of Harris’ ascension, yet the film still seems skewed.
Nevertheless, it provides some great background on Carville and certainly convinces us that he is one of the most colorful figures on the scene today — and still making noise.

After former President Donald Trump was found guilty of 34 counts of fraud, CNN anchors Boris Sanchez and Brianna Keilar invited former Trump Press Secretary Hogan Gidley and political commentator Paul Begala to discuss the verdict.
The segment, which was meant to focus on the historic verdict, turned into Begala’s tirade against Trump’s physical appearance. Gidley later commented on current President Joe Biden‘s cognitive state. Sanchez and Keilar attempted to redirect the conversation. Eventually, both Begala and Gidley had their air time cut after the two did not stop their personal comments on Trump and Biden.
After Begala claimed he felt some “pity” for Trump, he threw a jab at the former president’s appearance. “I mean, he’s an obese, flatulent old man with bad makeup and weird hair who had to sit in a courtroom and listen to a porn star testify about how bad he is in bed.

In response to the online backlash he’s received for his criticism of President Joe Biden, Daily Show host Jon Stewart has decided to take a masterclass in speaking truth to power — and who better to emulate than his old pal Tucker Carlson?
It has been 19 years since the Daily Show host went on CNN’s Crossfire and took Carlson and co-host Paul Begala to task for fomenting partisan discord. After Carlson remarked that Stewart was funnier on his Comedy Central series, Stewart shot back, “You’re as big a d–k on your show as you are on any show.

Bill Maher was angry that certain messages get attention and certain others do not on his Friday Real Time show on HBO.
He led off with a prime example of that in an interview with Alexandra Pelosi (daughter of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi), the director and producer of the HBO Original documentary The Insurrectionist Next Door, which debuted October 15.
The film talks to several people who stormed the Capitol building on Jan. 6 about what brought them to Washington, D.C. on that fateful day, and whether their views have shifted since.
Maher noted that the people in the film are “remarkably relatable and likable.”
“It’s the forgotten man,” Pelosi said. “They fell behind this great American dream, they’re feeling left behind.”

Holidays were much on the mind of Real Time host Bill Maher on Friday. He talked about the Super Bowl, Election Day, and Valentine’s Day during the course of the show, starting right at the top by acknowledging this weekend’s big game.
“The game is in Arizona, so don’t be shocked if Republicans don’t accept the results,” he quipped, adding, “The game is on Fox, with aerial coverage by China.”
Maher quickly shifted back into his wheelhouse of politics, noting this weeks’s State of the Union address. “The state of our union is uncivil,” he claimed. “Republicans acted like it was a bachelorette party at a comedy club.”
Maher’s panel discussion with Kristen Soltis Anderson, pollster and host of SiriusXM’s “The Trendline with Kristen Soltis Anderson,” and Democratic strategist and CNN political contributor Paul Begala dove into the question of who will be...

Abortion is certainly no laughing matter, which makes it a delicate dance for a topical comedian to broach. Bill Maher worked both sides of the street on Friday night’s Real Time on HBO, starting with a few quips and then embarking on a serious discussion on the ultra-sensitive issue.
Starting with a riff on Cinco de Mayo – “If you can’t remember what you did last night, you might want to get an abortion now” – Maher noted several states with ultra-restrictive laws. “Suddenly, getting the right pronoun doesn’t seem so big.”
On the bright side, those in states with draconian abortion laws can use the car pool lane if driving to another territory, Maher said.
The panel discussion featured Democratic strategist and CNN political contributor Paul Begala and former NBC sports reporter and guest co-host for The View,” Michele Tafoya.

Former President Bill Clinton is launching a second season of his iHeart podcast Why Am I Telling You This? on Thursday, with singer-songwriter Jason Isbell as his first guest.

Isbell has been adamant about having a set of Covid protocols at his concerts that include proof of vaccinations or recent negative tests, something that drew scorn from some of his fans, with some performances canceled, yet praise from others.

Matthew McConaughey just might end up becoming the governor of Texas. At this time, the actor known for True Detective among many other acclaimed roles is not officially running for office, though he's previously toyed with the idea in interviews. At one point, Matthew McConaughey went so far as to say that running for governor was "a true consideration," but it was unclear if he had actually looked into the possibility, or if he'd taken any real steps toward launching a genuine campaign.
According to a new report from Politico, McConaughey has since been quietly making phone calls to influential names in the Texas political circles. This includes calls to a "deep-pocketed moderate Republican" and an "energy CEO," reportedly to "take their temperature on the race and to talk about seriously throwing his hat in the ring." Prof. Alan Dershowitz filed a libel suit against CNN on Tuesday, seeking $300 million for allegedly taking a quote out of context during the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.
Dershowitz defended Trump from the charge that he had abused his power by leaning on Ukraine to open an investigation of Joe Biden’s son. On Jan. 29, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, asked Dershowitz if it mattered whether there was a “quid pro quo.”
“The only thing that would make a quid pro quo unlawful is if the quo were in some way illegal,” Dershowitz argued. “If a president does something which he believes will help him get elected in the public interest, that cannot be the kind of quid pro quo that results in impeachment.”
Rep. Adam Schiff, who was leading the House impeachment case, immediately pounced on Dershowitz’s comment, saying that his position would give the president “carte blanche.

Bill Maher called the Clintons “huge distractions” and wondered Friday if and how the Democrats should deploy them in the presidential campaign.
“Now, Bill Clinton — people are saying that there are witnesses who saw him on Jeffrey Epstein’s sex island. Obviously it’s denied,” Maher said on HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher.
Guest Paul Begala shrugged it off. Said Maher, “You shake your head like that. ‘Oh, that’s impossible. Bill Clinton, a horny guy on sex island? Ridiculous…’ Look, it’s possible.”
Bill Clinton has credibility on the economy, “I’d use him for that,” offered Begala, who just wrote You’re Fired: The Perfect Guide to Beating Donald Trump. Maher didn’t seem convinced.
The host was already rattled by a retired colonel’s take on what a loss by President Trump might look like. Maher’s been preoccupied that Trump won’t leave if he loses.

CNN Contributor Paul Begala says he so against President Trump winning the 2020 election that he would vote for any Democratic he thought could beat him — even one who shot his dog.
“I am a JFK Democrat; I will pay any price, bear any burden, support any friend, oppose any foe to ensure the defeat of Donald J. Trump,” Begala told Chris Cuomo on his CNN program “Cuomo Primetime” on Monday. “You could be for Medicare for all or not, you could shoot my dog and if I think you could beat Trump, I’m going to be for you.”
“Well that is uh, very mainstream of you,” noted a visibly surprised Cuomo before moving on.
A rep for CNN did not immediately respond to request for comment.

Updated with video. Bill Maher closed a fairly by-the-book episode of HBO’s Real Time with an inspired anti-p.C. monologue linking leftist criticism of 2020 Democratic presidential candidates with attacks on this year’s Oscar Best Picture nominees for various sociopolitical reasons.
“This time, let’s not eat our own,” Maher suggested about the Democratic hopefuls, referencing the undermining of Hillary Clinton in 2016 by many Democrats. With the early field of candidates already being picked apart, he hit back and then slyly bridged to awards season. “This is a real problem in our society, looking to dump someone good because there must be someone more perfect,” he said. “And sometimes, what you end up with is, no one to host the Oscars at all.”
The Academy Awards, he declared, “are being ruined by these same kinds of ridiculous purity tests.” He rattled off a few examples, barely a week before...

CNN political contributor and former Clinton Administration staffer Paul Begala suggested that America should “blow up” Russian intelligence because of the alleged meddling in the 2016 election. “We were and are under attack by a hostile foreign power,” Begala said Thursday night on “Anderson Copper 360.” “We should be debating how many sanctions we should place on Russia or whether we should blow up the Kgb, Gsu, or Gru. We should be retaliating massively,” Begala said. As a wise woman once said: "When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. There is no middle ground." What holds true in HBO's hit fantasy series also resonates in Washington D.C. politics, of course, where the field of contenders has narrowed from a ridiculous many to a powerful few. And like the drama's many battles for the Iron Throne, election year campaigning can be a real bastard. The possibility of contested tickets mean the Democratic and Republican conventions run the risk of getting nasty,...

This week's Real Time with Bill Maher featured a group discussion on the Jan. 7 terrorist attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, which resulted in the death of 12 people. While a large number of comedians from Jon Stewart to Louis C.K. have responded to the attack by condemning the terrorists and voicing support for Charlie Hebdo, Bill Maher took it as a chance to launch into one of his hobbies: bashing religion in general, and Islam in particular. Joined by author Salman Rushdie, Carly Fiorina of the American Conservative Union Foundation, and CNN correspondent Paul Begala, Maher criticized the idea...

Currently in a rebuilding phase after a precipitous slide from its former dominance of the cable-news world, CNN has been adding new on-air talent, such as former ABC News correspondent Jake Tapper, and is also reaching back into its past.
Last week, CNN revived the current-events/debate program "Crossfire," blending a long-running format with a roster of new faces. The daily 30-minute show features two hosts and guests each night, with the co-hosts also appearing across other CNN programming.
From 1982 until 2005, "Crossfire" was a mainstay of the network's daytime lineup, examining the news from the points of view of a politically liberal and a conservative pundit.
The first pairing was journalist and author Tom Braden ("Eight Is Enough") on the liberal side, and commentator, politician and broadcaster Pat Buchanan, as the conservative.
Later rosters for both the daytime show and a Sunday edition included Robert Novak, John Sununu, Tony Snow,...

But now nine years have passed and CNN clearly no longer cares who it hurts, because Crossfire is coming back. CNN has announced it will revive the rancorous political program this fall, even cutting down Wolf Blitzer Reads People's Tweets To You by a half hour to make room in its schedule.
