Margaret Atwood Calls Fellow Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment Canada Honorees “Very Hard Acts to Follow”
Image
Margaret Atwood recalls MGM’s straight-to-series order in 2016 to adapt her dystopian classic novel The Handmaid’s Tale as a Hulu series as being a touch risky.

“It was a gamble. And the gamble paid off. Anybody approaching me earlier who said we wanted to make a film about The Handmaid’s Tale, I would have said, ‘Who’s going to watch that?’” she told the second annual Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment Canada gala at the Ritz Carlton in Toronto on Thursday.

“When it came out, a certain number of people felt it was illuminating because, surely, the United States would never, ever do such things,” the acerbic Canadian author, poet and activist said as she picked up the Icon Award at the Ritz Carlton. She talked about the success in adapting her 1985 dystopian novel just as Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale has reached the climax for its sixth and final season,...

Margaret Atwood to Receive The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment Canada Honor
Image
As Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale builds towards its series finale, Margaret Atwood, who wrote the 1985 novel on which the popular TV drama starring Elisabeth Moss is based, will be honored by The Hollywood Reporter at its Women in Entertainment Canada event on May 29 in Toronto.

The Canadian author, poet and activist will receive the Icon Award at this year’s second annual Wie Canada gala ceremony. Atwood wrote the Handmaid’s Tale book on which the Hulu TV series, from creator Bruce Miller, is based. Her follow-up 2019 novel, The Testaments, is currently being adapted as a sequel series.

The Handmaid’s Tale explores the complicated lives of handmaids who are sex slaves forced to give birth for infertile elite couples. Cultural and political observers have noted that the themes and concepts of the Canadian-born author’s celebrated novel are eerily familiar in today’s climate that sees the Donald Trump...

CBC Announces ‘Back In Time For Dinner’ Social Experiment Series
When it comes to the broader genre of reality programs, I’ve always loved those that you might call social experiments. From the various “decade house” series, or Frontier House, to those that have similarly put people into situations out of time, or at least out of their comfort zone. The CBC has announced a new series, Back in Time for Dinner, which will serve to take a Canadian family through six decades. The show will hit June 14th at 8 p.m. on CBC. Based on the Warner Bros. format that took a British family through similar paces, the series combines food, fashion and culture to turn the Campus family home into a virtual time machine. Each week the family will dive into a different decade, and much like those shows from the decade series, the shock of trying to cope with how things were in earlier times can make for quite the challenge.
