Tonino Benacquista

Robert De Niro & Michelle Pfeiffer Are a Criminal Duo in This Comedy
Image
With one of the simplest yet most effective double meanings in a film title, The Family is an underrated gem of a movie that features Hollywood legends, young stars, and a shockingly effective combination of wildly different genres. Known as Malavita or Cosa Nostra in some international releases, The Family is a 2013 black comedy crime film that follows a mafia family hiding away in rural France as part of a witness protection program. Based on a French novel by author Tonino Benacquista, the movie is a daring and stylized collision of bloody mobster action with the genuine heart and connection of a family movie that'll leave the audience's hearts pumping with both adrenaline and affection by the time it's all said and done.

Former Lionsgate Exec Guy Avshalom’s Blackbox Developing Crime Skeins (Exclusive)
London and Rome-based production company Blackbox Multimedia, recently co-founded by former Lionsgate COO Guy Avshalom with Italy’s Guido Brera and Roberta Cardarelli, is developing a slate of high-end skeins for the international market comprising “The Last Cop,” on which they’ve partnered with Keshet International, and also “Murder in Time,” based on a series of thrillers by U.S. writer Julie McElwain.

McElwain’s three “Murder in Time” books, published by Pegasus, revolve around tough FBI agent Kendra Donovan who goes rogue in London in an effort to assassinate the man who killed her team, only to end up in England in the 1800s. Up-and-coming British screenwriter Amanda Duke has written the series bible for this time-travel crime thriller that encapsulates “what Blackbox is trying to do,” says the company’s Head of Development Chiara Cardoso.

Concurrently, the company has also commissioned Spain’s Sergio Barrejon, who served as writer...

Marion Cotillard and Ayline Aksoy-Etaix in Angel Face (2018)
‘Angel Face’ Producer Sets New Projects (Exclusive)
Marion Cotillard and Ayline Aksoy-Etaix in Angel Face (2018)
Carole Lambert’s recently launched Windy Prods., which has the Marion Cotillard-starrer “Angel Face” playing in Un Certain Regard, is set to produce Joséphine Derobe’s fantasy feature “Vv,” Eric Capitaine’s “Les bonnes actions” and Manuel Schapira’s “Tropique de la violence.”

Derobe’s “Vv” follows Anna, a woman who wakes up in a hospital room after surviving a deadly car accident. Although she tries to remain optimistic, her return to normal life turns nightmarish as she undergoes rehabilitation therapy using virtual reality. The movie will mark the feature debut of Derobe, who is a well-known French 3D and Vr artist.

Shapira’s “Tropique de la Violence” is co-written with French novelist Delphine de Vigan, whose “Based on a True Story” was adapted into a film by Roman Polanski.

“Tropique” centers on Moïse, a boy who was abandoned at birth and adopted by a nurse in Mayotte who...

Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dianna Agron, and John D'Leo in The Family (2013)
'Malavita' - uninspiring and tame (Ians Movie Review)
Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dianna Agron, and John D'Leo in The Family (2013)
Film: "Malavita"; Cast: Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Tommy Lee Jones, Dianna Agron, John D'Leo, Vincent Pastore, Joseph Perrino, Paul Borghese, Jimmy Palumbo and Kresh Navakovic; Director: Luc Besson; Rating: **1/2

Billed as an action comedy and adapted from Tonino Benacquista's novel, director Luc Besson's film suffers from an identity crisis. Released elsewhere as "The Family", here in India, the film is called "Malavita". And if you were to ask, what's in a name? Well...

Well, the film gets its name after the faithful canine, which the family loses in a bloody fight.

But "Malavita" is not the dog's story. Unless it denotes, that every mobster leads a dog's life!

This is the tale of mobster Giovanni.

‘The Family’ has its moments, but is never superlative
The Family

Written by Tonino Benacquista, Luc Besson, and Michael Caleo

Directed by Luc Besson

USA/France, 2013

The famed French director Luc Besson hasn’t directed a film with a wide American release since the historic bomb The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc in 1999. In the interim, he has written and produced a number of highly successful films including The Transporter, Taken, and District B13, and he’s directed a few French films that haven’t come across the pond, but The Family is his first attempt at directing an English-language film in almost 15 years. He’s still got it to some degree, for The Family is acceptably entertaining, but it’s not even close to Besson’s biggest hits from the past.

The titular family is the Manzoni organized crime clan, who enter into witness protection and became the Blakes: father Fred (Robert de Niro), mother Maggie...

Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Insidious Chapter 2′ defies expectations
Box office prognosticators had Insidious Chapter 2 opening to about $20 million this weekend, and boy were they off. The sequel to 2011′s Insidious defied expectations and earned $41 million in it’s opening weekend.

Has Insidious Chapter 3 been announced yet? If not, expect it to come soon, but don’t expect director James Wan to return, as he is moving on to Fast & Furious 7 and has sworn off horror films.

Coming in at number two is The Family, writer/director Luc Besson’s adaptation of Tonino Benacquista’s novel; which managed a respectable $14.5 million. The film stars Robert DeNiro and Michelle Pfeiffer as a mother and father who must move their mob family to France with the help of the Witness Protection Program.

Last weekend’s number one flick Riddick took a large tumble of 63.1% to finish in third with $7 million for a total domestic take of $31.3 million. Internationally Riddick has amassed...

Review: The Family
A favorite cable television series in recent years for me has been USA Network's In Plain Sight about U.S. Marshals charged with relocating and protecting federal witnesses. The dramatization of people who must adjust to a new life with a new identity is engaging and thought provoking. How does a person not only leave behind their friends and relations, but also change their occupation or interests to avoid detection?

Based on by French crime fiction author Tonino Benacquista, writer/director Luc Besson's The Family provides darkly humorous insight of a former Mafioso and his family's existence within a federal witness program. When extortion and illegal activities are all you've known for your entire life, it's not easy to adjust to a different lifestyle -- even in the idyllic setting of the French Riviera or the historic and slower-paced Normandy.

Robert De Niro portrays Fred Blake/Giovanni Manzoni, who...

The Family Review
In a shocking turn of events that not even the most studied of film scholars could have predicted, Robert De Niro takes on the role of a mobster in Luc Besson’s new action/comedy, The Family, based on the French novel Malavita (published as Badfellas in North America), by Tonino Benacquista.

De Niro gets comfortable playing Gio Manzoni, a nice blend of every other gangster he’s played in his career, only in this case he’s been exiled to France after ratting out his former cronies. As the movie begins we meet Gio and his family arriving in a new village after fleeing their last witness protection location in fear of being discovered and whacked by a sort of mob hit man/P.I. who’s hot on their trail and eager to get his job done.

Gio (now going by Fred Blake), his wife Maggie (Michelle Pfeiffer...

Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dianna Agron, and John D'Leo in The Family (2013)
‘The Family’ Review: Robert De Niro’s Mob Comedy Has a Few Killer Chuckles
Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Dianna Agron, and John D'Leo in The Family (2013)
It might at first seem lazy to cast Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer in “The Family,” about a mobster, his wife and their kids hiding out in witness protection in France. De Niro, after all, has played countless goodfellas over the years, while Pfeiffer was herself married to the mob in the film of the same name, not to mention “Scarface.” It all seems forgivable, however, since writer-director Luc Besson (who adapted Tonino Benacquista’s novel “Malavita” with co-scenarist Michael Caleo) builds on the stunt casting until it culminates in a colossal inside joke that no doubt tickled both the.

Press Conference Interview With The Cast Of The Family
Taunting long-standing stereotypes naturally built into a character archetype that has long brought you success, and has helped build your reputation, can be a risky move for well-established actors. But Academy Award-winning actor Robert De Niro daringly embraced the bold misunderstandings and confrontations with his latest portrayal of an unrelenting Mafia boss and his unsuspecting neighbors in director Luc Besson’s new action crime comedy, The Family. The actor effortlessly ridicules the ease and comfort his character takes in harming those who have wronged him, but also those characters around him who unquestionably take him at his word that he’s an upstanding citizen.

The Family, which is based on the book Badfellas by Tonino Benacquista, follows former Mafia boss Giovanni Manzoni (Robert De Niro) and his family as they’re relocated to a small town in France. The family is put into the Witness Protection Program, after he turns...

‘The Family’ Red Band Trailer: Robert De Niro Demonstrates Proper Use of the F-Word
Few actors have mastered the art of dropping f-bombs like Robert De Niro; who, over the course of his acting career, has played many a foul-mouthed psychopath, seasoned gangster and tough guy onscreen (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino, etc.). Assuming that no one has already, maybe in the future someone will tally the sheer number of times that De Niro has said… ahem… “fudge” or “forget you” in movies, but he does that nine times all by himself in a newly-unveiled red band trailer for The Family.

The Family, which is based on the book Badfellas authored by Tonino Benacquista, revolves around the members of the Manzoni clan – the patriarch Giovanni (De Niro), matriarch Maggie (Michelle Pfeiffer), daughter Belle (Dianna Agron) and son Warren (John D’Leo) – who make up a notorious Mafia family. Giovanni eventually cuts a deal with the ...

‘The Family’ Trailer: Mobster Robert De Niro’s Family Hides in France
The Family was formerly titled Malavita – the Italian word for the underworld of organized crime – and is based on author Tonino Benacquista’s non-fiction book “Badfellas.” It tells the story of ex-Mafia boss Giovanni Manzoni (played by Robert De Niro), who strikes a deal with the U.S. government and relocates his family under the FBI’s witness protection program to France.

However, the Manzoni clan – which includes Giovanni’s tempestuous wife (Michelle Pfeiffer) – stick out like a sore thumb, seeing how they’re a bunch of Americans who’re used to living the mobster lifestyle; now, they’re stuck keeping their heads down, in an effort to hide out in the quiet European countryside. When trouble comes a knockin’, the Mazonis are more than happy to – once again – be free and handle things “the family way.”

The Family was directed by Luc Besson (Léon: ...

Watch Robert De Niro In Trailer For Luc Besson’s The Family
For some reason, Luc Besson’s Malavita has been renamed. The Leon director’s upcoming mafia comedy has now been saddled with the rather dull title The Family. Production company Relativity Media have dropped the first trailer for the film. From Yahoo! Movies you can check it out below.

Robert De Niro treads familiar territory as a mafioso forced to relocate to a quaint French town with his family. Michelle Pfeiffer stands by her man as his wife. Dianna Agron and Joseph Perrino as their kids round out the troubled family brood.

All of the Manzoni family dally with typical mobster activities in this first trailer. It appears to pick up the thread left dangling at the end of Goodfellas. Just what do mobsters in witness protection get up to? A violent fish-out-of-water comedy, De Niro’s clan are kept in line by Tommy Lee Jones as the witness protection officer.

Meanwhile, "The Place Beyond The Pines" director Derek Cianfrance and star Bradley Cooper are not re-teaming on the "Chef" project which Cooper and "The Intouchables" star Omar Sy are attached to.

Cianfrance tells Premiere: "No, I will not direct this film. But I can say that Omar Sy has a lot of talent.

Written by Elan Mastai (The Samaritan), The F Word is currently filming in Toronto, Canada, with David Gross (The Goon) producing and Entertainment One overseeing the project.

Shockingly, Robert De Niro Will Play a Mobster for Luc Besson’s ‘Malavita’
Stop me if you’ve heard this one before – Robert De Niro is going to play a mob boss in a movie. You’re shocked, aren’t you? The star of such mob classics as The Godfather: Part II, The Untouchables, and Goodfellas is now officially signed on for another mob movie – but this one comes with a comedic twist that could suit De Niro’s recent sensibilities (the sort that have steered him to such schlock as Little Fockers). De Niro will lead the cast of Luc Besson‘s Malavita, in which he will play a “notorious” mob boss who, along with his family, is sent to France as part of the witness protection program (France? Really? My Blue Heaven, this is not). Despite their best attempts at a normal life, the family reverts to old habits (or, as the official press release on this project puts it, ” they soon find themselves handling things the ‘family...
