With one of the simplest yet most effective double meanings in a film title, The Family is an underrated gem of a movie that features Hollywood legends, young stars, and a shockingly effective combination of wildly different genres. Known as Malavita or Cosa Nostra in some international releases, The Family is a 2013 black comedy crime film that follows a mafia family hiding away in rural France as part of a witness protection program. Based on a French novel by author Tonino Benacquista, the movie is a daring and stylized collision of bloody mobster action with the genuine heart and connection of a family movie that'll leave the audience's hearts pumping with both adrenaline and affection by the time it's all said and done.

London and Rome-based production company Blackbox Multimedia, recently co-founded by former Lionsgate COO Guy Avshalom with Italy’s Guido Brera and Roberta Cardarelli, is developing a slate of high-end skeins for the international market comprising “The Last Cop,” on which they’ve partnered with Keshet International, and also “Murder in Time,” based on a series of thrillers by U.S. writer Julie McElwain.

McElwain’s three “Murder in Time” books, published by Pegasus, revolve around tough FBI agent Kendra Donovan who goes rogue in London in an effort to assassinate the man who killed her team, only to end up in England in the 1800s. Up-and-coming British screenwriter Amanda Duke has written the series bible for this time-travel crime thriller that encapsulates “what Blackbox is trying to do,” says the company’s Head of Development Chiara Cardoso.

Carole Lambert’s recently launched Windy Prods., which has the Marion Cotillard-starrer “Angel Face” playing in Un Certain Regard, is set to produce Joséphine Derobe’s fantasy feature “Vv,” Eric Capitaine’s “Les bonnes actions” and Manuel Schapira’s “Tropique de la violence.”

Derobe’s “Vv” follows Anna, a woman who wakes up in a hospital room after surviving a deadly car accident. Although she tries to remain optimistic, her return to normal life turns nightmarish as she undergoes rehabilitation therapy using virtual reality. The movie will mark the feature debut of Derobe, who is a well-known French 3D and Vr artist.

Shapira’s “Tropique de la Violence” is co-written with French novelist Delphine de Vigan, whose “Based on a True Story” was adapted into a film by Roman Polanski.

Well, the film gets its name after the faithful canine, which the family loses in a bloody fight.

But "Malavita" is not the dog's story. Unless it denotes, that every mobster leads a dog's life!

In a shocking turn of events that not even the most studied of film scholars could have predicted, Robert De Niro takes on the role of a mobster in Luc Besson’s new action/comedy, The Family, based on the French novel Malavita (published as Badfellas in North America), by Tonino Benacquista.

De Niro gets comfortable playing Gio Manzoni, a nice blend of every other gangster he’s played in his career, only in this case he’s been exiled to France after ratting out his former cronies. For some reason, Luc Besson’s Malavita has been renamed. The Leon director’s upcoming mafia comedy has now been saddled with the rather dull title The Family. Production company Relativity Media have dropped the first trailer for the film. From Yahoo! Movies you can check it out below.

Relativity Media will open Luc Besson's mafia comedy "Malavita" on Oct. 18, 2013, the company announced Tuesday. The studio is also moving up the release date of its comedy "21 and Over" by two weeks to March 1, 2013. Hard work in France, indeed! And all that because principal photography finally begins on Luc Besson’s latest project titled Malavita!

We already had a little chat about this movie, but now we’re here to continue with some official details that we have thanks to folks from Relativity Media.

Filming in getting underway on the latest Luc Besson project, Malavita, featuring Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Glee‘s Dianna Agron, and kid actor John D’Leo (Wanderlust). This is “only” the seventh movie directed by Besson over the past seven years, but also the fifteenth he shares writing credit on – not to mention, Besson has produced more than 40 films during that period (Taken, Transporter 3, District 13: Ultimatum, From Paris with Love, Colombiana, Lockout, Taken 2).

Besson is backing the project with his EuroCorp partner (and wife) Virginie Besson-Silla, along with Relativity’s Ryan Kavanaugh (3:10 to Yuma, The Fighter) and Tucker Tooley (Immortals, Act of Valor). Relativity is handling U.S. distribution and plans to unleash Malavita in theaters sometime next year.
