Brendan Fraser's Mummy Remake Was Nearly Very Different, Details Director
Image
Stephen Sommers, director of Brendan Fraser’s 1999 version of The Mummy, has revealed that the film nearly took a very different approach before his involvement. Loosely based on the classic 1932 horror film of the same name, the 1999 film saw Fraser joined by co-stars Rachel Weisz and John Hannah as they battled the resurrected Egyptian priest Imhotep. Widely regarded as one of the highlights of Fraser’s early career, the film would eventually go on to spawn two direct sequels as well as the various The Scorpion King spinoff films.

In a recent interview with Syfy Wire, Sommers spoke about Universal Studios’ original plans to remake The Mummy prior to him coming on board to lead the project. Recalling that the studio had already gone through multiple directors and writers, Sommers revealed that the film was initially set in Los Angeles and was intended to be a direct remake of the original Boris Karloff film.
