Image
What’s even Hollywood without a dash of vendetta? Behind the scenes, conflicts and tensions can simmer, but perhaps none have reached the dramatic heights seen on the set of Transformers: Age of Extinction. The feud between director Michael Bay and actor T.J. Miller escalated to a great level, with whispers circulating that Miller’s character’s demise in the film was orchestrated as a result of Bay’s alleged pettiness.

A still from Transformers: Age of Extinction

Despite the undeniable success of the movie, the prospect of these two collaborators joining forces again seems dim, because of the lingering animosity between them.

What Really Happened Between Michael Bay and T.J. Miller During Transformers: Age of Extinction

To find the truth behind the clash between director Michael Bay and actor T.J. Miller, one has to travel back to the chaotic sets of Transformers 4. Rumors swirled that Miller and...

High There! Five of Our Favorite Marijuana-Themed Indie Features
420 (2007)
Of all the unofficial holidays derived from an apocryphal bit police code, 4/20 is by far the most enduring. And just as “420” has gradually become entrenched as stoner shorthand for marijuana, the date April 20 has become an opportunity not just for college kids looking to indulge in a little extralegal fun, but also for drug law reformers and other advocacy groups to stump for a more reasonable national attitude toward America’s big green weed of choice.

And as marijuana laws have shifted over the years—from outright prohibition, to limited medicinal usage, to tightly regulated recreational use within certain states—marijuana themed movies have likewise evolved. Once upon a time, the only movies that even touched the subject of pot were hysterical propaganda pieces like Reefer Madness. Then, from the 1960s onward, weed became a popular (and hip) subject of broad comedy—in everything from Animal House to Annie Hall to Friday.

ABC Orders ‘Judge Steve Harvey,’ Sticking the Comedian in a Courtroom to Rule on Actual Cases
Image
The comedian who knows a thing or two about family feuds is now actually going to have the final say. Steve Harvey, who hosts “Celebrity Family Feud” for ABC (as well as the syndicated daytime civilian “Family Feud”), has been tapped to host a new courtroom series for the Alphabet network.

With the working title “Judge Steve Harvey,” ABC has ordered 10 episodes of what it’s billing a “courtroom comedy series.” But the cases will be real: Harvey will welcome real-life people into his courtroom to rule on conflicts ranging from family disputes and sour friendships to actual small claims. “Steve plays by his own rules, basing his courtroom on his own life experiences and some good old common sense,” the network said.

“Judge Steve Harvey” will air on ABC sometime in 2022. Walt Disney Television’s new alternative unit will produce with Den of Thieves. Casting is currently underway by MysticArt Pictures,...

‘The Last Blockbuster’ Review: A Fond Homage to the Hobbled Video Giant, Now on Netflix
Image
At its peak in 2004, Blockbuster licensed its name to nearly 9,000 video rental stores around the world. According to my calculations, that means the chain, which specialized in stocking up on new releases (and strangling competitors out of business), must have had at least 90,000 copies of “Gigli” in circulation.

Today, you can’t find even a single “Gigli” DVD at the one remaining Blockbuster store on Earth — a family-owned, community-supported franchise holdout in Bend, Ore. I know because I just got off the phone with them. “Can you spell it?” asked the clerk, unfamiliar with the 2004 Ben Affleck-Jennifer Lopez flop. That said, you can still find thousands of other movies for rent, the increasing rarity of which is apparently enough to inspire pilgrimages to this Tuvalu-like outpost for many who associate Blockbuster with early jobs and/or formative movie-watching experiences — even though there are probably local stores that could...

‘The Last Blockbuster’ Documentary Acquired by 1091 Pictures for December Release (Exclusive)
Image
Blockbuster Video was recently back in the news after its last remaining outpost in Bend, Oregon began offering movie lovers a chance to spend the night on an air mattress or pull-out couch, surrounded by rows and rows of new releases. The cost was the same as a movie rental — $4 (not accounting for those exorbitant late fees!). The AirBnB promotion went viral, riding a crest of social media interest both from Twitter-users who fondly remember spending weekends picking out movies at their local Blockbuster, as well as from Gen Z members for whom the idea of a “video” is as relevant as a Spanish galleon.

Now, 1091 Pictures has acquired worldwide digital and broadcast rights to “The Last Blockbuster,” the story of how one small town video store managed to survive the decline and fall of its corporate parent. The film follows Sandi Harding, the manager of the Oregon-based Blockbuster...

The Last Remaining Blockbuster Is Available for Overnight Stays on Airbnb
Image
In the age of streaming and VOD, movie fans old enough to remember the era of VHS and DVD rentals are surely filled with warm and fuzzy memories of browsing the aisles of their local Blockbuster Video. While they once numbered over 9,000 locations, there now exists a single Blockbuster store, in Bend, Oregon, which is offering a very special blast from the past in the form of three available overnight stays on Airbnb.

Yes, you can actually have a movie-night sleepover inside an actual Blockbuster, which has created a living room space amid its towering shelves of movies. The decor harkens back to the 1990s peak of the rental chain, with a pull-out couch and pastel-patterned bedspreads and pillows. Guests will be able to play VHS movies on the included 4:3 TV.

Unfortunately, the sleepovers are available only to residents in Bend’s Deschutes County. Beginning on August 17 at 1 p.

The Last Blockbuster Trailer Brings a Much-Needed Shot of Video Store Nostalgia
Doug Benson at an event for Observe and Report (2009)
A new trailer for The Last Blockbuster has been released. There was a time for many of us movie lovers who grew up in the 90s where Blockbuster Video was a haven. Be it our parents would take us there and let us rent a movie or two to enjoy over the weekend or what have you. While the vast majority of the retailer's stores have been closed for years, one resilient location in Bend, Oregan has the distinguished title as the last ever Blockbuster store. This documentary will look at that store, as well as the rise and fall of the video store giant.

The trailer opens up with Blockbuster's former CEO setting the table for how the company fell from grace, and it wasn't because of Netflix, even though that is the common narrative. We then see comedian Doug Benson walking around the last location in Oregon, marveling...

Bela Lugosi Meets A Brooklyn Gorilla Special Screening at MaltinFest, Using Bela Lugosi’s Personal 35Mm Print
MaltinFest is taking place this weekend at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood and we have details on a special screening of Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla. Taking place this Sunday at 8:30pm, the screening is an ultra-rare 35mm print that was donated to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences by Bela Lugosi Jr. Here's what Leonard Maltin had to say about the under-seen film:

"Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla is one-of-a-kind… a patently terrible movie that I find utterly fascinating. It features the great Lugosi playing a mad scientist opposite a nightclub duo named Duke Mitchell and Sammy Petrillo, who were the poor man’s Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis—at a time when Martin and Lewis were the hottest act in show business! It was directed by B-movie specialist William Beaudine and features Charles Gemora in his world-famous gorilla suit. It will only cost...

Alice Wetterlund Calls Working With T.J. Miller on Silicon Valley "a Nightmare"
Alice Wetterlund
Alice Wetterlund's onscreen work as rockstar engineer Carla Walton in seasons two and three of Silicon Valley earned her plenty of fans, but the actress and comedian recently opened up about what her offscreen experience working on the HBO comedy was really like. In short: T.J. Miller made being there a "nightmare," and his male costars didn't do anything to help the boys' club atmosphere.

Disturbing physical and sexual assault claims were made against Miller in 2017, resulting in his Comedy Central show being canceled and his presence being wiped from the press tours for films like Ready Player One. He also earned a reputation for giving combative interviews, and was arrested in April after making a false bomb threat aboard an Amtrak train. An investigation from The Hollywood Reporter also revealed that Miller had been let go from Mike Judge's HBO series after he repeatedly showed up to...

Tiffany Haddish: Why The ‘Girls Trip’ Star Is This Year’s Comedy Wonder Woman
Tiffany Haddish
To watch Tiffany Haddish is to get the vicarious sense that you, too, can do anything, be anything, including yourself. It comes down to just two words: “She ready.”

You hear Haddish say “she ready” a lot, in interviews, in her upcoming Showtime stand-up special — Haddish’s production company is even called She Ready Productions. When she says it, don’t think of it as a catchphrase. Really, it’s a mantra.

“Me and my cousins, we came up with it when we were young and trying to sneak into clubs,” she told IndieWire in a phone interview. “When we would come out of the house and you looked cute we’d be like, ‘Yeah, she ready.’ And if you looked bad, we’d be like, ‘Uh uh, she not ready, go back in the house.

Pluto TV Pulls Skywriting Stunt, Unveils Marijuana-Themed Marathon For 4/20
Online TV platform Pluto TV is feeling festive this April 20 (4/20) -- a counterculture holiday that celebrates all things cannabis.

In addition to piloting a skywriting stunt in Los Angeles today, where a plane wrote a message urging passersby to “Get High” (above), the free Ott service offered up a special block of programming on its very own Thc channel -- located at number 420, naturally -- which celebrates marijuana year-round with cartoons, documentaries, and live music. Today’s marathon features The Greatest Movie Ever Rolled, following comedians and potheads Doug Benson and Graham Elwood on a comedy tour; Something from Nothing: The Art of Rap, where Ice-t travels the country to speak with prominent hip hop artists; and more.

‘The High Court With Doug Benson,’ Produced By Jash, Arrives On Comedy Central
The first TV show ever produced by the digital comedy network Jash has arrived. The High Court with Doug Benson, in which the titular host deliberates on a series of real cases, premiered its first episode on at midnight on February 28th on Comedy Central.

In each High Court episode, Benson -- who in his career has built much of his shtick around his love of weed -- hears testimony from a plaintiff and defendant and then makes whatever decision his drug-addled mind thinks is best. A series of stand-up comedians, including Michael Ian Black, Rory Scovel, and Jash co-founder Reggie Watts, will serve as The High Court’s “guest bailiffs.”

As noted in an Esquire article, Jash co-founder Daniel Kellison recruited Benson as host, reasoning that the comedian’s perpetually-stoned demeanor would make him the right man for the job. "I guess I'm the go-to pot guy," Benson told Esquire.

‘The Lego Batman Movie’ Review
Stars: Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis, Michael Cera, Rosario Dawson, Ralph Fiennes, Jenny Slate, Jason Mantzoukas, Conan O’Brien, Doug Benson, Billy Dee Williams, Zoë Kravitz, Kate Micucci, Eddie Izzard | Written by Seth Grahame-Smith, Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, Jared Stern, John Whittington | Directed by Chris McKay

The Age of Animation rolls on, and we’re in a pretty good place, with the accessible intellect of Pixar and the slapstick pleasures of Illumination; and now a third pillar in the form of Warner Bros’ Lego universe, whose USPs are a soda stream of visual ideas and an irreverent, referential humour. A spin-off from surprise smash The Lego Movie, The Lego Batman Movie mirrors the 2014 film’s frenetic pace, even if the gag hit-rate falls shorter.

The opening sequence, in which Joker (Zach Galifianakis) unleashes every villain from Penguin to “The Condiment Man” upon Gotham City, is an Adhd explosion of neon colour and editing.

“The Lego Batman Movie” is a surprising delight
A lack of expectations can sometimes be a film’s secret weapon. It’s not that I thought The Lego Batman Movie would be bad, but it just wasn’t initially on my radar to any real degree. Go figure then, since this probably my favorite movie of 2017 so far. It works in a tremendous way. Opening this week, it hopes to be as beloved as The Lego Movie was back when it opened. Going by the response I saw last weekend when I viewed it at a press screening, Warner Brothers has absolutely nothing to worry about. This will be a surefire hit. The film is an animated action comedy following Batman (voice of Will Arnett) as he goes about his heroic ways. After an encounter with Joker (voice of Zach Galifianakis) and a huge assortment of cohorts that basically leaves Gotham City villain free temporarily, Batman/Bruce Wayne...

Lindsay Lohan in Lindsay (2014)
Review: 'You're the Worst' shoots most of an episode in an unusual way
Lindsay Lohan in Lindsay (2014)
A quick review of tonight's You're the Worst coming up just as soon as I like hard cider and losing myself in a graphic novel... Even in our new age of presenting TV scenes as long unbroken takes (like the Vietnam massacre sequence from the Quarry finale), devoting the bulk of an episode to "oners" is still a relative novelty. (The "Triangle" episode of X-Files is the most famous of these.) And on the one hand, there were times throughout "The Inherent, Unsullied Qualitative Value of Anything" when the camerawork was very much calling attention to itself, particularly whenever the transition from one scene to another depended on the movements of one of the caterers. (Though even that began to have some comedic purpose through the subplots about the missing cocaine and the cereal-themed restaurant.) On the other, though, presenting Shitstain and Jaclyn's elopement party that way did a much...

Lindsay Lohan in Lindsay (2014)
Review: On 'You're the Worst,' Jimmy builds a treehouse & Lindsay makes a choice
Lindsay Lohan in Lindsay (2014)
A quick review of tonight's You're the Worst coming up just as soon as I try to eat an area rug... Where You're the Worst can struggle at times with more traditionally-structured ensemble episodes designed to give each main character his or her own storyline, "Talking to Me, Talking to Me" felt nicely balanced, and equally bittersweet throughout. It helped that Gretchen's quest for mindfulness linked together her story with Jimmy and Lindsay's, but this was the rare Ytw of this type where none of the stories felt underfed. If I have any major objection at all, it's that Paul's cameo (via text, jpg, and audio message) in the Lindsay subplot seemed to fly in the face of what we saw of him in "The Seventh Layer." In that one, it seemed he had finally accepted that Lindsay was an awful person who didn't love him, and he was...

Doug Benson Gets Stoned, Then Rules Court Cases, on New Comedy Central Legal Show
Comedy Central is getting Doug with “High.” The cable network has ordered the new series “The High Court,” a daily show starring comedian Doug Benson as he smokes weed, gets high, then rules on real small claims court cases.

Fantastic Fest: James McAvoy and M. Night Shyamalan crash Fantastic Fest with Split
Even in the bubble of a film festival, where political discussions tend to revolve around who got invited to which afterparty, the real world intervenes occasionally. So it was yesterday at Fantastic Fest, where a rumor was going around that Monday’s “secret screening” would be the debate between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton with live commentary from comedian Doug Benson, who’s been hanging around all week, trailing his signature skunky cloud of smoke behind him. That’s not at all what ended up happening, and just how off base all the predictions were this year—last year’s secret screening title was an open secret hours before its debut—is a testament to how well the festival kept it under wraps.

The secrecy ended up being thematically appropriate, actually, because the film was M. Night Shyamalan’s latest, Split (Grade: B). The film isn’t slated to come...
