Greg Gumbel, the sure-handed CBS sportscaster whose 50-year-plus career included hosting the NCAA men’s basketball tournament and The NFL Today and handling play-by-play for a pair of Super Bowls, has died. He was 78.

Gumbel’s death after a “courageous battle with cancer” was announced Friday in a statement from his wife, Marcy, and his daughter, Michelle.

Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson Beat Up Cyber Criminals in New Amazon PSA (TV News Roundup)
Image
Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson have teamed up once again — this time to throw cyber criminals against walls.

The two stars appear in a new cybersecurity awareness PSA from Amazon as a part of the company’s protect and connect program, which aims to teach Internet users how to protect themselves from phishing and other cybersecurity threats.

The PSA features Jordan and Thompson saving unsuspecting internet users from sketchy internet schemes. The PSA comes as a follow up on Amazon’s commitments at the White House Cybersecurity Summit in 2021.

“Being part of this PSA was an opportunity to work with Tessa again, one of my mentors — Paul Hunter, and to support the Amazon family to get this message out that cyber security and your privacy is really important,” Jordan said. “Nobody wants their information stolen. As much as you can protect your information, and your family and friends, you should do that.

Joe Morgan Dies: Cincinnati Reds Hall Of Famer & Longtime ESPN Commentator Was 77
Image
Joe Morgan, the Cincinnati Reds’ Hall of Fame second baseman who powered the team’s legendary Big Red Machine era of the 1970s before co-anchoring with Jon Miller ESPN’s must-watch Sunday Night Baseball for 21 seasons, died Sunday at his home in Danville, CA. He was 77.

A family spokesperson the cause of death was nonspecified polyneuropathy. He’d had a bone-marrow transplant in 2016.

Nicknamed Little Joe (he stood 5-foot-7), Morgan, along with Reds teammates Pete Rose, Johnny Bench and Tony Perez, was a key force in the team’s World Series championships in 1975 and 1976; he was named National League Most Valuable Player both of those seasons.

A 10-time All-Star and five-time Gold Glove winner, Morgan also was a stolen-base specialist, swiping 40 or more bags in nine of his 22 seasons. He also was known for his habit of cocking his left elbow up and down as he awaited a pitch.

Eagles’ ‘Live From the Forum Mmxviii’ to Be First Concert Aired on ESPN
Image
Music and sports — arguably the two forms of mainstream entertainment hardest hit by the pandemic lockdown — will get some succor on Sunday when ESPN will air its first-ever concert: the Eagles’ “Live from the Forum Mmxviii.”

For those whose roman-numeral-translation skills are lacking, the concert dates from 2018, when the group was on an extensive North American tour that found core members Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit accompanied by Vince Gill and Deacon Frey; the latter is the son of late Eagles cofounder Glenn Frey. The group arrived at the Forum in Los Angeles for three sold-out concerts on September 12, 14, and 15, with highlights from all three shows compiled into the new 26-song live album and concert film that premieres on ESPN Sunday night, presented by longtime Eagles fan, ESPN’s Chris Berman (who presumably will not say that the group “could… go… all… the… way!”).

‘And Creed Staggers Back!': When Bad Sports Commentaries Ruin Good Movies (Photos)
Sylvester Stallone and Michael B. Jordan in Creed II (2018)
I’d like to alert you to a medical condition I have made up called Obvious Sportscaster Syndrome (Oss), also known as Commentator Mouth. Movies that display symptoms of Commentator Mouth include broadcasters in sports movies delivering painfully obvious and exposition-laden dialogue during boxing matches, football games or the like. Oss most commonly affects genuinely talented, real-life sports journalists making cameos in otherwise good films. And the worst cases of Oss range from mildly irritating to completely taking you out of the moment. Not once has the presence of commentators actually added to a movie, and sadly, there is no cure. The latest to come down with the disease is “Creed II,” contracting it from the first “Creed” film and as far back as the “Rocky” sequels. If you or a movie you love suffers from Commentator Mouth, you may see it represented in the list below:

“Creed” and “Creed II...

‘Fox & Friends’ Mocks ‘Unemployed’ Jemele Hill Over ESPN Reporter’s Journalism Award
“Fox & Friends” mocked former ESPN anchor Jemele Hill on Tuesday as being an “unemployed” “activist” who didn’t deserve the Journalist of the Year award she recently received from the National Association of Black Journalists.

“The bottom line is that she is unemployed from hosting her own TV show. This is not something we should be promoting,” said Campus Reform’s Lawrence Jones. “Now she’s unemployed. The National Black Associations of Journalists is literally saying now we’re going to applaud unemployment and that’s not something I stand for.”

It was a Cfl Labour Day Classic to remember, when the Stamps went up against the Esks ... but it was the rabbit that stole the show. It went the whole length of the field before doing a touchdown dance that would make Deion Sanders proud. Check out the greatest thing to come out of Canadian football since Warren Moon.

Sports fans awoke on Sunday (January 4) morning to an NFL Wild Card double-header and to the sad news that veteran Espn sportcaster and anchor Stuart Scott had died at the age of 49. Scott had been fighting cancer since 2007, continuing his work at Espn through the vast majority of his treatment, which included a 2012 remission. "Espn and everyone in the sports world have lost a true friend and a uniquely inspirational figure in Stuart Scott," stated Espn president John Skipper. "Who engages in mixed martial arts training in the midst of chemotherapy treatments?   Who leaves a hospital procedure to return to the set?  His energetic and unwavering devotion to his family and to his work while fighting the battle of his life left us in awe, and he leaves a void that can never be replaced." Espn also released this tribute to Scott's legacy on "SportsCenter" and on the network as a whole.
