The Western genre is one of the most iconic in the history of cinema and includes a few unique subgenres. While there might not be as many Westerns made today as there were in the genre’s golden age from the 1930s to the 1960s, the best Westerns have left their unmistakable mark on pop culture. Its tropes, esthetics, and stories have been reworked times and times again both within the Western genre and outside, and several other genres have found their way within Western proper.
Among the many subgenres of Western into which the genre can be categorized, there’s one that is well known for producing sweeping epics that have tugged at the heartstrings of several generations—and that is the Western war movie. Usually set in a Western-like time and place and featuring a major conflict that shapes the lives of their characters, Western war movies are...

The ongoing SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes might have a silver lining for at least some unemployed actors – the four-legged kind.
With nearly all Hollywood film productions halted, many of the hardworking animal actors have had the last few months off. And while they’re not sipping piña coladas by the pool, some animals may be getting more care and attention from their owners as a result. Others, meanwhile, could be in more precarious positions — especially as the time spent between productions can oftentimes be the most dangerous for animal actors due to unsafe living conditions, unskilled trainers and lack of oversight.
The strike “won’t ever affect the horses as far as them being taken care of,” said stunt and livestock coordinator Tad Griffith of a Tad Western Production Company in Agua Dulce. He keeps all the animals he works with for life and considers them part of the family.

On The Purge, murder is still murder, even when it's for a good cause.

This review of The Purge contains spoilers.
The Purge Season 1 Episode 5
The New Founding Fathers, at least those high up enough in the organization, have granted themselves immunity from The Purge. I would assume that this doesn't cover the Stanton family, given their relatively small time status in the grand scheme of things, but I wonder. Purge night has a surprising amount of rules for a night that has no rules. What happens to those that break them? If you're an anti-nffa organization, like the roadblock set up in earlier episodes to keep Nffa tourists out of a poor neighborhood or an armed group of revolutionaries like the ones that smash their way into the Stanton compound in the very exciting finale of “Rise Up,” who exactly is going to stop you from doing whatever...

The Purge handles sexual violence in a surprisingly smart manner.
This The Purge review contains spoilers.
The Purge Episode 4
One of the smartest things that The Purge has done is avoid the specter of sexual violence on Purge night. It's people out for blood, not people out to rape or maim. The Purge isn't necessarily a classy film series, but that's a nice touch to keep it out of the muck of exploitation movies and into something a little more palatable for modern sensibilities. Rape as a movie trope was much more prevalent, and acceptable, in the grimy grindhouses of the '70s, not the clean multiplexes of the 2010s.
The Purge television show, four episodes in, decides to not ignore that. Instead, they lean into it, creating an all-female defense squad who rides around in an Rv on Purge night to protect women from would-be rapists and murderers.

"As long as my son is in that car, I will not stop! Wherever you go, I will be right behind you!" Another new trailer has debuted for the kidnapping action thriller titled Kidnap. The film stars Halle Berry as a passionate mother who stops at nothing to recover her kidnapped son. This movie was originally supposed to open last December, but got pushed back with the Relativity fiasco. Now it's finally opening in August of this year for those still curious. This new trailer is a rehash of the first trailer with most of the same footage, but different edits. Also starring Sage Correa, Lew Temple, Dana Gourrier, Christopher Berry, and Chris McGinn. I like the intensity of these trailers, it's a good sell, I just hope the movie is worth the wait. "I have to defend him without knowing all the facts." Lionsgate has revealed the trailer for a film titled The Whole Truth, a legal thriller starring Keanu Reeves as a defense attorney in a murder case. His job is to build a defense to keep his friend's son out of jail, even though it seems his conviction for murder is pretty clear. The film also stars Renée Zellweger, Gabriel Basso, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jim Belushi, Sean Bridgers and Christopher Berry. Maybe I'm just a sucker for anything Keanu Reeves stars in, but this actually looks damn good, with some intriguing questions being asked about how the law works and whether or not someone is trying to cover up the truth. I'm curious. This definitely looks like it'll be worth watching. "You took the wrong kid!" Holy crap! Relativity Studios has debuted a wild trailer for the kidnapper thriller titled – yes, this straightforward – Kidnap. The film stars Halle Berry as a passionate mother who stops at nothing to recover her kidnapped son. This is an odd trailer because it spends so much time setting up the first act of the film, then flashes a few glimpses of what happens later, but relies mostly on the fear and intense emotions of having a child taken. Will it be any good? Hard to tell. Also starring Sage Correa, Lew Temple, Dana Gourrier, Christopher Berry and Chris McGinn. I'm not sure about this - take a look. It’s been interesting watching Matthew McConaughey make project decisions after winning his Academy Award. He has gone big with epics like Interstellar and gone small with the still unreleased Sea of Trees, but this week he’s trying something new. Basically, he’s attempting to bring back the Civil War film with Free State of Jones. This type of movie is rarely done right and usually is super dry, so it’s a tall order, but starring one of our most exciting actors right now, there’s a chance, right? Well, this turns out to be a total bore, plodding and sometimes strangely tone deaf to the racial dynamics on display. The saving grace is McConaughey though, even if you can’t quite see what he saw in this material. There’s moments of entertainment and righteous indignation, but too often it’s just a poorly thought out history lesson.

When filming a show on location, surprises are bound to happen. A plane flies overhead, an unexpected rain shower…a car coming around the bend at an inopportune moment. It’s that last one that fans of The Walking Dead are trying to figure out in the wake of the mid-season premiere. If the vehicle cresting the hill was an accident, everything is okay. If it was a well-hidden clue, Daryl (Norman Reedus) might be in big trouble. Warning: Spoilers And Speculation For Upcoming Episodes Of The Walking Dead Beyond This Point. First noticed by Uproxx, when Daryl finally used Chekov’s grenade launcher in the mid-season premiere, there may have been witnesses. While the lead Savior (Christopher Berry) terrorized Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Abraham (Michael Cudlitz), a car was barely visible in the background. Check it out. Car in the background... Nicolas Cage! *The Internet cheers*. Alright, now we have that over and done with, let’s get down to the review…
In the aftermath of the Bp oil spill, an idealistic but imperfect New Orleans politician (Nicolas Cage) finds his plans of restoration unravelling as his own life becomes contaminated with corruption, scandal and deceit.
I am going to leap right into the meat of it here and say that The Runner is not a happy film. If you’re one of those people who like a happy ending and for everything to be wrapped up at least a little bit by the end, you definitely shouldn’t go for this film. It has quite a dark and depressing finish.

The Runner Trailer. Austin Stark‘s The Runner (2015) movie trailer stars Nicolas Cage, Connie Nielsen, Sarah Paulson, Peter Fonda, and Wendell Pierce. The Runner‘s plot synopsis: “‘The Runner’ follows an idealistic but flawed politician (Cage), who, in the aftermath of the 2010 British Petroleum oil spill, is forced to confront his dysfunctional life after his career is destroyed in a sex scandal.”
The runner looks like Nicolas Cage returning to form is a good drama. Over the last three years, he has made many films of dubious quality. This film looks and feels looks to be the complete opposite of those films.
The Runner also stars Bryan Batt, Wanetah Walmsley, Fredric Lehne, Ciera Payton, Divine Prince Ty Emmecca, Christopher Berry, Kerry Cahill, James Moses Black, and Gus Rhodes.

Directed by Cary Fukunaga
