12 Best Richard Donner Movies, Ranked
Image
When you look in the movie dictionary under "journeyman director," you'll see a picture of Richard Donner. Okay, no such dictionary exists, but if it did, Donner would be there, and deservedly so. While the "auteur theory" gets deployed by critics (*cough* film snobs *cough*), far less attention is paid to the journeyman directors like Donner. These are filmmakers who don't see themselves as "artists" infusing their work with similar styles or themes, but as hard-working craftsmen who want to make a good movie. And when you look over Donner's 20-plus film career, and the remarkable diversity of pictures he produced, you'll see he did just that.

Okay, sure, he made a few duds, but the dude started working when President Eisenhower was still in office, so cut him some slack. During his 60-plus-year run, he launched the superhero genre, reinvented action movies, created movie stars, worked in multiple genres,...

20 Years After Its Release, This Cult Sci-fi Comedy Is Hyper-Jumping to a New Streaming Platform
Image
Every once in a while, there comes a movie whose concept is so wild that you have to see it to believe it. 20 years ago, a sci-fi comedy called The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy debuted in theaters, and it provided a different approach to stories that take place outside planet Earth. If you've either never watched it or completely forgotten about it, you will be glad to know that the Infinite Improbability Drive is directing the movie to Hulu on July 1.

The characters of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy are enough of a reason for you to want to check it out: Sam Rockwell (The White Lotus) plays a two-headed, three-armed alien who just wants to have fun in the middle of chaos. The late Alan Rickman (Harry Potter film series) voiced a depressed robot, and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit trilogy) plays a grumpy British guy who is...

Questlove recently dropped by The Jennifer Hudson Show, sharing his reaction to finding out that Kendrick Lamar paid homage to the Roots in a music video for his monumental Gnx album, which released last year.

Laila! Has a Vision for the R&b of Tomorrow

Laila! has flourished more in the year leading up to her 19th birthday than some artists do in decades. The Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and producer first broke through on TikTok with spacey viral ditties “Like That” and “Not My Problem,” showing her intrinsic ear for R&b’s current wave and its off-center potential. She quickly followed that with her purely DIY debut album, Gap Year!, which helped nab Tyler, the Creator and Solange as fans.

10 Weird Anime Characters With the Most Fan-Fiction on Ao3
Image
Anime fans have many ways to show their love and appreciation for their favorite series. Some create fanart, while others make different crafts to represent the anime they love. Other fans prefer to put their literary skills to use and write amazing fan-fiction. While it may seem natural that the most popular characters from a franchise, like Mha's Deku and Bakugo, get the most fan-fiction, that couldn't be further from the truth.

Sometimes fan-fiction writers will surprise the community by giving attention to a franchise's strangest characters. Characters like One Piece's Buggy the Clown or even Demon Slayer's Zenitsu are overlooked or even hated. Maybe they're just weird or annoying. Despite what some fans think, these characters seem to be the perfect protagonists for their several fan-fictions.

A 2008 Anime That Comes the Closest To Harry Potter: It Predates Both Mashle and Black Clover By Many Years
Image
Any mention of a world where magic rules, instantly takes us back to our childhood shaped by Harry Potter and Hogwarts. Even the world of anime and manga isn’t immune to the influence of the popular franchise, and anime series like Black Clover and Mashle are proof of that.

Magic reigns supreme and is the primary source of power in both these titles. However, long before both Black Clover and Mashle began their run, there was already an anime working on the same laws as Harry Potter. Released in 2008 for the first time, Soul Eater anime bears a striking resemblance with many plotlines from the Harry Potter series.

From the characters to the setting, it’s hard to miss the similarities. An exploration of these similarities would instantly make one think about why Soul Eater isn’t more popular as...

The 15 Best House M.D. Episodes Ranked
Image
Nowadays, Fox's "House M.D." almost feels like a relic of a different time in television history, in which a network show with over 20 episodes a year could still be essentially a prestige concoction, carried by smart, profound writing, heady themes, and ambitious character work, while still conforming enough to a cozy weekly formula to become a ratings hit -- one massive enough to cost Hugh Laurie his role in "Superman Returns," no less.

While some of the show's 177 episodes are so similar as to start blurring into each other in retrospect, many "House" episodes have stood the test of time as first-rate hours of television by any reasonable criteria -- installments in which Dr. Gregory House was not just one of the greatest detectives in TV history, but a catalyst for searching and creative storytelling that used medicine to reflect on the mysteries of the human soul.

Here, we've compiled...

Every Character Dexter Almost Killed but Didnt (And Why They Were Spared)
Image
This article mentions suicide and rape.

In Dexter, Dexter was told to always follow along with Harry's Code, which made sure he only killed other killers. He abided by this code as best as he could, which made him never kill innocent people; but it also made sure to ease his urge of wanting to kill people. Throughout the show, the code was tested, as was the luck of many of Dexter's potential victims.

In Dexter, a handful of victims were able to get away. Some didn't fit the code. Others just got lucky while Dexter was having an existential crisis. While many people who made it to the kill table didn't have a chance, there were a few who lucked out and were able to live on. There are also others who lucked out but met their fate elsewhere instead of at the hands of Dexter.

Italian Job Remake With Jason Statham & Mark Wahlberg Lands on Prime Video This Week
Image
One of the earlier action movie roles for action hero superstar Jason Statham is all set to race its way onto Prime Video this Friday. Statham is, of course, now considered to be one of the best action movie stars of all time, with his characters often depicted as gruff fighting experts who are quicker to use their fists than their words. Well, in a slight change of pace, fans can watch The Stath turn on the charm in The Italian Job, which is due to land on the streaming platform on November 1.

Starring alongside an all-star ensemble cast that includes Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron, Edward Norton, Seth Green, Mos Def, and Donald Sutherland, The Stath plays crew member Handsome Rob. Rather than a straight-up remake, The Italian Job is inspired by the 1969 British movie of the same name starring Michael Caine, and follows a gang of thieves who find...

Dragon Ball Daima Cast Guides (Japanese & Dubbed)
Image
Warning: Contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Daima episodes #1-#2.After a year of anticipation, Dragon Ball Daima has finally been released. The series premiered on Crunchyroll on October 11 as part of the fall 2024 anime season, and while there still isnt much thats known about its story, everything about it has done more and more to show it as being a visual masterpiece that Akira Toriyama undoubtedly put all his heart into making.

The trailers were the best way Dragon Ball Daima built up so much hype, and one thing thats been noted is that most of the trailers have featured no voice acting, instead relying solely on the visuals, animation, and any accompanying news stories to sell themselves. With the series now out, though, Dragon Ball Daima has finally confirmed some of its principal voice cast for both English and Japanese. Not every voice actor has been announced, but the...

10 Best Soul Eater Manga Covers, Ranked
Image
Ohkubo's distinct art style in Soul Eater is inspired by Harry Potter and Tim Burton, featuring spooky and quirky artwork. The series showcases exaggerated figures, bright colors, and spine-chilling visuals, creating unique and whimsical characters. The manga focuses on characters and their dynamics, like Black Star's bond with Tsubaki, reflecting the story's themes and relationships.

Channeling the mystical visual aesthetic inspired by Harry Potter and Tim Burton, Soul Eaters distinct art style was born. Author and illustrator Atsushi Ohkubos spooky and quirky artwork pairs well with the uncanny characters of his series. Nevada, U.S.A. may seem like an unsuspecting place, but the chilling shadows surrounding Death City make way for hilarious and gruesome adventures for protagonists Maka, Soul, Black Star, Death the Kid, and their friends in this supernatural shnen story.

The series' art style is distinct from its peers, making Ohkubos other series, like Fireforce, instantly recognizable.

Michel Gondry Sets Hollywood Return With Pharrell Williams-Inspired Feature Starring Da’Vine Joy Randolph & More
Image
It was just last week we were celebrating the 20th anniversary of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which catapulted Michel Gondry into the Hollywood system with the likes of Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet. After the failure of that superhero tentpole, he retreated back to France, directing a handful of smaller-scale features, the latest of which, The Book of Solutions, gets meta following a filmmaker struggling with the editing of his big-budget project. Gondry is now mounting his return to Hollywood, the details of which have now been unveiled.

Deadline reports he’s directing an untitled coming-of-age musical, which is loosely inspired by the upbringing of Pharrell Williams. Set to star Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, coming off her Oscar win for The Holdovers, the Universal-backed project is set in 1977 Virginia Beach. SXSW 2024 kicked off its first full day of music on March 12 with a smattering of must-see shows around town, plus some tension in the air thanks to the festival’s relationship with the U.S. Army. While a number of acts cancelled their official showcases, many of them continued to play unofficial shows for the audiences that SXSW brought to town, and several spoke out in support of the Palestinian people and against war.

Yasiin Bey: Drake’s Music Isn’t Hip-Hop, Won’t Survive the Coming “Collapse of an Empire”
Image
Between Pusha T, Kendrick Lamar, Anthony Fantano, and many more, we’ve heard some pretty good Drake disses over the years. But now, Yasiin Bey (fka Mos Def) is giving everyone a run for their money with a new diss of epic proportions. Evoking the literal collapse of modern civilization to drive his point home, the seasoned rapper said that Drizzy’s output is less “hip-hop” and more like shopping at Target.

The comments came during Bey’s recent appearance on the fashion podcast The Cutting Room Floor when host, Recho Omondi, asked point-blank if he considered Drake “hip-hop.” After a pause — and a begrudging “Why are you doing this to me?” — Bey unleashed his opinion: “Drake is pop to me. In the sense, like, if I was in Target in Houston and I heard a Drake song… it feels like a lot of his music is compatible with shopping.

Why Kelly Rowland's Controversial Freddy Vs Jason Line Is Still Debated 20 Years Later
Image
Slasher films are known for their one-liners, both the badass and the embarrassing. Dr. Loomis in the "Halloween" series, Freddy Krueger in the "A Nightmare on Elm Street" series, Ghostface in the numerous "Scream" flicks, Pinhead in the "Hellraiser" films, and just about everything Chucky has ever said throughout his franchise have all birthed quotes as memorable as the characters who say them. In the delightfully silly "Freddy vs Jason," one of the most infamous lines is not spoken by either slasher icon or even the film's final girl, but by the secondary character Kia, played by Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child.

When Kia comes face to face with Freddy Krueger, she doesn't cower in fear -- she mocks him. Freddy Krueger thrives on fear, and by choosing to humiliate him instead, she defangs him quite a bit. She spends much of the movie being mouthy to everyone anyway, so...

Hip-Hop At 50: Cheo Hodari Coker On Icons, Evolution & The Spirit That Remains – Guest Column
Image
Editors’ Note: This guest column by former Luke Cage showrunner and Creed II writer Cheo Hodari Coker is part of Deadline’s series commemorating the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop on August 11.

In 1999, Yasin Bey — then known as Mos Def – dropped the seminal album “Black On Both Sides.”

The first song, “Fear Not Of Man” still gets me every time I play it. It’s a classic – — just as powerful now as the first time I heard it two decades ago. A meditation on everything Hip-Hop is…and isn’t.

You know what’s going to happen with hip-hop? Whatever’s happening with us. If we smoked out, hip-hop is going to be smoked out. If we doin’ alright, hip-hop is gonna be doin’ all right.

We are hip-hop. Me. You. Everybody.

So the next time you ask yourself where is hip-hop going, ask yourself – where am I going?

Twenty-four years later,...

10 Musicians Who Turned Out To Be Surprisingly Good Actors
Image
Sting, Tupac Shakur, Flea, and Mos Def are just a few examples of musicians who have proven themselves to be talented actors as well. Beyoncé, Eminem, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, David Bowie, and Barbra Streisand are other musicians who have successfully transitioned to the world of acting. These musicians have been able to transcend their musical reputations and reinvent themselves through a variety of characters onscreen, proving that they are more than just musicians.

A handful of famous musicians have actually turned out to be surprisingly good actors. While many musical artists have dabbled in acting roles throughout their careers, very few have emerged and proven themselves as legitimate talents in music and acting. Many examples of musicians and recording artists appear in film and television in cameos that largely represent themselves and their famous personas. However, not many musicians have successfully been able to transcend their established reputations and...

Black Star Bring Comeback Album No Fear of Time to Bandcamp: Stream
Image
More than one year after its release, Black Star have made their long-awaited comeback album, No Fear of Time, available outside of the Luminary podcast network.

Originally released in May 2022 as a Luminary exclusive, No Fear of Time marked the first proper full-length from the duo of Talib Kweli and Yasiin Bey (f.k.a. Mos Def) in 24 years. It was produced entirely by their frequent collaborator Madlib.

Stream it below or purchase a digital copy via Bandcamp.

Black Star teased their sophomore album for years; back in 2019, Kweli even said the record was finished. Last year, the duo launched their podcast The Midnight Miracle with their good friend Dave Chappelle. An episode called “Bugs Bunny Mathematicx” took the role of “audio liner notes to introduce the album,” as the podcast’s hosts discussed No Fear of Time more in-depth.

“About three-four years ago I was visiting Yasiin in Europe...

6 Reasons Dexter Season 6 Was The Show's Worst
Image
Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Dexter season 6.

Dexter season 6 was the worst of the show's eight seasons by a long shot, and there are a few reasons why it dropped in quality. The celebrated drama series about a friendly-neighborhood serial killer Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall) had four incredible seasons and one very good season before completely falling short in season 6. Dexter is a highly intelligent sociopath who learned a strict code from his father at a young age to control his dark impulsive desire to commit murder. He is an odd type of vigilante who identifies and kills other serial killers while working for the Miami Metro Police Department as a blood splatter analyst.

Dexter season 6 follows him as he tries to uncover the mystery of the serial killer known as the Doomsday Killer. The uncharacteristically disappointing season 6 gave audiences initial hints that the Dexter season 6 series finale would be bad,...

The 16 Strongest Grim Reapers In Anime, Ranked by Power
Image
There have been countless interpretations of the grim reaper across all forms of media. In the anime medium, personifications of death are usually unconventional, and even when they fit some aspects of the Grim Reaper (or Shinigami), there still tend to be notable differences between their presentation and that of the deathly figure.

Related: 15 Darkest Manga Series Of All Time

Anime often personifies death as something or someone with great power, resulting in numerous iconic characters that fit the description. Some are experienced combatants and others are deific figures, but all of these individuals share one trait in common: they sow death and/or harvest souls on a regular basis.

Updated on May 29, 2023 by Kennedy King: While the conventions of the anime medium change over time, its emphasis on death never wavers. The Grim Reaper archetype continues to manifest in new characters, and as a result, even more of them deserve recognition.

See Bad Bunny Join Gorillaz to Perform ‘Tormenta’ for the First Time Together at Coachella
Image
Bad Bunny was his own opening act — in a way — before his Friday night headlining gig at Coachella as the singer made a surprise appearance during Gorillaz’ set to perform their collaboration “Tormenta” together for the first time.

Damon Albarn and Gorillaz — who for the past two Fridays had the slot before Bad Bunny on the main stage — also played “Tormenta” during Weekend One, but they were accompanied by Bad Bunny’s prerecorded vocals for that rendition. This time around, the masked Puerto Rican star himself joined in for the...

Gorillaz Literally Brought Everyone Out at Coachella Weekend 2

Emmys history favors nominations for both of the ‘White House Plumbers’ leading men
Image
The White House Plumbers (accidentally) took down the presidency, but can Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux take down their Emmy competition? The “White House Plumbers” stars are both contending in Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor, but only Harrelson is currently predicted to earn a nomination at the moment, sitting in fourth place, while Theroux is in ninth. If you’re predicting just one of them, you might want to reconsider that because this category is kinder to double noms than you might think.

Since 2000, there have been 10 projects that have fielded a pair of nominees in limited series/TV movie actor. And half of them hailed from HBO, home to “White House Plumbers” as well. In 2004, “Something the Lord Made” nabbed bids for Mos Def and Alan Rickman. Four years later, “Recount” stars Kevin Spacey and Tom Wilkinson faced off. The trend really took off in the 2010s, during...
