Famous German Democratic Republic singer-songwriter who was stripped from his citizenship whilst being on tour in West Germany. In the following weeks, many leading GDR intellectuals and artists such as Christa Wolf, Stefan Heym, Katharina Thalbach, Manfred Krug or Armin Mueller-Stahl protested against the socialist rulers (1976).

Lived together with Eva-Maria Hagen from 1965 to 1972.

Received 'Grosses Bundesverdienstkreuz' (West Germany's highest state decoration) (15 November 2006).

His father, a Communist resistance fighter of Jewish descent, was murdered in the Nazi German concentration camp Auschwitz in 1943.

Formed the Workers' and Students' Theater in 1961, whose show "Berliner Brautgang" documented the building of the Berlin wall. Two years later, the authorities shut it down, while Biermann was refused membership in the ruling party SED.

Lives in Hamburg and France.
