The Netflix Charts Are Now Dominated by a Dangerous Film Starring the Ultimate Horror Heroine: “a brilliant thriller”
Image
It’s always nice to see a standout effort from years past getting some love from the streaming scene, and that’s just what we’re here to talk about today. I’m talking about the chilling ‘90s crime thriller Copycat trending on Netflix right now!

The flick currently holds the #10 spot on the platform overall. Having recently added the film to their catalog, Copycat may continue to rise in the coming days. No matter what, it’s nice to see people connecting with this harrowing effort 30 years on from release.

If you haven’t yet experienced the film, Copycat is a supremely terrifying crime thriller that benefits from a competent script filled with twists and turns. Ann Biderman (Primal Fear) and David Madsen (Knightwatch) effectively mix pop psychology with serial killer lore, crafting a narrative that seamlessly blends elements of true crime with narrative fiction.

Not to mention, the...

This Serial Killer Thriller With a 'Starfleet Academy' Star Is Still Stalking Up the Streaming Charts
Image
A 1995 serial killer thriller continues to have surprising success on the streaming charts. 1995's Copycat, starring Sigourney Weaver and Holly Hunter as a pair of women on the trail of a killer, is holding steady at #9 on Netflix's Top Ten. The film was one of a spate of serial killer-based movies that hit the multiplexes in the wake of 1991's smash hit The Silence of the Lambs. There's no readily apparent explanation for the movie's ascent in the charts: perhaps streaming viewers simply yearn to be back in a Clinton Administration-era Blockbuster outlet.

The script was co-written by Ann Biderman, who would go on to create the TV series Southlandand Ray Donovan, and originally featured a male and a female lead; director Jon Amiel, coming off the Richard Gere-Jodie Foster romance Sommersby, felt there was a void for female-led thrillers, and had one role rewritten for an actress. Due...

After entering into final negotiations back in October, Variety has reported that Hardy, Mirren, and Brosnan have officially joined the Paramount+ series from Guy Ritchie and Ronan Bennett. ‘Fellow Travelers’ Series Creator Ron Nyswaner Is “Not Ready To Retire” As There’s More Queer American History To Unveil
Image
What is it like to have an all-consuming romance over the course of 30 years? Screenwriter-director Ron Nyswaner has written movies for over four decades, earning an Oscar nomination for Philadelphia, and has worked on critically acclaimed shows like Ray Donovan and Homeland. And now, with Showtime’s limited series Fellow Travelers, Nyswaner makes his debut as a TV creator.

Based on the Thomas Mallon novel, Fellow Travelers is a sweeping, tragic love story and political thriller chronicling the clandestine romance of two very different men who meet in the shadow of McCarthy-era Washington. Matt Bomer plays Hawkins Fuller, a man with a successful career in politics who generally avoids emotional entanglements — until he meets the idealistic Tim Laughlin (Jonathan Bailey). The two begin a romance just as Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declare war on “subversives and sexual deviants,” initiating one of the darkest periods in 20th-century American history.

Ron Nyswaner to Receive WGA East’s Walter Bernstein Award at Writers Guild Awards
Image
Ron Nyswaner will soon be traveling to New York to reunite with his Writers Guild of America East fellows for a grand occasion. The Oscar-nominated screenwriter, producer and showrunner has been selected to receive the Walter Bernstein Award at the 76th Writers Guild Awards at New York’s Edison Ballroom on April 14.

The honor — named after the late screenwriter who was blacklisted for his political views only to persevere and get his career back on track with such credits as Fail-Safe, Semi-Tough and Yanks — is presented to writers “who have demonstrated with creativity, grace and bravery a willingness to confront social injustice in the face of adversity,” per the organization.

Nyswaner has been doing that for pretty much his entire career. A prime example is Jonathan Demme’s 1993 film Philadelphia. Penned by Nyswaner, the Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington-starrer was the first major Hollywood film to dramatize the real-world...

Ray Donovan may return to screens via Paramount+ once it merges with Showtime. The series, which premiered on Showtime in 2013, ran for seven seasons and 82 total episodes, eventually going off the air in January 2020. The series followed Liev Schreiber as the title character, a fixer who works with many high-profile clients. The ensemble cast of the series, which was created by Ann Biderman, also included Paula Malcomson, Eddie Marsan, Dash Mihok, Steven Bauer, Katherine Moennig, Pooch Hall, Jon Voight, and Susan Sarandon.

Per Variety, Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish recently spoke about the future of Paramount+ - and potentially a Ray Donovan revival - at an investor meeting. Liev Schreiber on Revisiting ‘Ray Donovan’: ‘I Would Consider It’
Image
Liev Schreiber wouldn’t be opposed to revisiting “Ray Donovan,” he told the audience at Karlovy Vary Intl. Film Festival on Sunday. The beloved Showtime series, created by Ann Biderman, was canceled in 2020 after seven seasons. Following the fans’ outcry, “Ray Donovan: The Movie” premiered in 2022.

“I would consider it,” he said during a masterclass.

“It was always [longtime Showtime chief] David Nevins’ baby. I know he loves this character and this story, and I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear more from David.”

Schreiber admitted he was both “disappointed and relieved” by the show’s cancellation, but the outpouring of love and support touched him deeply.

“Naomi [Watts, his ex-partner] was a bigger star than me and we were flying all over the world with our children. But they were getting bigger and they needed to go to school and live in one place. She wanted to live in L.A.

A solo woman could win the drama writing Emmy for just the 6th time
Image
Like the Emmys’ Best Drama Directing category, there have not been a lot of individual female winners in Best Drama Writing. Only five solo women have ever won before — slightly better than the three female drama directing champs — but just like the directing race this year, there are three chances for another woman to join the drama writing winner’s circle.

Yahlin Chang (“Home” from “The Handmaid’s Tale“), Misha Green (“Sundown” from “Lovecraft Country”) and Rebecca Sonnenshine (“What I Know” from “The Boys”) are all individually nominated this year for their scripts. There are other two female nominees, Janet Mock and Our Lady J, but they share their bid for the “Pose” series finale with co-writers Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuck and Steve Canals. The other nominees are solo dudes: Peter Morgan (“War” from “The Crown”), Jon Favreau (“Chapter 16: The Rescue” from “The Mandalorian”) and Dave Filoni (“Chapter 13: The...

Liev Schreiber Teases ‘Ray Donovan’ Film In First Look Photo
Image
On Monday, Liev Schreiber posted a photo from the set of his upcoming Ray Donovan film, teasing his reunion with four longtime co-stars.

“I will miss this particular gaggle of actors very very much,” the actor wrote on his official Instagram account. “@raydonovan #comingsoon.”

In the photo, Schreiber is seen huddling up with Kerris Dorsey, Dash Mihok, Pooch Hall and Eddie Marsan. On Ray Donovan, Dorsey played Ray’s daughter, Bridget; Mihok played his younger brother, Bunchy. Hall played Ray’s younger half-brother Daryll, while Marsan played his older brother, Terry.

The acclaimed crime drama created by Ann Biderman aired for seven seasons on Showtime between 2013 and 2019. It centered on Schreiber’s professional “fixer” of the same name, watching as he arranged bribes, payoffs, threats, crime-scene clean-up, and other illegal activities on behalf of his (usually) celebrity clients.

While the series was officially canceled in February of 2020, the follow-up film was announced a year later.

‘Ray Donovan’ Feature Film with Liev Schreiber in the Works from Showtime
Image
A “Ray Donovan” movie is in the works from Showtime, the network announced on Wednesday. Series star Liev Schreiber will return to his role as the titular antihero, a professional “fixer” who trades in all sorts of illegal activity to protect his high profile clients. Series favorite Jon Voigt will reprise his role as Ray’s father Mickey Donovan, as will Kerris Dorsey as Ray’s daughter Bridget. In an intriguing turn, Schreiber will co-write the script along with series showrunner David Hollander, who will also serve as director.

The new film will pick up where the seventh and final season left off, with Mickey in the wind and Ray determined to find and stop him before he can cause any more carnage. It will also take a page from “The Godfather Part II” by marrying the present-day fallout from the Donovan/Sullivan feud with Ray and Mickey’s origin story of 30 years ago.

Ray Donovan’s time fixing other people’s problems may be coming to a close as Showtime’s Gary Levine admits that the drama is “nearing the end of its run”.

Showtime’s Co-President of Entertainment Levine told Deadline that it is expected to make a decision on the future of the Liev Schreiber-fronted show “in the next few weeks” and hinted that it is set to return for an eighth and final season.

With Shameless being handed an eleventh and final season this morning, this means the ViacomCBS premium network’s top two dramas could find themselves with one further season each.

“I think Ray Donovan is nearing the end of its run. We always talked about seven or eight seasons. Nothing has been decided yet but it’s fair to say it is nearing the end,” Levine said.

Emerald Fennell
‘Killing Eve’s’ Emerald Fennell could be just the 6th individual woman to take home the Best Drama Writing Emmy
Emerald Fennell
Emerald Fennell replaced Phoebe Waller-Bridge as showrunner for the second season of “Killing Eve,” and now she can do what her predecessor was unable to: become just the sixth solo woman to win the Best Drama Writing Emmy.

Fennell, who will cede showrunner duties to Suzanne Heathcote for Season 3, is nominated for penning the second episode of Season 2, “Nice and Neat.” She is the only woman nominated by herself; Kira Snyder shares her nomination with Bruce Miller for “The Handmaid’s Tale.” The other nominees are Peter Gould and Thomas Schnauz (“Better Call Saul”), David Benioff and D.B. Weiss (“Game of Thrones”), Jed Mercurio (“Bodyguard”) and Jesse Armstrong (“Succession”).

First given out at the 7th Primetime Emmy Awards in 1955, Best Drama Writing has long skewed male. It took 19 years before the category crowned its first individual female champ, Joanna Lee, for “The Waltons” in 1974. Five years later, Michele Gallery (“Lou Grant”) prevailed,...

‘Ray Donovan’s Pooch Hall Escapes Jail With DUI & Child Endangerment Plea Deal
The clan of Ray Donovan is going to get to stick together thanks to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.

In a plea deal unveiled in La Superior Court today in Pasadena, Marion “Pooch” Hall won’t be facing a potential six-years behind bars for charges of driving under the influence and endangering his two-year old son last fall.

Instead, the actor who has played half-brother Daryll Donovan on Showtime’s Liev Schreiber-led Hollywood fixer series since its first season saw his child endangerment felony charge reduced to a misdemeanor. That move from prosecutor Deputy D.A. Lisa Tanner resulted in Hall receiving three years probation and having his driver’s license suspended for six months. Add to that and his no-contest plea Tuesday, Hall has to enter into a three-month alcohol abuse seminar and complete a one-year parenting class.

All of which means, the upcoming seventh...

Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer in Killing Eve (2018)
Phoebe Waller-Bridge (‘Killing Eve’) aiming to be sixth solo woman to win Best Drama Writing Emmy
Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer in Killing Eve (2018)
Phoebe Waller-Bridges (“Killing Eve”) is the only female nominee in the Best Drama Writing Emmy field of six. And “six” will also be associated with her should she win because only five other solo women have won the category before.

Since Best Drama Writing was added at the 7th Primetime Emmys in 1955, undergoing various name changes, the category has almost exclusively been a boys’ club. It took 19 years before Joanna Lee became the first individual woman to win, prevailing for “The Waltons.” In 1979, Michele Gallery (“Lou Grant”) joined her, followed by Patricia Green (“Cagney & Lacey”) and Ann Biderman (“NYPD Blue”) in 1994. Twenty long years later, Moira Walley-Beckett ended the drought with a statuette for penning “Ozymandias,” the best episode of “Breaking Bad.”

There were female winners in between Biderman’s and Walley-Beckett’s triumphs, but they all co-wrote their winning scripts with men. Robin Green (“The Sopranos”) shared her 2001 win with Mitchell Burgess,...

Showtime’s Ray Donovan returns for its sixth season on Sunday, October 28 at 9 pm Et/Pt, and judging by the trailer released today during the network’s TCA presentation, the Liev Schreiber fixer drama has lost none of its punch – or its Susan Sarandon, who is back as a series regular.

Three of the most popular and critically acclaimed serialised dramas. The Mount Rushmore of TV. Look up any list and you’ll see them there, digging their elbows in and jostling for position inside the top ten.

But if we’re going with the Mount Rushmore metaphor, there’s a blank space on the mountain and an argument for Ray Donovan to have his face carved into the rock, nestled between McNulty, Tony and Heisenberg.

Donovan’s the answer to Hollywood’s biggest problems: Heavyweight boxing champ has a dead girl in his bath tub? Call Ray. Pop megastar bribed with a sex tape leak?...

Ray Donovan Season 4 Episode 2 Review: Marisol
Come back, Ann Biderman, come back!!

Ann Biderman was the creator of Ray Donovan who left at the end of Ray Donovan Season 2. She made some stunningly beautiful episodes of the series before she left that focused on family. A flawed family. A very flawed family, but one that was humorous and one for which you could see hope.

If you watched along with me for Ray Donovan Season 3, you know I saw more than just a flawed family, but a flawed show. It was meandering, seemed to have lost its purposed and lost sight of the characters.

By Ray Donovan Season 4 Episode 2, I'm wondering if anybody knows these characters at all anymore. They're barely recognizable.

And when the people they once were do appear, they're dragged down with bad dialogue and attempts to make the show edgy. How may times do you have to say fuck and cock in any one episode?...

And an arcane construct, if that really exists," he adds, with a shout-out to Donovan creator Ann Biderman. With Katie Holmes and Ian McShane joining…...
