Plot: Famed opera singer Maria Callas retreats to Paris in the 1970s after a glamorous yet tumultuous life in the public eye.
Review: Pablo Larrain‘s loose trilogy about famous twentieth-century women, beginning with 2016’s Jackie and 2021’s Spencer, comes to a close with Maria. Based on the life of revered opera singer Maria Callas, Larrain’s biopic focuses on the least recognizable of the three women. That Callas’ notoriously short life is not as easily remembered compared to Jackie Kennedy or Princess Diana affords Maria the ability to examine the singer’s life from a vantage point that is less sterile and distant than the previous two films. With a direct connection to Jackie, Maria retains some of the languid pacing and uneven creative choices that prevented Larrain’s prior biopics from being as strong as they could have been. However, after solid performances from Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart,...

There are effectively three stories being told in Maria. The first is the surface-level plot, the life of Maria Callas, told through that life’s final few days: the legendarily charismatic American-born Greek singer who beguiled the opera world with her exceptional voice and her dramatic private life, a foundational myth of the definitional diva. It is also the story of Pablo Larraín, the Chilean filmmaker who has become obsessed with making sumptuous, psychologically rich period biopics about regal 20th century women, and seems to be slowly building his own unique subgenre. The third and perhaps most compelling story is that of Angelina Jolie, in the title role, taking her first acting gig in three years, and her first leading dramatic role in over a decade. Her very presence here is a story in itself.
As Maria Callas, Jolie is staggeringly good. Perhaps the best she’s ever been. From the off,...

Angelina Jolie has taken on several iconic roles over the years, including Maleficent, Lara Croft, and more recently, Thena in Eternals. Her latest challenge comes from taking on the role of Maria Callas, the greatest opera singer ever, in the latest Netflix Original biopic, Maria. The film recently premiered on Netflix and has quickly risen to the top 10, sitting in the #8 spot, which is impressive but still perhaps not as high as many Netflix Originals reach during their first days on the platform. In addition to Jolie, Maria also stars Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, and Haluk Bilginer, and the film currently sits at matching scores of 73% from both critics and audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes. It is also playing in select theaters while also streaming on Netflix.

Angelina Jolie has been a celebrated actor for a number of years. She is famous for both her on and off-screen life, as she was in a high-profile relationship with actor and former Mr. and Mrs. Smith co-star Brad Pitt for over a decade. Prior to this, Jolie was also known for winning Best Supporting Actress for her acclaimed role in Girl, Interrupted. She was also later nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress for the stirring family drama Changeling.
While she had a peak period in the 2000s, Jolie's career has slowed down a bit in recent years. In 2021, she made her MCU movie playing Thena in Eternals, but then did not act in any projects in 2022 or 2023. Her career also saw other feature film gaps. For example, the actor had another three-year gap between her 2016 voice acting role in Kung Fu Panda 3 and her starring role in...

Maria is finally streaming on Netflix after months of Oscar buzz surrounding Angelina Jolie’s performance — but what are Jolie’s chances of finally winning Best Actress? After Jackie and Spencer, Maria is director Pablo Larraín’s latest biopic chronicling the tragic life of a significant woman from 20th-century history, completing his unofficial trilogy. This one stars Jolie as opera singer Maria Callas, alongside Haluk Bilginer as Aristotle Onassis and Caspar Phillipson as John F. Kennedy. The trailer for Maria dropped in September, and Jolie’s fans have been eagerly awaiting the film’s Netflix release ever since.
When Maria premiered at the 81st Venice International Film Festival earlier this year, it received mostly positive reviews, with critics singling out Jolie’s performance for particular praise. This has led to widespread Oscar buzz around Jolie’s turn in Maria. After being released in select theaters across the U.S. on...

Maria makes its intentions clear early. In September 1977, legendary opera singer Maria Callas (Angelina Jolie) is in her final days, and her grasp on reality is tenuous at best. She rearranges the world with herself at the center, though where once entire crowds were subject to her whims, now there remain only her loyal butler (Pierfrancesco Favino) and maid (Alba Rohrwacher). They worry over her declining health. By abusing her medication, she hallucinates entire conversations. She detests doctors, who feel compelled to disrupt her with their facts.

Angelina Jolie stars as Maria's eponymous character, Maria Callas, a renowned opera singer in the middle of the 20th century. The 2024 biographical psychological drama film, directed by Pablo Larraín and written by Steven Knight, follows the later years of Callas' life, which were mostly spent in Paris, France, away from the public eye. Callas experienced a lot of turmoil over the course of her 53 years of living. However, Maria director Larraín wanted to focus on the ending of the opera singer's story rather than chronicle every single detail of her life and career.
Maria is the final installment in Pablo Larraín's trilogy chronicling important women of the 20th century, following in the footsteps of Jackie (Jackie Kennedy) and Spencer (Princess Diana).

Maria is a new biographical film about renowned opera singer Maria Callas directed by Pablo Larraín and written by Steven Knight. Starring Angelina Jolie in the titular role, the film focuses primarily on the final years of Callas' life and the complicated story behind her death. Maria has been a highly anticipated release due to praise around Jolie's performance, with many calling it one of the best of her career and a contender in a year of radically competitive acting performances (as far as awards season goes).
Furthermore, Maria is the third installment in a trilogy of films by Larraín that highlight historical female figures within a concentrated period of their lives, preceded by Jackie (2016) and Spencer (2021). The stars of both of these films went on to receive Oscar nominations for their work. Thus, the hype around Maria is understandable, especially as it pertains to Jolie's performance. Pablo Larraín‘s latest feature film “Maria” is written by Steven Knight and tells the story of world-renowned opera singer Maria Callas, as portrayed by Oscar winner Angelina Jolie. The Netflix biopic has been receiving awards buzz since it premiered at the Venice International Film Festival earlier this summer, and now we have a much better idea about the extreme lengths Larraín’s team took in order to recreate Callas’ fascinating world.

Angelina Jolie is all set to dazzle us as one of the world’s greatest opera singers in her new film, but before Maria hits Netflix on Dec. 11, the Academy Award-winning actress recently took time out of her busy schedule to shut down what she referred to as an "insane question." Jolie stars as Maria Callas in Pablo Larrain’s new biopic, which is thus far getting rave reviews from all the right people, and generating a healthy amount of Oscar buzz ahead of award’s season.
Speaking with The Times about what went into making Maria, and how she felt embodying someone with such a rich and complicated history, the conversation then turned to Jolie herself. When asked what a biographical movie about the Tomb Raider star might look like, it was then that Jolie "scorned" the reporter for even broaching the subject.
"That gets the most insane question award.

“My goal was to recreate and reach perfection in what the clothing was,” declares two-time Oscar-nominated costume designer Massimo Cantini Parrini (“Pinnocchio” and “Cyrano”) about “Maria.” For our recent webchat he adds, “Let’s not forget that Maria Callas is still an icon, and music lovers adore her, they love her, so my goal was also not to disappoint the audience,” he says, adding that it was “a huge responsibility, because I was going to take to the screen the clothing that Maria Callas wore during her performances in her operas, and I have to say that I am maniacal about details. I have to make sure that every single detail is taken care of. So I studied the proportions, the cuts the fabrics very, very closely.” Watch our video interview above.

Between Jackie, Spencer, and, now, Maria, Pablo Larraín has thrice committed the cardinal sin of taking a female icon of the 20th century and, in an attempt to hold a mirror up to her multitudes, flattened her into the equivalent of a kitschy postage stamp. Though his sense of style seems like an attempt to absolve him of indulging in the generic tendencies of the biopic, his dependence on repeating the same ideas with the same self-seriousness does a disservice to his supposed goal of bestowing a sense of agency on complex, hyper-surveilled icons of femininity. Too often, as in Maria, he conflates a woman moping around empty rooms to brash music with a more tactile notion of interiority or complexity.
So it’s a shame that Angelina Jolie—portraying Callas in the final week of her life, living somewhat isolated in an opulent Paris apartment—is relegated to playing by the Larraín rulebook.

They say that in life there are three guarantees: death, taxes, and that if there is a complicated woman in need of a stylishly done, painstakingly constructed biopic, then Pablo Larraín is the man to make it. Having sensitively explored the grief of Jackie Kennedy in the wake of JFK's death with 2017's Natalie Portman starrer Jackie, and then made a haunting portrait of Princess Diana's vulnerability with Kristen Stewart in 2021's Spencer, Larraín has enlisted the services of Angelina Jolie to help tell the story of fêted opera singer Maria Callas in the aptly titled Maria. Check out the first teaser for the film below:
"Maria, what do you want to sing?" asks a pianist as Jolie's Maria looks out on a grand, empty music hall. From there, we get shots of Callas – in black and white, on vintage film, in a plethora of gorgeous outfits...

Angelina Jolie stars as Maria Callas in the latest aching biopic from Pablo Larraín. Check out the Maria trailer.
Pablo Larraín truly is the king of biopics about sad women. His 2016 film Jackie, starring Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy, captured Jackie’s grief perfectly and in 2021, Larraín explored Princess Diana’s complex inner state with Spencer. Of course, the director has done a lot of other, equally excellent films but his latest, Maria, feels like the third part in an unofficial trilogy of films about women grieving.
Take a look at the Maria trailer.
Maria is set in picturesque Paris and explores some of the final years of opera singer Maria Callas’ life. The film had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival where it was warmly received. Maria will also screen as part of the BFI London Film Festival in October.

Angelina Jolie has transformed into the role of a lifetime, portraying legendary opera singer Maria Callas for Pablo Larraín’s latest biopic, “Maria.”
After Larraín helmed “Spencer” and “Jackie,” the auteur is now taking on the Greek opera star whose own life mirrored the dramatic tragedies she also brought to the stage. The film is set during the last days of the chanteuse’s life in 1977. She died of a heart attack at age 53.
“Maria” concludes Larraín’s biopic trilogy. To note, Callas and Jackie Kennedy both shared a lover in Aristotle Onassis, portrayed by Haluk Bilginer in “Maria.” Onassis famously left Callas to marry Kennedy.
Callas was a world-famous soprano singer and infamously had a feud with Renata Tebaldi. The Greek-American singer suffered from near-sightedness throughout her life and was referred to as La Divina or “The Divine One.”

AFI Fest continues to roll out selections for next month’s festival ahead of the reveal of the full lineup.
The latest additions, billed as red carpet premieres, include the Hugh Grant-starrer Heretic from Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, and Pablo Larraín’s Maria starring Angelina Jolie as the famed opera singer.
Heretic comes first, with its L.A. premiere scheduled for Oct. 24, while Maria will hit the big screen on Oct. 26. Both will screen at Hollywood’s historic Tcl Chinese Theatre. Heretic, to be released by A24 on Nov. 8, follows two missionaries (Sophie Thatcher, Chloe East) who are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical man. Larraín’s Maria casts Jolie as Callas and follows her on her final days in Paris. The film, released by Netflix this fall, also stars Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher, Haluk Bilginer and Kodi Smit-McPhee.

Angelina Jolie says Maria, her latest movie where she plays the world’s greatest opera singer, is about an artist faced with creative struggles and doubt.
“Towards the end of her life of her life she had highs and the greatest highs, were where she could really feel she was connecting, and she had times where she felt she couldn’t, and it really broke her and she felt she wasn’t able to connect,” Jolie added when introducing a private screening at the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday.
Pablo Larrain’s biopic Maria, based on true accounts, tells the tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and reimagined during her final days in 1970s Paris.

At the Academy Awards ceremony held earlier this year, Emma Stone was awarded her second best actress Oscar, a mere seven years after winning her first. You might think that winning multiple acting Oscars would be an extreme rarity, but you would be wrong. Stone became the 45th performer ever conferred more than one.
Why do I bring this up? Because if anyone thinks that Angelina Jolie cannot win the best actress Oscar at the next Academy Awards ceremony because she already won once before — in a different category, mind you, best supporting actress, for Girl, Interrupted, which came out exactly 25 years ago — then I’ve got news for you: think again.
Jolie has certainly made a strong case for herself with a daring, tour de force performance as the legendary but troubled opera singer Maria Callas in Maria, the final installment of Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín’s unofficial trilogy...
