Mike Colter Reunites With Robert & Michelle King On Legal Drama ‘Cupertino’ In Works At CBS
Image
Like other prolific showrunners, Robert and Michelle King are starting to build a King-verse, bringing actors from one series to another as new characters.

Following the end of the Kings’ supernatural drama Evil, one of its leads, Mike Colter — who also recurred on the duo’s The Good Wife and offshoot The Good Fight — is set to star in Kings’ latest project, Cupertino, pending a series order by CBS.

The legal drama, which was originally set up at CBS for development last summer, took a major step forward in May when, after the Kings’ pilot script had been well received, the network commissioned a full writers room to produce 12 more scripts. The room will open this fall after Robert King is done directing an episode of the duo’s CBS crime drama series Elsbeth, which returns for a third season.

Bringing Colter on board gives another boost to Cupertino — described...

Jinger Duggar’s Love for Surprising TV Show Raises Eyebrows Among Fans
Image
Jinger Duggar‘s apparent love Gilmore Girls recently raised eyebrows among the former Counting On star’s fans. On June 28, a Reddit user pointed out that Jinger, 31, seems to be a fan of the popular comedy-drama series starring Alexis Bledel, Lauren Graham, Milo Ventimiglia, Scott Patterson, Kelly Bishop, Jared Padalecki, and more. “Jinger being a fan of Gilmore Girls is so interesting,” the Redditor shared alongside a photo of Jinger with a red Luke’s Diner mug. “Seeing that she even owns a Luke’s mug is making me wonder why she loves that show so much. Obviously it’s a great show, but it is centered around the fact that Lorelei fled her home at 16 and decided that she wanted to be independent and nothing like her parents. It’s interesting that this storyline seems so dear to Jinger.” The series follows Lorelai Gilmore, a single mom who got...

Gilmore Girls Creators’ New Show Canceled By Prime Video Despite Two-Season Order
Image
Prime Video has been in the news recently for some high-profile cancellations. The Wheel of Time, a sprawling fantasy epic, was recently axed. The big-budget adaptation of the Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson novels saw a decline in viewership for its most recent third installment. Despite the fact that the drama series is reportedly well-liked by executives, with a strong global audience, that wasn't enough to pave the way for The Wheel of Time season 4.

It speaks to the fact that Prime Video, outside of action shows like Reacher and superpowered stories like The Boys and Invincible, is struggling with some of the quieter genres that make up a more balanced television portfolio. That is exemplified in the streamer's latest cancellation, which comes as something of a surprise.

Étoile Cancelled After One Season at Amazon, Despite Two-Season Order

Étoile is taking its final bow, a little earlier than expected.

Amazon’s Prime Video has cancelled the Amy Sherman-Palladino ballet comedy after just one season, our sister site Deadline reports, despite Amazon giving the series a two-season order initially. The decision to cancel “came down largely to performance vs. cost,” Deadline says.

‘Étoile’ Canceled By Prime Video After Season 1 Of Two-Season Order
Image
Exclusive: Adieu, Étoile. Prime Video is not proceeding with a second season of Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s ballet drama series, Deadline has learned. The streamer and Amazon MGM Studios will continue to support the series’ Emmy campaign in the comedy categories.

In the Palladinos’ followup to their critical and commercial hit for Prime Video, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, they received a two-season initial pickup for Étoile in 2023. (Mrs. Maisel itself scored Prime Video’s first multi-year order with a two-season pickup in 2017 off a pilot. Étoile was ordered straight-to-series. )

While most multi-season orders result in multi-season runs, that is not guaranteed, and there have been exceptions. There is still an evaluation process after each season that triggers a formal green light with contingencies built in. That is something Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power goes through, getting a Season 2 and, most recently...

‘Étoile’ creators on writing a show for ‘genius’ Luke Kirby
Image
Kelly Bishop. Alex Borstein. Milo Ventimiglia. Liza Weil. Emily Bergl … and Luke Kirby. When it comes to casting, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino are nothing if not loyal, and their ensembles inevitably feature more than one familiar face from series past. So after his Emmy-winning turn in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, it comes as little surprise that they would put Kirby center stage in their latest series, Étoile.

In this installment of the Dream Team: Étoile series, the creators talk with their leading man about his first audition, the “lifetime” commitment he made to them, and finally fulfilling his costume wish.

Gold Derby: Luke, how did you first find your way into the Palladino-verse?

Luke Kirby: I had an audition. My agent called me and said, "You have an audition," and it was for Lenny Bruce. And he said, "You could actually maybe get this role because you...

Why Logan Calls Rory Ace In Gilmore Girls
Image
Fans of "Gilmore Girls," Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino's cozy series about a mother and daughter living in the small hamlet of Stars Hollow, know that the younger Gilmore, Rory (Alexis Bledel), has three major relationships throughout the course of the show. As her mother Lorelai (Lauren Graham) looks on, Rory dates Dean Forester (Jared Padalecki) and Jess Mariano (Milo Ventimiglia) while she's still in high school at the prestigious Chilton Academy, and when she enrolls at Yale University, Rory meets the wealthy, quick-witted Logan Huntzberger (Matt Czuchry) and is immediately smitten. Sure, Rory has other trysts and flings, but these three guys are her main partners, and ever since the series ended in 2007, fans have been arguing about which one is best at length.

I could go on at length about how Dean is an emotional black hole and wet mop dressed up to look like a real boy who,...

“You’re Older and Wiser”: ‘Gilmore Girls’ Alum Shares Biggest Differences on New Amy Sherman-Palladino Show ‘Étoile’
Image
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the WB series Gilmore Girls. The early aughts dramedy ran for seven seasons and launched the careers of many, including Melissa McCarthy, Lauren Graham, and Sean Gunn. The ensemble case of the Amy Sherman-Palladino show is memorable, even a quarter of a century later. Now, 25 years later, Sherman-Palladino has launched yet another new show with her husband Daniel Palladino, Étoile. The ballet-centered show features two companies swapping dancers internationally. Another ensemble show for the Palladinos also features some Gilmore Girls alums. This includes Yanic Truesdale, who played Michele Gerard on Gilmore Girls and plays Raphael inÉtoile. In an interview with People, Truesdale broke down what it was like working on an Asp show again.

"We're all older," Truesdale said. "We were kids! That's a big difference, because you're not the same person. I was 28. Amy was early 30s. So, we were still trying...

All the ‘Gilmore Girls’ and ‘Maisel’ Stars in ‘Étoile’
Image
Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino are no stranger to reviving their favorites in their projects. The “Gilmore Girls” and “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” creators lean on talent they trust and have built relationships with in their new series “Étoile.

Their new Prime Video comedy series “Étoile” is no exception. “Maisel” standout Luke Kirby stars as the head of the New York City’s premiere ballet company, who faces a tough decision in order to save the storied institution. And “Gilmore Girls” favorite Yanic Truesdale returns as a new Frenchman

“It’s only because we feel like we made the right choice before,” Daniel Palladino told TheWrap of bringing back talent. “If we feel this actor would work well with this character in this new thing, we just want to hire him back.”

“They’re also not surprised when they get a huge script,” Amy Sherman-Palladino joked. “Other people feel terrified and start to sob.

Étoile Season 1 Review: A Balletic Spectacle with Sharp Wit
Image
When two premier ballet companies agree to swap their leading lights for a year, the gesture reads less like artistic generosity and more like a cultural Marshall Plan (minus the guitars). Post-pandemic, with audiences thinned out and endowments under siege, Jack McMillan and Geneviève Lavigne—each tethered to their city’s legacy—must treat their dancers as both ambassadors and assets. Crispin Shamblee bankrolls the operation, a benefactor who might as well wear a powder-blue cape labeled “Philanthro-Villain.”

The series unfolds over eight hour-long episodes that feel bifurcated—Act I’s tentative overtures give way to Act II’s combustible reckonings. Midseason, just as the Nutcracker looms, the narrative pivots so sharply it threatens to send you flying off your seat (or pointe shoe). Time is marked by rehearsals, ticket launches and whispered backstage politics, though occasionally one wishes for actual clock faces.

New York’s rehearsal rooms gleam with industrial chic; Paris’s theaters,...

‘Étoile’ reviews: Critics praise ‘strong performances’ but ding new Prime Video series for its ‘ungainly jumping’
Image
Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s latest dramedy, Étoile (the French word for "star"), leaps into the world of professional ballet, and critics are mixed on the results.

Set in modern-day New York and Paris, the show stars Luke Kirby as New York City’s Metropolitan Ballet Theatre executive director Jack McMillan, and Charlotte Gainsbourg as Paris’ Le Ballet National interim director Geneviève Lavigne. The Prime Video show “follows the dancers and artistic staff of two world-renowned ballet companies as they embark on an ambitious gambit to save their storied institutions: swapping their most talented stars.”

The show received an 88 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, with a range of reviews.

“For six or seven episodes, the hour-long series is likably light-on-its-feet, infused with its creators’ love and admiration for this world and boasting strong lead performances from Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg as well as a knockout English-language debut from costar Lou de Laâge,...

‘Étoile’ Review: Luke Kirby and Charlotte Gainsbourg Anchor Amy Sherman-Palladino’s Grand Dance Drama
Image
Since “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” ended its 22-time Emmy-winning run in 2023, TV series have been awfully short on temperamental artists, fast-talking New Yorkers and whip-smart female characters. The new Prime Video series “Étoile” boasts all of those things — plus pouty Parisians, complex choreography and the most leg warmers you’ve seen since the 1980s.

For their much-anticipated follow-up to “Maisel,” husband-wife writing-producing team Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino chose to leap into the rarified world of classical dance, spotlighting two fictional companies, the Metropolitan Ballet Theater in New York and Le Ballet National in Paris. Their anxious but charismatic leaders — Jack McMillan and Geneviève Lavigne, respectively — agree to a single-year foreign-exchange, swapping their top artists — dancers, choreographers, conductors — in order to boost ticket sales and revitalize interest in a centuries-old art form. “A lot of our dancers have abandoned toe shoes for TikTok, the dressing rooms are filled with screaming...

‘Gilmore Girls’ Lauren Graham Reveals Which Was the Toughest Scene To Shoot From Her Iconic TV Series
Image
When you think of Gilmore Girls, a few things come to mind: coffee, Lorelai and Rory, maybe Yale or Chilton, and Friday Night Dinners. The concept of Friday Night Dinners was introduced as part of the deal that Lorelai (Lauren Graham) made with her parents, Richard (Ed Herrmann) and Emily (Kelly Bishop), for them to help pay for Rory's (Alexis Bledel) private school tuition. Emily tells Lorelai in the pilot that, in addition to having a financial role in their lives, she wanted an active role. And thus, Friday Night Dinners were born. Throughout seven seasons, almost every episode featured one of these dinner scenes.

Recently, on Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy podcast, Graham opened up about the fact that those were some of the most difficult scenes to shoot:

"I mean it's tough because I don't want to wreck anything for anybody. I loved those scenes. They were...

“You Can’t Get Me”: ‘Gilmore Girls’ Star Lauren Graham Gives Her Two Cents on the Rory Boyfriend Debate
Image
There are great pop culture debates that can divide a fandom. Unfortunately, it usually involves an iconic ship or two associated with television shows. When it comes to the 2000s WB show, Gilmore Girls, the big debate has always been who of the three main boyfriends that Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) has is best. Cast and fans alike have weighed in on the "boyfriend debate" over the years. The three boyfriends in question are Dean Forrester (Jared Padalecki), Jess Mariano (Milo Ventimiglia), and Logan Huntzberger (Matt Czuchry).

The three were vastly different from one another. Dean was the hometown good ole boy, tall and handsome, very much the archetype of a first boyfriend for Rory. Jess was the bad boy that made her question everything, but shared her taste in books and music and pushed her, sometimes too much. Logan was her college boyfriend and the pair had an unorthodox...

“It Went on For a While”: ‘Gilmore Girls’ Lauren Graham Explains Which Storyline Was Hard To Get Behind
Image
Even if an actor stays with a show from the pilot to the finale, there's bound to be episodes or even entire plotlines that they don't agree with. When Gilmore Girls' Lauren Graham appeared on Alex Cooper's Call Her Daddy podcast, the Lorelai Gilmore actress revealed the one plotline she struggled to get behind. "There’s a year when Alexis [Bledel] and I — Rory and Lorelai — are in a fight for a long time and we would talk about it, and Amy [Sherman-Palladino] was like, 'You know you can’t do a show for this long and not have conflict.'" The plotline in question took place at the end of Season 5 and lasted through part of Season 6 but for fans who had watched the "freakishly close" mother-daughter duo, the moments leading up to their eventual reconciliation felt like an eternity. Graham goes on to say:

"I forget even what the...

Lauren Graham Reveals Which ‘Gilmore Girls’ Storyline She Wasn’t the Biggest Fan Of
Image
Lauren Graham has revealed which Gilmore Girls storyline she wasn’t the biggest fan of during her time on the dramedy.

The actress who played the beloved Lorelai Gilmore on the hit show, which ran for seven seasons from 2000-07, was the latest guest on the Call Her Daddy podcast. At one point, host Alex Cooper asked which storyline from the series “was a little hard for you to get behind.”

“There’s a year when Alexis [Bledel] and I — Rory and Lorelai — are in a fight for a long time and we would talk about it, and Amy [Sherman-Palladino, creator] was like, ‘You know you can’t do a show for this long and not have conflict,'” Graham recalled. “I forget even what the conflict was but it went on for a while, and that’s the one that I would hear from people that they didn’t like.”

Amy Sherman-Palladino Is Still "Angry" About 'Bunheads' Cancellation [Exclusive]
Image
We all have one show that, if given the chance, we'd ask for it not to be cancelled. For longtime fans of Gilmore Girls and Amy Sherman-Palladino, that show tends to be Bunheads. The show ran for a singular season from 2012-2013 when everyone was still reeling from the conclusion of Gilmore Girls five years prior. While many fans knew that it would be unlikely to have the same spirit as Gilmore Girls, with star Lauren Graham on Parenthood and her being such a huge part of Gilmore Girls' success, fans were hungry for Asp's next project. She'd left Gilmore Girls at the end of Season 6, resulting in a mixed bag of fan feelings for Season 7.

Sherman-Palladino is once again trying her hand at the world of ballet with her upcoming show, Étoile, which looks to have a much different tone than the dramedy-esque tone of Bunheads, but it...

It’s Amy Sherman-Palladino’s world and we’re all just watching it.

Or at least that was the premise of the PaleyFest L.A. panel that looked back on the prolific TV creator’s hit shows, “Gilmore Girls” and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and previewed her new ballet comedy “Étoile.”

Sherman-Palladino was greeted by a roar of applause and a standing ovation from fans who packed the Dolby Theater in Hollywood on Saturday. She smiled and waved as she strode across the stage, seeming truly delighted to have all her actors assemble like the Avengers. But she found it a little tough to focus on the momentousness of the occasion.

“Sorry, I spent the whole red carpet staring at Lauren’s ass and Rachel’s tits. People kept talking about lines that meant something to me,” Sherman-Palladino quipped as she settled into her seat on the “multiverse” panel, sandwiched...

"I Always Felt That There Was a Front": 'Gilmore Girls' Kelly Bishop Breaks Down Emily's "Human" Side [Exclusive]
Image
Juggling character development in an ensemble cast is a major undertaking. When it came to the hit WB show Gilmore Girls, the focus was of course, on Lauren Graham's Lorelai Gilmore and Alexis Bledel's Rory Gilmore. The mother-daughter dynamic was the main driving force of the Amy Sherman Palladino-created show, but there were also moments with Lorelai and Rory's extended family that fans got to see grow and develop over the course of seven seasons. Lorelai had a complicated relationship with her parents after running away with a newborn Rory when she was just a teenager. Played by Kelly Bishop and Ed Herrmann, Emily and Richard Gilmore re-entered Lorelai's life when she needed money for Rory's private school tuition.

Initially flat, stuck-up characters, Emily and Richard also grew tremendously across seven seasons, along with their relationships with both Lorelai and Rory. When speaking with Collider's Taylor Gates at PaleyFest,...

Image
The worlds of Gilmore Girls, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Étoile collided on Saturday night as PaleyFest LA hosted a celebration of creator Amy Sherman-Palladino.

The event, dubbed a toast to “The Amy Sherman-Palladino Multiverse,” welcomed Lauren Graham and Kelly Bishop from Gilmore Girls; Rachel Brosnahan, Alex Borstein and Luke Kirby from Maisel; and Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou de Laâge from new series Étoile, in which Kirby also stars. Sherman-Palladino and her husband/writing partner Daniel Palladino joined the actors at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre for a 90-minute reflection on the writer-producer’s stacked resumé.

The show “follows the dancers and artistic staff of two world-renowned ballet companies as they embark on an ambitious gambit to save their storied institutions: swapping their most talented stars.” It’s the second series mounted by Sherman-Palladino and Palladino set within the ballet world after the beloved-but-canceled Bunheads.

“Look, my parents taught me very early to never let things go, and I am my parents’ child,” Sherman-Palladino told Vanity Fair in a recent interview. “Bunheads gave us a little taste of the...

‘Étoile’ Trailer: Charlotte Gainsbourg and Luke Kirby Swap Ballerinas in Francophile Dramedy
Image
The international microcosm of elite ballet is now getting its own fictionalized drama. “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino write, direct, and executive produce Prime Video series “Étoile” about rival dance companies swapping their top dancers as part of a marketing campaign.

Charlotte Gainsbourg leads the series as Geneviève, the interim general director of l’Opera Francais and Le Ballet National, who devises a plan with Jack (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” Emmy winner Luke Kirby), the executive director of the Metropolitan Ballet Theater, to trade their ballerinas for one year. While the series is not based on the actual dancer swap between Paris and New York City in 2009, it’s proof that sometimes real life, especially in the dance world, is stranger than fiction. (Co-creator Palladino told Vanity Fair that it was instead Frederick Wiseman’s documentary “La Danse: The Paris Opera Ballet” that inspired “Étoile.

Bunheads explored themes of growing up and finding one's place in the world. It took its characters seriously, giving them sharp dialogue and interesting arcs.It only ran for 18 episodes in 2012 on ABC Family before it was canceled due to poor ratings.
