Friday Night Lights is all set to return with clear eyes, full hearts, and no chance of losing as Peacock has reportedly been commissioned a reboot for the sports drama series. The show, created by Peter Berg, who also directed the movie version of the original book back in 2004, focused on the Dillon Panthers football team and the journeys of its players.
The show was well-received upon release and was even nominated for Emmys, including for Outstanding Actor, Writing, and Casting, all of which it won. Chandler won the Emmy in 2011 while Connie Britton, who played Tami Taylor, was also nominated. The reboot has been in the making since 2024, with Peacock outbidding Netflix for streaming rights.

Combat and football are rich territories for Peter Berg, the director of American Primeval. Berg’s Film 44 has renewed its creative partnership with Netflix to produce and direct live-action films and series, and their current collaboration is a feature adaptation of Buzz Bissinger’s instant New York Times bestseller The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II. Bissinger is also the author of Friday Night Lights, which Berg adapted for film in 2003 and developed for TV in 2006.
Filming on The Mosquito Bowl begins this month in Queensland, Australia, as announced jointly by Netflix and Screen Queensland, the Australian government-owned agency that invests in locally made films, series, and digital games.
“I’m thrilled to be in Queensland filming The Mosquito Bowl with some of the best crews in the world. The landscapes here are cinematic gold — perfect for bringing this story to life,” Berg...

Based on a 1990 novel of the same name by H. G. "Buzz" Bissinger and a 2004 film adaptation of said novel, Peter Berg's series "Friday Night Lights" is, ostensibly, about a scrappy Texas football team who overcome the odds after losing its star player to a traumatic injury right out of the gate. It's actually about the people living in Dillon, Texas, and the football of it all is simply a way to bring all the characters together. With Kyle Chandler as the unflappable and stern but big-hearted Coach Eric Taylor — whose loyal and loving wife Tami Taylor (Connie Britton) by his side along the way — the series became a massive critical success, despite the fact that it never drew a humongous audience during its original run, particularly after its second season was affected by the 2007-08 writer's strike.

As excitement builds around the upcoming Friday Night Lights reboot, fans have been speculating whether any of the beloved original cast members will return to the new series. And the show’s creator, Peter Berg, who brought the heartfelt Texas football drama to life, recently addressed these hopes.
While he’s not opposed to familiar faces making a comeback, Berg made it clear that their return hinges on one key condition: that they won’t be getting the spotlight in the reboot, as he is focused on reinventing the series.

How many times have you walked out of a movie and exclaimed, "That was great, but what it really needs is to be a television show!" Your answer, hopefully, is never. This is no shade on the home-viewing medium, but merely an acknowledgment that what you loved about said movie is unlikely to be replicable as a TV series. There are exceptions. Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau killed it as Felix and Oscar in Gene Saks' film of "The Odd Couple," but Tony Randall and Jack Klugman quickly made those roles their own on the hit ABC sitcom. Peter Berg crafted a big-screen American classic out of Buzz Bissinger's "Friday Night Lights," but the five-season series proved to be a deeper, more resonant experience. And who knew the boys club counterculture comedy of Robert Altman's "M*A*S*H" could lay the groundwork for a long-running sitcom that...

Late last year, fans ofthe acclaimed high school football series, Friday Night Lights, roared and cheered upon receiving the news that a long-anticipated reboot of the classic sports series was in the works. However, save for old cast members teasing their interest in returning for the reboot, little has been revealed since that official announcement. It is, however, billed to tell a new story with a new team of characters, but just how the reboot intends to build on the legacy of the original remains to be seen. The reboot is in safe hands, bringing back the former creative team, including Peter Berg, who has now elaborated on what to expect from the upcoming series.
The undying appeal of sports ensures its relevance will endure for generations to come, and with the reboot, Berg aims to explore how the landscape has evolved. He has shared that the new version will...

Last year it was announced that an updated version of the classic football series Friday Night Lights was coming to Peacock, but there's been little word on the project since then. Developed by Peter Berg, who based the series on his own hit movie, we now have an update from the creator himself, and for fans worried that it might just be a rehash of what came before, it's nothing but good news.
Speaking with Esquire about a number of topics, Berg's 2004 film and subsequent TV series were brought up. Inspired by the 1990 novel by H. G. Bissinger, Friday Night Lights became must-see TV back in the mid to late 2000s, as viewers couldn't get enough of coach Eric Taylor and his Dillon Panthers. Lasting for five seasons, the series is still remembered fondly today, which is why people were cautious when they heard about the new version coming to Peacock.

He-Man and Nosferatu walk into a bar. No, that can’t be right, but it kind of is. Today, Deadline reported that Nicholas Galitzine (Masters of the Universe) and Bill Skarsgård (Nosferatu) will star in Netflix’s upcoming film, Mosquito Bowl. The title is the first feature-length production to come from Peter Berg’s deal with the streamer, following the director’s uber-successful breakaway historical drama, American Primeval, which toppled viewership charts earlier this year. Along with directing, Berg also co-penned the adaptation with Mark L. Smith, which was first told through the New York Times bestseller, The Mosquito Bowl: A Game of Life and Death in World War II, by Buzz Bissinger.
Berg has never been one to stay away from football, and Mosquito Bowl will be no different. The film will pick up following the harrowing attack on Pearl Harbor, which launched the United States into the middle of WWII.

One of Netflix's biggest hit original series in recent years is "Outer Banks," which premiered in 2020 and ran for five seasons. Set in the scenic beach towns of North Carolina, the series blended coming-of-age drama, along with romance and action, elevated by its young, charismatic main cast. "Outer Banks" reinvigorated teen dramas and thrillers, but the genre has been a television staple for decades. With that in mind, there are countless shows like "Outer Banks" for fans looking to find the series' effective soap operatic stakes elsewhere.
From shows set in other picturesque locations around the country or featuring cool, stylish characters in a cycle of love and betrayal, there are plenty of teen dramas to watch. What links these series are young, impossibly beautiful main characters, often thrust into melodramatic storylines that grow increasingly ludicrous. For fans of the genre, they wouldn't have these teen and young adult shows any other way.

Peacock's Friday Night Lights reboot just lost a major key ingredient. Connie Britton, who appeared in both the movie and series inspired by the eponymous 1990 novel by H. G. Bissinger, has just ruled out making an appearance in the upcoming series reboot.
While speaking with Parade, Britton revealed that the Friday Night Lights reboot was "barely on her radar," although she expressed hope that the new cast will find a "sense of discovery there in terms of what they’re committing to and trying to accomplish." The actor played a similar role in both Friday Night Lights projects, appearing as the wife of a high school football coach opposite Billy Bob Thornton in the 2004 movie and Kyle Chandler in the 2006 series.

Connie Britton is not expected to be part of Peacock’s reboot of Friday Night Lights.
Deadline reported in December that the streamer had landed the reboot of the football series, in which Britton played Tami Taylor for the TV adaptation of the H.G. Bissinger 1990 novel.
In a new interview with Parade, Britton said the reboot is “barely on her radar,” but she shared her hopes for the new cast to find a “sense of discovery there in terms of what they’re committing to and trying to accomplish.”
Reflecting on her time on the drama series, Britton said she almost didn’t take on the role after having a small part in the 2004 movie directed by Peter Berg.

Peacock is planning a reboot of Friday Night Lights, but do we need a new version of the acclaimed show?
Reboots are all the rage in Hollywood; everyone knows that. TV shows just can't get enough as we've got Dexter: Original Sin, a new version of Suits, and more in the works. So it's not too shocking that Peacock has announced plans for a new take on Friday Night Lights.
Per TV Line, the project comes from the original shows' executive producers Jason Katims, Peter Berg, and Brian Grazer. The show is intended to be a true reboot of the original series with new characters and perhaps setting, with the logline hinting it's a tale of how the football team helps a small Texas town deal with tragedy.

It had a two-season run on NBC and then moved to DirecTV’s 101 Network for three more. The show had a low viewership compared to other dramas, but it has gained plenty of fans over the years since its release.
Now, a new version is coming, and here is what you need to know.

Set up at Peacock, original Fnl showrunner and executive producer Jason Katims will guide the new take in the same capacity. Peter Berg, director of the 2004 film based on H.G. Friday Night Lights is getting the reboot treatment, and Deadline reports that Peacock has scooped up the project after a competitive bidding war with Netflix.
This new iteration will “be set following a devastating hurricane, when a rag tag high school football team and their damaged, interim coach make an unlikely bid for a Texas High School State Championship and become a beacon of light for their town.“
The franchise is based on the non-fiction novel Friday Night Lights: A Town, A Team and a Dream by H.G. Bissinger. Peter Berg directed a feature film based on the novel in 2004, which starred Billy Bob Thornton, Lucas Black, Derek Luke, Garrett Hedlund, Jay Hernandez, and more. Two years later, Berg developed the acclaimed TV series of the same name. There are sports dramas, and then there’s Friday Night Lights.
While All American and other series have explored the heightened drama that unfolds on the gridiron and in the locker room, no show in modern history has consistently done so with as much heart as Fnl.
ESPN columnist Bill Simmons once hailed it as “the greatest sports-related show ever made.” Many critics would add that the contest is not a particularly close one.

Last month, Variety reported that Universal was developing a reboot of the beloved series, which ran from 2006-2011.
Now, the news has been confirmed, and the spinoff has been picked up by Peacock.
Surely some fans are excited about the prospect of returning to the world of Texas high school football.
But the prevailing mood at the moment is one of utter confusion.
And the question on the minds of many Fnl devotees is simply: Why?...

If there’s something that unites the entire globe, it’s a solid, heartfelt sports-based movie. Toss in its origin being based inside the pages of a beloved book, and baby, you’ve got an absolute hit on your hands. When H.G. Bissinger penned his 1990 book, Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream, it’s hard to say whether he realized it would become such a sensation on both the big and small screen. But - guess what? It did. Based on a true story (although heavily dramatized), Friday Night Lights follows the underdog tale of the 1988 Permian High School Panthers football team, who are on a collision course with greatness as they put their all into making it into the state championship. With troubles at home, in school, and on the team, the group of young men must rise above it all if they want to...

Friday Night Lights is based on a true story, but it's one that traveled through layers of adaptation. The real-life Permian Panthers, and the surrounding town of Odessa, were a major inspiration for the critically acclaimed NBC series and its setting of Dillon, Texas. However, the series dramatically altered much of the real-life town and its story, using it as inspiration instead of directly retelling events.

It chronicled the Panthers' 1988 season and is commonly listed as one of the best written about sports. Bissinger integrated himself into Odessa and spent a year there, allowing...

"Friday Night Lights" holds a unique spot in America's collective pop cultural memory. Those who haven't seen the show (which is based loosely on H.G. Bissinger's book of the same name) typically don't seem to be in a hurry to watch it, even though the drama is consistently included in rankings of the best TV shows of all time. It doesn't matter that "Friday Night Lights" won 3 Emmys, that it features great performances from stars like Connie Britton, Jesse Plemons, and Michael B. Jordan, or that it includes an incredible episode written by the future creator of "Interview with the Vampire." It is, to many of the people who haven't seen it, just a show about football.
Except it's not. Fans of the Texas-set show will tell you that though the sport is technically at the center of the series, it's about pretty much everything but football, including but not limited to: parenting,...

“Accepting death isn’t surrender. Flowers are only flowers because they fall.”
This is Toda Mariko in the penultimate episode of Shōgun, FX’s epic adaptation of James Clavell’s novel about a civil war in feudal Japan. Mariko says this because (spoiler alert) she knows that she is the flower who is about to fall, not only accepting her impending demise, but welcoming it.
But the people who made Shōgun don’t seem as willing to accept the series’ death. Though its 10 episodes covered the entirety of Clavell’s book,...

If you grew up in Texas, you know how important high school football is. If Sunday is for God and church, then Fridays are for your local varsity football team under the lights. So what do you do when something becomes almost as important as religion? Well, you make a movie about it. Friday Night Lights is a cinematic portrayal of the cult of football and how it affects the young men who play the game, their coaches, and the small towns in which they are at the center. But you better dot your "I"s and cross your "T"s, because if you misrepresent the sport of football in the Lone Star State, (especially if you aren't from Texas) there are hordes of Texans ready and willing to release the hounds of hell on you. Just ask Buzz Bissinger, who hails from New York City and was writing for the Philadelphia Enquirer.
