‘Highest 2 Lowest’ Trailer: Denzel Washington and Spike Lee Reunite
Image
Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Spike Lee mark their fifth collaboration with A24’s Highest 2 Lowest. A reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low, the crime thriller’s official trailer sets up a battle between Denzel Washington and A$AP Rocky.

The film also stars Oscar nominee Jeffrey Wright (American Fiction) and Ilfenesh Hadera (Godfather of Harlem).

“When a titan music mogul (Washington), widely known as having the ‘best ears in the business,’ is targeted with a ransom plot, he is jammed up in a life-or-death moral dilemma,” reads A24’s synopsis.

Denzel Washington and Spike Lee’s successful collaboration began with Mo’ Better Blues in 1990. 1992’s Malcolm X came next, followed by He Got Game in 1998 and 2006’s Inside Man. Their fifth collaboration will open in theaters on August 15, 2025, followed by a streaming debut on Apple TV+ on September 5.

‘Highest 2 Lowest’ trailer: Denzel Washington is targeted with a ransom plot in his latest collaboration with Spike Lee
Image
On Monday, Apple Original Films and A24 released the official trailer for Highest 2 Lowest, the upcoming crime thriller directed by Spike Lee and starring Denzel Washington. The film has already sparked awards buzz following its debut at the Cannes Film Festival and marks the fifth collaboration between Washington and Lee—their first in nearly two decades.

Who’S In The Cast

Highest 2 Lowest stars two-time Oscar winner Washington as a powerful New York music mogul whose son, played by Aubrey Joseph, is kidnapped and held for ransom. “Somebody’s got our son,” Washington’s character, David King, says in the trailer. The cast also includes Ilfenesh Hadera as Lomg’s wife, as well as Jeffrey Wright and A$AP Rocky, who not only appears in the film but also contributes new original music to the soundtrack.

The Backstory

‘Highest 2 Lowest’ Trailer: Denzel Washington & A$AP Rocky Are In A City-Wide Battle In The Latest Joint From Spike Lee
Image
Apple and A24 today unveiled the first official trailer for Highest 2 Lowest, their Kurosawa-inspired crime thriller reuniting Spike Lee and Denzel Washington for the first time since Inside Man back in 2006.

The film will hit theaters on August 15 before arriving on Apple TV+ on September 5. The story is a modern reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic High and Low, which was itself based on the novel King’s Ransom by Ed McBain. While the original thriller follows a shoe company exec who becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom, the new film, set in contemporary NYC, sees a music mogul played by Washington contend with a similar plot.

Also starring A$AP Rocky, as well as Jeffrey Wright, Ilfenesh Hadera, Dean Winters, John Douglas Thompson, and Ice Spice, Highest 2 Lowest debuted out of competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival.

'The Social Network Part II' Eyes a 'Succession' Star To Replace Jesse Eisenberg
Image
While Aaron Sorkin is returning to the world of Facebook for a sequel to The Social Network, the star of that acclaimed film will not be accompanying him. Succession's Jeremy Strong is circling the lead role of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, stepping in for Jesse Eisenberg. There is no indication whether Eisenberg turned the project down, or if the decision was made by the filmmakers.

Deadline reports that Strong is the top choice to play the Meta CEO, who has been embroiled in controversy over the actions of his flagship social media platform since before the first Social Network hit theaters in 2010. However, no formal offer has yet been made to Strong. The film, which is said to be more of a spiritual follow-up than a conventional sequel, is also said to be eyeing Anora's Mikey Madison and The Bear's Jeremy Allen White for unspecified roles in the film.

Jeremy Strong Eyed to Play Mark Zuckerberg in Aaron Sorkin’s ‘Social Network’ Sequel
Image
Academy Award nominee Jeremy Strong is being eyed to star as Facebook CEO and founder Mark Zuckerberg in Aaron Sorkin’s “The Social Network Part II,” a follow-up to his Academy Award-winning and box office hit film “The Social Network” at Sony Pictures.

Additionally, Jeremy Allen White and recent Academy Award winner Mikey Madison are also circling roles in the project.

However, insiders caution this is all still in early stages and no formal offers have been made to any of the above trio. According to The Hollywood Reporter, which first reported the news, Strong is the top choice to play Zuckerberg, replacing Jesse Eisenberg who played the Facebook CEO in the 2010 movie and passed on reprising the role.

Sorkin’s original screenplay explores the story behind the Wall Street Journal’s “The Facebook Files,” an explosive series of articles published in October 2021 that exposed the inner workings of — and...

Jeremy Strong Front-Runner To Play Mark Zuckerberg In ‘The Social Network Part II’
Image
Jeremy Strong is in line for a role in the upcoming The Social Network Part II, and sources say he is the top choice to play Meta CEO and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. Sources say no formal offer has been presented but that he is the top choice.

Deadline first reported last night that Jeremy Allen White and Mikey Madison are top choices to star in the follow-up movie, with Aaron Sorkin writing and directing.

Sony and reps for Strong had no comment.

Deadline first reported in June that Sorkin would direct and pen a sequel after years of figuring out what angle he wanted to pursue telling the next chapter in the Facebook story. The new film project is in development with Todd Black, Peter Rice, Sorkin and Stuart Besser producing. In the first film, Zuckerberg was played by Jesse Eisenberg, who went on to receive an Oscar nomination for the role.

Masters Of The Universe Star Alison Brie Suggests Live-Action Movie May Be Just As Campy As '80s Cartoon
Image
Last year, we got word that Amazon MGM and Mattel's live-action Masters of the Universe reboot had added another major cast member, with Alison Brie set to take on the role of the villainous Evil-Lyn.

As her name suggests, Evil-Lyn is a wicked and powerful sorceress who serves as Skeletor's second-in-command. Lyn was played by Meg Foster in the previous live-action movie, and was voiced by Game of Thrones alum Lena Headey in Netflix's Masters of the Universe: Revelation animated series, which added some new dimensions to the character.

Brie has some experience playing a cartoonishly evil villain thanks to her Glow character's wrestling persona, Zoya "the Destroya."

While promoting her new horror movie, Together, during an interview with Collider, Brie was asked about the perception that this take on Motu would be more serious in tone than the classic '80s animated series, and responded with the following.

Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White Circling Lead Roles in Aaron Sorkin’s ‘Social Network’ Sequel
Image
Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White are circling the lead roles for Aaron Sorkin’s sequel to the 2010 Oscar winner “The Social Network,” according to sources with knowledge of the project.

While no offers have been made, Sorkin has met with both Madison and White about the project. The film is still very much in the development stage and has yet to receive the green light from Sony.

Sony declined to comment on the casting.

Sorkin is set to write and direct the follow-up to David Fincher’s 2010 original. While that film followed the creation of the ubiquitous social media platform and the rise of its boy-genius founder Mark Zuckerberg, the sequel is based on “The Facebook Files” from Jeff Horwitz. Published by the Wall Street Journal in 2021, the series of articles exposed Facebook for its harmful effects on teens and its knowing proliferation of misinformation, which contributed to acts of political violence.

Earlier this week, Amazon MGM unveiled the official logo for the live-action Masters of the Universe movie - which also included a new version of the '80s animated series' theme - in advance of the studio's Sdcc presentation, and some photos from the Con's Motu display have now been shared online.

There's no sign of any characters from the movie, unfortunately, but we do have a first look at He-Man's (Nicholas Galitzine) Power Sword, aka the Sword of Grayskull, and Skeletor's (Jared Leto) signature ram's-head Havoc Staff.

The sword is an important part of Motu lore, and was given to Prince Adam by the Sorceress to use as a means of transforming into Eternia's muscle-bound protector. When Adam holds aloft his magic sword and says... you know the rest!

Aaron Sorkin Breaks His Promise for ‘The Social Network 2’ That Keeps David Fincher’s Trend Alive
Image
The announcement of The Social Network 2 has reasonably sparked excitement among fans, especially with original screenwriter Aaron Sorkin involved, arguably one of the most revered writers working today. However, what’s surprising about the sequel is that Sorkin, in addition to penning the screenplay, will be taking the director’s chair.

This is a departure from the screenwriter’s earlier stance on the potential sequel, as he previously stressed that The Social Network 2 without David Fincher was out of the equation.

Aaron Sorkin reverses course with ‘The Social Network 2’ without David Fincher

While Aaron Sorkin’s Oscar-winning screenplay for the 2010 drama was undoubtedly central to The Social Network‘s success, it’s David Fincher‘s direction that elevates the movie from just another run-of-the-mill biopic.

Aaron Sorkin is going back into the world of Facebook. Sorkin and Sony Pictures are in development on “The Social Network Part II,” a follow-up film to the 2010 gem “The Social Network” about the founding of Facebook, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire.

For now, the film is only in development, but Sorkin has already written the screenplay for the follow-up, and Sony has also tapped him to direct after David Fincher directed the first film.

Crucially, no cast is set on the project, and the film is being described as a follow-up rather than a sequel, so it’s unclear if Sorkin would look to again tap stars Jesse Eisenberg as Mark Zuckerberg, Andrew Garfield, or others.

This time, Sorkin is working from the Wall Street Journal’s series of articles called “The Facebook Files” from 2021, which exposed the inner workings of the social media giant...

Aaron Sorkin to Write and Direct ‘The Social Network Part II’ at Sony
Image
Aaron Sorkin is developing “The Social Network Part II,” a follow-up to his Academy Award-winning and box office hit film “The Social Network” at Sony Pictures, TheWrap has learned. He has written the screenplay and will direct.

Sorkin’s original screenplay explores the story behind the Wall Street Journal’s “The Facebook Files,” an explosive series of articles published in October 2021 that exposed the inner workings of — and multiple harms caused by — the world’s largest social network.

“The Social Network Part II” is in development with Todd Black, Peter Rice, Sorkin and Stuart Besser producing. The film currently has no cast.

Released in 2010 by Sony Pictures, “The Social Network” was both a hit with audiences and critics after earning $226 million globally. Nominated for eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, the film won three, including Best Adapted Screenplay for Sorkin.

In her review of the film for TheWrap, Leah Rozen...

Image
Exclusive: After teasing a potential sequel to his Oscar-winning drama The Social Network for years, Aaron Sorkin looks to have found an angle to tackle for his follow-up film. Sources tell Deadline that Sorkin has been set to direct The Social Network Part II for Sony Pictures. Insiders say that while it’s being called part two, it’s not a straight sequel but rather a follow-up to the original movie that explored the origins of what would become the world’s biggest social media platform.

The new film project is in development with Todd Black, Peter Rice, Sorkin and Stuart Besser producing.

Sorkin’s original screenplay for the new movie explores the story behind the Wall Street Journal‘s The Facebook Files by Jeff Horowitz, an explosive series of articles published in October 2021 that exposed the inner workings of — and multiple harms caused by — the world’s largest social network.

He-man Actor Dolph Lundgren Teases "Secret" Role In New Masters Of The Universe Movie
Image
The new live-action Masters of the Universe movie from Amazon MGM Studios recently wrapped principal photography, with several main and supporting cast members sharing behind-the-scenes photos featuring teasing glimpses of their respective costumes.

This latest take on the classic animated series/toy line features a sprawling cast and a lot of characters (some have yet to be announced), and it sounds like we may also get an appearance from the original live-action He-Man, Dolph Lundgren.

Speculation that Lundgren, who played Eternia's muscle-bound protector in the much-maligned 1987 movie, might be set to make a cameo in the reboot first began when the actor shared some social media posts mentioning a "secret" project he was working on in London early on during production, and the '80s action star was asked about the rumors during an interview with Mensjournal.com.

"It's a bit of a secret, but I can't say much,...

The Riverdale star took to Instagram to post several photos from her time working on the project, and appears in one shot in her Teela outfit as she chows down on a cheeseburger.

"That’s a wrap on Motu," Mendes writes. "Getting to play Teela has been one of the most exciting and challenging experiences of my career. Image
“Masters of the Universe” star Nicholas Galitzine took to Instagram Sunday to reveal that the live-action adaptation of the 1983 animated series from Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films has officially wrapped production.

“Well, that’s a wrap on ‘Masters of the Universe,'” Galitzine wrote. “It has been an honour shouldering the responsibility of playing Adam and He-Man. Masters Of The Universe Actor Sam C. Wilson Shares Teasing Glimpse Of His Trap Jaw Look
Image
Though we've yet to see anything particularly revealing so far, Masters of the Universe supporting cast members have been sharing behind-the-scenes photos from their time working on the live-action adaptation to social media, and we now have a teasing first glimpse of Sam C. Wilson as one of He-Man's most recognizable foes, Trap Jaw.

As you can see, Wilson only posted a close-up shot of his eye, but the image does confirm that Skeletor's "Wizard of Weapons" will retain his green-skinned face (whether he'll also have the blue body remains to be seen) from the original animated series.

Trap Jaw, or Trapjaw as he was known in the subsequent animated shows, was a criminal named Kronis who arrived to Eternia from another dimension. The 2002 animated series ret-conned his origin slightly to make him an enemy of Skeletor who lost his jaw and arm in a battle with the villain...

Amazon's Masters of the Universe Live-Action Gets Exciting Filming Update 1 Year Before Release
Image
The iconic cartoon series and iconic toy line Masters of the Universe is getting a new live-action movie. The film was previously adapted into a live-action film in the 1980s, but will get a new one in 2026.

Masters of the Universe will star Nicholas Galitzine in the leading role as He-Man, and it comes from Amazon MGM Studios. The upcoming adaptation is set to tell the origin story, which can set it up for future installments. One year ahead of the film's release in theaters on June 5, 2026, Masters of the Universe has wrapped filming in the UK, The Knowledge Online reported.

Production on the live-action film began on January 6, 2025. Since filming kicked off in the UK, fans have been treated to several photos from the set. Some of them showed Nicholas Galitzine's blonde hair for He-Man, teased that (at least a part of) the story is set on Earth, and...

Masters Of The Universe: Moss Man Actor Stephen Adentan Shares BTS Glimpse Of His Practical Costume
Image
The upcoming live-action Masters of the Universe movie from Mattel and Amazon MGM Studios is set to feature a lot of characters (it would probably take less time to list the heroes and villains that won't appear) from the original animated series, toy line, and various comic book runs, including a few fairly obscure allies of He-Man.

Stephen Adentan is set to play Moss Man, and has now taken to social media to announce that he has finished filming his scenes while also sharing a BTS look at the practical costume he'll don as Eternia's guardian of the natural world.

Moss Man only made two appearances in the '80s cartoon as a spy who could camouflage himself by transforming into a plant, but his origins were retconned in the comics and later animated shows, reimagining the character as one of the most powerful beings in Eternia.

He-Man/Prince Adam...

Masters Of The Universe Star Nicholas Galitzine Teases His He-Man Physique And Costume (From Behind A Curtain)
Image
The live-action Masters of the Universe movie is now filming at Wookey Hole in Somerset after recently finishing up at the Wells Cathedral, and star Nicholas Galitzine has shared some photos and video clips from the massive underground cave system that is believed to be doubling for the caves of Eternia.

In one brief clip, the Cinderella actor can be seen posing from behind a curtain in his He-Man costume. He is completely obscured, but the silhouette does reveal one detail about the outfit.

Not too surprisingly, it seems this next big-screen take on the muscle-bound hero will be ditching the furry loincloth the character wore in the original animated series for a leather tunic or Pteruges.

We have seen Galitzine as Prince Adam (alongside Camila Mendes as Teela) in set photos, but aside from a partial reveal via the initial production still (see above), we have yet to get...

Ryan Coogler Sets the Record Straight on Denzel Washington's Involvement in 'Black Panther 3
Image
Ryan Coogler’s original vampire horror film hit theaters just over a month ago, and it has been an exhilarating ride since. Sinners has found tremendous success at the box office — as it’s earned over $250 million domestically and nearly $350 million globally — and is well-received by both critics and audiences. Coogler is no stranger to his movies excelling on the global stage as the performances of the Chadwick Boseman-led Black Panther and the second movie, Wakanda Forever, have proven. Coogler and the MCU are intent on returning to the world of Wakanda with the upcoming Black Panther 3, and it would seem that rumors of a heavyweight casting are true after all.

Speaking to NBA legend Carmelo Anthony on the 7Pm in Brooklyn podcast, Coogler revealed that acting great, Denzel Washington, will in fact be part of Black Panther 3, should that sequel ever happen. The Equalizeractor had previously let it...

Masters Of The Universe Merch May Reveal First Look At Nicholas Galitzine's He-Man Character Design
Image
Filming on the live-action Masters of the Universe movie is still taking place in London, and while we have seen quite a few set photos of star Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam, we have yet to see him in full He-Man mode.

Some photos of Mattel's display at the recent Licensing Expo have now been shared online, and the statue might just give is our first look at the character design for Galitzine's take on Eternia's muscle-bound protector, who Adam transforms into when he holds aloft his magic sword and says... you know the rest!

Though it's difficult to make out the statue's facial features, If you look closely at the base, you'll notice that it bears the movie's title treatment. This would obviously indicate that this is official tie-in merch, and not based on any previous animated or live-action incarnation of the character.

Hopefully, a clearer look...

'Highest 2 Lowest' Sets a New Rotten Tomatoes Record for Denzel Washington and Spike Lee
Image
Denzel Washingtonand Spike Lee have teamed up once again for their latest joint, and it is one that the critics are seemingly "high" on. The A24 and Apple Original Film Highest 2 Lowest has become the duo's highest-rated film so far on Rotten Tomatoes, surpassing all the other Washington-Lee projects that the pair have become famous for. It should mark the high point of the men's collaborative effort, almost two decades after they last worked together.

As of this article's publication, Highest 2 Lowest currently has a critic's score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 12 professional reviews. No audience score is currently listed, though this is likely to change this summer when the film debuts theatrically (and eventually on Apple TV+). The film's rating is unsurprising given its positive reviews, with Collider's Therese Lacson sayingHighest 2 Lowest is a "vibrant, loud, and full of life" film that is a "delight to watch.

Spike Lee Says ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ Is Potentially His Last Collaboration With Denzel Washington: “This Is It—Five”
Image
“The last time I was in this room, I was apologizing for the f*ck-up,” filmmaker Spike Lee joked this morning as he walked into the press conference room in Cannes.

The legendary New York filmmaker was referring to 2021, when he served as the Cannes jury president and prematurely announced Titane as the Palme d’Or winner during the closing-night ceremony.

Lee is back here in Cannes with his latest feature, Highest 2 Lowest, a modern “reinterpretation” of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 classic High and Low, which was itself based on the novel King’s Ransom by Ed McBain. While the original follows a shoe company exec who becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom, the new film, set in contemporary New York City, sees a music mogul played by Denzel Washington contend with a similar plot.

From Apple and A24, the...

Spike Lee’s Denzel Washington Pic ‘Highest 2 Lowest’ Scores Six-Minute Ovation After Cannes Premiere
Image
Spike Lee returned to the Cannes Film Festival Official Selection tonight with his latest feature, Highest 2 Lowest, which is running in the Out of Competition strand. Starring Denzel Washington, Jeffrey Wright, A$AP Rocky and Ilfenesh Hadera, the Akira Kurosawa-inspired crime thriller garnered a six-minute ovation at its world premiere.

Highest 2 Lowest is a modern reinterpretation of Kurosawa’s 1963 classic High and Low, which was itself based on the novel King’s Ransom by Ed McBain. While the original follows a shoe company exec who becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom, the new film, set in contemporary New York City, sees a music mogul played by Washington contend with a similar plot.

‘Highest 2 Lowest’ Review: Denzel Washington Finds A Great Role And A$AP Rocky Finds A New Career In Spike Lee’s Entertaining Kidnap Drama – Cannes Film Festival
Image
Yet again a filmmaker has gone to the throne of Japanese giant Akira Kurosawa for inspiration. Among the lauded director’s films Hollywood has turned into English-language adaptations are Seven Samurai, which became The Magnificent Seven twice (including once with Denzel Washington); Rashomon, which became Paul Newman’s The Outrage; Ikiru, remade a few years ago as Living; Yojimbo, which led to an uncredited inspiration for A Fistful of Dollars; and 1958’s Hidden Fortress, unquestionably an inspiration for George Lucas and Star Wars.

Now chalk up another one with Spike Lee’s new take on Kurosawa’s 1963 drama High and Low, in which Toshiro Mifune played a shoemaker executive who is torn between paying the ransom to his chauffeur’s son’s kidnapper after the criminal nabbed him by mistake instead of the executive’s son, who was safe. It becomes a moral dilemma, especially as the exec really needs...
