It’s no secret that The Umbrella Academy has honed the art of balancing emotion with absurdity. Season 4 of Netflix’s sci-fi mystery dramedy garnered rather polarizing reviews for its alleged disappointing ending. But I’m still willing to defend the show with everything that I have for its convincing alternate timelines, dysfunctional sibling dynamics, and time travel.
Amid all the mayhem, though, there was one storyline I just could not stomach: the deeply disturbing romantic pairing of Five and Lila. For a show that rarely ever misses a beat, this unsettling arc stood out like a sore thumb. While we have previously endured Reginald and Kalus’ twisted love-hate relationship, this one feels much worse. Let’s break down what made this pairing seem so out of place.

Making a name for yourself in WWE isn’t easy. Many wrestlers start strong but later struggle to stay relevant and fade from the spotlight. Some take advantage of their opportunities, building successful careers and becoming superstars. In contrast, others can’t keep up the momentum and end up being remembered for just one big match.
Over the years, numerous highly talented WWE stars have struggled to leave a lasting impact, despite their generational skills. In many cases, devastating injuries have played a major role in their downfall. Another significant factor that has derailed the careers of countless wrestlers in the promotion is the use of steroids, which has led to irreparable consequences for many.

For democracy and giant robots! After unleashing a trailer for the second season of The Last of Us, Sony used their time at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) to announce feature film adaptations for two of its hottest gaming properties, Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2.
Speaking about the projects at the annual technology showcase, Asad Qizilbash, Head of Playstation Productions, said, “Looking ahead as to what might come next, I’m excited to announce we are working with Sony Pictures on developing a film adaptation of our amazingly popular PlayStation game Helldivers 2.” Qizilbash included plans for an adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn and a Ghost of Tsushima anime called Ghost of Tsushima: Legends in his address.
Horizon Zero Dawn takes place in a far-flung future where colossal machines roam and rule the Earth, and pockets of humanity survive in unique tribes among the lush, overgrown ruins of our long-lost civilization.

It has been a great week for video game fans, as a whole host of PlayStation favorites have just been given new live-action and animated adaptations. But, the fun doesn't stop there. On top of Season 2 of the Last of Us, the Ghost of Tsushima anime, and the live-action Helldivers film, one of PlayStation's most beloved new sci-fi franchises is getting the big-screen treatment. Horizon Zero Dawn will finally receive a live-action movie.
The new project was unveiled by the head of PlayStation Products, Asad Qizilbash, as CES 2025 in Las vegas, Nevada (via IGN). The new movie will see PlayStation Studios partner with Columbia Pictures for a second time, following the success of 2022's Uncharted (starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg). "Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions are at the early stages of developing a film adaptation of the award-winning Horizon Zero Dawn," Qizilbash said on stage during PlayStation Studios' presentation.

A feature film based on the acclaimed Sony PlayStation video game “Horizon Zero Dawn” is in “early stages” of development as a joint project between Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions.
Asad Qizilbash, the head of PlayStation Productions, announced the news as part of Sony’s presentation Monday night at CES 2025.
If you’re not a gamer but the project still sounds familiar, it’s because “Horizon Zero Dawn” was previously announced — back in 2022 — as a Netflix series developed by “The Umbrella Academy” showrunner Steve Blackman in partnership with Michelle Lovretta (“Killjoys”). At some point since then however, the show was quietly shelved.
No reason for the shift from TV series to feature film was given during Qizilbash’s announcement, but it’s notable that in June of 2024, Rolling Stone published an exposé in which Blackman was accused of bullying and other toxic behavior by staff members. Blackman has denied all accusations.

We recently said bye-bye to the Brellies.
The hilariously dysfunctional Hargreeves superfamily bid farewell to the multiverse in The Umbrella Academy’sfinal episode. But luckily for us, the fun isn’t over yet.
While the series, created by showrunner Steve Blackman, recently concluded its apocalyptic adventures after four wild seasons, there are still some laughs left in this timeline.
A riotous Umbrella Academy blooper reel released at Geeked Week, Netflix’s epic fan event, proved that the actors’ on-set antics are just as zany as the superhero siblings’ hijinks.
Watch as David Castañeda (Diego) and Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison) flub their lines and utter some gobbledygook. Justin Min (Ben) can’t keep a straight face when he forgets a phrase or misses a mark alongside his fellow cast members.

The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman confirmed what exactly happened to Reginald and Abigail's home planet in a recent interview, as the show never explained it outright.
This was one of many elements of Season 4 that were never explained (to the frustration of several fans) but treated story-wise as though fans already knew the context or answers.
Others included why Ray left Allison, what happened to Sloane, what Ben was doing on the subway in the Season 3 post-credits scene, why some of the Hargreeves developed new powers after drinking the Marigold, and why Jennifer was in the squid.

This article contains spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 4.
For the past four seasons, The Umbrella Academy has repeatedly put its main characters through the same cycle: Uncover personal and family trauma, save the world, rinse and repeat. There was hope that the final season of the show might finally see the Hargreeves siblings find the happy ending they so desperately craved and deserved. But as much as the cheery demeanor of the series’ final sequence wants you to believe that this is the happiest ending these messy, complicated misfits could have hoped for, in reality, it’s a slap in the face to all that these characters have endured.
From their immaculate Marigold conception to their subsequent adoption and training by Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore), the Umbrella Academy has collectively been through an immense amount of trauma. When we first see them as adults in season 1, it’s clear...

During the season one finale of The Umbrella Academy, Viktor Hargreeves blew up the moon, causing a global apocalypse that thrust him and the rest of his superhero siblings into another timeline. But three seasons later, after multiple universe-altering hijinks alongside his super-powered family, the Netflix series’ final six episodes saw the man who once ended the world play a key role in helping save it.

Through four seasons of Netflix’s superhero series The Umbrella Academy, members of the dysfunctional Hargreeves crime-fighting family have lost and regained their powers multiple times. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg of the weirdness Luther, Diego, Allison, and company endure.
Amid all the bickering, time-traveling and universe-hopping, it can be easy to forget that The Umbrella Academy even had superpowers in the first place! Thankfully early seasons of the show and the comic source material from Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá provide a helpful reminder of what the Hargreeves are capable of.
What follows is a breakdown of every member of The Umbrella Academy’s (and Lila’s) power. The availability of those powers vary from season-to-season and sometimes they unlock a new dimension of said powers, but the fundamentals remain the same throughout.

In the world of X-Men, Wolverine might be the top dog, but other characters often played second fiddle—until Beau DeMayo came along. Under the Marvel Animation banner, he breathed new life into the X-Men franchise with X-Men ’97, pulling lesser-known heroes out of the shadows and giving them their moment in the spotlight.

But just as the show was gearing up for its big debut earlier this year, the creator-head writer was shown the door just days before the premiere. Fast forward to today, and DeMayo is finally speaking up. In a recent social media post, he shed light on why Marvel allegedly wiped his name off the credits for Season 2. According to him, it all started with Pride Month fan art he shared on Instagram.
But some Marvel fans won’t be buying into DeMayo’s claim.

“It’s like a big old scrapbook.”
Brellies! If you’ve just finished the last ever episode of The Umbrella Academy, then we know how you’re feeling.
While goodbyes are never easy, the Hargreeves’ hijinks will live in our hearts forever. Since you’re a superfan, we know you devoured those behind-the-scenes photos of the cast and crew that accompanied the very last end credits of the Steve Blackman series. “Everybody contributed them,” Robert Sheehan, who plays the psychedelic Klaus, tells Tudum. “I’ll be honest, maybe this makes me an egomaniac, but when the ones I contributed to the last little montage pop up, I go, ‘Ah!’ It’s lovely seeing them all. It’s like a big old scrapbook at the end.”

The fourth final season of The Umbrella Academy dropped on Netflix just the other week, and while fans definitely have some problems with the way the show goes out, I'm happy this offbeat series about a family of dysfunctional superheroes got to end on its own terms.
Well, that may be overstating the facts. While The Umbrella Academy got to put a bow on itself and end its story, the final season had fewer episodes than usual: six vs the usual 10. That meant some storylines had to get cut or compressed. To wit: in the third season of the show, Luther (Tom Hopper) fell in love with Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez), a member of the Sparrow Academy, which is basically the Umbrella Academy but from an alternate universe; the characters on this show are constantly dealing with stuff like that.
Anyway, Luther and Slaone ended up married, but the third season...

Warning: Major Spoilers Ahead for The Umbrella Academy season 4!
Lila and Five's romance in The Umbrella Academy season 4 is a shocking twist, but showrunner Steve Blackman justifies it due to the amount of time they spent together trapped in a time waypoint. The show's divisive decision stems from the rapid development of the romance in just one episode, and Lila's longstanding relationship with Five's brother Diego throughout the show. Due to the series' ending, the consequences of Lila and Five's relationship remain unexplored, making it unclear why the romance needed to happen when the show was ending the very next episode.
The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman has explained why season 4 contained a divisive storyline between Lila and Five, defending why it happened. During The Umbrella Academy season 4, episode 5, Lila and Five end up stranded for multiple years in a waypoint between time, forced to grow closer to each other...

The following contains spoilers for The Umbrella Academy Season 4, now streaming on Netflix.
The Umbrella Academy's fourth season has finally arrived, bringing the offbeat superhero show to a close. Unfortunately, it appears to be going out with less of a bang and more of a whimper. Fans have been quick to express their disappointment in the final season, with its audience score on Rotten Tomatoes currently sitting at 17 percent and plenty of passionate social media posts likening it to other infamous series finales, such as Game of Thrones and Supernatural. While Season 4 does have some enjoyable moments, there are several factors contributing to audiences' dissatisfaction with the finale.
Crafting a satisfying end to a much-loved series is an incredibly difficult task, and certain limitations may have been out of the creative team's control when making The Umbrella Academy Season 4. That said, several creative decisions aren't sitting well with the show's fanbase,...

The fourth and final season of the hit Netflix series “The Umbrella Academy” premiered on August 8th. Though it drew in millions of viewers within its first seven days, the season failed to reach the heights of past seasons on Netflix’s Top 10 charts.
According to viewership data from Netflix, season four gained 8.4 million views during its debut week, equaling 47.5 million hours watched. While these numbers represent a significant audience, they are lower than previous seasons. For comparison, season three attracted 124.5 million viewing hours in its first week after release earlier this year.
Several factors may have contributed to the dip in viewership. The sixth episode count was shorter than past ten-episode seasons, providing less overall content. Additionally, the August release coincided with the Summer Olympics, which occupied audiences’ attention away from streaming platforms.

The fourth and final season of Netflix’s high-profile comic-book series “The Umbrella Academy” had an underwhelming debut, failing to top Netflix’s Top 10 list in its first week of availability. To be clear it made the list at number 2, but it could not overcome the second week for “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder.”
Both of the series tallied a rounded 8.4 million views last week, which is low — but not unheard of — for top-ranking Netflix shows. It was the number 3 English-language series that reminds us Netflix was a bit of an afterthought streamer over these past few weeks.
“Simon Biles Rising: Season 1” ranked third for both of the past two weeks on Netflix, while Simone Biles herself was busy ranking first and second over on Peacock. The docuseries has spent four weeks on the Top 10, and even with the Olympics’ gymnastics competition in the rearview, it brought in another 3.7 million views.

The fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy has dropped on Netflix, and whatever you think about it, I'd like to extend congratulations to the cast and crew who poured their blood, sweat and tears into the show these past several years. If nothing else, there was nothing else quite like The Umbrella Academy on TV.
According to showrunner Steve Blackman, the show was always going to end with season 4. “When I started this thing, I sort of knew four seasons of the show,” he told the Hollywood Reporter back in 2022. “I have nothing passed that in my brain, but I’ve sort of kept to a trajectory. So, I have a really good sense of what season four would be, and it should be just as bonkers as the other seasons—what a challenge these superheroes, this family has being powerless.”

For four seasons, fans have been waiting for the multiple timeline–spanning mysteries in The Umbrella Academy to unravel.
Luckily, by the time we reach the end of the series, the timeline has finally aligned and we get some answers. Like, how did Ben (Justin H. Min) die? What is the Jennifer Incident? The Umbrella Academy wrapped up its final season in a wild way, though fans are a little bit miffed at one character not returning. Why were they Mia?
Caution: This article contains Spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 4.
We're talking about Sloane (Genesis Rodriguez), the Sparrow that Luther (Tom Hooper) falls in love with and marries in season 3. That season ends with Luther briefly dying only to be resurrected into this new world minus his super-strength and mutated body, but Sloane is not with him.
Given how important she is to Luther, Sloane’s absence this season is notable, so what happened?
Why isn't Sloane in The Umbrella Academy finale?
Speaking to TV Line, showrunner Steve Blackman explained he had a plan to use Sloane in season 4 but was held back by logistics. The season only had six episodes rather than the 10 episodes of the previous seasons, which sadly meant cutting out some plot points.

The Hargreeves family graced our screens for the final time in the finale to popular Netflix series The Umbrella Academy, which dropped to the streaming service on August 8, 2024. In its concluding episode, "End of the Beginning", the show concluded its fourth and final series in a gut-wrenching narrative that saw the siblings at their most vulnerable, wrapping up the shows five-year run at least, for now. Showrunner Steve Blackman has teased the potential for expanding the universe of The Umbrella Academy, with both the shows cast and the creator of the source material, Gerard Way, on board.

Although The Umbrella Academy ended tragically, David Castaeda is not ruling out hope for the last scenes featuring his character, Diego Hargreeves. Since this actor started right at the beginning, he has witnessed all the show's crests and troughs. Adapted from a comic series by Gerard Way, this superhero show revolves around a group of superheroes who were children years ago but now find it extremely difficult to handle all the hassles of being adults while saving the universe.
By the end of The Umbrella Academy's final season, it is revealed that all the Hargreaves children will eventually sacrifice themselves to save the universe from a myriad of impending apocalypses. Ben's original death in The Umbrella Academy was even a mystery to the cast. First introduced as a ghost following Robert Sheehan's Klaus, Justin H. After he was introduced in another timeline, Min played another version of Ben, who suffered a similar fate in The Umbrella Academy's season 4 ending. Season four begins back in the present, finally! But, it’s the wrong timeline, corrupted by an incomplete reset attempt by Reginald, and they’ve all lost their superpowers. The fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy was just released on Netflix on Thursday, Aug. 8, 2024. To celebrate the great Netflix original series based on Gerard Way’s comic book series of the same name, we're ranking all seven of the Hargreeves siblings from worst to best.
I thought this ranking would be easy. I have clear favorites, of course, but as I watched the final six episodes of The Umbrella Academy, I realized just how much I like and respect all of these characters. Even the siblings ranked lower on the list are terrific, well-rounded, and messy characters. That’s a testament to the source material, Steve Blackman and the show’s writers, and of course, the entire cast that brought these characters to life.
Let’s get the ranking started with Ben, the seventh-best of the Hargreeves siblings.
There are some mild spoilers for The Umbrella Academy season 4 ahead!

Note: There are spoilers for “The Umbrella Academy” Season 4 below.
“The Umbrella Academy” just signed off with its fourth and final season, and the Netflix series brought it all to an end with a happy reunion — of sorts. The series ends with a singular, happier timeline created thanks to the Hargreeves siblings’ sacrifice – and it’s full of familiar faces.
After the siblings realize that the marigold giving them their powers is also what’s causing the world to end repeatedly, they agree to let The Cleanse erase them from ever existing. This results in one unified, seemingly much better timeline.
The show ends with a pan around a park where we see a number of familiar faces from the series’ run; all living much better, safer lives. Showrunner Steve Blackman told TheWrap it was a lot of phone calls, but he ended up getting almost everyone he wanted for the scene.

The Umbrella Academy officially came to an end with the release of season 4 on Aug. 8, 2024. We've known since August 2022 that The Umbrella Academy season 4 would be the final season of the Netflix original series.

Well, it sounds like the plan for showrunner Steve Blackman was for the series to run for four seasons. That's what Blackman originally pitched to Netflix, according to a report from TV Line. The report was published in June 2022, two months before the show was renewed for its fourth and final season.

He found himself able to relate deeply to Diego’s struggles with abandonment issues and a strong drive to prove his worth at the time. Now at age 34, Castañeda says portraying the character over the multiple seasons has given him a new outlook.

On “The Umbrella Academy,” it was always about the end of the world. From the very first episode of the Netflix based on the comic by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, the superpowered siblings at the center were tasked with saving the world from themselves — again, and again, and again.
So it was only fitting that the series finale — aptly titled “End of the Beginning” — would tackle this problem head on, forcing Viktor (Elliot Page), Luther (Tom Hopper), Diego (David Castañeda), Alison (Emmy Raver-Lampman), Klaus (Robert Sheehan), Ben (Justin H. Min), and Five (Aidan Gallagher) to reckon with their own role in all the catastrophes they’ve witnessed and how they can set it all right once and for all. They broke the timeline just by being born, and the only way to stop infinite timelines and world-ending debacles is to remove themselves from the equation.

The Umbrella Academy: Why is Lila's Bracelet Important in Season 4? - Main Image
What's up with Lila's bracelet in The Umbrella Academy season 4? This little trinket means more to Diego and Lila's story than you think. Considering that it was brought up at the end of the show, here's what confused fans about it.
Spoiler Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Netflix's The Umbrella Academy season 4, so proceed with caution.
Lila's Hatred of Bracelets Doesn't Make Sense
What seems such a small detail about Lila doesn't seem as small to Diego. While they got off to a rough start in The Umbrella Academy season 2, they naturally developed feelings for one another over time.
When Diego and Lila first met in the second season, he was ironically weaving a bracelet as part of an activity, which Lila took behind his back.
Since then, Diego had somehow associated her with it.
