10 Terrifying Non-Horror Movies That Are Based On A True Story
Image
Contains discussion of death, torture, and sexual assault.

By its very nature, horror is designed to disturb, provoke, and scare its audience. As such, it comes as little surprise that horror has traditionally been the genre associated with the scariest movies of all time. However, cinema has played host to a number of offerings from outside the genre that are just as terrifying as the scariest horror film, if not more so. While film fans may primarily look to the best horror movies of all time for their cinematic scares, a film's ability to terrify its audience is by no means limited to one genre.

This status quo is only compounded when the movie draws inspiration from an unbelievable true story. The fact that the horrific events being depicted by the movie in question are based in reality lends an eerie air of authenticity to proceedings, one that emphasizes the...

Banshee, Ep. 3.10: “We All Pay Eventually” continues opening doors
Banshee, Season 3: Episode 10 – “We All Pay Eventually”

Written by Jennifer Ames & Steve Turner

Directed by Loni Peristere

Returns to Cinemax in 2016 for a fourth season

In all of the craziness that is “We All Pay Eventually,” Banshee displays its growth over three gripping years by giving two supporting characters the chance to verbalize the heart of the episode, season and series thus far:

“I am guys like that…I will always be that man…I am doing everything I can to change. And every once in a while, I manage to convince myself that I’m a better person.”

And when Bunker gets so angry, Brock shows him what that really is:

“That isn’t anger that you’re feeling. That’s the shame and guilt…That is what makes you better than them. If you didn’t feel that, that’s when I’d start to worry.”

Banshee, Ep. 3.07: “You Can’t Hide from the Dead” is a technical powerhouse
Banshee, Season 3: Episode 7 – “You Can’t Hide from the Dead”

Written by Chris Kelley

Directed by Greg Yaitanes

Airs Friday nights at 10 on Cinemax

A Short Preface:

In these Banshee reviews, I generally try to approach the series from a more literary perspective. This writing staff, led by novelist/co-creator Jonathan Tropper, has a great sense of genre and how to highlight certain themes that can resonate well for viewers so far removed from the kind of life that Banshee presents its characters. But “You Can’t Hide from the Dead” demands me to take a step back. Though I have some experience with screenwriting, I have none whatsoever when it comes to other aspects of filmmaking. When I see something like Children of Men or Birdman or Boyhood, I mostly just sit back and say “Wooowww…” That said, I’ll have to do my best here with what...

Banshee, Ep. 3.02: Perceptions matter in “Snakes and Whatnot”
Banshee, Season 3: Episode 2 – “Snakes and Whatnot”

Written by Halley Gross

Directed by Loni Peristere

Airs Friday nights at 10 on Cinemax

If last week’s season three premiere suggested the importance of legacy in Banshee, “Snakes and Whatnot” is the companion piece that shows how one’s legacy can be controlled by perception. It’s said that history is written by the victors, and several characters here–Rebecca, Chayton and Nola chief among them–want to make sure that they’re both taken seriously and come out on top.

Nola’s naturally callous demeanor, while one of her most entertaining qualities from a viewer’s perspective, made it hard to gauge how much she cared about her brother Alex. She was there offering curt advice when he was slipping up, but her return to Banshee shows how deep sibling love goes and how it’s easy to be taken for granted.

Banshee Season Two Cements the Action Series as the Most Badass Show on TV [Review - ★★★★]
Showrunner Greg Yaitanes has elevated the Cinemax series Banshee to an entirely new level of awesome by turning it into an action ensemble for the ages. Season two introduced new characters, killed old ones and whipped its legion of fans (aka Fanshees) into a frenzy with a great, weekly social media promotion spearheaded by its cast. The second season kicks off directly after the bloodbath that left villainous Rabbit on the run and the small town of Banshee riddled with bullets. An investigator comes to town to interview everyone who was involved in the mess and we as viewers begin to see real consequences of the actions these people took last season. Carrie (Ivana Miličević) heads to prison for her vigilante rescue efforts while her husband Gordon (Rus Blackwell) descends into a drunken...

Banshee, Ep. 2.10: “Bullets and Tears” is a smart, forward-thinking season finale
Banshee, Season 2: Episode 10 – “Bullets and Tears”

Written by Jonathan Tropper

Directed by Greg Yaitanes

Renewed for a third season to premiere in 2015

In last week’s review, I talked a little bit about how the decision to keep Rabbit around for another season might have been an understandable misstep for the freshman series, Banshee. “Bullets and Tears” makes the best case possible for why Rabbit’s presence this season has at least been important in helping develop the relationship between the man known as Lucas Hood (or Tom Palmer, as he would have been known in another life) and Anastasia. And even though I would have liked to have seen more Proctor or Chayton in the main antagonist roles this season (more on that below), “Bullets and Tears” is about as perfect of an ending to the Rabbit years of Banshee as you could get.

Part of that comes...

Ivana Milicevic Talks Banshee, Comparing the Seasons, Getting Fan Feedback, Her Character’s Complicated Relationships & Shooting Prison Scenes
The Cinemax drama series Banshee is wrapping up its second season (and thankfully has already been picked up for a third), as Lucas Hood (Antony Starr), an ex-con and master thief who has assumed the identity of the town sheriff, continues to attempt to find a balance between his own criminal activities and solving crimes in a town with more bad elements than any one person can keep track of. It’s intense, violent and bad-ass, but it’s also one of the most fun roller-coaster rides on television. The show also stars Ivana Milicevic, Ulrich Thomsen, Frankie Faison, Hoon Lee, Rus Blackwell, Matt Servitto, Demetrius Grosse, Trieste Kelly Dunn, Lili Simmons, Antony Ruivivar and Odette Annable. Banshee, Ep. 2.07: There are many “Ways to Bury a Man”
Banshee, Season 2: Episode 7 – “Ways to Bury a Man”

Written by Doug Jung

Directed by Loni Peristere

Airs Friday nights at 10 on Cinemax

With so many different directions to go and so few episodes left in its second season, Banshee surprises in “Ways to Bury a Man” by sticking to a plot it could have easily moved on from and by bringing back an essential dynamic of the series to the forefront. That plot and dynamic center around Jason Hood and Kai Proctor, respectively. In last week’s episode, Burton killed Jason and cleaned up the murder scene to give off the impression that the kid skipped town without saying goodbye to Hood. You’d be justified in wondering how Burton and Proctor would have missed something like that huge bag of cash in the bathroom, but for narrative purposes, it’s essential to tipping off Hood that there’s foul play involved.

Banshee, Ep. 2.06: “Armies of One” – lightning strikes twice
Banshee, Season 2: Episode 6 – “Armies of One”

Written by John Romano

Directed by Babak Najafi

Airs Friday nights at 10 on Cinemax

“I don’t know if anyone ever changes, really. But we can evolve, right? I mean, that’s what we’re trying to do, isn’t it, just become better versions of ourselves?”

Babak Najafi and John Romano absolutely killed it in last week’s episode of Banshee, which is easily - easily – in the running for best television episode of the year. The director-writer pair returns this week in “Armies of One” and delivers something just as powerful and engaging, but in an entirely different way. If “The Truth About Unicorns” felt a lot like a Sofia Coppola film, “Armies of One” finds a home next to the works of Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu (Amores perros and 21 Grams). Its narrative is much more disjointed than the average Banshee entry,...

How Banshee Became One of Television’s Best Series
Opening remarks

It’s not even February and, already, 2014 is shaping up to be a massive year for television. True Detective announced itself as the year’s first new stand-out series. Against all odds, Dan Harmon and Community returned and are putting together a respectable comeback season. FX’s fantastic and hard-working Justified continues to solidify its place among the greats of the past decade. And Girls‘ unique blend of comedy and drama is once again pushing the narrative boundaries of the half-hour series in its third season.

One series, though, is leading the charge at the beginning of the year. The most unlikely of heroes, Cinemax’s Banshee, in just a matter of three weeks, has matured into something truly special – something a lot of TV writers refer to as “appointment viewing” when describing other series. With limited experience dabbling in co-produced original programming, Cinemax released Banshee – its first...

Banshee Season Two Review: Cinemax’s Rich, Violent Drama Returns Strong
Last year, Banshee -- created by Alan Ball (and much closer to Six Feet Under than True Blood) -- quickly established itself as a hidden gem in its inaugural season.  Mixing visceral violence with beautiful cinematography, and a number of fun and emotional arcs, Banshee provided an intense experience that continues in its second season.  The past haunting Sheriff Lucas Hood (played by Antony Starr, whose character's real name is still unknown) as well as Ana/Carrie (Ivana Millicevic) can never really be put away, even after such a bloody finale.  New complications mix with old ones to create a rich and often difficult tapestry of problems for the town and Hood, with once again engaging results.  Hit the jump for more. For those who haven't watched the first season since last year, the second season premiere does a nice job catching viewers up on where the characters left off...

According to Deadline, Banshee’s ten-episode second season will drop on Friday, January 10. The series stars Antony Starr as Lucas Hood, an ex-con and master thief who assumes the identity of the sheriff of Banshee,...

Banshee episode 9 review: Always The Cowboy
Review James Stansfield 24 Jun 2013 - 23:15

Blood plays a big part in Always The Cowboy,...
