50 Years Ago, Robert Altman’s Tumultuous and Transcendent ‘Nashville’ Told the Story of What America Would Become
Image
As a film critic, the question I get asked more than any other is, “What’s your favorite movie?” For decades, I’ve given the same answer. But in the last 10 years or so, when I say, “My favorite movie is ‘Nashville,'” I always have to wonder if the person I’m talking to has even heard of it. Many have not. A handful have heard of it in an “Oh, yeah, right” sort of way. The rest, a distinct minority, know just what I’m talking about. I can always tell by the look in someone’s eye when I’ve stumbled upon a fellow “Nashville” believer.

I first saw Robert Altman’s teeming, sprawling, exultant, tragic, transporting masterpiece, which came out 50 years ago this summer, when I was a freshman in college. The film had an effect on me that’s hard to describe. I didn’t...

Ari Aster and Museum of the Moving Image Are Hosting an ‘Eddington’-Inspired Film Series
Image
Ari Aster is expanding the fictional town of Eddington into Queens, NY. The auteur is partnering with the Museum of the Moving Image to host the new film series “Eddington City Limits,” highlighting the features that inspired his acclaimed Covid-set Western.

Aster will be in attendance for two out of the five films that will screen; the program ranges from Robert Altman’s iconic “Nashville” to Lars von Trier’s beloved “Dogville.” The series is co-programmed by Aster and MoMI Senior Curator of Film Michael Koresky, and will take place from August 15 to 31. “Eddington” opens in theaters today, July 18.

As the description for the film series states, “Eddington City Limits” will include “movies that both directly inspired or echo the escalating madness of ‘Eddington,’ depicting powder-keg communities ready to spill over into violence or enclosed worlds so given to conspiracy and obsession that there’s no longer any sense of coherent reality.

10 Horror Movies That Shamelessly Copied Twilight Zone Episodes
Image
The Twilight Zone is one of the most influential television series of all time. Its anthology format and clever updates of campfire tales struck a chord with audiences in the early 1960s, as creator Rod Serling and his colleagues combined sci-fi with a strong social conscience. The series' signature ironic twists have never lost their sting, and the moral lessons beneath the chills give it an evergreen quality that helped it endure over the years.

In the process, it has influenced countless sci-fi and horror filmmakers who were inspired by it at an early age. Some of them went on to direct movies with a close resemblance to Serling's tales, and there are plenty of feature-length movies which bear the distinctive stamp of a specific episode. Each one tells its own story, while carrying the core of an idea that effectively started with The Twilight Zone.

‘A Complete Unknown’ Fact vs. Fiction: Bob Dylan Experts Go Deep on What’s True or Fanciful in the Celebrated Biopic
Image
“How does it feel?” is one way by which to measure a movie. But if you’ve seen “A Complete Unknown,” the Bob Dylan biopic that opened on Christmas Day, you may have left the theater singing to yourself (to the tune of “Like a Rolling Stone”): How much is reeeaaallll?

The short response is: A lot. But the long answer involves acknowledging director James Mangold’s film taking liberties in terms of a condensation of timelines, the conjoining of separate incidents, fictional character names in a couple of cases, and moments of sheer imagination and fictionalization. It’s certainly possible to enjoy “A Complete Unknown” without stressing too much over which parts are fact and which are fanciful. But for those who want to take a deep dive into how much the movie aligns with the known historical record, we looked to several Dylan experts to help sort it out.

Freddy Krueger's Famous Nursery Rhyme, Explained
Image
Horror master Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street is one of the most beloved franchises in the genre, and its famous slasher villain, Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), is equally beloved. Since it has remained undeniably popular in the 40 years since the first film's release, it is hard to believe that Craven had a difficult time trying to get the project picked up. All the major studios balked at the premise, claiming they didn't think audiences would find dreams scary enough. Luckily, New Line eventually gave the movie the greenlight, thus giving birth to one of horror's most iconic franchises.

Despite being made on a lower budget, the movie became a big success and catapulted Freddy into horror icon status. The surprise success of the movie paved the way for seven sequels, a crossover with fellow horror icon Jason Voorhees, a remake, a video game, a TV series, and countless merchandise.

A Nightmare On Elm Street Review: Freddy Still Has Cutting Edge, 40 Years Later
Image
It's hard to overstate just how significant Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street still is. The slasher classic has successfully infiltrated our popular subconscious, reaching a sinister gloved hand into the imaginations of generations of filmmakers and reshaping modern horror cinema. It's perhaps only with hindsight that the full extent of the 1984 movie's impact can be appreciated. But even with its iconic villain, inspired premise, and archetypal story, the original A Nightmare on Elm Street is much more than an artifact to be admired. It remains a thrilling spectacle albeit with some of its originality tarnished.

Robert Englund Reveals the Only Way He'll Play Freddy Krueger Again
Image
Don't count on seeing Robert Englund getting back into the makeup for a return as Freddy Krueger, as the actor has confirmed that he's physically finished with portraying the character. However, he's also reaffirmed that he's still up for playing an animated version of the Springwood Slasher.

To promote the new 4K restoration of A Nightmare on Elm Street, Englund spoke about his run in the role of Freddy Krueger in a new interview for Bloody Disgusting. Just recently, Elm Street co-star Heather Langenkamp (Nancy Thompson) hinted that she believed Englund had one more Freddy movie left in him in a separate interview. Englund himself insists he truly is finished, as he's just "too old" to handle it at this point in his life, though he's open to voicing Freddy for an animated project.

A Nightmare on Elm Street Almost Cast a Very Different Actor for Freddy
Image
Quick Links Wes Craven's Spine-Tingling Horror Icon David Warner Almost Starred as the Legendary Villain Robert Englund Scares Up Some Movie Magic

The metal-clawed, heavily disfigured child killer Freddy Krueger became a pop culture icon and legendary horror villain when he first made his spectacular debut in Wes Craven's 1984 masterpiece A Nightmare on Elm Street. The unforgettable antagonist was gloriously portrayed by Robert Englund in eight spine-tingling installments in the chilling franchise and was created by a master of horror himself, Wes Craven.

While moviegoers everywhere have come to know and love Englund as the demented Krueger, he was not actually the trailblazing filmmaker's first choice to star as the undead murderer who stalks his victims in their dreams. English stage and screen star David Warner was originally chosen to tackle the hefty role, but in an unfortunate turn of events, was forced to walk away from the project,...

A Nightmare on Elm Street Cast Looks Back on Freddy Krueger's Legacy
Image
It's been almost four decades since fans were introduced to Freddy Krueger's unique brand of terror in A Nightmare on Elm Street. To mark the milestone, actors Heather Langenkamp and Robert Englund, who played Nancy Thompson and the dream-invading killer respectively, reflected on the character's legacy.

Speaking to ComicBook, the actors talked about how Freddy would adapt to the age of social media."I almost think it's impossible to have a scary character with social media, because by the time you've already put out the scary side, there's like 100 memes of you being ridiculous, and they've figured out a way to humiliate you, so I don't know if Freddy could even exist today," Langenkamp said.

Robert Englund & Heather Langenkamp on Why A Nightmare on Elm Street Wouldn't Work in a World of Smartphones
Image
A Nightmare On Elm Street is celebrating its 40th anniversary, and stars Robert Englund and Heather Langenkamp have been reminiscing and sharing their thoughts on one of the most iconic horror franchises of all time. Like many movies of the 80s, the world in which Englunds Freddy Krueger rules the dreams of teenagers in Springwood is a long way from the technologically advanced one of today. So how would the razor-fingered dream demon still manage to terrorize his victims in a world of smartphones and social media?

While speaking with Comicbook, Englund and Langenkamp pondered this very question, and for Langenkamp in particular, the idea of Freddy being able to have the same terrifying presence while being subjected to meme culture would be pretty much impossible. She said:

Gosh. I mean, I almost think it's impossible to have a scary character with social media because by the time you've already put out the scary side,...

Nightmare on Elm Street Star Wants Robert Englund Back as Freddy Krueger

Robert Englund is so linked with the character of Freddy Krueger from the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise that it's virtually impossible to imagine anyone else taking on the role. Since first playing the horror icon in Wes Craven's 1984 horror classic, Englund became an instant pop culture fixture, firmly placed on the Mount Rushmore of horror movie villains. It'll be 40 years since the release of the first movie, and Englund has been candid in recent interviews that he's now too old to play the character again, but one of his former co-stars and Freddy Krueger's first final girl adversary, Heather Langenkamp, thinks he's more than capable of putting on Freddy's claws again.

Wes Craven at an event for Scream 4 (2011)
This year marks the 40th anniversary of writer/director Wes Craven’s horror classic A Nightmare on Elm Street – and, as we’ve previously reported, Warner Bros. is celebrating the film’s anniversary by giving it a 4K Blu-ray release on October 1st! A trailer for the 4K release has dropped online, and you can check it out in the embed above. While it’s great that the original A Nightmare on Elm Street is coming to 4K, one thing we’ve heard zero news about is the possibility of a new Elm Street movie going into production any time soon. Speaking to our friends at Bloody Disgusting, Elm Street heroine Heather Langenkamp said it’s a shame there’s no new movie news to share… especially since she believes that Robert Englund still has it in him, despite his statements to the contrary, to play dream stalker Freddy Krueger one more time.

A Nightmare On Elm Street Rating Change Sparks Debate in the UK
Image
BBFC changed A Nightmare on Elm Street rating from 18 to 15, based on updated standards and public support for reclassification. Recent trends show audiences more accepting of fantastical violence. Film's kills occur within a fantasy context, leaving more to imagination. Despite some pushback, film's reclassification allows more accessibility for UK youth. US is unlikely to reclassify due to different standards.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has changed the rating of Wes Craven's seminal A Nightmare on Elm Street from an 18 to a 15. That's the equivalent of the film being changed from an R to a PG-13 in the United States. This follows their research into the public's support for "older content to be reclassified in line with modern standards." Or, as a BBFC spokesperson put it to the Guardian:

At the BBFC, we review the classification of older films when they are submitted to us by the distributor,...

Longlegs Star Maika Monroe Wants to Take on Freddy Krueger in A Nightmare on Elm Street Reboot
Image
Maika Monroe has been busy establishing herself as one of horror's most prominent scream queens ever since her breakthrough in 2014's It Follows. Now that the little horror movie that could, Longlegs, has opened to over $20 million, her clout has risen considerably and cemented the idea that the horror movies she stars in can be hugely successful both critically and financially. With this in mind, there's one major, long-dormant horror franchise she would love the chance to resurrect.

It Follows, The Guest, Greta, Villains, Watcher, and Longlegs are all originals, and all have achieved either critical success, financial success, or a mixture of the two. And, now, Monroe hopes to see the same happen with A Nightmare on Elm Street. And Monroe is sure that Nightmare is the one for her, because when asked by Collider what her dream franchise would be, she said:

Nightmare on Elm Street Star Shares Legacy Sequel Hope: 'How Could You Say No?'
Image
Heather Langenkamp is open to reprising her role as Nancy Thompson from A Nightmare on Elm Street, reflecting on her character's evolution. Despite franchise reboot not taking off, Langenkamp believes there are still great opportunities for new battles in the Nightmare on Elm Street series. With Freddy Krueger's last movie appearance in 2010's reboot, the franchise may struggle without Robert Englund's involvement.

It is almost 40 years since Nancy Thompson squared off with Freddy Krueger for the first time in A Nightmare on Elm Street, and she is more than willing to do it all again. While Robert Englund has almost certainly ruled himself out of returning as the child-killing dream demon, actress Heather Langenkamp is open to reprising her role as Nancy at least one more time if the opportunity arose.

In an interview with the Nightmare on Film Street podcast, Langenkamp reflected on Nancys journey in the franchise,...

New Line Cinema Needs to Reboot Their Slasher Universe
Image
New Line Cinema's history is rooted in horror, especially the iconic slasher film A Nightmare on Elm Street. Freddy Krueger, Leatherface, and Jason Voorhees are top-tier slasher icons under New Line, but there is potential for reboots of Critters and Alone in the Dark. With Hollywood's focus on '80s properties, New Line could bring back slasher classics like Critters or create new hits, as they did producing Evil Dead Rise.

New Line Cinema, "The House that Freddy Built." And, eventually, the house behind Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings trilogy. But, still, it was horror that laid down the bricks that Sam and Frodo would traverse to toss the ring. Specifically, slashers, when they handled the United States re-release of Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. They also dealt with the distribution of Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead.

But, of course, it was...

The Origin of Freddy Krueger: Why He Started Killing, Explained
Image
Freddy Krueger became an iconic horror villain through his unique ability to kill victims in their dreams, leaving no physical evidence behind. The origin story of Freddy Krueger reveals a dark history of abuse and murder, solidifying his status as a terrifying figure in pop culture. Freddy's weakness, like Pennywise's, lies in his fear of fire and reliance on the fear of his victims to fuel his reign of terror in the dream world.

When fictional murderer Freddy Krueger was introduced in the first A Nightmare on Elm Street film in 1984, no one could have predicted that he would emerge as one of the most iconic screen villains in history, especially Robert Englund, a veteran character actor who ended up playing Freddy in seven additional films and a short-lived television series over the course of approximately 20 years.

Prior to the release of A Nightmare on Elm Street, audiences hadn...

10 Supernatural Horror Movies That Aren't About Ghosts
Image
Supernatural horror movies have featured a wide range of creatures throughout the years, including monsters, demons, witches, zombies, and the Devil. Ghost-free supernatural horror has been captivating audiences for over a century, with early films featuring creatures from the darkest corners of writers' imaginations. These movies often subvert classic ghost tropes and continue to surprise and scare audiences with new and terrifying movie monsters.

The word "supernatural" immediately invokes images of ghosts, but countless great supernatural horror movies are about other creatures of an otherworldly nature. Monsters, demons, witches, zombies, and the Devil are some of the nefarious beings that have scared audiences witless in supernatural horror movies over the years. They've made for some of the best horror movies of all time.

Ghost-free supernatural horror spans the ages, too. Examples go back a whole century, with early cinematic audiences subjected to the vilest of creatures from writers' imaginations. The...

8 Freddy Krueger Theories That Completely Change The Nightmare On Elm Street Movies
Image
This article contains mentions of child murder, rape, and pedophilia.

While A Nightmare on Elm Street is a brilliant horror franchise on its own, many theories change the impact of the movies. The original A Nightmare on Elm Street helped define modern horror and propel the careers of now-famous actors. With the success of the first movie, the Freddy Krueger franchise expanded to include nine movies, a TV series, twelve novels, and numerous comic books. There's even discussion of another reboot on the horizon.

The A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise centers on child murderer and pedophile Freddy Krueger who can jump into characters' dreams. If he murders someone within their dream, they also die in real life, allowing him to continue his killing spree long after his corporeal death. Freddy is one of the most iconic 80s horror movie characters, even inspiring other pop culture. Additionally, many theories surrounding...

A Nightmare On Elm Street Ending Explained: Sins Of The Mother
Image
Wes Craven was inspired to write his 1984 horror hit "A Nightmare on Elm Street" after a real-life case of what was called Sudden Unexplained Death Syndrome that, according to several articles in the Los Angeles Times, was afflicting America's Hmong refugee population. People would suffer from horrifying nightmares and soon became afraid to fall asleep. When they did finally lose consciousness, they mysteriously died. The deaths remained unexplained for years. Craven extrapolated a horror movie from these cases, envisioning a nightmarish killer who occupied multiple people's dreams. If the killer killed you in your dream, you died in the waking world.

Craven named his killer Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) and explained that Freddy was the ghost of a neighborhood child murderer who had been killed by a group of local parents -- exercising vigilante justice -- years earlier. Somehow, Freddy passed into the realm of the supernatural. Now he "lives" as a burned-up,...

A Nightmare on Elm Street: Is the Classic Horror Movie's Ending Misunderstood?
Image
The ending of A Nightmare on Elm Street remains a mystery after 39 years. Was the ending a dream? Was it all a dream? Half the movie? Two-thirds? The lack of clarity with its closing keeps the original film alive in our daydreams still. What the end means is left to the subjectivity of the viewer and allows for numerous interpretations as to what is happening in the surreal third act of the movie.

The understanding of the ending for many fans is shaped by the sequels. Two generations of horror fans have come to the Nightmare series as a fully formed franchise with multiple sequels.

Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) returns in part two and the rest of the sequels, and Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp) is still alive in part three. The sequels present the ending of the first film as an indecisive battle, which both Freddy and Nancy survive. The...

Ronee Blakley Returns to Music With a Dylan Cover and a George Floyd Song Bookending New Album, ‘Atom Bomb Baby’
Image
Ronee Blakley still remains better known to many as an actor than a singer-songwriter, thanks to screen appearances like her Oscar-nominated turn in “Nashville” and later appearance in “A Nightmare on Elm Street.” But she was releasing major-label albums in the early ’70s before a plum Robert Altman part landed her on the cover of Newsweek. Now she’s returning to music with her first non-soundtrack studio album in years, “Atom Bomb Baby,” which has just been released on digital services.

The album has a strong tie-in to another project that brought her back into the limelight last year: Martin Scorsese’s “Rolling Thunder Revue” documentary about the legendary Bob Dylan ensemble tour on which she was one of the top-billed performers. Before the tour commenced, Blakley was called into a recording studio for a seat-of-their-pants recording session for an epic single, “Hurricane,” about the plight of incarcerated boxer Rubin “Hurricane” Carter,...

Man Out of Time: The Music and Mystery of David Blue
Image
He knew the right people, worked with the right collaborators, and looked and dressed better than many in his circle. But as even his friends acknowledged, timing was never one of David Blue’s strong suits — and if anyone needed a reminder, it arrived at his funeral.

For much of Blue’s career leading up to that day in December 1982, life hadn’t seemed especially fair. The singer, songwriter, and guitarist had rarely complained about it, but everyone except him seemed to be reaping the rewards of a life in music.

Horror Actressing: Ronee Blakley in "A Nightmare on Elm Street"
by Jason Adams

Marge Thompson is such a weirdo. Less than ten years after her Oscar nomination for Robert Altman's classic Nashville the singer turned actress Ronee Blakley was playing the Mom in a slasher flick. Some might disparage that turn of events -- say she was "reduced to" playing the Mom in a slasher flick. I am not one of those people. Especially when you see the gloriously strange performance that Blakley turned in. There's nothing unmemorable about the final girl Nancy Thompson's momma -- she'll haunt your dreams!

A Nightmare on Elm Street is about the sins of the parents being visited, rather traumatically, upon their children, a symbiotic theme that Craven would come to visit time and again with his horror films...

A Nightmare On Elm Street Deleted Scene Made Freddy’s Origin Much, Much Worse
Freddy Krueger, the vicious, dream-slashing villain from the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, has more than earned his spot among the horror genre’s most brutal icons. Even before he reached the peak of his paranormal powers, Krueger was a vicious child killer, one who managed to squirm out of a jail sentence because of a technicality. This, as fans of the original film know, led the parents to take matters into their own hands.

It’s not as if Wes Craven’s pinnacle 1984 film hadn’t already made the character into one of the most horrific of all time. But as it turns out, the director’s original vision made Krueger’s origin much, much worse.

Those details can be viewed in the deleted scene up above. As you’ll notice, most of it actually did find a place in the movie, as we see heroine Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp...

Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound (2019)
Film Review: ‘Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound’
Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound (2019)
Among the pivotal and juicy nuggets of film history recounted in “Making Waves: The Art of Cinematic Sound,” Midge Costin’s wonkishly engaging movie-love documentary, there’s one that speaks volumes about the foundation of the New Hollywood.

It’s 1967, and George Lucas, who is three years away from making his first film, is on the set of “Finian’s Rainbow,” the clomping warhorse of a Hollywood musical that his buddy and fellow film-school brat Francis Ford Coppola has been hired to direct. Coppola, who already dreams of making his own more personal film, asks Lucas if he knows a good sound designer; Lucas tips him off to his USC colleague Walter Murch. Coppola and Murch then team up to make “The Rain People,” a road odyssey they literally shoot across the country, with Murch using the new Nagra Portable Audio Recorder. That’s when these filmmakers have their aha moment.

Ronee Blakley Remembers Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue: ‘We Were Delirious’
Bob Dylan
As fanciful as Martin Scorsese’s new film about Bob Dylan’s Rolling Thunder Revue of 1975 is, it doesn’t aim to turn truth into myth nearly as much as the infamous movie Dylan himself made during that period, “Renaldo and Clara” — in which the cast list had Ronee Blakley playing “Mrs. Dylan.” Whatever impish reasons he might have had for doing that, it was undoubtedly a sign of the affection Dylan had for Blakley, who’d come right off a promotional tour for Robert Altman’s “Nashville” onto his tour, with a quick stop to record his single “Hurricane.”

Blakley appears in archival footage and fresh interviews in the Netflix film “Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese,” and she can also be heard singing with Dylan throughout the new 14-cd boxed set “Rolling Thunder: The 1975 Live Recordings.” She’s also known for her solo albums...

Carolina Ardohain, Guilherme Winter, Mónica Antonópulos, and Juan Sorini in Desire (2017)
Film Review: ‘Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese’
Carolina Ardohain, Guilherme Winter, Mónica Antonópulos, and Juan Sorini in Desire (2017)
In the summer of 1975, in the middle of recording his album “Desire,” Bob Dylan decided that he wanted to go on tour again, but that he also wanted a break. A break from the crowds, from the press scrutiny, maybe even from his own stardom. So in the fall of that year, he launched the Rolling Thunder Revue, a knowingly small-time ramble of a concert tour that was designed, from the outset, to be a kind of antiquated floating carnival of down-home traveling players. Call it “A Prairie Home Companion” meets Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.

The venues wouldn’t be sold-out arenas, like the ones that Dylan had played, along with the Band, to rapturous audiences the year before. They would be concert halls in places like Plymouth, Mass., and Rochester, N.Y., and Bangor, Maine. And though the tour was billed on posters as an all-star counterculture revue,...
