Tony Hendra Dies, Band Manager in This Is Spinal Tap Was 79

Sad news. Tony Hendra, the veteran actor and comedian well known for his role in the iconic comedy movie This Is Spinal Tap as the band's manager, has passed away. According to his wife, Carla Hendra, Tony died on Thursday in Yonkers, New York, due to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, Hendra was first diagnosed in 2019. He was 79 years old.

Born in Hertfordshire, England in 1941, Hendra moved to America in 1964. He was given free passage to sail into the New York Harbor on the SS United States in exchange for performing stand-up comedy. After making a name for himself in the local comedy scene, Hendra began to appear on television shows like The Merv Griffin Show and The Ed Sullivan Show to perform. He also served as a writer for National Lampoon magazine, co-creating the group's first album Radio Dinner and co-writing the stage show Lemmings.

2012 BAFTA TV nominees: 'Downton Abbey's' Maggie Smith, 'Modern Family' and more
The British Academy of Film and Television Arts announced Tuesday (April 24) the nominations for its 2012 television awards. British miniseries "Appropriate Adult," which chronicles the real-life serial killer Fred West, leads the way with four nominations.

Other notable nominations include Dame Maggie Smith up for Supporting Actress for her work on "Downton Abbey" - it's the only nomination "Downton" received, after earning two nominations the previous year. "Modern Family" also earned a nomination in the International category.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences kicks off Part 2 of its 27th annual "Contemporary Documentaries" screening series with James Longley's "Sari's Mother" and Michael Moore's "Sicko" at 7 p.m. March 25 at the Linwood Dunn Theater in Hollywood.

A showcase for both feature-length and short documentaries drawn from among films considered for the 2007 Academy Awards, the program, for which admission is free, runs through June.

The schedule includes:

March 25: Longley's "Sari's Mother" and Moore's "Sicko"

April 1: Jon Blair's "Ochberg's Orphans" and Richard Berge, Nicole Newnham and Bonni Cohen's "The Rape of Europa"
