M3GAN 2.0's Best Running Gag Pays Homage To One Of The Goofiest Action Actors Ever
Image
This article contains spoilers for "M3GAN 2.0."

"M3GAN" is a film about the nuances and pitfalls of parenting, wherein a technology guru, Gemma (Allison Williams), creates an artificially intelligent doll, M3GAN (Amie Donald and Jenna Davis), to essentially take over parenting duties of her orphaned niece, Cady (Violet McGraw). In true Hal 9000 meets Chucky fashion, it doesn't go well, as M3GAN becomes self-aware and goes to murderous lengths to try and complete her objective. This month's sequel, "M3GAN 2.0" (read our review here), sees the titular robot begin to grow and evolve past her initial programming, an evolution that's a metaphor for any developing child as well as one that's in tandem with M3GAN's "sister," Cady. Like any young person, Cady is hungry for role models beyond her own family unit, and given her developmental history, it wouldn't be a surprise if she chose one that was a little ... strange.

Timebomb | In 1991, Michael Biehn got his own Jason Bourne thriller
Image
The Terminator’s Michael Biehn took the lead in 1991’s Timebomb – a B-thriller that shows what a charismatic, intense actor he can be.

The very same year his cameo as Kyle Reese was trimmed out of Terminator 2: Judgment Day’s theatrical cut, Michael Biehn finally got a deserved leading role – albeit in one of the weirder films in his long career. Currently streaming on Amazon Prime, 1991’s Timebomb isn’t a lost classic, but it absolutely is a reminder of what a terrific actor Biehn was in his 1980s and 90s prime. In a more just Hollywood, he would have been an out-and-out movie star.

Biehn plays Eddy Kay, a quiet watch repairer who’s so nice that it almost seems a bit odd that he’s single. Instead, he lives in a crummy single-room apartment with nothing in it other than a distractingly comprehensive selection of jigsaw puzzles.

10 Most Underrated Martial Arts Movies That Don't Get Enough Love
Image
The martial arts subgenre is packed, making it easy for some films to undeservedly be given less love or attention. Often, the films lost in the mix are those that don't have notable stars or a lasting impact behind them. Audiences are likely to prioritize films with the biggest martial artists over films starring lesser-known action movie stars, like One-Armed Boxer or The City of Violence. However, these films have just as thrilling action sequences as the more well-known martial arts movies and are deserving of praise.

Brushed aside sequels and movies led by actors who have yet to be established are just a few examples of overlooked martial arts films over the years. The release of martial arts films spans several decades and regions across the world, meaning there is almost always a new, underrated martial arts film waiting to be appreciated by audiences.

‘The Last Kumite’ Review
Image
Stars: Mathis Landwehr, Kira Kortenbach, Matthias Hues, Billy Blanks, Mike Derudder, Mike Möller, Cynthia Rothrock, Kurt McKinney, David “Bolo Jr” Yeung | Written by Ross W. Clarkson, Sean David Lowe | Directed by Ross W. Clarkson

As you can probably tell just from the title, The Last Kumite was inspired by 80s action films, the iconic Bloodsport in particular. And it opens like it stepped out of a time warp from the 1980s with an old-school pop song playing over a montage of scenes shot on the streets of New York City before taking us to the dojo where Michael Rivers is teaching his daughter Bree (Kira Kortenbach).

After an inspirational speech at the end of her training, it’s time to go see Mom. If you guessed that means a trip to the cemetery, you’ve seen as many of these films as I have.

The next day, Michael fights in...

Cynthia Rothrock's 10 Best Movies, Ranked
Image
Commonly referred to as the Queen of martial arts, Cynthia Rothrock is a legend in the world of action films. Rothrock rose to prominence in Hong Kong during the 1980s as the first non-Asian to become a major star in Hong Kong martial arts cinema. Although never achieving that same degree of fame in the United States, Rothrock gained a cult following during the straight-to-vhs martial arts B-movie boom of the 1990s alongside the likes of Billy Blanks and Don "The Dragon" Wilson. Also, worthy of note, is that Rothrock was the primary inspiration for the character Sonya Blade of the hugely successful Mortal Kombat franchise, which has seen many film adaptations. More than just sharing a likeness to Rothrock in appearance, one of Sonya's signature techniques, the "leg grab," have similarities to Rothrock's signature move "The Rothrock Sting," which she has used in many of her films.

Matthias Hues and Mathis Landwehr in The Last Kumite (2024)
The Last Kumite | Trailer released for martial arts legends film
Matthias Hues and Mathis Landwehr in The Last Kumite (2024)
Throwback martial arts action film The Last Kumite heads to streaming in 2024, and here’s the trailer.

There is no question that the 1980s was a vintage time for action films, particularly in Hong Kong. There was a fruitful period in the mid 1980s when Hong Kong directors would hire American martial artists to go toe to toe with onscreen, both to broaden the international appeal and show a wide range of styles.

From Cynthia Rothrock going up against Sammo Hung in Shanghai Express to Richard Norton’s multiple bust ups with Jackie Chan in the likes of City Hunter and Mr Nice Guy, these performers went on to headline a series of low budget American action films that have since gained a cult following, perhaps most notably the China O’Brien series and the numerous No Retreat, No Surrender sequels

The Last Kumite looks set to be a throwback to that style,...

First Teaser Trailer for Throwback Martial Arts Movie 'The Last Kumite'
Image
"It's time!" Capelight Pictures has unveiled a first look teaser for an upcoming 80s / 90s throwback movie called The Last Kumite, directed by filmmaker Ross W. Clarkson. This indie project has been funded on both Kickstarter and Indiegogo, being readied for release in 2024. It's going direct-to-vod in the spring. The Last Kumite is a new spin on the great martial arts films of the 80s & 90s that are still loved amongst action film fans as much today as they were decades ago. The filmmakers describe it as "a new take on the tournament movie inspired by the likes of Bloodsport, Kickboxer and No Retreat No Surrender." Following a martial arts fighter who discovers other martial artists have also been "forced to fight to save their loved ones." Starring newcomer Mathis Landwehr as Michael in the lead role, with a massive throwback cast including Cynthia Rothrock, Michel Qissi, Matthias Hues, Richard Norton,...

10 Great Martial Arts B-Movie Stars That All Fans Of The Genre Need To Know
Image
Martial arts B-movie stars like Matthias Hues, Loren Avedon, and Richard Norton have gained notoriety through their roles in low-budget films. These underground heavy hitters have appeared in iconic martial arts movies like The King of Kickboxers, Cage, and City Hunter. While some stars, like Billy Blanks and Jeff Speakman, have had success outside of the genre, their careers as B-movie stars still deliver exhilarating action.

There are many martial arts B-movie stars whose work should not go unnoticed by those action films. In the long history of martial arts movies, many of the biggest stars of the genre have become household names, including Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen, Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh, and Jean-Claude Van Damme. However, in the '80s, '90s, and early 2000s, many other martial artists have also cultivated sizable followings without making it quite as big as the genre's most well-known stars.

10 Best 90s Dtv Action Stars
Image
The 1990s were an exciting period for action films, with many of them getting released direct-to-video and showing up seemingly randomly at local video stores, requiring fans of the genre to have memberships at multiple locations to get to see everything. There was so much that if attention wasn’t paid, titles would be missed easily or rented twice under different titles at different video stores. Stars emerged within those ranks and gathered the love and adoration of fans. Here are the 10 of the best Dtv action stars of that era:

Dolph Lundgren

Let’s start with the obvious man on the list, the one that everyone saw films from at their local video stores. Lundgren had films that were released in theaters, on video, and direct to cable in some cases during the 1990s, but one thing is for sure, he was a mainstay of the action film aisle...

Action Bronson Hated Writing His New Book, But He Knows He Needed To
Image
Action Bronson makes sure to let me know that he does not want to promote his new book, F*ck It, I’ll Start Tomorrow: A True Story. Over Zoom, he’s animated and seems relieved that the process of putting it together is finally over. It’s not that Bronson, born Ariyan Arslani, thinks the book is bad — more that working on it forced him into an uncomfortable moment of self-reflection. “I hated every second of it, but in a sense, it really did help me,” he says. “It...

Match #1: Jimmy Havoc defeated Shawn Dean My Opinion: 2.8/5

This was way too short, but not bad for some-thing that was less than five minutes. Havoc is having a pretty good run lately, but I wish that the booking would let him past the point he’s being kept at. Dean did good and has a hand to hang on with, but Havoc had more than one hand for grabbing the brass ring up Dean’s ass. That didn’t make sense,...

The Clapper – Review
Ed Helm (center, with hat) as Eddie and Tracy Morgan (to right) as Chris, in The Clapper. Photo courtesy of Momentum Pictures ©

The Clapper is an indie film about a different side of Hollywood, a kind of romantic comedy about an anonymous worker in Los Angeles who ekes out a living as a paid face in the crowd for audiences for infomercials. It is a job kind of like a movie extra but ranked much lower, as clappers are impersonating ordinary people in audiences in advertisements impersonating television programs. Clappers are part of the background that creates the illusion that producers are selling to their real audience.

Director Dito Montiel adapted the script from his novel “Eddie Krumble is the Clapper,” his second book after “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints,” which was also made into an indie film.. The story is semi-autobiographical, based on Montiel’s experiences after moving to L.

Keith Strandberg interview: No Retreat No Surrender
Craig Lines May 3, 2017

For fans of 80s action cinema, No Retreat No Surrender holds a special place. We've been speaking to the man behind the series...

If you were a kid in the 1980s and you liked action movies, chances are you rented No Retreat No Surrender at some point. It was like a more violent, high-octane take on The Karate Kid, with all-American teen Jason (Kurt McKinney) getting martial arts tutelage from no less than The Ghost Of Bruce Lee so he could kick the ass of a muscly Russian (Jean-Claude Van Damme in his first major role). As a kid, this movie was everything to me. It was a 15 cert so a little bit edgy, but still simple and wholesome enough for young me to totally ‘get it’. I had tears streaming down my face the first time I watched it, I was so invested in the final fight.

‘A.W.O.L.’ Blu-ray Review (101 Films)
Stars: Jean-Claude Van Damme, Harrison Page, Deborah Rennard, Lisa Pelikan, Ashley Johnson. Brian Thompson, Voyo Goric, Michel Qissi, George McDaniel, Eric Karson, Ash Adams, William T. Amos, Roz Bosley, Dennis Rucker, Billy Blanks | Written by Sheldon Lettich, Jean-Claude Van Damme | Directed by Sheldon Lettich

When looking at eighties action heroes Jean-Claude Van Damme managed to make a name for himself in a genre built upon already big names and even bigger egos. Although A.W.O.L. (aka Lionheart) was released in 1990 I think it is fair to still class it as an eighties movie, the fashions shown on-screen pretty much confirm it (they are bad). Released this week on Blu-ray as part of 101 Films Cult Movie Collection it stands as a perfect example of everything that made Van Damme a star of the action genre.

When Lyon Gaultier discovers his brother is injured and the Foreign Legion with which...

B-Sides: The Talons of the Eagle Challenge
This weekend’s B-Sides is the theme song to the 1992 direct-to-video action movie Talons of the Eagle. This song is not for your listening pleasure. This song is a dare – a challenge. Can you listen to the whole thing from beginning to end?

I have never seen Talons of the Eagle. Kind of surprising given it starred Billy Blanks and I was all about those cheesy direct-to-video action movies around the time this came out. The Devil's Rejects' Priscilla Barnes co-stars, and here’s the plot according to the IMDb:

After three DEA agents are killed by Mr. Li (James Hong), martial arts champion Tyler Wilson (Blanks) is sent on assignment to Toronto and teams up with Michael Reed (Jalal Merhi). Wilson and Reed enter a martial arts tournament, where they end up saving Mr. Li from being killed by a rival crime boss. Li invites the two to join his staff.

The 15 Most Violent Movie Titles of All Time
There may be a slight possibility that standards for movie titles have become more lenient over the years, since we can't really fathom an action movie like this week's "Bullet to the Head" coming out in 1954 with a title like that. No sir.

The Sylvester Stallone vehicle does stick in your head for some reason, so we thought we'd dig in and find the most gruesome, lurid and downright threatening movie titles ever conceived. Remember, the criteria here ain't the violent content of the film itself, just its nastified handle.

15. '8 Million Ways to Die' (1986)

The unlikely combination of star Jeff Bridges, screenwriter Oliver Stone and director Hal Ashby ("Harold and Maude") came up with this neo-noir concoction, which failed to ignite at the box office and ultimately served as Ashby's swan song. The film itself has a pulpy, sub-"Miami Vice" plot about an alcoholic ex-detective drawn into a...

Next, YouTube selected 16 trainers and 16 chefs to participate in the YouTube Next Chef and YouTube Next Trainer programs, which included three months of virtual classes held on Google+ Hangouts, as well as an equipment kit worth more than $5,000, filming and editing lessons, more than $10,000 worth of promotion on YouTube, and mentoring from some of YouTube’s finest content creators, including DeStorm, FreddieW, Michelle Phan, Chow.com and Billy Blanks. YouTube Global Creator Initiatives Manager Bing Chen notes “there are still millions of...

The top 25 must-see movies of 2012
Next year’s full to bursting with exciting movies, so to help out a little, here’s our pick of 25 must-see movies out in 2012…

As 2011 draws to a close, one eye is inevitably on the treats that are lying ahead for 2012. With that in mind, we've got our line-up of, as things stands, the 25 films that are brightest on our radar.

Now, a couple of disclaimers.

There are films that haven't made the cut here simply because we don't know a fat lot about them yet, or at least not enough to get us fired up. Jack The Giant Killer, Rise Of The Guardians, Red Tails, Chronicle and Dark Shadows all fit into that category.

Plus there are the films that we suspect will turn out strongly, but what we've seen of them so far hasn't blown us away (Brave, Skyfall). Then there are the potential hidden gems (ParaNorman) we'll...

Confused Views: is Back In Action the greatest movie ever made?
It stars international movie icons Billy Blanks and Rowdy Roddy Piper, so how bad can Back In Action be? Matt finds out...

“An action film starring Rowdy Roddy Piper as a cop, teaming up with a martial arts expert vigilante to take on the mob is obviously going to be the best film ever.”

That was the thought process that led to me ordering the DVD of Back In Action. If we consider my take on logic to be Tokyo, Back In Action is Godzilla, because it destroyed it, leaving behind only fiery chaos.

I realised that I had flubbed immediately after turning the DVD on. The disc menu offers three choices: Play Film, Scene Selection and Play Trailer. Play Trailer is a bluff. Having now seen the film I would say that’s understandable – how do you distil the essence of Back In Action into 90 seconds without showing explicit...

DVD Review: Born To Fight
Born To Fight

Stars: ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, Daniel Magder, Jaren Brandt Bartlett, Janet Kidder, Emma Grabinsky | Written by Evan Jacobs, Jack Nasser | Directed by Anne Wheeler

Former WWE superstar ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin is back with Born To Fight, aka Knockout, another direct to DVD movie for producer Jack Nasser, who both previously worked together on Damage, The Stranger and the awesome Hunt to Kill. Besides producing Nasser also co-writes, with Evan Jacobs (Doughboys), this Karate Kid-esque underdog story of a nerd who learns to box, get the girl and beat the high school bully.

So far so Karate KId right? Well yes and no. Born To Fight does follow the now typical beatdown, train, fight, win formula that was made famous by Mr. Miyagi and co. in the 80s, but it has a lot, and I mean a Lot, in common with the underrated 90′s action movie Showdown,...

Exit the Dragon, Enter the Transporter: Nationality, Eroticism and Homosexuality in the American Martial Arts Film.
So a few years back I did a Master’s course at University on Cult Film. The culmination of this was a 20,000 word dissertation. I decided that I would write it on American Martial Arts Films because, well, you know, I like American martial Arts films. Since then, it’s just been sitting here on my computer gathering cyber-dust, so I figured I’d put it out there for anyone who fancies reading an in-depth exploration of films that don’t usually get an in-depth exploration. So if you’re a bit bored and want to read me waffle on about Van Damme, Billy Blanks and Isaac Florentine – then you can download Possibly The Best Thesis You Will Ever Read below. Also, one marker gave it full marks, so it’s fucking good ok? Download It Here – Do It, You Know You Want To.

Forgotten Action Cinema: Tc 2000
When you stop to ponder how many times Billy Blanks gets his ass kicked over the course of T.J. Scott’s dorky science fiction actioner “Tc 2000″, you seriously start to question his status as an action hero. I’m not saying that he has to coast through the entire picture without getting a few scratches on his angular puss, but it would be nice to see him completely overwhelm his decidedly outclassed opponents without getting his posterior handed to him in the process. Of course, if you shortened the action sequences, you’d realize that there’s not much of a story to speak of, no intricate plotting supporting the picture’s countless corridor-centric set pieces. The film’s only saving grace — besides watching Bobbie Phillips obliterate her enemies while wearing a ridiculously cheesy albeit realistically futuristic S&M costume — is the presence of martial arts veteran Bolo Yeung,...

Michael Jackson's Mini-Me -- Tae Bo Royalty
The kid busting out the insane moves in Michael Jackson 's new music video " Hold My Hand " has rhythm in his blood -- because the boy is directly related to Billy Blanks -- the King of Tae Bo . 9-year-old Michael Isaac Blanks is Billy Blanks' nephew -- and the kid has been performing as an Mj wannabe for years. In fact, just last year Michael's Mj impersonation even caught the eye of " This Is It...

'The Fight: Lights Out' Review - A Moving Target
Fighting games have been around for ages, but it was really Capcom's "Street Fighter 2" that brought head-to-head, one-on-one brawling to the masses, and since then very little has actually changed in the genre outside of the advent of 3D. Great games have come and gone, but it's a style of game that doesn't thrive on innovation. However, with the advent of motion controllers, being able to virtually punch you friends in the face by actually swinging your fist seemed like an inevitability, and Sony Playstation's Move enabled game "The Fight: Lights Out" has brought that concept to fruition.

The Basics

In "The Fight" you create your own character that has to work his way up through the ranks of the streets through no-holds-barred, bare-knuckle street fighting. The Move controllers serve as your fists, as you try to land as many punches as possible on your opponents until they're face down in the gutter.

Billy Blanks -- Money Managers Jacked Me for $1 Mil
Legendary Tae Bo badass Billy Blanks claims his former financial managers ripped off more than a million bucks from his bank accounts ... and now he's suing them to get back the cash. Blanks filed the lawsuit today -- in L.A. County Superior Court -- against his ex-money handlers Rhenee Foster and Demetria Gutierrez . In the legal papers, he claims between 2007 and 2010 they made more than 70 unauthorized wire transfers and check withdrawals ... totaling $1,158,484.11. According to the suit,...

'Super Street Fighter 4' Character Guide - Dee Jay
Did you know Billy Blanks was the inspiration for the design of Dee Jay? It's true. In the coin-op days, during development of "Super Street Fighter 2," Capcom Japan decided it wanted a new character for the follow-up. Capcom West's James Goddard took the initiative and sent a copy "King of the King Boxers" alongside a rough sketch and a description list of what would become our favorite "Street Fighter" kickboxer, all based on Blanks' striking image. As you'll notice below, what Dee Jay does in battle, though, has nothing to with Blanks.

The Expendables - Trailer
Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis cameo is this new trailer joining a cast that includes: Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin ,Terry Crews, Mickey Rourke, Danny Trejo, Charisma Carpenter, Gary Daniels and the late Brittany Murphy.

Like most I'd like to have seen Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal in there, but all the same for 80's throwback action this looks fantastic.

If there's a part 2, I'd like to see Chow Youn-Fat, Billy Blanks, Olivier Gruner, Don 'The Dragon' Wilson and the one and only Bolo Yeung dragged out from wherever they are and handed an AK47.
