In terms of cinema, there's nothing more frustrating than jumping aboard a potential franchise, only to see studio heads pull the plug due to poor critical reception, underwhelming box office, or negative fan backlash. Surprisingly, this happens a lot, with an assortment of properties left dangling without a proper resolution to their storylines.
Typically, the fault lies with the producers, who too often put the cart before the horse and spend far too much time setting the stage for future sequels and spinoffs rather than focusing on laying a solid foundation for their property. And so, we're left with a bevy of incomplete films that vanish into the void -- often leaving a lot of unrealized potential on the table.
We've perused the cinematic landfill for examples of this unfortunate filmmaking staple and found 15 noteworthy cliffhangers that were never resolved. So grab some popcorn and take a look -- and don't worry,...

Marshall Bruce Mathers III, better known as Eminem, is the best-selling rapper in recording music history. In a career spanning nearly 30 years and counting, Eminem has been one of the most dominant forces in hip-hop and has also pursued some acting roles here and there. Most notably, he appeared as up-and-coming Detroit rapper Jimmy Smith Jr., Aka B-Rabbit, in Curtis Hanson's "8 Mile." The film was semi-autobiographical, based on Eminem's real-life experiences, and won him an Academy Award alongside co-songwriters Jeff Bass and Luis Resto. Although the film follows some derivative cinematic tropes, it is fondly remembered by Eminem fans as one of the highlights of his career, boasting success at the box office and on the Billboard charts.

When Ridley Scott’s Alien first hit theaters, it didn’t just deliver sci-fi horror, but quietly revolutionized an entire genre. Not only did Ellen Ripley, played by Sigourney Weaver, become an icon of female strength, but the movie also flipped traditional horror tropes.
The first time I watched Alien, I was surprised to see that women weren’t the only ones screaming and running in the movie; instead, men were being violated in the most grotesque ways. These themes also carried on decades later in Alien: Covenant, where Scott doubled down and also explored the idea of greed and ambition.

Before Alien, horror was only a parade of half-dressed women being hunted, chased, and killed in the name of realism. But Ridley Scott took this formula and said: What if we made men feel fear instead?...

A 21st Century science fiction movie ranked by some among the masterpieces of the genre - it boasts a 90% Rotten Tomatoes score - is getting a new streaming home next month. The term “masterpiece” can be applied to only a handful of sci-fi movies released in the first 25 years of the current century.
While it’s by no means definitive, the recent New York Times list of the century’s best movies provides an interesting snapshot of cinema opinion as of 2025, including a rundown of what are held by the poll's participants to be the best sci-fi movies made since 2000.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was crowned the best science fiction movie of the century so far by the Nyt poll, followed by the more succinctly titled Her, Arrival and Wall-e. Where Marvel’s Blade has faltered, its costumes found a second life in another period horror: Ryan Coogler’s vampire hit, Sinners.
One of 2025’s most acclaimed genre hits, Sinners was such a hit that even its own studio seemed taken by surprise. But in a fascinating glimpse behind the creative curtain, producer Sev Ohanian recently revealed that Ryan Coogler’s horror has a previously hidden connection to another toothsome production: Marvel’s Blade.
You may recall that Marvel has spent over five years trying to reboot the Blade franchise, with Oscar winner (and Jurassic World Rebirth star) Mahershala Ali in the titular vampire hunter role. One iteration of the troubled production, headed up by director Bassim Tariq, was a period piece set in the 1920s – this was likely around the year 2022 or 2023. That incarnation of the film got so close to filming that sets had been built and costumes...

In 2022, "Halo" fans finally got what they'd been itching to see for years when Paramount+ brought Master Chief's story to life – and they did not like the results. The biggest issue came when Pablo Schreiber as the legendary Spartan 117 did the unthinkable and removed his helmet for most of the series, seemingly trying what "The Mandalorian" had gotten away with after showing off Pedro Pascal's mug on the odd occasion. Even the show's star was unhappy with some of the creative choices that were made, which included Master Chief getting it on in the show's first season with a controversial sex scene.
Unfortunately, that and other decisions didn't hit the target correctly, and the show was canned after two seasons. But while some fans might've complained about the final short-lived project, it should've still been deemed an achievement given the numerous attempts to bring the "Halo" franchise to life before it.

How many times have you spotted a stunning car and dropped everything just to take it in? Be honest—whether it’s a vintage Mustang rumbling down the street or a souped-up Jdm beast screaming through the night, you’ve paused, stared, maybe even followed it for a block. What was once just a machine built to go from point A to point B has become something else entirely. It’s in our DNA now. It’s emotion. It’s an obsession.
For many of us, the automobile bug bit early. Watching Dom Toretto and his crew fly through the streets—turbochargers whining, engines roaring, tires screeching—turned our veins into fuel lines. Pops, bangs, and gear shifts? Goosebumps, every time.
And Hollywood noticed. Over the years, the big screen has given us some absolute gems—racing movies that do more than show off speed; they show heart, pressure, passion,...

Sigourney Weaver and twisted psychological thrillers go hand in hand. While it was the Alien franchise that catapulted her into that realm, another one of her psychological thrillers, which flew under the radar during its release, has quietly entered Netflix’s top charts this week. The movie in question is Copycat (1995), which starred Weaver in the role of Dr. Helen Hudson, an agoraphobic criminal psychologist.
Harry Connick Jr., who starred opposite Weaver, recalled being avoided by Weaver on set, which might have stemmed from their dynamic in the movie.

Actress Sigourney Weaver gained fame for her role in the Alien franchise, becoming a bankable commercial star in the 1990s. The decade was dominated by serial killer movies, especially after the critical acclaim of 1991’s The Silence of the Lambs, which led to a surge in similar films.
In 1995, Weaver starred in a psychological thriller that received praise and also performed well at the box office. However, it was inadvertently overshadowed by another serial killer movie starring Brad Pitt. Weaver’s movie is now available on Netflix and is worth watching, having become a relic of the 1990s serial killer movie boom.

Before there was a "Super Mario Bros. Movie," or "A Minecraft Movie," or an "Assassin's Creed" movie, there was "Halo: The Movie." Or at least, there was supposed to be. As the Xbox's premiere video game franchise and one of the 2000s' most revolutionary first-person shooters thanks to its evolved take on shooting combat, rich lore, and expressive world design, "Halo: Combat Evolved" was an immediate smash. The game featured tons of cinematic gameplay, with awe-inspiring vistas and a unique take on the classic "space marines versus aliens" genre, and it became an obvious candidate to bring to Hollywood.
At this point, video game adaptations were mostly a joke. They were seen as mostly low-budget schlock that barely resembled their source material. With "Halo," Microsoft hoped to change that, and their first step was to bring Alex Garland, who would later go on to direct projects such as 2014's "Ex Machina.

When director Neill Blomkamp followed up his acclaimed debut feature, District 9, with the cyberpunk dystopia Elysium in 2013, it was met with a resoundingly mediocre reception. It’s a movie that even Blomkamp has disavowed. “I fucked it up,” he said bluntly in a 2015 interview. But I think he’s too hard on himself: a decade on, Elysium might be worthy of reappraisal.
In 2154, Earth is an overpopulated, polluted dust bowl. The wealthy elite live on the luxurious space station Elysium, where they have access to advanced medical technology and other essentials denied to the surface population.

2025 really is a great year for "Predator" fans. Not only are we set to see another live-action instalment from Dan Trachtenberg with "Predator: Badlands" but the "Prey" director has casually dropped an animated film that's unquestionably one for the history books (co-directed by Joshua Wassung).
Throwing less of a curveball and more of a killer frisbee at the franchise, "Predator: Killer of Killers" tees up a compelling anthology to begin with, only for it to surprise us in its final act and reveal we've been watching one story that spans centuries. Breaking through the language barrier and anything else that the Yautja throw at them, our hunted heroes unite in a final battle that is as awesome as everything we've seen in the time-shifting tale so far, and sets the bar not just for the franchise that started all the way back in 1987, but another breed of space beasts that...

That’s what happens when too many cooks try to create a dish… they spoil the broth. That is exactly what happened with Sigourney Weaver’s unreleased film in the Alien franchise, and it wasn’t even her fault!
When three directors clashed heads and collided scripts, the end result was a film named Alien V, aka Alien: Awakening, with director Neill Blomkamp helming the project. However, due to some unforeseen circumstances (which were really unfair to a lot of people), his project was put on hold indefinitely and later… canceled.
Sigourney Weaver was almost about to return to the Alien franchise
Fans might remember the iconic actress from the 1979 film Alien, who was the sole survivor of the terrible ordeal involving the Xenomorph. Well, although several sequels had already been made after the ’79 film, the script for Alien V demanded a challenge.

No film can ever hold as much intrigue as the cancelled project, that fabled, elusive "what if?" built up in press events and promo images, only to fall apart and become part of cinema's historical refuse pile. And there is no genre more given to this phenomenon than science fiction. There are sci-fi movies that were discarded by studios decades ago that still manage to cling on to an undead sort of cultural relevance -- a fascination among fans that won't let them truly disappear.
Today, we're looking at some of the most overhyped, widely discussed, heavily promoted, but ultimately never-to-be sci-fi films. It's a collection that undeniably sparks imagination, making us wonder what might have been had studio money lined up in the right way, or rights moved into the proper hands a little sooner, or a big star volunteered to join up.
We'll never know exactly what these movies would have looked like,...

Several years ago, Hollywood took a stand against North Carolina’s controversial “bathroom bill” Hb 2 and its successor Hb 142 targeting transgender people by pulling production out of the state, including the high-profile decision by Netflix to move what became one of its biggest YA hits, Outer Banks, to South Carolina.

While the previous films featured John Connor versus Skynet in some shape or form, James Cameron's Terminator: Dark Fate attempted something new and went down a different road. But the audience was receptive to it, so what now? RoboCop is experiencing something similar. While the first film still remains the franchise’s high point, the 2014 reboot, starring Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy/RoboCop and an all-star cast, tried to reignite the interest. Unfortunately, it didn’t have the desired impact it wanted. In 2018, director Neill Blomkamp promised he was creating a spiritual sequel to Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 classic with RoboCop Returns—ignoring the events of the...

Matt Damon confirmed he was cast in 2013's Elysium after Eminem turned down the role. The film proved Damon could play the anti-hero after helming action thrillers like The Bourne trilogy and The Green Zone.
Neill Blomkamp's Elysium is streaming on Netflix starting Apr. 1. This gritty dystopian sci-fi starred Matt Damon as its brutish, reluctant hero, which was then a departure from his prior roles. Exploring difficult themes about social class and immigration, Elysium echoed the themes of District 9, Blomkamp's debut effort. Critics considered the latter the better film in terms of structure and execution, however, and Blomkamp has since expressed a desire to redo Elysium. It barely broke even at the box office, earning $286 million against its $115 million budget.
"I feel like, ultimately, the story is not the right story," Blomkomp told Uproxx in 2015. Elysium imagines a dark, far future, where the masses barely survive on Earth...

District 9 Proved It – Neill Blomkamp Is the Perfect Director to Revive the Terminator Franchise The Terminator franchise is in cinematic limbo at the moment. While the release of Terminator: Dark Fate managed to recapture the attention of some mainstream outlets, the truth is that the series hasn’t received the same level of widespread acclaim as other franchises that have also been rebooted recently, like the exceptional Prey. Perhaps one of the reasons why the Terminator series seems...

"The Electric State" has generated nothing but trouble for Netflix.
The streamer spent a whopping $320 million on the film –- which boasts the expensive but wasted talents of Chris Pratt, Millie Bobby Brown, Stanley Tucci, and the blockbuster titans Joe and Anthony Russo –- only for it to debut as an almost immediate viewership flop on Netflix. This was no doubt due to the poor reviews it received upon release (sharing little in common with its lauded source material), as even the platform's own subscribers had already seemingly passed on it in favor of a little-known natural disaster documentary.
But if tornadoes aren't your thing -– and you're not looking to get involved with an overlooked sci-fi series like "Tales from the Loop" –- we've found loads of films currently available to stream or rent online that offer more compelling stories, more impressive visuals, and more human performances than "The Electric State" has to offer.

Even almost 30 years after it bombed in theaters and especially because it became a cult classic shortly after, Starship Troopers remains one of the most beloved sci-fi and/or war films ever made. To no one's surprise, producers have been trying and failing to either reboot or remake it ever since. After years of being stuck in limbo, the new Starship Troopers finally gained some life when it was announced that District 9 writer/director Neill Blomkamp would helm the remake.
As of this writing, Blomkamp hasn't specified what he plans to do for the remake. All that is known is that it will most likely be a faithful adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's 1959 novel of the same name rather than a remake of Paul Verhoeven's 1997 film. Assuming this is the case, then the remake may be dead on arrival. Contrary to what contemporary fans demand of today's film adaptations,...

Reports suggest tongues are being removed from cheeks for a new version of Robert A Heinlein’s militaristic space opera. Is this due to Trump 2.0?
If there is a modern day equivalent in Hollywood to Dutch director Paul Verhoeven, he or she must be hiding in the nearest underground space bunker, desperately praying that irony makes a comeback. Verhoeven arrived at a time when transgressive “video nasties” were just fading into irrelevance, a period in which filmgoers were just as likely to head to the cinemas for schlocky thrills as they were for biting sci-fi allegory. With films such as 1987’s RoboCop, 1990’s Total Recall and 1997’s Starship Troopers, Verhoeven managed to combine a high-energy, hyper-kinetic thrust that has rarely been achieved since. He remains one of the most subversive and controversial film-makers of his generation – which is why it’s so depressing that Hollywood keeps churning out substandard remakes of his best work.

Legendary visual futurist Syd Mead’s paintings will be showcased in a major exhibition, “Future Pastime,” running from March 28 to May 21 at the former Mitchell-Innes & Nash gallery space in Chelsea.
Long before the metaverse, Mead was crafting immersive future worlds that have shaped our collective imagination and became a defining force in science fiction cinema, designing iconic worlds. “Starship Troopers” are back. And they’ve found the man to lead them into battle.
Neill Blomkamp has been hired by Columbia Pictures to write and direct a new version of the story, this time going back to the original story by Robert A. Heinlein, which was originally published as a two-part serial in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction before being collected and released as a novel in 1959.
The story follows Johnny Rico and his band of roughnecks, who go into battle against an army of intelligent insects but plot specifics are being kept under wraps. Blomkamp is writing the script and producing alongside Terri Tatchell.
“Starship Troopers” had been adapted once before, in 1997, by “RoboCop” director Paul Verhoeven and writer Edward Neumeier for TriStar Pictures and Touchstone Pictures. That version leaned into the political satire, full of fascistic imagery and jingoistic propagandizing. That hard R-rated film starred Casper Van Dien as Johnny Rico,...

A new take on Starship Troopers is happening at Sony, with District 9 and Elysium filmmaker Neill Blomkamp set to direct.
According to a new report, Neill Blomkamp has set up a new Starship Troopers project at Sony. The director of District 9, one of the greatest science fiction films of the 2000s, is reportedly writing and directing the film, which will of course follow in the footsteps of Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 movie of the same name. However, according to the report over at Deadline, the film isn’t a remake of Verhoeven’s film and will instead hew closer to Robert A Heinlein’s original 1959 novel.
While Verhoeven’s sci-fi action film didn’t set the box office alight on its release, its blend of enjoyable cheesiness, nail-biting action and satirical take on neo-conservatism and the military industrial complex eventually found an audience on the growing home format market.

In the winter of 1997, Dutch auteur Paul Verhoeven somehow managed to sneak Starship Troopers, an eye-popping satirisation of Robert A. Heinlein's eponymous 1959 man-vs-alien-bug book, through the studio system. Like much of Verhoeven's oeuvre, Starship Troopers — the third part of the Dutchman's 'sci-fi trilogy', also comprising Robocop and Total Recall— was widely misunderstood upon release (despite a healthy $121 million box office showing), only going on to be critically reappraised after garnering a cult following in the years that followed. Now, THR is reporting that 28 years after Verhoeven did his part, Chappie and District 9 director Neill Blomkamp is gearing up to do his with a brand new adaptation of Heinlein's hugely influential novel for Sony. Would you like to know more?
Genre aficionado Blomkamp will be directing this new take on the conflict between humanity and alien 'Arachnids'/'Bugs' from a self-penned script, and will produce the film alongside longtime collaborator and wife Terri Tatchell.

Rumors of a new Starship Troopers movie have been doing the rounds for a couple of years, and we finally have confirmation that a new take on the classic sci-fi actioner is moving forward at Sony/Colombia Pictures.
As first reported by Mttsh, District 9 filmmaker Neill Blomkamp is set to write and direct the project, and will also produce alongside Terri Tatchell, his partner and wife who co-wrote District 9 and 2015's Chappie with the director.
According to THR, this will not be a remake or reboot of Paul Verhoeven's 1997 movie, but a more direct adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein's controversial 1959 novel.
The book focused on the rise of military man Johnny Rico during an interstellar war between Earth's army and legions of giant insect-like aliens known as Bugs. In addition to sci-fi space battles, the story was concerned with highlighting life in a military society, introducing ideas...

Neill Blomkamp, the visionary director behind the critically acclaimed District 9, has faced both massive success and challenges in his career. Known for his distinctive style of science fiction, Blomkamp was ambitious to take on the Alien franchise after announcing plans for a direct sequel to the 1986 movie Alien. However, the production was abruptly halted in 2015.

Starship Troopers remains an iconic cult classic franchise, with the 1997 adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein’s novel paving the way for its success. After several live-action and anime movies, the franchise is all set to be rebooted with a new take on the source material in development.

According to a new report, director Neill Blomkamp has been tapped to helm the upcoming project. As a result, Starship Troopers is likely to be updated for a modern audience. However, Blomkamp’s involvement with the project means bad news for one sequel I have been eagerly waiting for since the past sixteen years, and here’s why.

After years of zero updates concerning a long-gestating remake of Paul Verhoeven‘s “Starship Troopers“ at Sony Pictures, there is finally a director getting involved!

Big news for sci-fi lovers! Sony’s Columbia Pictures is bringing back ‘Starship Troopers,’ and they’ve tapped Neill Blomkamp to write and direct it. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the guy who gave us ‘District 9,’ a movie that mixed aliens and real-world grit in a way that stuck with people. Now he’s diving into Robert A. Heinlein’s 1959 novel, and I’m already curious about what he’ll do with it.
This isn’t a redo of the 1997 ‘Starship Troopers’ film that Paul Verhoeven made. That one, with its over-the-top military vibes and bug battles, starred folks like Denise Richards, Casper Van Dien, and Neil Patrick Harris. It cost over $100 million to make but only pulled in $121 million at the box office. Still, it found a second life as a cult favorite. Blomkamp’s version, though, is skipping that satire and going...

District 9 director Neill Blomkamp is set to reimagine StarshipTroopers for a new adaptation that will strip the franchise back to the basic elements of the sci-fi novel. The tale was originally brought to screens in 1997 by Paul Verhoeven, exploring the conflict between a futuristic space-faring and highly-propagandized militaristic society and a race of insectoid aliens. A cult-classic thanks to its VFX, action and over-the-top satirical exploration of fascism and propaganda, Starship Troopers has grown in appreciation, influence, and relevance with time.
The Hollywood Reporterreports that Blomkamp has been recruited by Sony to helm a new adaptation of StarshipTroopers for the big screen. Blomkamp will write and direct the feature, as well as serve as a producer alongside wife and frequent collaborator Terri Tatchell following their works on District 9 and Chappie. Rather than remaking Verhoeven's 1997 film, the upcoming feature will base itself directly on the original 1959 novel written by Robert A. Heinlein.
